I wanted to be impressed. I wasn't. As others have noted, the food was just OK and the service was slow and inattentive. Only one table was occupied when we arrived for a late lunch on a weekend (4 persons waiting for dessert), yet the lone server was overwhelmed - too busy making coffee for four to take our order or even bring us water. I don't mind waiting for "home-cooked" food as advertised but, clearly, many of the items they offer were pre-prepared and needed only to be reheated. Nevertheless, the food took forever to arrive. Admittedly, the borscht, hunter's stew and assorted pickled salad were very good. While nicely presented and generous in size, everything else was just mediocre. The so-called "Best pierogi's in Brooklyn" were dry and tasteless. Same for the stuffed cabbage - dense, dry, no flavor. I recommend coming for the apple strudel - one portion consists of two large crepes (not really a strudel) stuffed with yummy fruit. Pricey but excellent. Oh, and the espresso was flavored (Yuck!) - mocha, I think. Much room for improvement here. read more

This place is LUCKY that the food is amazing. Because their service is terrible. Awful. Bad enough to make me only come every so often. I have been here before but it's been at least 6 months, and the service sucked then too. By the way, there was no one else in the restaurant when we went in, and only one other table by the time we left. I ordered the chef's pork chop and got the breaded pork chop. Big difference. Again, the food is amazing and I enjoyed my dinner even though it wasn't what I ordered. Since it took a very long time to get anything, I didn't want to send it back because who knows when I would have gotten what I wanted. My friend literally had to say she saw the salads before the waiter lifted his head from his cell phone to serve us. Too bad for Polonica. We've been ordering from Polonica for a few years, and food was always great until the last few times. I don't know what happened, but it seems that polish people don't prepare food there any more. I am Ukrainian, and I used to love their Ukrainian borscht soup, but last time it didn't taste like borscht at all. It was like puréed soup, and that's absolutely not borscht. Also, the side salad and mashed potatoes were flavorless. In addition to all that, they put mashed potatoes on the side, when we ordered kasha. I wish the owner will read my review and improve their food quality. Otherwise, they will lose a lot of customers. read more

On the outside looking in, this place doesn't seem like much. It's not very inviting and the seating/atmosphere is rather dated, but as soon as you try their food you whole perspective changes. It goes from "Eh I don't know if I should eat here " to "Wow! I cant believe I've been missing out on this food!" Perogies/Potato Pancakes/Beef Goulash you name it. It's all great. Now granted, i haven't been exposed much to Polish food so I don't know how authentic the food generally is, but I can say it's really good. All of the meals come with these pickled salads of beets/carrots/slaw.They are really tasty. The portions are large, the price is cheap, and the quality is good. I want to love this place but it is lacking. Their takeout leaves much to be desired and when dining in...well it is not the warmest place to eat out at. They are way overpriced and for the life of me I cannot figure out how they calculate their takeout orders because it does not match what is one their website and they do not give receipts (in my experience at least). The good: Soups -- especially the red borscht Chicken cutlet Hungarian pancake Pierogis -- especially the mushroom/potato The bad: Mushroom sauce -- tastes like it is from a packet and is ridiculously bland Salads -- again, taste like they are packaged. When we lived in Bay Ridge from 2007 to 2011, this was one of my wife's and my favorite restaurants. When we moved back to the neighborhood in September 2017, we were dismayed to see it closed down. So imagine how pleased we were to see that Polonica was just moving up 3rd Ave. to a new space! This is some of the city's best Polish food. I'm not going to get granular and talk about individual dishes, just suffice it to say that if you're in Brooklyn there's no need to go to the Lower East Side for good, hearty, flavorful, stick-the-ribs Polish cuisine. I came here a few years ago and remember it to be good, homey and filling. Things have changed, a bit. Since my husband is Polish I decided to take him here to satiate his Polish hunger. We had the tripe soup, braised very tender and soft...just a little salty. And the beef stronganoff..the beef was a bit dry for me. The sides that came were smaller then they used to be but still as good. Definitely a good spot to go to on a cold winter night. read more

A little hole in the wall, bad lighting and decor, needs renovations. But they're not trying to pass as fine dining. The server (and only employee I saw) didn't bring water or utensils without me asking. He seemed more interested in his phone. The Ukrainian Borscht was delicious! Warming, hearty, but not over-filling. The pierogies were just ok- the dough was flaky and crisp but the potato was gummy. The menu is very meat-centered with no vegetarian entrees. read more

It's honest, good food! Especially on cold winter days, when you want something hearty, and tasty. I love the potato pancakes....3 large come in an order, then slather with some sour cream and apple sauce. Move on to the stuffed cabbage, in a light red sauce yum! It comes with several types of slaw...carrot, saurkraut, etc. So much good food. I once described it as eating in your polish friends' grandmas house. Decor isn't much, but you don't go for ambience, you go for the warm food hug! read more

This is what amazing Polish food tastes like. The inside is small and sparsely decorated, but the food is so good. Potato pancakes were the star of my show, and the Hungarian Potato Pancake entree was even better. Stuffed cabbage was great, as were the pierogies. I pawned off the kielbasa (I have a weird texture issue with food) but it was also delicious. Get the homeade fruit punch!! It's not what I thought it would be like. All in all? Well worth it every dollar. Definitely glad I live around the corner and can get my stuffed cabbage fix when the mood strikes. read more

