The restaurant and bar has a pretty typical appearance, but is generally pretty clean. We went about 1pm on Saturday and they were pretty busy but there was no wait for the table. The server was patient and friendly. They came by often and the food was delivered very quickly. We got the garlic burger and garlic fries. Seriously this $25 monstrosity is good enough for two people. The garlic everything was fresh and well cooked. I've been here over fifteen times now and overall it's good. I've noticed over two years there are some of the same people there and new ones I've never seen when I go back. They obviously focus on customer service and take it seriously. Most of the food is good, but I've ordered the same thing a couple times and it varies. I think the cooks have had a turnover too. Overall, the food is good and if something is wrong they'll replace it for you. There's not many "good" restaurants in Gilroy and not enough variety at all. I think Pop's is narrowing down any negative things and continuing to improve. The owners are there a lot to make sure things run smoothly. read more

I am rewarding this place with a 4 star review because I need a reason to come back to give them their rightful 5 stars..lol! We decided to stop here on our way to Los Banos. On a wet Friday evening we knew what awaited us on 152. There was an hour wait so I was glad that I called in the reservation on our way there. It is nestled in a large shopping center so there is plenty of parking. A bit a ways away from the freeway but pretty worth it. It is not too far from Gilroy Gardens so if you want to grab dinner on the way out this would be a great stop. We were greeted with a smile and sat right away with our menu's. I however, knew what I wanted. I ordered their fish and chips which came with either a soup or a salad. There were a few soup options but I HAD to order the clam chowder. My husband ordered their Pop's Pub Burger which came with a side salad and his choice of fries or onion rings. He opted for the onion rings. We knew better than to order apps. Pop's serves TWO 1/3 patties on their burgers and with a heavy soup like clam chowder on top of the fries and fish I ordered, we knew it would warrant then wheeling us out on a stretcher if we tried an app. Clam chowder was delicious. Hot, creamy and it had large pieces of clams in it. It wasn't overpowered by potatoes and had a pretty good potato to clam ratio...lol! My husband's burger was huge and he said it was a really good burger. His onions rings were crisp and paired perfectly. My order came with 2 large pieces of fish fried crisp and inside the fish was white and flaky. My fries were seasoned and fried crispy. I think tartar sauce was made in-house and it too was yum. We initially thought we'd come to the wrong place as the location is in a busy "strip mall", but inside it had all the ambiance we needed. Food was all excellent and we had some of the seasonal specials. But I'd describe the menu as pretty vast. The place was fun, decorated, and friendly. There are a few video games and a pool table at the far end of a very long open bar, but at lunch time the vibe was all very family-friendly. There is outside seating, near the parking, and a very large indoor seating area. The staff is well-organized and we very pleasantly surprised. Thought it was good value for the cost, as well. And we thoroughly enjoyed the music they had playing. Recommend reservations for busy times, but the process was very easy to do so online. read more

Went again with my family. I'll say 3 stars is safe. The potato soup was different tonight and imo not as good. There was no bacon tonight. Last visit I got the steak tacos and they were bomb! This time I got the chickens and they are not as good. Huge chunks of dry chicken breast. It was eatable but it was not great. My husband got the whiskey huger. One odd thing is he didn't ask what temp he wanted the burger so it came out well done. It's huge. You definitely need to smoosh it down to fit it in your mouth. The flavor was very good! They whisky sauce is on point but I'd clean up the burger. (No American cheese, ask what temp, not so much onions) We'll give it a third try. I hope it's as good as the first time. read more

