So I've thought long and hard about acceptable reasons for not giving Polonica 5 stars: One: You've got the Michelin Guide stuck way up your ass, and can't believe that there could be a worthy dining option they haven't rated. That's ok. Silver spoons and Michelin Guides go well together. Also, only a moron could've said, "The unexamined life isn't worth living". Two: You're a hopeless romantic. Emphasis on: "hopeless". Remember that romantic dinner in Krakow, with the full moon, and that lovely band many years ago? True. Nothing would compare to that meal. That might also explain why the movie was called "Forget Paris", and not "Forget Poland". Three: You're cheap, er, frugal. That's ok. After all, the price of a serving of Coca Cola did not change for 70 years after its introduction in 1886! Seriously, why should the price of a meal go up these days? Also, a sit-down meal where you leave with your clothes bursting at the seams IS still way more expensive than what you had in college, no matter that you spent less than $ 20 for it in NYC! Four: You've got standards. Good for you. It shouldn't matter that you're genetically challenged when it comes to menu selection. So what, if 30 other people love a restaurant, but when you selected one dish from the 85 available options, you didn't think it was perfect.... like in that place which shut down. Every dish must warrant 5 stars, otherwise why have it on the menu? Five: You're privately upset that it's politically incorrect to make fun of the Poles anymore. Damn, now even their economy is doing better than that of others in the European Dis-Union? Bugger. Ok, now that I've gotten that out of my system, let me sing the virtues of Polonica: You would be hard pressed to find a better meal in NYC, where both vegetarians and non-vegetarians leave happy! From the Ukrainian Borscht to the Potato and Mushroom Pierogies and Potato cutlets - there's a five star experience available to all vegetarians. You would also be hard pressed to find a better selection of soups, and not just the Borscht, I've also loved the cucumber and the Sauerkraut soups! The entrees, while simple and almost home-cooked, are extremely well executed, accompanied by a magnificent, colorful salad plate. The Hungarian Pancakes with Goulash brought home a different interpretation of an entrée popular through the ages. Their Kompot is the best I've had in the city, far superior to and fruitier than the many watered down Central Asian versions of the drink I've tried in the past few months. True, I wasn't bowled over by the Pyzy (potato dumplings stuffed with meat and served with fried onions), but then I'm no hater waiting for a "gotcha" moment. There is a pretty substantial Eastern European population in Bay Ridge, including my family, so its always nice to have restaurants like Polonica around. Its your no nonsense, strictly Polish home cooking type of place. Good-to-know tidbits... Its cash only and there is no alcohol on the menu. You can, however, bring your own booze, which is typical of restaurants like these on Brighton. The owner did specify its a bottle per person max, so that's something to keep in mind. I went two doors down to a Polish grocery store for some beer. If you want something authentic, I recommend getting a bottle of Lech or Zywiec. Food... I ordered cheese and potato pierogi (about $6). There are 7 pieces, your choice of fried or boiled, and they come with fried onions and sour cream. For the entree, I ordered stuffed chicken breast (about $10) with mushrooms and potatoes. The mushroom sauce was amazing but the chicken was sadly too dry. I do recommend their stuffed cabbage, though. That is really delicious. I also tried their Ukrainian borsht and was pleasantly surprised! Much closer to home cooked than my frightful experience at the Russian Tea Room a few months back. I've been going to Polonica in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn for over 5 years now. It's the best comfort food in the entire city of NY! And it's the best place to go to on a cold winter day. The portions are huge, authentic, and cheap. ... the owner, Elizabeth, is always working. She does it all there -- waits on tables, oversees all the cooking in the kitchen, and chats with the regulars. She's the hardest-working restaurant owner you'll ever meet. Now to the food: to start, I got the cucumber soup (which is actually pickle soup). Soooooo yummy. ... Then, for my meal, I got the stuffed cabbage, as I always do. And it was amazing. Too much for a 5'2", 108 lb woman to eat, but I tried! God, I tried. I can just eat one of the two stuffed cabbages on the plate. It's too much food! ... Oh, and each dish comes with a selection of polish sides (red cabbage kraut, carrot salad, a green salad, sauerkraut, cole slaw, and mashed potatoes). The only downside is that they don't have their liquor license, but it's no big deal b/c there's a liquor store across the street that sells wine and Polish beers. **CASH ONLY- NO ONE EVER TELLS YOU THAT!