I was a little hesitant to try this place a couple weeks ago because the exterior looked a little shifty. But looking at the menu, I got really excited. And then when I actually got my food (carne asada, the number 2 meal), I was blown away. The meat was so juicy and tender, then you add the whole grilled onion, fresh pico de gallo, and their spicy avocado sauce...BOMB! You get a huge amount of food for $9. Great food at a good value. This is walk up/carry out only, no dining room. I (ashamedly) admit I've never tried the namesake chicken. I need to remedy that. The number 2 (Carne Asada) is my usual order. The entree and the sides are all fresh and hot. The Asada is mesquite grilled just like the chicken, and when you open up the container it's like heaven! I worked in Austin between undergrad and grad. school trying to figure "stuff out". During that time I discovered and fell in love in Taco Cabana and that loved continue for 15 years including the last couple of visits to Austin. My brother who now lives in Austin would always tell me that I was wasting my time and money on the Taco Cabana stuff when there were so many great "non gringo" taco joints. I never got brave enough to try one of these joints that he refereed to. While my wife was at a meeting and I had time to kill, I tried this place per the recommendations of Yelp. As soon as I pulled up the smell got the taste buds going and in short the taco was incredible and the best I've had to this point. There are similar places here in the Chicago area that make a similar taco, but the price is double what El Regio cost and the taste was far superior at El Regio. The taco (I got the carne al carbon) was very simple, but the taste great. The sauce and grill jalapeno on the side were perfect side kicks for the taco. Wish I had more time as I have a feeling the pollo taco is as good (maybe better) than the carne taco I got. I will be craving this stuff many a nights and look forward to trying again when I'm back in Austin. read more

No no no. Never again will I come here. 1. The prices.... not sure where it makes sense to charge $7 for ONE taco.... seriously? I gave it the benefit of the doubt with all these "great" reviews and all thinking it was going to be AMAZING. 2. Greasy! If you like the one $7 taco with a side a grease and not even beans or anything, this is your jam. I promise. 3. Hair... I wasn't expecting this one but yep, two little pieces of hair were stuck on my tortilla. I could've done 4 or more but honestly the hair got me. At that point we were to far to even go back. I go to the food truck off of 183 in DelValle. It's always so amazing and such a great price. I love getting the half chicken and I swear my husband says I eat like a Neanderthal when we get food from here. I lose all control and just inhale. This is so authentic and delicious, it reminds me of Super Pollo from Ojinaga, Mex. the chicken meal is $10 and it comes with rice, beans, tortillas, limes, sautéed onions, and an amazing green chili sauce. While I'm also a fan of the chicken served by their competition across the street, I've got to give El Pollo Regio higher marks based on their chicken seeming to have more char-grilled flavor. It also seems to be a bit moister based on the times I've picked up family meals from both places. The rest of the family meal components seem relatively equal, though El Regio was more generous with the amount of corn tortillas included. You can't go wrong either way, but you can go slightly more right with Regio. read more

OK, this is an honest review about El Pollo Regio, and the food is amazing here, I would give the food five stars, unfortunately, the atmosphere is one star. But you don't come here for the atmosphere, do you? This is the perfect place to get the most amazing chicken, and the only place where I actually have to devour the meat right down to the bone, leaving nothing behind but just a few chewed on bones. Definitely, order the full chicken, or the half chicken. It comes with a large pile of tortillas, several salsas, a great big delicious barbecued onion the size of a softball, A whole bunch of napkins, because you're going to want to gobble this up with your hands. Oh, and it also includes a delicious serving for a bunch of people of rice, and beans. I never get the beans, because I don't enjoy those, but if you want to get a substitute of another rice for the beans they are happy to oblige. One star for the parking situation, it is a huge mess. Five stars for the amazing food, I just don't know where else to find chicken this good in Austin. Four stars for the adorable staff that work there. We were so glad to get an El Regio in North Austin. We were big fans since the original Riverside location opened. Even braved the really poor location of the Middle Fiskville location for pollo. The El Regio closest to me (Stassney and S. First) is renaming, but currently still has the same old Pollo Enterro on the menu. It really is to die for. Always ask for extra green sauce - as it's been mentioned, you might want to soak your face in it. Also, bring cash - the location closest to me, at least, is cash only. read more

First of all, I don't state to hate, but for those people who won't try this place out because they don't speak Spanish, try this..POY-YO numero uno. That is the #1 chicken meal in Spanish and you will get the most mouth watering, spicy, finger licking so good you'll slap your momma meal this side of the border! My God! This is soooooo good!! It's extremely difficult to find anyone in Austin that does good grilled chicken so I'm thankful for this place. Yes, there are plenty of great BBQ places around Austin but their chicken is mediocre or worse! The chicken tasted very fresh & tender, extremely spiced - yum!, and came with some delicious grilled caramelized onions and that creamy green sauce is very hot and exquisite!...I might have to go back and get a jar of that green sauce. The hot sauce was good too but not as good as that green sauce. The rice and barracho beans were very good as well. Now that I have a job, this will be a regular stop. For now, the place only has a window that you walk up to and get your order but I see this turning into a full restaurant soon with food this good! read more

NEVER had a bad experience here. I have eaten here at 30+ times. The chicken is spicy and tender, the cooked companion cooked/grilled? onion is soft and mild and perfect with the chicken and the green salsa. That green creamy salsa! I keep it in the refrigerato and eat it with my food for as long as I can! The rice is simple and yet wonderful. Simple delicious food that one can take home and enjoy with friends and family. How great can chicken be? As it turns out, fantastic! This place is cheap (order the whole chicken, it comes with rice, beans, tortillas, salsa, and a whole onion), fast, and uniquely delicious. The chicken has this great charcoal grilled flavor. I often eat the chicken as tacos or just repurpose the meat to add onto a salad or something else made at home. It goes great with almost anything. Couple of weeks ago we tried El Regio again. Here is what we ordered/thought: Chicken Taco - the chicken tasted good and the taco was HUGE, but the meat was sort of dry. The tortilla was really greasy, so I just ended up eating just the meat with yummy guac and sour cream. Hamburger - torta-ish- my husband ordered this and he couldn't finish it. It was made of burger meat, ham, cheese (?), guac and veggies. He did not like how overloaded it was. The fries that accompanied the burger were great! Chicken Quesadilla - greasy, but yummy! The fresh chicken makes all the difference. Still giving it four stars based on the yummy chicken from my previous review, and the lovely quesadilla. I will also probably give the chicken taco another chance. read more

Yes, i'm giving a 4 star because its a little ghetto and they forgot my tortillas. They deserve 5 stars because of the amazing chicken, but I can't overlook the fact that I think I saw a drug deal go down and I had no tortillas to wrap my delicious chicken with. The beans...omg... I'm not really into that style of bean, but they make some of the best ranchero (I think they were) beans and super awesome sauces. I'm not easily impressed by chicken, but that is some damn good rack bird. Juicy, tender, perfectly spiced, even the white meat was moist and tender. The beans were some of the best i've had, with a variety of onion, peppers, bacon, etc. The rice and corn tortillas were just fine, the grilled onion was awesome, and the green sauce was even more awesome, as in the best I've tasted. Was my first time here, tried it based on yelp reviews, and will be back. The half chicken number 13 is a good starter pack, easily enough for two people wanting a light lunch. read more
