My husband and I drive 1 hour and 15 minutes from Patterson, about twice a year, to come eat at The Running Rooster. IT NEVER DISAPPOINTS!!! Today, our server was Amy, she was very sweet and very informative on menu choices. Amy recommended the steak ceasar salad flatbread, as I was torn by this and the Rocky Balboa pizza, which is my go to order. I decided to try something different. Our food and drink was PROMPTLY served by Ms. Amy!!! When I say our food looked AMAZING...oh my goodness!!! I was so ready to dig in, I forgot to take a picture. I did include a picture of our cocktail, which was a FANTASTIC apricot jalapeño margarita!!! Enough of my ramble!! It has been a few months since we have dined at Running Rooster. It looks like they have made a few changes (improvements) on the menu since we have been there last. The food was great I recommend the jalapeno margarita. We have always had the same couple girls wait on us that were good, however there was a new person there or at least new to us (Adrian) that was very attentive on a busy evening. If you're in downtown Hollister, highly recommend the Running Rooster; - We ordered a Blue Zone Salad, Rotisserie Chicken, Sourdough Club and Kids Grilled Cheese ---- No complaints here, the food was tasty. For something more filling, recommend the rotisserie chicken. The salad is lighter, but still satisfying. Club sandwich is huge and worth the value - For Drinks, we ordered a Vanilla Cream Soda& Hibiscus Mocktail ----- Drinks were slightly expensive but that's to be expected; recommended the cream soda Food was affordable and large in portion size, Drinks were slightly on expensive side. The queso reminds me of when I was a kid and you mix a can of chili with cream cheese. The chips are not house made... cheap and tasteless. I ordered shrimp n grits and while I as a southern girl enjoyed finding them in California, they are more watery than I would like. They need a bit more creaminess and cheese. The shrimp were decent, a bit over cooked and it overall needed more seasoning. My husband enjoyed his burger, nothing special but good. The cream soda was not sweet at all. Yesterday, my husband and I ate here for probably the fifth time since we moved to Hollister and it was a nice experience. When I eat out regardless if it is upscale or casual the service is what will keep me coming back. Jasmine was our server and she was wonderful. What Jasmine didn't know is yesterday was nine years since I laid my father down to rest and I was trying to keep it together all day, because no matter the time that has passed it is still a very emotional day for me. Therefore, getting out of the house to distract myself a bit was a must. Thankfully, everything was great, food, drinks, service, etc. For a moment while at dinner I forgot about the sadness and was enjoying my meal and engaging in a brief conversation with our wonderful server that made me smile. To start, service was friendly and helpful. Mom and I started with the guac and chips, which was actually our favorite part of the entire meal. The guac was very well done- perfectly seasoned! (This would actually be my top recommendation.) Mom's margarita had a flavor she could only think to describe as "gasoline-ish"... but not in an alcohol type way... just something off with the flavor. She really enjoyed her Baja fish tacos though. I had the Thai Peanut Salad and the quinoa felt really misplaced. I'm not quite sure why that was included, as it wasn't listed on the menu and would have not been what I went for had it been. The sesame seeds(?) also felt like, aside from texture, they didn't add to the dish in a beneficial way. It isn't something I'd order again. Was able to sit right away and received great service from our bartender who was busy but she ensured to us that we would be taken care of shortly. I've stopped by for pizza months ago in the evening and the restaurant was busy and lively. On my recent visit, it was after lunch hours and a little more quiet so if you want to avoid crowds, then lunch seems to be the best time to go. My order: -KEKONA BURGER: Hawaiian inspired burger with Kalua pork and pineapple chunks was sweet and tasty. If you're looking for a uniquely flavored burger then this is the one. The pork, pineapple, and bbq sauce combo was a nice change from the usual burger options. I opted for the Outlaw fries, which is their seasoned fries topped with a generous dusting of seasoning. $23 -COWBOY BURGER: Included cheese, 2 large battered onion rings, and thick cut bacon as well as all the toppings (pickle, tomato, lettuce). Not particularly memorable since it was just a regular burger if it didn't include the "Yeehaw" sauce. Paid an additional $1 for garlic fries, which I was satisfied with since the garlic was semi-cooked (so it wasn't raw and spicy) and very