** This place is AWESOME! So glad I found it walking randomly around Bay Ridge with my parents. Even more awesome...we came around 2ish so we beat the apparently, large, lunch crowd. As it's been said, this place is mad small so I think we had the right idea. There are only 5 tables and really slow service (there's one lady, the owner I think)... I would dock a point for that but I'm not feeling so heartless today. The food is really that good. I haven't been to that many other Polish/Eastern Euro places in the city thus far but I had heard this is the best. I'm not surprised given the area is full of so many ethnic delights. And I love love Polish food. My mom even cracked jokes as she reminisced that she fed me frozen pierogis for lunch every day when I was in grade school. The menu is pretty extensive. We all started off with a soup each. My dad had the bean and potato- good. A bit salty maybe, but lots of beans and potatoes. My mom's cucumber was a bit better- it was pickled so there was a sour kick to it. I had the borscht with dumplings. FANTASTIC. If you're used to thick borscht, like the way Velselka does it... you might be disappointed because this one is quite thin. Thin broth (chicken stock broth), with the right combo of beet and tomato.. very tangy. The dill atop was a nice touch. But the highlight were the dumplings- so rich with mushroom flavor (the filling). Super yummy. $4.50 each. Then, we ordered a side of potato pancakes. Best I've ever had...including shitty places like Essex that raves about theirs. Firstly, this were no flat and super deep fried that it was crunchy. It was greasy don't get me wrong but had substance and thickness to it..and to caution, they were BIG. Had a little bit of sour cream on the side- good, and standard. And standard apple sauce. $6.75. Mains- my dad got the famous stuffed cabbage. I didn't try this because sadly I don't eat pork but he said it was very good. It looked like a biiiig portion. Had the standard ingredients- pork, rice, and lots of yummy tomato sauce atop. Giant portion- comes with 2. You could be full on one. My mom had the chicken meatballs. Even though ground chicken doesn't taste like much, these were good! They were also GIANT- 3 of them. They had some kind of creamy (not thick though) sauce over them with carrots. Both my parents got a side of kasha- super healthy buckwheat grain type of thing. Yummy, but maybe a bit overcooked here? The other choice is mashed potatoes. Both of these mains were some $12. I ordered just a side of mixed pierigois- 2 of 3 flavors: mushroom and potato (owner's recommendation)- very good. Something about their mushrooms are like crack! Then, the saukerat and potato (meh) and the cheese and potato-classic. These were good but the potato pancakes blew me away more (and the soups). My boyfriend and I had stopped in once to have dinner with some neighbors, took a look at their menu and were so disappointed that Polonica did not take credit cards. We did decide however we would return and give then a try someday. We gave it another shot today, since it was such a gorgeous day, and didn't want to venture too far from home (finals are upon us). We were so happy we did. We shared an order cheese blintzes (Ser Nalesniki) which were served with sour cream and apple sauce. My first time, and all I can say YUMMY. I had an order of Ukrainian Borscht (Barszcz Ukrainski); another first, another winner. My boyfriend had Red Borscht w/ Dumplings(Czerwony Barszcz Z Uszkami), I really liked it, and I'm sure he'll let you know what he thought of it in his own review. For my entree I ordered Meatballs (Kotlet Mielony) which was served with mashed potatoes, salad and sauerkraut. It reminded me meatloaf. I love meatloaf, and I loved my meal. My boyfriend ordered Stuffed Cabbage (Golabki), I thought it had great flavor. Overall we had a very cool lunch out on a beautiful day in Bay Ridge. I must say we do really wish they'd take credit cards but they are on the less expensive side in a very homey restaurant, with a very nice and helpful waitress/owner, Elizabeth. We will be back. I'm Polish, but my mom's the kind that magically manages to burn absolutely everything. Luckily, I've still managed to get a dose of my heritage from time to time thanks to Polonica. This place has been there for me, with it's ginormous meals and low prices, throughout my life. They are warm, hearty meals--perfect for cold weather. However, I can't really vouch for their meat dishes myself since I'm a vegetarian, but everyone I've been with seemed really pleased with whatever it was they ordered. I hardly ever sit in, but I usually order, for pick-up: boiled potato (sometimes potato and cheese) pierogi, tomato soup, cheese blintzes. I eat half the soup and half the pierogi, saving the rest for the next day, and I have the cheese blintzes the next morning: I like to fry them up a little bit on the pan, just enough so that they've got a nice crispy shell. Depending on my mood, I'll either top them with the sour cream & applesauce that they come with, or I'll give them a dab of blackcurrant preserves (you can find a jar at the Polish deli next door). Also, I LOVE their salads/sides. This is the only place I'll eat things like red cabbage, carrots, and mashed potatoes. They just make it so good. Seriously. I won't even touch raw carrots otherwise, but their salad is so yummy! And how do they keep their mashed potatoes so flavorful? Yum. Was torn between 4-or-5 stars since I'd like it if there were more vegetarian options, and it would be cool if the decor were nicer. Not that it isn't nice, but I think it would be cool if they had some pictures from Poland framed up or something. But the fact that their meals are just so darn huge and really well made, and the staff is seriously friendly, made me go with 5. ;) read more