Polonica definitely doesn't remind me of my time in Poland, but to be honest, the food isn't horrible. I wish they had more vegetarian and non-Pork options, but the Hungarian Stew isn't bad. I also wish they served liquor, but it's a BYOB and they don't mind you bringing in a bottle of wine or beer from the store across the street. Fabriezo and Elizabeth, the couple who own Polonica and have since its inception, consistently make superb Polish food. Everything is so good, I recommend trying it all and the quality and quantity for the price is a great, so do treat yourself and either go or order a dish to go. My mother loves their salads (especially the beets as she loves beets), the beef stroganoff, the beef stew, the potato pancakes and blintzes. She especially loves that you can order your food to go. I've gone with a friend and we bought our own booze and proceeded to enjoy it and their fine food without any problems. I highly recommend Polonica. read more

No wonder why they've been in business for over 25 YEARS ! The soups are amazing! Simply the best in town, for appetizer try the mixed pierogies, or the potato pancakes. I love this restaurant. The atmosphere is warm and welcoming. It's a family run restaurant and the food definitely is home cooked. My favorite is the mushroom soup and fried cheese pierogis. They are so delicious with fried onions and sour cream. As far as the entrees, I like to try a new one each time. The chicken devoli is my sons favorite and so far I have loved every dish I tasted. Oh and the amazing salads they bring with your entree are delicious. Bring your appetite and expect to bring home lunch or even dinner for the next day too. We are from overseas. We were staying in Bay Ridge and searched yelp for a place to eat. Finally we found Polonica. What a GOAL!! At the begining I did not know what to order, i wanted to try many things, so did the other people in my party. We shared pierogis in many combinations, potato pancakes and blintzes. The food is amazing and priced very reasonably. It's been around for 20+ years, and now I understand why- just so yummy. I highly recommend their mushroom or their sauerkraut soup, and their regular boiled Keilbasa or the bacon wrapped, cheese stuffed version! (nom nom nom!). The people who rate this place high are insane. First when we arrived, there was only one waiter in the whole restaraunt and it was packed. We got shuffled around tables after being seated, which wasn't that big a deal, but considering all the other issues, it just added to the overall poor experience. #1 the drinks are brought out in plastic bottles. We ordered juice and tea, and they brought out a two bottles of minutemade and a snapple... bigtime fail. We asked for water as well and were brought a pitcher of tap ice water and tiny drink shot glasses to drink it out of, which was incredibly confusing and strange to us. #2 I asked the waiter which items he recommened, which was the stuffed cabbage, stuffed kiebasa, and the beef stroginoff. None of which were great. I got the cabbage which was a bland tasting pork and cabbage smothered in an extremely generic out-of-the-can tasting ragu type sauce. The kiebasa again was very generic, pre packaged tasting. I'm almost sure it was the peperage farm type you can buy at any grocery store. The Beef wasn't terrible and was by far the best of the 3 items we got, but was still nothing special and overall pretty bland. #3 WAY OVER PRICED. I would never return to this place for this kind of money. I am actually Polish, I'm not a great chef, but I know I could do 10x better than this at home. Good things were the pierogies and salads. If we had just stopped there I probably would have been much more satisfied. The waiter was quite friendly and doing his best too considering he was the only one there. read more

One of my favorite places in Brooklyn. Food is just amazing, homemade and fresh. Service is great, people are always nice and helpful. You should try every single dish in their menu. Start with soup: my favorite is Ukrainian borsch, vegetables and beans, you can ask for a spoon of sour cream, exactly like my grandma cooks. Try pirogi, fried or boiled, with sour cream and apple sauce. Hungarian pancakes are just Y UM! and Pork chop is so tender. Beef stroganoff, stuffed cabbage or pepper wont let you go home hungry. and yes.. side of mashed potatoes or kasha (buckwheat). Don"t forget about their Kompot (sweet fruity drink) with spoon on top, to make sure that you caught from the bottom of a huge glass fruits and tried them. I've been going to this place for many years and when I saw the 20th Anniversary sign out front, I felt it was about time I gave a review. I go here because it's a cozy place, not obnoxiously loud with hearty Polish food. The service is authentically Brooklyn. Polite, low key, not pretentious. The bread basket and pitcher of water with shot glasses to start is a nice touch. My favorite soup is the Ukranian borsch with sour cream, a healthy soup that warms my bones in the winter. The food is authentically Polish (I've been there) and have never had a complaint. It feels good to support a family owned business in Bay Ridge too. I like plenty of restaurants in Brooklyn, but when I want a Brooklyn-size meal to enjoy in peace, I go here. And the prices aren't a rip-off either!!! read more

I went here with a friend while we waited for a concert to start down the block at BarMatchless. This place is beyond amazing some of the best polish food you will ever have and for really cheap price. I was amazed that when I turned around to look at the kitchen that it was a older polish woman making all the food which added even more to me enjoying place even more. I have the luxury of having this place 100 feet from my front door. It's fantastic, the people are super nice, and it's reasonably priced. I typically pick-up cheese and potato perogies and soup on my way home from work. If you eat in, the place is BYOB, and there's a great little beer store across the street. The Village Voice said this place is the best Polish place in NYC. I haven't been anywhere else since these guys are so close to me and the experience is always great. Highly recommended. read more

Decided to come here last minute after a funeral. Called on our way there. By the time we arrived, table was set up for 11 people. Extremely accommodating and exceptional service. Food was beyond out expectations. So delicious and truly authentic. So comforting, just what we needed. Do not get discouraged by the fact the owner is not Polish, his wife is Polish and his knowledge of Polish cuisine is on point. Be prepared for a wait if you come with a larger party. All food is prepared fresh. Nothing frozen or reheated. Worth the wait!!! I cannot recommend the Hungarian Pancake enough!!! Best I've ever had!
