I have been wanting to dine in at this Gilroy local favorite establishment for a while now. We finally had the opportunity for a date night so we decided to try them out. We arrived on a Saturday early evening for dinner recently. Old City Hall Restaurant is located in a nice area in beautiful downtown Gilroy. Parking is accessible along the streets. The restaurant use to serve as Gilroy's old courthouse and jail. It has been transformed into a majestic and historic restaurant building. The decor is modern and traditional. Plenty of tables are available for dine in downstairs. There is a full bar with plenty of bar stools. The lovely patio looks inviting and spacious. Unfortunately I was not able to see the upstairs dining area. We ordered a Chicken Cordon Bleu with a Caesar salad and baked potato, Scallops and Prawns with a house salad and coleslaw, crème brûlée, and a couple of happy hour drinks of local IPA and house Chardonnay. Everything was delicious. My Chicken Cordon Bleu was flavorful and the combination of the cream sauce, cheese, ham, and chicken all went well together. The wifey said her Scallops and Prawns was scrumptious and the tropical salsa was a delightful complement. Her only gripe was that the portions did not match the price point of the dish. The crème brûlée was delectable and the perfect dessert to complement a wonderful 3 course meal. Overall we enjoyed our experience at Old City Hall Restaurant. The staff were friendly and accommodating. The vibe was bustling and inviting. Daily happy hour is always a nice touch. We will come back to try other dishes especially the burgers. read more

Have driven by several times and never stopped. Recently we decided to give it a go. Not disappointed. And have been several times in the past few weeks!! Love that I don't have to go to WI for some delicious cheese curds!!! Addicting delicious. Food is wonderful. The staff are friendly and check in regularly. They have specials throughout the week. Fire pit outside. (i love), Karaoke, and such a special venue. (Old City Hall) Fun times. Mike P stood out for exceptional service!!! Attentive, positive, friendly and treated us like special guests. The restaurant is rich in history with all of the photos from the old city hall. The bathrooms are from the old jail. It's haunted back there for sure. The food was mediocre so I was hopeful it would be great. The server was a bit sassy and not overly friendly. We had also asked for fruit with breakfast and got hash browns instead. Which was fine. This is such a nice place for lunch or dinner with family. You can dress casually or dress up a bit, as the venue is pretty and historic vibes but most families were dressed for a casual meal. Made a reservation morning of for 4 people and had a table set aside in the evening when we arrived. There is also bar seating to watch the Sunday game. WISCONSIN CHEESE CURDS: melty gooey cheese was crispy on the outside CLAM CHOWDER: standard clam chowder. Didn't really have a wow factor but was a nice side to the entrees CLAM LINGUINI: generous amount of clams! Some of the clams had sand in them, but nothing we couldn't handle! Pasta had good coating of sauce SEARED AHI TUNA SALAD: holy guacamole, this was the star of the show. It was so big you could probably feed a family of 3-4 people with just this. The wasabi reduction was the perfect complement to the ginger and sear of the tuna. Hefty amount of toppings too The only thing is that my family was a bit clumsy and were surprised by the large portions so we felt a bit limited on table space. Our silverware kept falling off the table and clattering on the floor and we felt sooo bad. But the servers are so nice and attentive so they brought out replacements as soon as they heard the clanking. Street parking and we went during dinner time so had to park a bit far and walk. Took my wife and child here for dinner. It wasn't overly busy for a Friday night and we were seated right away. Wish I could comment on the food, but after waiting 30 minutes to get water, not a single server came around to take our order, not even for drinks. We even asked the young gentleman who brought us water if he could please flag someone down, but after another 10 min of radio silence, we threw in the towel and left. Ironically, They were quick to clear our table as we got up, and thanked us for coming in. One of the more disappointing dining attempts we've had. read more

Stopped in for lunch with family ahead of the La Ofrenda Festival, we were seated and consistently checked on while we waited for the rest of our party. * Service: Dale took our orders quickly (& saved me from ordering over-cooked meat, thank you, Dale!), got our drinks, got our orders out, & checked-in on us throughout the meal. * Location: Super-conveniently located to access the festival, very neat historical setting! * Food: Ordered the flat-iron steak salad and Manhattan, both terrific! Food is quite mid. If you're looking for garlic in the garlic town, harder to find? They do have a nice garlic spread dish here for appetizers but the rest of the food leaves something to be wanted. The shrimp dish was alright but the pasta was too salty. Service was okay. Just friendly enough? Ambiance is interesting. Even with other travelers or people eating there and at the bar, it still feels empty somehow. That said, nothing stood out too far to be *bad*. It's just, decent. read more

This place is absolutely trash. I'm stunned how this place is still running. The food is horrible, most of the staff barely have a personality. There are a few who are kind and attentive, but hopefully you don't get the busty short older Mexican lady who always has her hair braided. The bathrooms are far from decent. There is a reason why they have gift card deals sold at Costco and they get 3.5 stars on Yelp. Save your money and go somewhere where the food is good and you can enjoy a nice family meal. read more