This is the only polish restaurant near me and I finally got to try it. From the outside it looks really nice but when I stepped inside I definitely felt like it was lacking something. Once I tasted the food I understood. This place is all about good, homemade food. There are so many soups but today I wasn't feeling adventurous so I ordered the chicken soup. It was really simple but good! Lots of thin long noodles in a simple clear broth that is garnished with some dill and carrots. I ordered a mixed plate of pierogis- cheese/potato, spinach/potato, and meat. When I saw them I was a little worried that they looked a little oily. I couldn't have been more wrong because they weren't oily at all- delicious and fresh. The sour cream and onions were a great compliment. I also got the kielbasa appetizer. Polish sausage is definitely different from other types I've had before. Very flavorful and huge! After those 3 appetizers (shared)I was so full! I wanted to try so many things but when I see pork chops on a menu I can't resist and had to try it. They have 2 types- a plain version and one with melted cheese. I got the plain one. The waiter brought this massive pork chop over and it had been breaded and baked I believe. It had a dry (good dry) crunch on the outside and a really tender piece of pork inside. The entree also came with this side plate of multiple slaws. That might have been my favorite part. Red cabbage, green cabbage, beets, salad, carrots...it was so good I ate my friends slaw plate too! We also got something a little more tradition and ordered the stuffed cabbage. You get two massive pieces of stuffed cabbage. The mixture inside was so yummy! Even though they stuff it with ground pork it was an extremely light filling. I don't know if that even makes sense but if you try it you will understand. I had to bring all of the entrees home because they were too big to finish after those appetizers. The best part is that everything taste homemade. We ate a mid-afternoon meal at Polonica today, together with a friend who lives in Bay Ridge (it was also her first time eating there). We each ordered the same thing; a set of seven pierogies (of which there were many choices) and the cold cucumber soup. The food was really *delicious*, our server was delightful, the prices were a real bargain ($27.70 total including tax [before tip]) and the interior was very pleasant & quiet. It's a small restaurant, so it probably gets crowded at peak times - although they're open for about twelve hours/day. read more

