We love this spot! Stopped in late night for wifeys B-day. It was almost midnight so we had to order quickly. Bar staff was really on point, and took care of us before the kitchen shut down. The skewer game at Poor Hendrix is where it's at! The shrimp and the mushroom skewers are excellent! We also had deviled eggs, okra & shishitos, french fries, cocktails, and of course dessert. $55 before tax was not too bad. To reiterate, service was great. So I've been to Poor Hendrix over a dozen times! I cannot believe that I waited to review it until now, but this place is consistently great. It's right by my house, so that's definitely a plus! The staff is great and the menu selections change pretty often. The cocktails are also great. It's definitely s good spot to have dinner or cocktails and bar snacks with friends. Appetiser: Fennel & black truffle salami. $6 Tasted the fennel not the truffle. Was way too salty for me. It's in a takeaway box for my dog to enjoy later. Entree: N.C. Trout, Butternut squash and crispy onions. $16 Trout was good, not overly salty but, had skin on it, not my thing. Butternut squash was great, but only a spoonful, really? Where's the squash?? Fried onions were lightly breaded and crispy. Dinner was good, but very small portions. I'm still hungry! So, I ordered dessert. Poor Hendrix is a great place in Decatur, which we discovered because of our friends. They have Bar area and restaurant area with slightly different menu for Bar Eats and Restaurant menu has Entrees. I love their tapas, grilled mushrooms are my favourite among all. But all their tapas are delicious and I would recommend trying them. Moroccan Lamb Skewers are amazingly delicious, carrots were amazing and dry rub shrimp skewers are amazing too. Moving to Entrees chickpea potato fritters are soo good, with fresh mint taste. Can I say amazing tapas and drinks. They have about 15 tapas on their menu and they were all delicious (I'm guessing) the ones I had were awesome (non-meat items) of course. The waiter we had was very attentive and cool. This place sits a neighborhood and is a refurbished building good way to use old structures. Not everything old isn't worth saving. The staff was knowledgeable on the items they serve. We had a blast here and our bill was and average of $40 per person. We ordered all 15 tapas and had like 3 drinks each. I will admit that I am biased writing this review. Poor Hendrix is my neighborhood bar/restaurant. I. LOVE. IT. SO. MUCH. Cool ambience. Good food. Great drinks. On a nice day, it's great sitting outside, sipping on a cocktail, chowing on my fave - the grilled cheese sandwich. Other should-be-mentioned food includes the cauliflower, the fries, crispy trout skin, and chicken liver pate. The bar and restaurant menus differ. Most days, I prefer munching on small plates from the bar menu. I try sometimes to take advantage of half-priced bottles of wine on Mondays in the restaurant. Parking sometimes can be challenging because there are three other restaurants that surround Poor Hendrix. If anyone asks me to go to Poor Hendrix, I always give them a resounding YES. read more

This place opened up close to my house, and it has become a regular spot for my husband and me. We usually sit either at the bar, or on the patio with our pup. First, order the salmon tartare. Do it. Don't ask questions. I am obsessed. Second, their cocktails are always amazing and affordable priced, as are their excellent beer and wine selections. Third, when the weather is nice, the patio is the best place to be in our neighborhood. I hesitate to add that because it fills up so quickly! But it's true, and you should know. They should call the chicken liver pate "Pillows of Offal Heaven on Toast." This appetizer is more of a mousse than a pate, a melt-in-your-mouth, light, airy deliciousness. Okay so the food and drinks here are amazing! The fall punch was delicious, I would go back just for that alone. I had three with dinner and honestly could have drank an entire punch bowl of it! I came here for date night and we shared the tapas, all of which were very good. I pass this place everyday on my way to work and back home. It's apart of the new development happening on 2nd Ave and Hosea Williams in Decatur. I went here last night for date night. There is parking in front of the restaurant but most is behind. So when you walk in from the parking lot you have to walk through the super nice patio and bar to the front in order to be seated (if you're wanting to sit in the dining area). This is a bit awkward and could be troublesome if the bar and patio areas are super packed. We were seated within 2mins of walking in. Our waiter was nice and was very casually dressed, we could have mistaken him for a patron. I tasted the New Realm Perimeter Pale Ale and didn't like it...it had too much hope for my liking. We ordered 3 small plates: Fresh ricotta, olives, lemon, herbs, & peanuts with grilled bread, Chili-rubbed mushroom skewers, and Dry-rubbed shrimp skewers with Alabama white sauce. The Fresh ricotta, olives, lemon, herbs, & peanuts with grilled bread was good but a little too lemony for me but we still enjoyed it. The Chili-rubbed mushroom skewers came with 2 skewers and they were really good but really spicy. If you don't like or can't handle spicy food don't get this. The Dry-rubbed shrimp skewers with Alabama white sauce also came with 2 skewers and was our favorite. They were really delicious and well seasoned. We only wish they came with at least 4 skewers because they were so good. We also ordered a side of fries and it came with housemade ranch sauce which was outstanding. These fries are some of the best fries I've ever had (and I'm a fry connoisseur lol) and the ranch sauce made it that much better!! The waiter was super attentive and our food came out relatively fast. They bar was packed but the dining area wasn't. It's a really neat setup and I'd definitely go back when it's warmer to hang out on the awesome patio with friends. The dress and atmosphere is casual and this is a cool little neighborhood hangout spot. We didn't try any entrees because we really just wanted appetizers but we'd go back to try them. They get a 4/5 because we only really really enjoyed 1/3 small plates that we got. The presentation was good...the food was literally just on the plate. The restaurant does a great job with covid compliance. I felt really comfortable and safe with their practices. The staff was super kind and helpful. The food was all packaged in sustainable packaging, nicely labeled and all in a big brown bag. Can eat on their outside patio or take to go. Everything was super easy and had minimal touch points for staff and guests. The food was super good and a nice departure from the heavy fried foods we'd been eating while visiting. Fresh and tasty. Went to Poor Hendrix bc another kitchen was closing too early for us to make it, so we decided to try one of the new spots near us... and I am very happy we did. The food was excellent (we had just about every starter plate and the steak entree) Our server Ray was very kind, knowledgeable and helpful. The prices are very fair, borderline "cheap" although that word doesn't belong in this review in any negative connotation. This place is quickly becoming my husband and I's favorite summer hangout! This place is nice, but not snooty, which elevated versions of classic dishes at great prices! Sit on the back patio if you can- I usually NEVER sit outside at restaurants because I feel like that you are often ignored by waitstaff, but they have a designated bar and hostess stand on the patio with servers whom the Patio is their only section! Our evening date for gluttons had its final stop here. We chose to order from the bar food menu. Crispy trout skin- Literally fried to crisps, this was a great texture dish to wake up your palate (even after having hot chicken and BBQ) to something different. Deep fried brussel sprouts in vinegarette and bacon- tasty, but definitely on the salty side Charcuterie plate- I was hoping for a variety of cuts, but there was just one salami-like cut of meat served with cornichon and some mustard- pedestrian. Lamb skewers- Whereas I expected cubes of lamb, this skewer was more of a kufta kabob- like ground lamb. While the flavor was, the middle seemed a bit too rare. Chicken liver pate toast- This was probably my favorite dish of the night. Generous portion of liver pate slathered over toast, complemented with a red wind gastrique. We had this towards the end of our meal, and even then, we were impressed. Looking forward to checking this place out again! My only minor gripe is that the bar table near the window was sticky...needs to be wiped and sprayed down with some cleaner. read more

