Summit Thai is a welcome break from the wasteland of fast food chains occupying the rest of Route 10. For only $8.95, they have some pretty solid lunch special options. With the lunch special, you have the option of either 3 chicken dumplings, one vegetable spring roll, or a salad with peanut dressing. I opted for shrimp pad kee mao with chicken dumplings, while my friend ordered beef green curry with the spring roll. All lunch special dishes come with a side of rice, with the exception of noodle dishes. I enjoyed my pad kee mao, which was a pretty decent sized portion - it had a strong basil flavor and a little bit of heat. I also liked the chicken dumplings, although they were a little too oily. However, I didn't like the green curry as much - the slices of beef were tiny and too tough, the curry tasted watered down, and the string beans were undercooked. The service was great, especially considering how many customers they had to tend to. It gets pretty busy around 12-1, so if you're in a hurry, you may want to call your order in advance. For only $8.95 during lunch hours, you can't really go wrong with this place. It's probably not the most authentic Thai place you'll come across, but at the very least it satisfied my craving for drunken noodles. read more

This place is tucked away through a hallway but it's pretty darn good. I got the pad thai and asked for it to come with vegetables. Also, when I asked if they could make it spicy, they ask you from a level of one to five, how spicy? I chose three, which was perfect. My friends had chosen four for theirs and it came with jalapenos then and they weren't too bad for my spice level (warning you, I love my spice while others think I've got the mouth of a dragon for what I can put up with). For appetizer, I got the summer roll with vegetables, which was really refreshing especially for the warm weather we were having. For dessert, I chose the tartufo, which isn't "traditional" Thai cuisine but it was what I needed after the meal. It was a bit on the frozen side but hit the spot. The waitress was really nice also and attentive (it helped that the place was empty that day actually). The bathroom is also through a door and down the hallway a bit, which was a bit odd but just the way it's set up. I highly recommend this place and remember: it's BYOB! I came here with a friend who has been to the other location in East Hanover. I checked out the Yelp reviews on both locations and was curious to the discrepancy in the ratings. This location is rated only 3 stars while the East Hanover location is rated 4 stars. My friend and I have never been to this location, but my friend said the other location is good, so I trusted her judgment and assumed this location would be equally good. I thought wrong. We were warmly greeted by our server but rudely thrown off by the decor. The decor, while nice in concept, seemed out of place... literally. I was also thrown off by the service. There appeared to be two servers for five tables, yet the service was slow. I assume this is because of the takeout orders. Now, I was understanding of the slow service once I realized why it was slow, but then I started to wonder why so many people have ordered takeout here because the food isn't even good. I'm not an expert in Thai food, but I did not feel like the food was authentic. I ordered a green curry that wasn't spicy (???). My friend and I also split an order of spring rolls, which tasted like coleslaw wrapped a spring roll wrapper. The dipping sauce for the spring rolls was bright yellow, not the usual orangey, vinegary, sauce. I'm almost positive it was canned pineapple juice with a little something else. Especially for the price and portion size, there are many other Thai restaurants in the area that are better. My friend was disappointed in this Summit Thai, especially in comparison to its other location, and so was I. read more

Sadly this restaurant has gone completely down hill. The server was lovely and replaced our salad when we were unhappy with the taste of the dressing. We realized that something was rancid in the salad. Upon taking home the new salad to eat the next day, I found that it was the tofu that was actually rancid and even though I recooked in the hope of having a good salad, the tofu was inedible. When tofu spoils, its truly awful. The peanut dressing formed a layer of fat on top which couldn't be eaten either. There was no balance of flavor in the Pad Thai. It was noodles with sweet sauce. The potato appetizer puff was the only enjoyable flavor. This restaurant desperately needs to be updated. The floor seemed dirty and the bathroom really old. Whoa! Does this place have new owners or new chefs or a new something? Out of hunger and desperation, I gave this place another shot after many months of driving out of town for Thai, and was I in for a surprise. The food was PHENOMENAL! My go to - Tofu Pad Thai was perfect, the Thai salad with peanut dressing was delicious and Chicken Red Curry was even better the next day. Every bite was met with mmm, mmmm, mmmmm. My son and wife decided to meet at this restaurant for lunch yesterday. From the moment we entered the restaurant we were greeted very warmly and escorted to our table. I ordered the #36 and my son ordered #44. Sorry I don't remember what my wife order. #36 was placed before, the amount of duck placed before me was noteworthy. In my quest to sample every Thai place within 20 minutes' driving distance, I hit Summit Thai last week, and it was.... just okay. The food was average. Not the worst Thai food I've had in the area but definitely not the best (Siam House in Scotch Plains takes that honor). The other problem is that since it's in Summit, prices for the same dishes are significantly higher. It's at the high-end of "$$ - Moderate" on the Yelp scale. On the plus side, with the Summit location also comes more updated and generally fancier decor than most Thai restaurants. It's still a BYO, though, so you can enjoy the swanky atmosphere with a nice bottle of wine and not break the bank. A reliable upmarket place to go if you're looking for that kind of thing but better food options can be had elsewhere, and for less money. read more