The only problem I have with Pops Public House is that there is only 1. I recently visited after a hiatus of a few months. To my surprise the spirt of Christmas had visited Pops. From floor to ceiling and wall to wall Christmas ornaments of every kind adorned seeming every square foot of space. It was simply magnificent. There was even a place where Santa could sit in front of a massive Christmas tree and a mailbox to mail letters to him. I was impressed. I was not hungry for anything in particular that night. Good conversations with friends was all the nourishment I needed. But I did order the wings. I cant quite remember the flavor I chose, but I think it called sweet chili, but I could be wrong. But it would be wrong if you'd ordered them. Once again, a simple dish made attentively had all the hallmarks of an executive chef executing their craft. Simply wonderful. I was afforded the opportunity try Pops beef stew. This may not be the name but I am sure it would not be hard to find on the menu. It was had ingredients that you could identify. This is far cry from the fast food restaurants that claim they are serving soup or stew and all you are served in a color coded concoction of a viscos product masquerading as soup. Pops beef stew had large tender chunks of beef, potatoes, carrots, and celery. Food like this reminded me of my child hood in winter time of Texas. It almost seemed that my grandmother was the person who prepared it. The only thing that would have mad it better would have been Pops corn bread. By this time I was stuffed to my gills. Once again, Pops Public House provided a truly unique dinning experience. The festive buzz and being around people you enjoy makes this restaurant feels like family. read more

Great place to have a get together with family and friends. We came on a Tuesday where they have taco Tuesdays and they serve 2 tacos with choice of beef, calamari, and fish I believe served with beer. It was excellent! Service was great and quick. They have large tv screens to watch the game and a game area as well. They have a full bar and great selection of foods. We tried their Margarita Flight which was super good. We tried also their steak and also their salmon and shrimp. Their shrimp was super good. Had a good kick but not spicy. Excellent service and great menu choices however... Calamari appetizer looked BEAUTIFUL BUT...biting into them was like eating rubber bands! INEDIBLE!! Not only were the pieces too big but you couldn't cut them because all of the breading would crumble right off. I almost choked to death eating one Maybe the restaurant can look into marinades for tenderizing these?? Chicken sandwich was a sad bomb when I discovered that the chicken breast was cut the wrong way. When cutting any piece of meat, cutting it AGAINST the grain makes for a tender bite. Every bite I took was exactly opposite so tough! Also the breast was cut so thin as if they were trying to "save a buck" by cutting the portion. So disappointing!!! A more experienced cook would help solve a lot of these issues PLEASE!! Not sure what happened to this place but when it first opened, everything was spectacular! 2 stars After leaving an event in San Martin on a very warm Saturday late morning decided to check out the business that replaced the Irish pub (Claddagh) in Gilroy. This business is in a strip mall with a few restaurants and businesses. Lots of parking, which is a plus. I wanted to experience the fish and chips. And to summit up, it was no Bueno. In a nutshell the outer coating and seasoning was very bland, fish coating was well fried but it was dry, old and the fish amount or quantity was minimal. It reminded me of frozen fish sticks but bigger than grocery store fish planks or portions. Perhaps I received a bad batch. but i immediately tasted while in the car as it was a take out order and I wanted .to get a true opinion. The "chips" aka fries were above average and Fried well. If you like Fish n Chips, I'd say Don't come here. Sorry Pop ! I really wanted to like it. 2 stars are for the friendly order taker. read more

We came on opening day and the place was packed! We got seated 5 minutes after we arrived and it took about 25 minutes for someone to come take our drink and food order. No worries we could see how packed they were. Then our food arrived another 20 or so minutes later. My mac and cheese had a great flavor but was SO soupy where I realized I actually needed a spoon. It was very cheesy as well which I liked but its soupy consistency made it a mess to eat. I let our server know I was having trouble eating it and so I replaced my dish with the fish and chips. Those were actually great and I left pretty pleased with my meal. My fiance ordered the Pub burger and was a little disappointed at the semi-simple plain looking burger but was very happy after his first bite. Great patty and fresh ingredients. For two meals and two drinks the bill was $91 which we felt was a bit steep but we couldn't deny the food was good. Maybe just not quite worthy of that price. They have a great selection of cocktails that we will be back to try but will probably skip dinner. read more