A-maz-ing. We came here on a weeknight while we happened to be in Bayridge. The space is cute and small. I loved the little fake window they had that looked like you were looking into a garden, I think. Anyway, the server was nice. We ordered potato and cheese pierogies. The server let us order both fried and boiled (3 fried, 2 boiled). Both were absolutely delicious. I think my fiance and I both liked the fried best, but boiled were super good too. The sour cream they came with was the best we'd ever had. For entrees, my fiance had the Hungarian pancakes which were potato pancakes with beef goulash. They were thick and meaty and delicious and super filling. I ordered the meatballs which were made of pork. They came in a brown sauce and I ordered mine with mashed potatoes. They were delicious and also super filling. The salad that comes with the meal was superb and a large portion. It included cole slaw, red cabbage, carrots with orange juice and beets and maybe something else. I LOVE red cabbage and it was just the right amount of sweet and sour. Fiance loved the beets. Overall the experience was excellent. Great prices and value for the amount of food. We both took home leftovers. The service was a bit slow but I think she just was letting us take our time. Obviously I am not Polish, so this was not a "Coming home" type experience for me. Polonica has been at this location since 1991 and under the ownership of this lovely couple since 1995. As a lifelong Bay Ridge resident, I am embarrassed to say until my Yelp quest, I had never really heard of it. Pity, since when I mentioned this place to our Polish friends, they all raved about it. It was my first time eating Polish foods, and Polonica was a good experience. We got a chance to meet Elizabeth and her one year old son, before she left us for the evening in her husband Fabrizio's capable hands. I try to eat as healthily as possible and usually pass on fried foods, fatty meats, etc. So, as I was looking at the menu, I was wondering if I was going to find something to eat. Sandra S, one of the other Yelpers said the food was "Heavy." Sorry to say, her meaning didn't click or I would have been better prepared. Let me spell it out for my health conscious Yelpers: most of the food here is fried and/or made with cream. The portion sizes are huge, so you can compound the fattiness and take home food for the next day's lunch or dinner. Like other Yelpers before us we ordered many foods to try and ate family style: Soups: My Mushroom Soup was very tasty, but it was cream based, so I would have ordered something else had I not been so oblivious. Both the Pea and Chicken Noodle Soups were great. The Pea soup is not "Split Pea," so it doesn't have that "Linda Blair" look to it. It is more a Lentil, Pea and Vegetable soup, in a nice broth with some interesting spices; easily one of my favorites. The Chicken Noodle was more traditional, but equally good. Pierogies (w/ apple sauce & sour cream): They are prepared either Fried or Boiled. I hated the fried: the oil just oozed out of it. However the Boiled Pierogies (Mushroom & Potato, Cheese & Potato and Spinach & Potato) were phenomenal. A little picky note: I didn't like that the sour cream and applesauce covered the Pierogies. I would ask for them on the side next time. Potato Pancakes: I was in the minority on this. I really didn't like these. It reminded me of a huge high end Hash Brown. It was tasty: I had a couple of bites, but I couldn't get past the grease! However, the other people at the table loved them. The Breaded Fried Chicken cutlet was my kids' favorite. I cut it up into strips and they felt like they were eating really good chicken fingers. It was good quality meat, nicely breaded, and very moist. On Fabrizio's recommendation I ordered the Potato Pancake with the beef goulash. I have had very good luck when restaurant owners suggest a favorite dish, but this time my luck ran out. Since I hated the Potato Pancake as an appetizer, an even larger one (two actually!) with beef cubes, peppers and brown gravy in the middle, was a disappointment. I picked out some of the meat, and I found the cubes tender and flavorful. Since it was my fault for not communicating my preferences, I will not hold it against them. If you like that kind of dish, I think you will find their preparation very appealing. Stuffed Pepper and Cabbage: well thank God for Family Style or I would have gone home hungry and annoyed! The stuffed Peppers were not only my favorite; they made my face light up. The dish consists of TWO huge peppers stuffed with a lean pork and rice mixture, topped with a delicious Tomato Sauce. It tasted like nothing I have ever eaten and I couldn't wait to have the leftover pepper for lunch the next day. It was an instant favorite that I can't wait to have again. Finally we had a sample of the Cheese and Fruit Blintzes (apple, peach, strawberry and blueberry). They were all good, but I enjoyed the strawberry the best. It was like a fried Crepe. It was tasty and I would have them again as a special treat, but I much prefer French Crepes, which are a lot lighter. Some final thoughts: as noted elsewhere, they do not have a liquor license. If you forget to bring your own favorite from the house, you can walk across the street to a Deli or a Liquor Store and purchase whatever libation suits you. In fact, dinners can take Polonica's Komport (homemade fruit punch with lots of fruit on the bottom) mix in a little vodka and have a naughty adult beverage. Fabrizio and Elizabeth should be congratulated for providing a wonderful little spot that serves homemade Polish food at very reasonable prices. I am sorry that we didn't discover Polonica earlier, but as we were leaving Fabrizio gave us their take out menu, and I am sure we will be taking advantage of their free delivery. read more