Honestly, after eating at so many great Thai places back in CA, I have very high expectations, and the food really didn't satisfy any of it. The place is clean and nice and the pricing is very good. Unfortunately, the food just didn't have the bright and vibrant flavors I'm used to seeing at Thai places back here (Panvimarn in Long Beach is the best example). We tried various curries, the Basil Chicken, the Papaya Salad and the Pad Thai. All were bland and underwhelming. My meal, called the Red Devil with Basil, was no where near spicy enough, even after asking for 3 out of 4 on their spice scale. It just looked like they threw a bunch of chili sauce on top of the chicken, which only made the meal saltier, not hotter. There was no taste of basil and the chicken was just okay. I think this place can do a much better job of using chilies in the dishes to achieve the higher spice levels, not increased levels of chili sauce. I know this place means well, and the value here is good. But the quality and taste of food is no where near what I expect from a Thai restaurant. read more

Coming from the glorious Thai food offerings in Northern CA, I was a bit skeptical when I found myself in New Providence, NJ for training for work and somebody suggested Thai food for dinner. I walked into Summit Thai Cuisine mentally prepared for some mediocre Thai food and man, I was more than pleasantly surprised. It was more than decent, it was good!! I tried the beef satay, pad see ew and red curry. All were up to par with my (slightly elitist) Norcal Thai standards. Definitely give this place a try. It's also in a super cute area that I wish I had come to earlier in the day when all the shops were open. read more

I got my container of Drunken Noodle to-go ($12.50) and they filled it slightly over the half the container. All the Thai places I've been to in Boston/NYC are $2.00 less and double the portion size. I have come to Summit Thai twice because I live in Summit and it is local, therefore convenient. The food is mediocre and the service is lacking. I didn't enjoy the first visit because I thought the food was overpriced, quality was not so good, and my mother asked for her dish to be extremely mild and it was so spicy she couldn't eat it. I gave it a bite (usually I am fine with medium spice level and it was even too spicy for me). We asked them to fix it but it came back watered down, bland and tasteless. Oh yeah, and my thai iced tea was so 'over iced' that it was gone in 2 sips. That was the first time. I didn't want to go back, but we decided to give it one more try (a year later or so). Second time: My boyfriend liked his drunken noodles but said they weren't the best he has eaten. The rice portions are tiny and you have to pay for extra rice. Our service was awful, every plate was left on the table. I think the waitress was new so we can't be too harsh on her because her English was rough. However- the 'regular' staff that is there all of the time, they were helping/teaching her to wait tables and were doing a lousy job. They could have stepped in and taken away the empty appetizer plates covering the table, but they didn't. They took away everyone's plates before I finished, and as I was picking away at the pineapple chunks in my dish, they asked about dessert. (and that wasn't the new waitress, that was one of the regular staff). My duck dish was chewy. The only thing I liked was the pineapple in it. The duck was barely palatable. I ***rarely*** ever leave a plate and don't wrap it up 'to go' when I don't finish, but this one- I didn't wrap up. Chicken satay was cold and smelled bad..like old socks. Calamari completely lacked salt, pepper, or any flavor. If it wasn't for the dipping sauce, I wouldn't have been able to eat them. Dipping sauce helped. Drunken noodles- pretty decent vegetarian curry- also liked by the person that got it duck with pineapple curry- not good at all, duck meat was bad, and made my stomach hurt afterwards Overall we decided not to come here again. They give us RAW PORK when we dined there three nights ago. I am still so grossed out by it. Their fried fish is also a major disappointment. Overcooked fish with not too much flavor. I also can't believe that they still charge us for the pork (they did give us a different dish) and also discount whatsoever. I call that poor management and poor service. read more

