Charkoal Portuguese Grill is conveniently located at the Berkley Heights train station. This first visit for takeout proved to be really good experience. I ordered the Garlic Shrimp, which came with Rice & French Fries. The rice tasted freshly made and was plentiful; the Garlic Shrimp was well seasoned and the aroma alone made me eager to taste. Once I got home with my order I couldn't wait to dive in. The food was still hot and ready for me to devour. I enjoyed the meal immensely, but could have done without the fries because as always, when fries are covered in an aluminum pan, they lose their crispness; other than that, everything was great; I will most definitely go back & try other menu items.

What a great dinner! On this rainy summer night, it was so pleasant and peaceful (ironic for being next to train tracks, right?) to sit outside and have a great meal. The service was so nice! So sweet and gave us the perfect amount of attention. We are so pleased with this place.

We found charkoal Portuguese and had their food last nite. Small gem in Berkley heights. We ordered the kale soup, fish soup, grilled steak, fried fish sandwich and cod special. The portions were v generous and the food was delicious. Have plenty of LO's for today. And oh the bread was real fresh Portuguese rolls which was sooo good. We topped it off w flan n tiramisu. Oh my they were so good. Thank you Andre for a delicious dinner. We will be back again to try other items on ur the menu.

I don't what to rave about first... the amazing food, the ridiculous quality of portions, the friendly and welcoming owners/staff... so I'll rave about them all! A take out dinner will easily serve as leftovers for days to come... the Chicken is fall off the bone juicy & flavorful. The veggies wonderfully crisp with a tang! -A perfect compliment to the mountain of rice that accompanies each platter. I've eaten here just a handful of times and each time I don't know why we waited so long to come back. Keep up the fantastic business!

Picadinho. Delicious.

I started with 2 Beef Empanadas. They were hot with a crispy outside and a soft and tender inside. They were good. Brasa offers a variety of fillings for their Empanadas like Chicken, Pork, or Beef. I then chose for my main dish their Large size Chicken Picadinho. It's enough for two people. I must say after trying many other places that Brasa Wood Fired Grill has the best Picadinho in the area. What makes theirs so good is they add potatoes and sausage in it with the Chicken and Yellow Rice. Their Yellow Rice was very moist and tender it wasn't dry like other places. I really enjoyed every bite. Brasa offers Salads, and a Variety of different Sandwiches, Sides like Sweet Plantains, Mexican Street Corn, Burgers, Shrimp in Garlic Sauce, Wings, Shrimp Ceviche and more. This place is casual with a warm and cozy feel. The staff is very nice and friendly. They do have some seating for dining in. The food is delicious! This will definitely be my go to for Portuguese BBQ.

We came to the…read moreSanta train nearby and were starving when we got out so we took to Yelp to help us find something yummy to eat and landed here. We were a party of 7 so we had to wait a few minutes for a table since it is a smaller restaurant. But this gave us an opportunity to look at what people were ordering and make the right choice! Here are my two HIGHEST recommendations: get the garlic shrimp with sausage (ask for extra bread) and the half roasted chicken with ribs, get a SMALL side of black beans. The chicken and ribs are enough to feed two people easily, but you truly CAN NOT miss out on these garlic shrimp. I dream of them often and think about taking the one hour drive to Flemington just to get them. The service was also extremely friendly and were not bothered that our kids were playing with Legos on the table and we kept asking for additional orders of things we liked....like the shrimp and sausage. Please do yourself a favor and make sure to go check them out! Did I mention I would definitely be sure to order their garlic shrimp and sausage??