when we first arrived to brooklyn, the BF and i wanted to try the "neighborhood" gems and after reviewing yelp, we wanted to see what the hype was about here. the first day we came here, they were closed. so we didn't get to try this place until the very last day of our visit. the restaurant is small with just a few tables. there was only one staff member there who seated us and took our order. i've never had authentic polish food so i didn't know what to order. but the server was very nice and recommended the popular dishes. the BF had the polish platter which comes with the stuffed cabbage, kielbasa and perogis. i actually wanted that but ended up going with the stufed bell pepper (which was the server's other recommendation). all the entrees come with a big plate of pickled salad which was delicious! the entrees were just OK in my opinion. for a place with such high reviews and apparently voted the best polish restaurant in NYC, i really wanted to be "wowed". yes, i understand not experienced polish food before, how i could i compare? well, simple, if i'm trying something new, i dont have a bias opinion and a fresh palate, therefore if it's truly amazing, i would feel it. but this time, i didn't. you do get to bring your own wine or other alcohol with no additional fees, which is actually really nice. all restaurants should offer that ;) read more

I love this place, especially because the "salads" they provide with most entrees are fantastic (Carrot salad, Sauerkraut, Cole Slaw & Beet Salad). In fact, we have often ordered just those salads as a meal. Kielbasa dinner is terrific, and works great for take-out or delivery (which, by the way, is very fast). I've tried most of what they offer, and I would caution against the Stroganoff-type recipes -- the beef they use is fairly tough and tasteless -- but you can't go wrong with just about anything else on the menu. read more

Flies all about. Food came after 20 mins. Meh. I got the sample plate-- pierogis, kielbasa, golubki. Sausage was pale with decent flavor, not Polska kielbasa. Pierogis over fried. The best was the side cabbages w a good horseradish flavor. I interrupted the waiter from his phone to get my check. He saw I didn't eat much & asked why. Been here twice...but not a fan of going and eating in because the ambience isn't all that BUT THE FOOD.... wow- the food is off the hook. Very homey homemade food..and you can really tell. Love this place! First, they deliver and second it's wonderful food! The pierogi's are what you'd expect but the Tripe Soup is the best! Also, really enjoyed the stuffed cabbage. The prices are more than fair and this place is much better than Teresa's in Manhattan. The restaurant is small but cozy and is located next to a Polish deli. The staff are efficient and friendly. If you eat in the restaurant bring your own alcohol because they don't serve any. If you get take out, fry up some white onion in garlic and olive oil to add to the pierogi's, and don't forget the sour cream! read more

