Ate here after a GritCycle class and I'm very happy with it. It was my first time eating here but I'm a huge fan of poke. The bowl size is honestly pretty big. I got a medium which is three scoops. You get to choose your base and I always go with the brown rice. They have a good variety of fish and I went with salmon and tuna. The toppings are the best part in a bowl and I like that you aren't limited and can choose any of them (except avocado, I did pay extra for it). They also had a lot of sauces and I asked what the worker recommends and she said a lot of customers get the spicy mayo and house sauce so I went with that. A giant green fly was in the food bar visible to the staff serving me he didn't swat it away and it landed on the protein I looked at him he looked at me the fly looked at us. I wanted to stop by Temakira at the LBX Hangar, but Temakira had closed before I could get my hands on their sushi. However, a former co-worker of mine once told me that when one door closes, another one opens, and I can certainly attest to that! I can't remember when exactly Temakira closed, but I remember seeing that a Poke2 Grill was taking over that spot at the corner of the Hangar. That was about 3 months ago. Every time I stopped by the Hangar since then, their door was always closed, and I couldn't tell when it would open. Then, on a Monday in October, I took a walk inside the Hangar while waiting for my pickup order somewhere else. The door to Poke2 Grill was finally open, and I had to stop by to see what they were offering. While I was taking a look at the menu, Sarah, who I believe is their manager, greeted me and was happy to answer my questions about the restaurant. What does Poke2 Grill serve? Where is their other location? When did they open? Actually, they had their soft opening a couple days before, and I completely missed it! They had given out free bowls of poke to their first 500 customers over the weekend as part of their soft opening. I had never eaten poke before in my life, so I definitely missed out on that opportunity! Sarah explained the concept of a BYOB poke bowl to me. First, you pick a bowl size. Then, you select no more than two bases from white rice, brown rice, nacho chips, and salad mix. Next, you choose your toppings where you could get one scoop of as many toppings as you want as long as you don't select a small size where you're limited to just 4 toppings. Then, you select your proteins. Finally, you add your flavors to complete your poke bowl! During their first week, they were only serving the BYOB poke bowls, which is only a part of their menu. Their full menu includes menu items from the grill, but they weren't ready for that yet. I was curious what other menu items they would serve, and Sarah gave me a laminated menu from the Downey location. Sometime in early to mid November is when they expect to start serving salads, wraps, tacos, sides, and kids meals. Unfortunately, my first poke bowl would have to wait another day since, like I said, I had to pick up an order somewhere else. Before I left, Sarah asked me my name, and that's when I learned her name. I don't remember the last time a restaurant worker asked me my name when I wasn't intending to order, so I thought that was pretty cool! Two days later, I was debating to myself what to get for lunch. I was thinking about going somewhere I had already been to before, but suddenly decided to step out of my comfort zone and order my very first poke bowl! When I arrived at Poke2 Grill, they were serving one customer, but there was no line otherwise. Sarah greeted me and remembered my name! However, it was Aren who prepared my bowl while Sarah was helping the other customer. I chose a medium bowl with a base of nacho chips and salad mix. I'm the type of customer that piles on as many toppings as I can, so that's what I did. I chose all the toppings except avocado, which costs extra. With a medium bowl, you can choose 3 proteins. Which ones did I choose? Spicy tuna, crab meat, and salmon. The other choices are tuna, albacore, shrimp, octopus, and tofu. For the flavors, I had a hard time deciding because I didn't know how spicy the sauces were. I asked about spicy mayo, and Aren said it wasn't that spicy, so that's what I chose. To my surprise, he said I could pick another sauce. I wasn't sure if picking another sauce on top of spicy mayo was a good idea, but he said he could put it on the side. I chose the Yuzu Ponzu as my second sauce. At the register, I signed up for their rewards program, but wasn't sure if my first purchase would count. Sarah said she'd make sure I'd get credit for that purchase. I told her that I never had poke before, and she did what she could to make my first poke experience one to remember. And it certainly was! For the right reasons! All the toppings in my bowl tasted fresh and delicious! I enjoyed it so much that I had forgotten about the ponzu sauce until I was over halfway done with the bowl. When I was done, there was plenty of liquid at the bottom of the bowl. Whoops! I guess that rookie mistake should give you an idea of how enjoyable the food was! I am definitely planning to make a return visit to try something from the grill! As a matter of fact, I'm still trying to decide what to get on my next visit. For now, I will happily recommend Poke2 Grill to others!
