Not too shabby. Pretty easy joint to find, right off of Broadway in Eureka next to a Grocery Outlet. There's a covered area out back where they do most of the actual barbecuing. Parking is limited in their lot but there is a decent amount of street parking available. They have several different kinds of meats including beef ribs, pork ribs, sliced pork, pulled pork, tri tip, and chicken. Additionally they have pastrami and hot links. Along with that are a limited amount of sides such as chili, macaroni, potato salad and coleslaw. They also have a typical variety of bottled drinks and fountain drinks. There is ample seating. You order at the counter (you can choose doneness depending on the meat), grab your drinks/chips and find a table to wait for your order to be brought out. I recently got a large tri tip sandwich and a bag of chips. The bill came to about $14. The sandwich came out within about 5 minutes of placing my order. It was a decent size and hot. I was asked how I would like the meat and I requested medium. The sandwich was not dressed aside from being sprinkled with a dry seasoning mix. The condiments including house bbq sauce were all available at a bar near the counter. The bbq sauce is tangy and sweet. So-so in my opinion. I suspect a tomato base with vinegar and brown sugar. The meat was tender, though I felt like I should have gone medium rare for a bit more juiciness. It was filling but didn't quite do it for me in terms of flavor. For $14 it was a wee bit pricey but I do think that there is plenty more on the menu that's worth exploring. 3 stars for the time being. I may upgrade them if I come across something really good. read more

BBQ generally must involve either fire or smoke. These ribs have not been exposed to either. If they have been bbq'ed, they sure taste and look parboiled. Sprinkled with a nasty, salty rub, and then grilled/steamed on a hamburger grill to re-heat. The pork ribs are not even a good cut. Fatty, not well marbled stock at all. Sauce tastes like a combination of Bullseye & Sweet Baby Ray's. I normally don't use sauce at all, but was trying to salvage the meal. Chili (as a side selection) is terrible, mostly tomato sauce based, no masa thickener, no "body", unappetizing smell, and flavor. Sorry, pricey, and not much to like here. Their Dank Burger (Tri tip on a burger patty) is a hit with friends visiting from out of the area when I'm trying to show them some unique local dishes. Five star sandwiches! We got a large chicken sandwich and a large tri tip sandwich along with coleslaw and sauces on the side. The meat was generously packed. And it was sooooo delicious, juicy and tender. Large is big enough to eat half and dave the rest for later. The sauce is just the right amount of sweet and savory. Sadly I wish I could do no rating with this review. I ate here for the second time in a long time just to give another try and actually got really bad food poisoning from their pulled pork sandwich. While I was in the ER the main nurse helping me said that she's also gotten sick from eating here after eating the chicken. I'm a Southern California native, but have spent almost the last decade traveling through The South, Texas, KC, etc, basically the world's best BBQ spots. I'm a good barometer. I've been to all the famous ones and many hole-in-the-walls the Travel Channel doesn't even know exists. After a day catching salmon off the coast of Eureka my guide, Gary Blasi or Full Throttle Sport Fishing and another guide, Mick Thomas of Lunker Fish Trips, who's been guiding the rivers in the area for 35 years told me we had to go to Porters. While they said the old location was much better, this one was still the pinnacle of BBQ on the North Coast. I had reservations. BBQ in Redwood Country? I wasn't convinced I'd leave smiling. Meanwhile, Porter Street BBQ would be able to make it in the South or the lower Midwest. It wouldn't be the best, but it sure would hold its own. The folks at Porter know how to BBQ. They passed my test. In fact, this is a good ole BBQ spot here. The place looks like it could be condemned in some cities and nothing is fancy. That's real BBQ, but they don't have sweet tea. Like any good BBQ joint, the menu is small. Fortunately, what they cook (at least what we tried) they did well, namely the tri tip and pork. The chicken was ok, not amazing. And, do try the soup. My girlfriend and I wanted to go here and hadn't had the time with classes and work always taking up time. We finally went and had THE BEST TRI TIP SANDO OF MY LIFE! This was a great place and wonderfully priced. The workers were helpful and Calissa (I believe was her name) was very polite and kind as it was our first time back in a long time. My girlfriend and I left and we also left her purse! Calissa found me on Facebook and got ahold of me and we got the purse back and when we tried to slide her a $20 she denied it and was smiling as we drove off. I wanted to like this place because of the reviews and the type of BBQ, etc but unfortunately I left with a resounding feeling of just "ok." Since everyone raved about the tri-tip sandwiches in the reviews, I gave it a whirl. The service was quick and the girl at the counter was friendly, it the rest of the crew seemed like they had other places they'd rather be. I read the interior was a shambles which was not the case. It's dated, but it's clean. No complaints there. Can't judge a place on its age. You can however judge it on its food and that's where it fell short. The tri-tip sandwich was piping hot and wrapped in foil, unfortunately once I unwrapped it to put onions and sauce on it, it fell apart to pieces and I could not reassemble it. So I wound up eating with my fingers and fork and knife. Alas... just because it's messy doesn't mean it's not good. The part that disappointed me was the roll was flattened and grease soaked, and the meat was extremely dry and flavorless. For a place that has a big smoker and grill out back, none of those flavors came through, and even the BBQ sauce was good but nothing to rave about. The meat was akin to when I make a tri tip at home and then try to heat the meat up again in some steam or water. It has that reheated flavor about it where the steam/water starves it of spices and smoke. I hate to think the meat was reheated so simply but I'm afraid that's what happened. It want fresh of kept wrapped like most BBQ spots to lock in the flavor. The chili was decent. I'd give it a 7 out of 10. A little on the tomato side for my taste but well thought out. I'll try the place again but I'm going to try something other than the TriTip and stick to smoking our own TriTip at home. read more

I've always seen the grill out back and thought about stopping in. I decided to try the pulled pork because I feel like pulled pork is a dish that proves if you have skills or not. I was unimpressed. It wasn't BAD but it wasn't good. It was drenched in bbq sauce. Like way too much. Some is fine, but it felt like there was more bbq sauce than pork. If it was amazing bbq sauce, it would get a pass but the bbq sauce was just so so. I'd rather have sweet baby rays. The problem too is that I spent $15 for a pound of pulled pork. What I got was 2/3 of a pound of cheap bbq sauce and 1/3 a pound of pork. Update: the coleslaw is sweet and crispy so that alone is 2 stars read more

You are greeted with a smile and served up fast, the tri tip is sliced so thin you can read through it, and the sauce is rich and not to sweet. There used to be a Porter Street BBQ in Cotati, CA that I loved going to, best ribs ever. But sadly it closed. So when I come up this way I like to stop by to get my rib fix. This place has slipped badly. Before they used to marinate them in who knows what but they were so good without their awesome sauce that most of the time I'd just eat them plain. When I got them this time they just plain sucked. They were overly spiced with some seasoned salt concoction and lukewarm to cold in spots. And the meat seemed second class this time around. A huge disappointment and won't be going back. Bummer. read more