The food was definitely delicious. The pierogies were amazing, and the sauce on the stuffed chicken was great (although the chicken was a little bit dry, but an excusable error with chicken breast). The kasha was yummy and reminded me of my childhood. The salads were a refreshing change of pace from the boring lettuce you usually get in other restaurants. My big problem, however, was with the service. Our server was not the woman who, from the comments I've read, apparently is the usual. We had a male server, and although he managed to take orders and deliver food and drinks to all five tables in the restaurant in a reasonable manner, he was otherwise inattentive, and frequently on his cell phone. It took a long time to get his attention When I informed him that he'd brought me the wrong dish (I asked for stuffed chicken, he brought me baked chicken), he actually argued with me. First he said that I had said 'baked,' and when the other two occupants at my table backed me up, he said I should have told him sooner (I told him about 5-10 minutes after I got the dish, as soon as I could get his attention again... he disappeared as soon as he delivered the meal.) It's okay with me when a server makes a mistake, and I would have been perfectly happy to wait for him to correct it. It would have been totally understandable, since he was clearly the only one there both serving and bussing tables, but to first argue with me and then try to blame me is inexcusable. All you have to say is, "I apologize, I must have misheard you." I'll go back, but I hope I don't get this server again. If I do, I'll speak loudly and clearly when I order, and if he can't pay attention to his job instead of his cell phone, he won't get a fair tip like we gave him this time (partially because my friend can't do math), even though we should have given 10% or less for the job he did. Also: Please put a "CASH ONLY" sign on your door so people can hit the ATM before they eat! Ahh, the flavors of my childhood! This reminds me so much of my mom's cooking and I keep returning time and time again (luckily it's only 3 blocks from my place). I love the stuffed cabbage, the potato pancakes, the pierogis, the cucumber soup, and both the red and white borscht. I recently had family in town and they also raved about the food. The only thing I don't love about this place is the atmosphere (and there has been times I skipped having dinner here because of it) but it could easily be fixed by simply dimming the lights. I then proceed to send my bat signal out and gathered my other friends who lived in Bay Ridge whom also never heard about this place and made it our mission to try it out. We called ahead and made a reservation because I heard the place was tiny. When we arrived they set up the table right next to the front window, which was the best seat in the house. Went here tonight and we loved this cozy restaurant. We had Pierogis as appetizers and I especially liked the spinach and potato Pierogis. My husband raved about the goulash, said it fell off his fork and the potato pancake was crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. I ordered the mushroom dumplings which were very filling and so tasty. Also the vegetable soup was chock full of vegetables in a delicious broth. We ordered blintzes for dessert and I loved the blueberry cheese blintzes, thin dough, almost like a crepe. Had Polish beer, very smooth. Prices were fair and service was attentive. I can't believe I lived a block away from this place for so long and never ate here. Now, my Mom isn't Polish...but she's an unbelievable cook and the food tasted so much like her home cooking it was wonderful. From the beet salad and coleslaw (exactly like my Mom used to prepare) to the most tender and delicious chicken cutlet. The pirogies (fried) were crispy and shiny and flaky...and SO delicious. The bread lacked a home-baked texture and flavor...I guess that's my only dislike about the whole meal. If you find yourself in Bay Ridge Brooklyn and you want to eat some amazing polish cuisine...you have to try this little place. Came here last month to celebrate my bday. The menu was ver extensive, lots to choose from. I ordered the stuffed cabbage with minced meat. BF ordered the beef stroganoff, and the pan fried potato Perogies for the app. The Perogies were delish. It came with a dollip of sour cream and sauteed onions (YUM). Writing about it now makes me hungry. Can't say the same for the entrees, as it was a bit of a disappointment. The stuffed cabbage with minced meat just didn't have enough flavor for me. The beef stroganoff tasted a bit like from a can, and the beef was way too tough (like chewing on bubble gum). If we were to go back, the only thing we will order will be just the perogies. read more

Our favorite place to eat! We come every week and always leave happy and full. The best breaded chicken cutlet you will ever eat. Try it with mushroom and onions. Also can never have enough of the pickle soup and pierogies. An other dish often ordered is beef goulash. For someone who grew up in Poland this is the most authentic polish food you can get in New York. Amazing!!! And the prices are so cheap!!!!! read more

I'm not giving this a five because this place is just on the edge of authenticity. It's got great food, do be sure, but no pole would be fooled. Take, for example, the de volaille chicken (they call it de vollay or something) is as far from the polish version as a deep fried Oreo is from a nice fruit tart. I don't want to fault them for the food - it's hearty and tasty - but it's not really polish anymore. As background, my wife is polish and we head over there every year or so. We came to this place about ten years ago and it was a typical polish joint with surly staff and old standards - but you at least felt like you were back in Warsaw. The current owners are doing a good job giving the place a scrub and an update but we probably won't be back. read more

The food was really good -- for what I got. I spent $30 worth of food. I picked it up and when I got back home I noticed that I was missing my mashed potato side, my potato pierogi's and my apple sauce. If you can't trust the restaurant to give you everything you pay for, why go eat their food? read more

It feels like your in the families Dining Room. Grandma's recipes dominate the menu. The portions are huge! The complimentary asst. of appetizers and breads brought briskly to you are filling. lol Don't be tempted save the space for your main dish. And share with each other. The Goulash and the potato pancakes and the beet salad is pretty damn good. No room for dessert. Take it home if you want, but have a cup of coffee and relax for a few minutes. 5 stars +++ read more

What a great place. Everything is cooked fresh to order, fantastic Hungarian pancakes and best of all the nonalcoholic fruit punch they make is out of this world. Extremely nice staff and real local feel. Couldn't ask for a better Polish lunch. read more