fragrant. $21 + $1 I think the price is a little steep for a burger and fries, but I will say the patties were THICK!! I wasn't asked about my preference for the patty, but they turned out perfectly with just a bit of pink. My tiny gripe is that the parts where the bun was grilled was definitely on the burnt side. I think the place might have gone down hill. Today we visited after not being here for close to three years and all things seem to be mediocre. We called to see if we needed a reservation for our big family and the lady took our name and party size just in case. We arrived and the weren't ready for us, asking us to wait outside for 5 minutes. After getting our menus ready the woman in the front walked us to our seat which was on the bar side of the restaurant. They sat us at a table that would best be sat for 4 people comfortably, but the 5 of us (two hire chairs) squeezed in and made it work. The water took our drinker order and we asked to order our food as well. We ordered Pepperoni (kids), burger and fries (kids), two chicken strips and fries (kids), roasted beet salad with salmon and a Cowboy burger. We then asked if we could order the appetizer which consisted of chips and dip (queso and guac) and bang bag BBQ boneless chicken wings. The first thing to come out were the drinks, the the chicken wings. This restaurant is one of the nicer places in Hollister, several sections with tables and booths. There is also outdoor seating. We had a 10 minute wait to get a table on a Saturday night, not bad. Our server took our drink order and our drinks were served quickly. The menu had a lot of options, and there was also a "specials" menu how ever they did not include prices. We ordered and sat there waiting almost a half hour for our food to arrive. My wife ordered the seared scallops ($35) with wild mushrooms and butternut purée. She said it was good but a bit salty. Hubby and I are here in town for a 4wd Safety Clinic at the local off road park. A group of us decided to have dinner at this restaurant. I ordered the Roasted Beet Salad. There were "Add Ons" like grilled or fried chicken, Salmon, Shrimp, etc. Additional charge if course. I chose the Shrimp. Here's where it all went wrong. (Sad Face). The salad arrives with what looked like either extremely overcooked crustaceans or extra spicy and blackened. Well these suckered were like biting into a ghost pepper! I immediately removed them, after choking on the first bite, and summoned our waiter. BTW...Nowhere on the add on list did it mention the shrimp was spicy? He was very apologetic and asked if I'd like non spicy rebook. Yes please.. A few minutes later he returns to i form me ALL the shrimp they serve is preseason? Hmmmm? So disappointing. The salad alone was just ok too. Never saw or tasted the feta cheese and the shaved Fennel had no flavor? On the upside...the RR interior is really cute, clean and quite large. Service a bit slow, but no biggy. They did take off the Shrimp Charge plus another $5.00. Last but not least and To Whom It May Concern: The ladies room has 3 stalls. 2 regular and 1 handicapped accessible. There was NO seat on the handicapped toilet!? We started with the Barnyard Fries, the soup of the day (clam chowder), and a couple of drinks--the San Benito Sunset and the Fashionable Rooster. Both appetizers were delicious and definitely something we'd order again. The drinks had a great balance of flavor and just the right kick. For our entrées, we went with the short ribs and the rotisserie chicken. The short ribs were tender and well-seasoned. However, the rotisserie chicken was a letdown--it was overly salty, to the point that even my wife and kids (who tried the leftovers) agreed it was too much. For being a restaurant owner you shouldn't attack your customers and be more mature in how you represent your company and look to resolve the issues. Maybe that is why you have a Yelp average of 3.6 stars, it says something about you and your restaurant as I'm not the only one who feels that way. ------ Was our first time eating here and our last, as we both got sick from the dinner we ate last night. We both order two burgers with fries, onion rings and it tasted awful that we couldn't finish it. The burger had no flavor and was dry, the outlaw fries were extremely salty, and the onion rings tasted very plain. After our meal we went straight home and immediately we both had diarrhea from eating there. We felt discomfort all night until the following day. My third time here - I'm not in Hollister often but I seem to always end up here as it's consistently good. Seems great for families, tourists - very welcoming. However, a few items we ordered were very over cooked, the ribs starter was very dry, my son's fries were basically burnt and a basket of sweet potato fries were as hard as chips .