Summit Thai is the in-town spot for my wife and I, and they have not failed. Whether it's delivery or eating in, their service is consistently good with a solid meal to go along with it! Their dumplings are delicious - warm and soft on the exterior, and then a bit of kick and a soft interior. Mixed with their ginger dipping sauce, it's a TREAT. I'm a huge Pad Thai guy, and every Thai place I go to must serve me their best plate of it. I never stray from this dish, as cliché as it is. Summit Thai's Pad Thai is pretty good, but NOT the best. It's not as peanut-flavored as I like, so if you're looking for that, they do lack that. However, the flavor is pretty good, as well as the noodle and meat quality. Also, no spice in their Pad Thai - bit of a bummer. The price for their meals, as well as their quality of food, gives it that 4/5 ranking. This is third Thai restaurant I've dined at in NJ and sadly another disappointment. Rice was so old I had to send it back. It tasted like it was made the day before, didn't finish and so they thought, "what the heck, serve it up again tonight." Mushy,like porridge without the broth. Texture and taste were off. Second batch was better, but a bit on the dry side. The pad thai was decent, though the noodles were overcooked by a few minutes. They were tending towards mush but overall eatable. The Masaman chicken and the curry beef were both on the sweet side, not enough acid to cut through the sweetness of the coconut milk and underseasoned. Barely tasted the lemongrass. The best thing I had was the duck. If I went back, and that's a big if, that was almost really good. The sauce was seasoned well but had a soy sauce taste that surprised me because I don't think I've had that flavor in a dish before in a Thai joint. Almost tasted like American Chinese food. The wait staff I have to say was attentive and the complimentary ginger tea was good. Pungent, in a good way. Very gingery but liked it with a nice balance of sweetness that wasn't overly sweet like the chai teas most of these places serve. A few tweaking of the seasoning and adding more acid like lemons and vinegars could make this place much better. read more

Being that my usual Thai spots are in New York City, I was not expecting a good one in Summit, New Jersey. And you might even miss this place if you don't look carefully, since the main entrance is buried a little bit inside the building. My wife and I have ordered take-out from Summit Thai a few times. We have tried the Pad Thai, Massaman Curry, and Pineapple Fried Rice. The dishes that we have tasted so far are cooked very well, and the curry flavors in the sauces are awesome. From what I can tell, the ambiance in the restaurant is nice and private.. Perhaps we can try sitting in the restaurant one day. read more

These people are CHEAP and LAZY. I ordered a minced chicken dish that I get at my usual Thai spot in Cranford. I always order $3 extra chicken and an extra white rice on the side so that there's a shareable portion. These people are the only ones that refuse to give me extra minced chicken. They are adamant that the additional chicken can only be sliced, because "the minced chicken is already portioned out and we can't take from another portion". They refuse to chop up extra chicken, therefore they don't get the extra $5 they would have made on my order. Bad food is one thing but cheap and lazy? I would not go to this restaurant again. Food is not tasty, small portions, big prices. $125 for 4 of us. Nice dining room, but a bit cramped as 4 of us were seated around a small square table. Food came quickly but was not good, so we were out of there in under an hour. Spring roll appetizers (4 to an order) were delicious but small, and came with a pineapple sauce. Calamari was good but the Thailand Restaurant in Clark is better. Coconut milk soup "Tom Kha" came in a very small bowl and was very tart. I do not recommend ordering beef there. The Beef with Fresh Garlic and the beef in the Drunken Noodles is very tough. We couldn't eat it. I asked for mild Drunken Noodles and got spicy instead. The duck special was tasty. The Salmon Cha Cha Cha was a bit fishy but the sauce was delicious, similar to hot and sour sauce in Chinese cooking. read more

Went there over the weekend with some family that lives in the area, it was my first time there but my family has been there before. The atmosphere is really nice, the walls are brightly colored, there are cool decorations along the walls and they have soothing music playing. The staff is very friendly, they remembered my family members and even their orders from the last visit. The food was great, we had dumplings and the fried calamari to start and I had pineapple chicken fried rice and my family had pork fried rice, ginger duck and see-ew. For some reason, Summit's relative affluence translates into a surprisingly high ratio of mediocre restaurants. Summit Thai is a typical Asian place that seems to do 90% of its business as take out, the odd windowless dining room through a long corridor notwithstanding. You know what you'll get if you've ever ordered from a Thai place on seamless; vegetables that likely came from big frozen bags out of the Sysco truck, chicken and pork with roughly the same color, consistency, and flavor.