On this sizzling summer day, my cousin and I were craving burgers, fries and a nice cold cocktail. I was blown away by both the food and the service. The CALI burger and the Gilroy garlic burger, was absolutely delicious--cooked to perfection, with juicy, flavorful meat and fresh, high-quality toppings. The bun was perfectly toasted, and everything was assembled beautifully. Sweet potatoes fries and onion rings were the right crispiness and flavorful along with a simple but yummy side salad. Ohhhh and we had a fineeee pineapple Paloma that was tasty!! The service was just as impressive, thank you Caden! From the moment we walked in, the staff was welcoming and attentive. They made sure we had everything we needed and checked in regularly to ensure we were enjoying our meal. It's rare to find a place where the food and service are both top-notch, but Pops delivers. This was our second time at Pop's Public House. Great service and food the first time (bf got the whiskey burger and a beer, I got the fish and chips and a Just Peachy cocktail). I got a cup of the potato soup and nearly fell out of my chair - best I've ever had. Yesterday, I ordered a bowl of the potato soup (didn't realize how big it would be with two bread slices!) and then my bf got the Cal Fusion burger - yes they are huge here! - and I also got the chicken parmesan after a nice discussion with Taylor, our server. EVERYTHING was amazing - even my Flavor Burst drink was to die for. All the servers and staff were great. I think Taylor may be my favorite server of all time - and I'm 51, so that's sayin' sumthin. I would have loved different or wiped down decor items on the wall along the entrance where we sat. It's not bad but could be zhuh'd up. Not even really a critique. The waitress was super sweet and she said her ears are ringing because they always have loud dj where you cant hear anything. My daughter got a alfredo pasta and said it was just ok, she ate about a thurs of it. The waitress said she can put in something but my daughter said no thanks. The atmosphere was fun, had pool, chess/checkers, and a tabletop shuffle board. My son and I played chess while we waited. Our waitress was attentive and FAST. It was mildly busy and we got our food out fast. The kids corn dog was a good size, and our burgers were amazing! We stopped into Pop's yesterday with some friends after a baby shower. I was genuinely excited to check it out since I hadn't been there yet. I'd heard about it through friends, and back when my husband and I lived in Gilroy, it used to be the Claddagh. When I visit town, I like to stop into local spots and catch up with friends, and I thought this would be a great place for that. Unfortunately, it was anything but. As soon as we sat down, my local friends mentioned how much the food quality has gone downhill since it opened, but we decided to give it a shot anyway. I asked our server, Carlos, how the wings were, and he told me they were great. When they arrived, they looked burnt--and sure enough, they tasted burnt. We ate one and left the rest. That was all I ate. Even though one group of friends left, another joined, and we were having fun playing pool. My son was happily playing with other kids, and for a moment, it felt like a good vibe. But then more food came out--and my friends didn't even touch theirs because it was so bad. Service was inattentive at best--we had to keep flagging Carlos down because he was rarely around. When the bill came, it was over $300 for just two adults and a child. I've paid far less at actual fine dining restaurants for better food and service. Yes, we had a few drinks, but the pricing still felt outrageous. One of my friends who had only been there for under an hour had a bill over $100, and another couple who were there before we arrived had a tab over $200. After we paid our bill, we asked for one more round. We waited 30 minutes, then went to the bar to check in. The bartender told us it was almost last call, and when we explained we had ordered another round half an hour ago with our server, she told us that "he thought you'd had enough." I was completely shocked. In my 40 years, I've never been cut off anywhere. None of us were drunk, loud, rude, or out of control in any way. My husband had stopped drinking well before that. We were calm and composed, just trying to enjoy the evening. Needless to say, my friends and I will not be returning to Pop's. Between the burnt and inedible food, overpriced menu, inattentive service, and bizarre treatment from the staff, the whole experience was beyond disappointing. Gilroy has plenty of better options--this isn't one of them. read more