They brought my steak the first time, but the beef was very bad. It was overcooked and extremely tough. I asked them to remake it, but the second steak was even worse than the first. This was my third visit, and every Christmas season my salon organizes a Christmas dinner at this restaurant. read more

Been here a handful of times before this review with different groups of people. I've constantly had a bad experience with the food, service, and attitude. It genuinely feels like the owner/barkeep person hates your guts unless you're an old white person that grew up with him in Gilroy. The waitstaff is understaffed and incredibly slow and inattentive. Numerous mistakes on orders (even requests about allergies. If you can't do it, just say "no" instead of potentially killing someone). The food is stale and horrendously bad. Old City Hall disappointed! We headed out around 5 pm tonight to go to Old City Hall for dinner. We enjoy the restaurant and they have the best garlic fries EVER! When we got there, no hostess working but a sign saying wait to be seated. There were several people/groups ahead of us. But no one to provide information as to what is going on. One waitress came by and said they were expecting a big a big party and it was a 20 minute wait. Ok we can do that. The family ahead of us decided to go outside so the kids could run off the steam. Meanwhile the line is getting longer and longer behind us, the lobby is filling up. The waitress approaches me and ask the number of our party and tells me that they only have outside seating. I ask her about the family ahead of me because I don't want to jump the line. She says nothing. No one is taking names or starting a list. I check outside too cold and wet. After all it has been raining for 4 days straight. When I go outside I notice the family ahead of me still not seated, but they were going to seat me ahead of them. I noticed while waiting for a table, that there was a table set for about 10 with reservations. But when I went to check the outside seating there was another table set and reserved for about 20. I get booking big parties every restaurant does. But either close the restaurant or manage it better. We left, and headed into MH for dinner instead. The management of this situation was very poor! Old City Hall has been one of my favorite restaurants to eat at, my grandma used to take me here frequently (she has since passed and is no longer with us) every time I come here, I think about my grandma and how much she loved eating here. We have been frequenting City Hall for lunch for quite sometime. We typically order a burger and add some jalapeños, and of course the onion rings. I paid $33.00 for a burger today. No drinks. Came in with my son on Sunday. (1/25/2026 for breakfast. Our host sat us down and brought us water. After waiting for about 15 minutes no waitress had stopped by to check up on us I asked a waitress if she could have anyone come take our order she rudely replied that she was only taking her tables orders. We waited a total of about 45 minutes and no one helped us, we left and went across to Garlic City Cafe where we had a delicious breakfast. I've been here a few times now. Honestly the food is rather mediocre. It's got that "chow hall" "cafeteria" type of feel. It's not terrible, but not great either. Old City Hall is a decent restaurant. My issue is consistency and varies. Customer service is not super great. But I'm more about the quality of the good, the Flat Iron Steak salad is good basic choice and their balsamic vinaigrette is actually tasty. The garlic bread that comes with it on the side would be great but it's always hard and lacks actual flavor. It's like eating bricks. The flat iron stack is basic and not much to it. Their calamari is really good and better than any other place in town. At the end of the day though I'm paying for quality and service whether it's takeout or dine-in and I'm always left with the feeling of this could've been better. Appetizers they offer like the jalapeño poppers are actually really great but potatoes skins are usually hard and the drizzle of sour cream is always dry and looks like it's cracking making it less appetizing. The clam chowder is a disappointment. The salmon dinner dish is really good and something I feel like is most consistent and worth getting. read more

We had our niece's bridal shower here last weekend and they did an awesome job for our event. We still have guests talking about how much they enjoyed the shower. They have private rooms, all the tables and chairs to accommodate your party size, along with linens and they have several food menus that will fit your function. Fran was organized and in constant contact with us to make sure our event was perfect. Her servers were professional, courteous and on top of every detail. You can tell they have many years and a great deal of experience with all the functions and events that are held here. I can not recommend Fran and her restaurant enough!!! read more

The only reason why I give them three stars is because their service is terrible . After living in Gilroy for 10 years, I went to try it for the first time mid June LOVED IT. Went again on a Saturday 8/16, and we were very disappointed. Food was good but service was nonexistent! Went around 3ish pm, there literally two tables, we were the second. Ordered and NOT once we got checked if we were ok, no refill NOTHING! I didn't want to tip for that same reason, but left a very small one because I felt bad! I don't think we will return! read more

I have not been to city hall in a long time and after last nights visit, I can see why. Me and my wife went to get a quick bite for dinner. Being Thursday, they had a half price pasta special. We both go spaghetti and meatballs.... To say that the food wasn't good is an understatement. The pasta was overcooked, the sauce absolutely tasteless and the meatballs raw and cold. The staff was great but the food was absolutely horrible. We ordered to go (before tasting) for a friend who is laid up. That meal was promptly thrown in the garbage....
