I have been wanting to dine in at this Gilroy local favorite establishment for a while now. We finally had the opportunity for a date night so we decided to try them out. We arrived on a Saturday early evening for dinner recently. Old City Hall Restaurant is located in a nice area in beautiful downtown Gilroy. Parking is accessible along the streets. The restaurant use to serve as Gilroy's old courthouse and jail. It has been transformed into a majestic and historic restaurant building. The decor is modern and traditional. Plenty of tables are available for dine in downstairs. There is a full bar with plenty of bar stools. The lovely patio looks inviting and spacious. Unfortunately I was not able to see the upstairs dining area. We ordered a Chicken Cordon Bleu with a Caesar salad and baked potato, Scallops and Prawns with a house salad and coleslaw, crème brûlée, and a couple of happy hour drinks of local IPA and house Chardonnay. Everything was delicious. My Chicken Cordon Bleu was flavorful and the combination of the cream sauce, cheese, ham, and chicken all went well together. The wifey said her Scallops and Prawns was scrumptious and the tropical salsa was a delightful complement. Her only gripe was that the portions did not match the price point of the dish. The crème brûlée was delectable and the perfect dessert to complement a wonderful 3 course meal. Overall we enjoyed our experience at Old City Hall Restaurant. Have driven by several times and never stopped. Recently we decided to give it a go. Not disappointed. And have been several times in the past few weeks!! This is such a nice place for lunch or dinner with family. You can dress casually or dress up a bit, as the venue is pretty and historic vibes but most families were dressed for a casual meal. Made a reservation morning of for 4 people and had a table set aside in the evening when we arrived. There is also bar seating to watch the Sunday game. WISCONSIN CHEESE CURDS: melty gooey cheese was crispy on the outside CLAM CHOWDER: standard clam chowder. Didn't really have a wow factor but was a nice side to the entrees CLAM LINGUINI: generous amount of clams! Some of the clams had sand in them, but nothing we couldn't handle! Pasta had good coating of sauce SEARED AHI TUNA SALAD: holy guacamole, this was the star of the show. It was so big you could probably feed a family of 3-4 people with just this. The wasabi reduction was the perfect complement to the ginger and sear of the tuna. Hefty amount of toppings too The only thing is that my family was a bit clumsy and were surprised by the large portions so we felt a bit limited on table space. Our silverware kept falling off the table and clattering on the floor and we felt sooo bad. But the servers are so nice and attentive so they brought out replacements as soon as they heard the clanking. Street parking and we went during dinner time so had to park a bit far and walk. Food is quite mid. If you're looking for garlic in the garlic town, harder to find? They do have a nice garlic spread dish here for appetizers but the rest of the food leaves something to be wanted. The shrimp dish was alright but the pasta was too salty. Service was okay. Just friendly enough? Ambiance is interesting. I had a gathering of about 100 people here. Fran at Old City Hall was a dream to work with. She had a selection of food for me to choose from and her pricing was very affordable. She was able to provide an open bar... to a limit, which I was able to manage by handing out drink tickets to everyone for free drinks. No ticket, you pay. So there was no surprise bar tab at the end, since I prepaid. They served the food buffet style. It was nice and hot and very good. I received several compliments on the quality of the food. I had the room for the entire day. I was unsure about my total headcount, so she suggested to call that morning if I needed to make a change. She was SO FLEXIBLE. The only thing I need to provide was deserts. The room was upstairs over the restaurant. There is an elevator if needed. It was a spacious room. She gave me options of tablecloth colors. They have what you need to have music playing in the background and the ability to play a slideshow if you want to. A microphone if you need to have someone speak. I checked out a few other places before landing here. This was perfect. I didn't have to arrange a caterer, or deal with getting chairs, plates, silverware or cleanup. Fran, you are the best. The food was mediocre so I was hopeful it would be great. The server was a bit sassy and not overly friendly. We had also asked for fruit with breakfast and got hash browns instead. Which was fine. I am disabled and need a regular chair not the low slung rattan chairs offered to outside patrons. For over a