Can't fight it. The waitress talked me down from a full size platter to half size... then said we would like their soup? umm... unclear on what you're selling... but I'll go with the half sized (for one person that is the right amount). Next they brought out bread. Didn't seem fresh baked. I tried the bbq sauce (yellow dispenser) and hot sauce (red), both "meh" flavor, doubt either is homemade. The main course: I ordered cubed chicken. Indeed, the half platter can feed a whole family. But it came with other ingredients not listed on menu. The rice has carrots and peas, also not listed. Sauce was good at least, brown and... well a bit oily and salty though. "Seems like instant rice?" was feedback I heard. Lesson to restaurant: the amount of things that you learn only by receiving your food should be zero. Put everything up front. My stars are coming elsewhere with me.

The parking was actually full when we arrived, possibly because of the bar using the same lot. But there is an elevated connected lot for the bowling alley that has plenty of parking. I have to say that the best thing about this place is the service: everyone was very friendly, and quick to attend us. Food was great, except maybe the flake fish (first course). Seemed more Spanish to me than Portuguese though. Portions were huge... actually had leftovers from a dish, which is the first for me from a tasting menu. The prices were reasonable In terms of why I'm giving this 4 star instead of 5: -we were seated at the "Chefs counter", but did not really have a view of the prep, which was really far away. Basically could just see the fireplace. The sister restaurant Heirloom is a much better chef's counter setup where you are seeing everything -Dishes seemed to be regular menu type dishes (just smaller portions), as opposed to super interesting types that you would expect from a tasting menu -Beverage pairing was okay... didn't really love the wines For these reasons, I'd likely return, but just stick to the regular menu/ experience.

We arrived about 8 pm and were greeted quickly and asked if we had a reservation. Place was maybe at 40% capacity so we got a table right away. They have a big menu with lots of interesting choices. For an appetizer we had grilled octopus. The dish lacked flavor and looked like it was just thrown together. Definitely not worth the $18.95. For dinner Sandra had filet wrapped in bacon. It was cooked exactly as she ordered but was definitely a bit chewy and it also lacked flavor. I had a 16oz ribeye. I'm very picky with my steak as I like it black and blue and lots of places can't get it right. This place actually got it right and it was cooked perfectly. The flavor was also good as it was cooked in a garlic butter sauce and it had a bit of bark on outside. Only problem is the steak was chewy. Both pieces of meat were subpar when it comes to quality. The vegetables that came with our meal were steamed and had zero flavor. Where is the traditional garlicky lemony flavor? Definitely not here that's for sure. Overall experience was average but in my opinion food is below average both in quality and flavor. Prices for what you receive are where they should be for most items. If the quality of meat was better the prices would be higher as they are in some of our other go to Portuguese restaurants. The old saying stands- you get what you pay for. Service was good as our server was prompt and answered all of our questions. Ambiance is very nice. It's warm and inviting. Will we go back probably to try something different on the menu and hopefully it has more flavor. Enjoy.

Where to start?!…read more Parking is a nightmare. There's only a small parking lot behind the restaurant. Half the spaces are for the liquor store next door with 15 minute limit and tow warnings. Parking on the street is not permitted. Had to make 5 laps around the block and wait for a space to open. I called Nero's while making laps to see if they could take us. I was one more lap away from going home. So frustrating! There's supposed to be a parking lot attendant, but he was no where to be found. Parking lot smells like weed. Probably the attendant. Hostess is a bit of a curmudgeon. I booked the reservation and specifically asked for a square 4 top. She tried to seat us at a rectangular table for 4, insisting it was a square. Basic geometry. Dining room is depressing, dull, crowded, and noisy. Too many tables jammed in there. And a lot of them are 2 tops. Just an aggravating vibe. The people here on Yelp who think the vibe is inviting need to get out more. They sat us next to kitchen door, which opens every 10 seconds. Annoying. Fried calamari and octopus salad were both tough and chewy. Likely frozen. Cesar salad was decent, but that's hard to mess up. Rib eye was way too fatty and chewy. Marbling is one thing but this was more like a prime rib. Other entrees were non-descript. Meh. Waiter was nice but too busy. Not enough attention paid to us. Overall this place tries hard but finds subject difficult. The parking lot attendant has the right idea. We won't be back.