The hubs and I did a progressive dinner at 3 places all at the same intersection (Mary Hoopa's, The Greater Good BBQ, and Poor Hendrix). And boy, was it a good date night. We ended our night with Poor Hendrix, and a beautiful ending it was. We sat on the bar side. There is a separate dinner side with more entree options. But since this was our last stop for dinner, we decided appetizer/snack type dishes was probably a better option. We ordered: Charcuterie Lamb skewers Shrimp skewers Fried Brussel sprouts Smoked and fried trout skin Chicken liver pate toasts Cream brulee Drink: PH spritz with grapefruit, aperol, bitters, soda Everything was super tasty, though also pretty salty. The highlights were the smoked and fried trout skin with Japanese seasoning and the chicken liver pate toasts with peanuts and red wine gastrique. The smoked fried trout skin was like delicious fish chips- that doesn't sound appetizing, but it was SO Good! I could've eaten a whole order by myself. The chicken liver pate toasts were also very tasty. It wasn't too liver-y. The red wine gastrique provided a good balance to the heaviness of pate. And the peanuts add a nice crunch. Yummers! I accidentally stumbled upon this place so I parked and immediately pulled it up on Yelp. The ratings and pics helped so I proceeded to the bar. As I waited a bit for the menu I continued reading the Yelp reviews and came across a picture of the menu so I kinda knew what I wanted to try once someone came to take my order. I got a dry-rubbed shrimp skewer with the Alabama cream sauce. I asked for this "white BBQ" sauce on the side because I didn't know what to expect. The shrimp was grilled to perfection with a flavorful succulent, mouth watering awesomeness to it. To top it off the sauce was outstanding. It was only $4. I told myself I'd eat 2 orders next time. Definitely order more than one order if sharing. I then ask s the server what kind of cheese was in the grilled cheese. The couple next to me immediately chimed in with their endorsement for this item. If I recall she said it was like a surprise celebration (?) in your mouth. And that... It was. Oh... inside it was muenster & cheddar while outside was coated with parmigiana. It's pan fried in a skillet before baking it so be patient with this item. It probably took 20 minutes to get it. $6. To finish it off I ordered the rice crispy treats to-go. Everyone at the bar was Raving about these. The gals to my right were like "don't leave without trying the rice crispy treat" and the guy to my left was like "you gotta try the rice crispy treat... they take it to a new level" so when I ordered one to go, the server said there are plenty of local people who will stop in just to pick some of these up and take with them to go. I wasn't as excited about these. Because they were salty, hence the description "salted brown butter rice crispy" for $4. read more

Poor Hendrix pulls off being both a trendy bar and a neighborhood family place at the same time, mainly due to the way it divides the bar & the restaurant up so well. Took the family on a rainy Tuesday night here early in the evening before many people had arrived. I'm happy to say we got a great level of service with our food. And what great food it was...the strength of the menu here is with the small-plate items - the skewers, Udon noodles, brussels, etc. These items were outstanding - kid friendly too if your kids are not the burger/pizza/chicken finger-only types. Entrees were great (Duck Bolognese and the Steak) but we really think the way to go is by ordering a lot of tapas. Cocktails were good (names were great too - I always appreciate that) as well as the beer menu. I hope Poor Hendrix is around for a long time - what a great addition to the area! read more

We live in the East Lake neighborhood and, as people in the service industry, are so happy to have a spot that we can relax on our days off! On said days off we tote around our pup as much as possible, and since they are named after one themselves, their patio accommodates perfectly for ours. They have a fantastic drink selection and the bar food fits perfectly with a little of this and a little of that picking that occurs when you work both in the front and back of house. I am a pescatarian who doesn't eat gluten and i always leave Poor Hendrix happy. read more

My daughter and I had dinner there tonight. It was outstanding from start to finish! If you are a traditional martini drinker, I recommend the 13th Colony Gin. It is from a local brewery in Americus in a London Dry style. So goo, I had to have two!! The small plates were great. We shared the Mussel Crostini and the Chicken Liver Pate. Both were fantastic.