year. I've been accommodated by the wait staff with one chair from the inside dining area. No problem. Today the owner Bobby, rudely stepped outside and yelled that there were no more chairs from the inside allowed outdoors. As I was the only disabled person outside, sitting on a dining room chair. It appears that he was yelling at me. When I told him. I wouldn't be able to come to the restaurant during outdoor karaoke he spat out he didn't care and it wasn't his problem. Wish I could comment on the food, but after waiting 30 minutes to get water, not a single server came around to take our order, not even for drinks. It genuinely feels like the owner/barkeep person hates your guts unless you're an old white person that grew up with him in Gilroy. The waitstaff is understaffed and incredibly slow and inattentive. When we got there, no hostess working but a sign saying wait to be seated. There were several people/groups ahead of us. But no one to provide information as to what is going on. One waitress came by and said they were expecting a big a big party and it was a 20 minute wait. Ok we can do that. The family ahead of us decided to go outside so the kids could run off the steam. Meanwhile the line is getting longer and longer behind us, the lobby is filling up. The waitress approaches me and ask the number of our party and tells me that they only have outside seating. I ask her about the family ahead of me because I don't want to jump the line. She says nothing. No one is taking names or starting a list. I check outside too cold and wet. After all it has been raining for 4 days straight. When I go outside I notice the family ahead of me still not seated, but they were going to seat me ahead of them. I noticed while waiting for a table, that there was a table set for about 10 with reservations. But when I went to check the outside seating there was another table set and reserved for about 20. I get booking big parties every restaurant does. But either close the restaurant or manage it better. We left, and headed into MH for dinner instead. The management of this situation was very poor! I've given this a three star because the food is good however, the short loud heavy set waitress makes it not a good place to go. It's very hard to tolerate her bad manners and extremely loud voice. There are a few who are kind and attentive, but hopefully you don't get the busty short older Mexican lady who always has her hair braided. The bathrooms are far from decent. I've been here a few times now. Honestly the food is rather mediocre. It's got that "chow hall" "cafeteria" type of feel. It's not terrible, but not great either. But, because of that crazy Costco deal going on, I'll be back! You can buy $100 worth of gift cards for just $50. Limited time offer, but I still have lots of credit left. Service was excellent tho. Came in with my son on Sunday. (1/25/2026 for breakfast. Our host sat us down and brought us water. After waiting for about 15 minutes no waitress had stopped by to check up on us I asked a waitress if she could have anyone come take our order she rudely replied that she was only taking her tables orders. Old City Hall is a decent restaurant. My issue is consistency and varies. Customer service is not super great. But I'm more about the quality of the good, the Flat Iron Steak salad is good basic choice and their balsamic vinaigrette is actually tasty. The garlic bread that comes with it on the side would be great but it's always hard and lacks actual flavor. It's like eating bricks. The flat iron stack is basic and not much to it. Their calamari is really good and better than any other place in town. At the end of the day though I'm paying for quality and service whether it's takeout or dine-in and I'm always left with the feeling of this could've been better. Appetizers they offer like the jalapeño poppers are actually really great but potatoes skins are usually hard and the drizzle of sour cream is always dry and looks like it's cracking making it less appetizing. The clam chowder is a disappointment. The salmon dinner dish is really good and something I feel like is most consistent and worth getting. read more

Besides the delicious meals this restaurant serves on a daily, they also do an awesome job for an event you may want to have. We had our niece's bridal shower here last weekend and they did an awesome job for our event. We still have guests talking about how much they enjoyed the shower. They have private rooms, all the tables and chairs to accommodate your party size, along with linens and they have several food menus that will fit your function. Fran was organized and in constant contact with us to make sure our event was perfect. Her servers were professional, courteous and on top of every detail.
