Was not thrilled when daughter said we were meeting here for dinner. Not a huge fan of bbq other than what my family smokes. Was I ever wrong. Easy to order, great bbq and sides. When it comes to BBQ in the Austin area my top selections are as followed #1 Salt Lick #2 SouthSide Market #3 Rudy's...The brisket here didn't seem to have that deep down smoked taste to it, so it was lacking that stand out flavor. This is difficult because there are parts of the meal that were fantastic and some there were just not there. So I'm gonna break down our feedback the best we can. Meat & Sauce: Sauce - 1.5 out of 5 - It's just odd, not sure what they are going for... vinegar and tomato? It's like North Carolina and Texas had an alien baby. Needs some re-thinking... Try making 3 originals for everyone. Brisket - 3 out of 5 - without sauce, it's just dry. The smoke is there... but just Clark Griswold choke on a bone dry. (also you know how I feel about the sauce already) Pork - 3.5 out of 5 - Good flavor, but still dry... needs a different sauce than that odd Vinegar hybrid. I recommend a thick red sauce or mustard-based bbq sauce like South Carolina. If you don't like mustard base check out Meat Churches sauces. I'm sure they can recommend something fantastic. Not Edible: Cole Slaw - 0 out of 5 - reminds me of elementary school. Plain horrible. Greenbean Casserole - 0 out of 5 - reminds me of BBQs with a drunk friend that brought that 1 dish they destroyed from a family member... Plain horrible. FANTASTIC!!: Potato Salad - 5 out of 5 - hands down some of the best potato salad I've ever had!! This stuff is on point! Grab a tub or bucket of this stuff because it's fantastic!!! Every time I go back to Austin, I have to stop by Pok-e-Jo's. The staff is very friendly, and the food is really good. My go-to meat choices are the turkey and the sausage, but the ribs are very good too. I really like the fried okra and the baked potato casserole. It's back this year! Their brisket chili is to die for. I love their smoked turkey also, but once a year during the month of February, they make a really awesome chili. Some chili I have eaten recently seemed to have too much chili powder. The Poke-e-Jo's chili was milder and the smokey taste of the brisket was not overwhelmed with heat or spice. You can buy their chili several different ways but the way I like it is on top of a bed of Fritos covered with melted cheddar cheese and chopped onions. Wedding Catering We were so pleased with the service and quality we received with Pok-e-jos catering. We used their services for our wedding on June 23. We ordered some appetizers for the happy hour before the dinner service and a 3 meat BBQ package for the dinner service. All of the food was delicious. We received several compliments from our guests. The staff was extremely kind and professional. They were also accommodating. I needed a few plates to be packaged for some guests that could only stay for the ceremony and not stay for the dinner service. I wanted those guests to be able to leave with some food from our wedding. The staff was able to box up a few plates for these guests. It was a small thing, but we really appreciated this extra effort that the staff went through. One other thing I need to mention is that we felt very safe with the service they provided. The staff all wore masks and gloves and they plated the food in a way that made us feel comfortable given today's conditions. We worked with Anna to set up catering. She helped to walk us through the process of selecting the meal options and the contract. She was extremely helpful and a pleasure to work with. And in the end, one of the main reasons we loved working with Pok-E-Jos is that they were almost invisible. They were so professional and did all of the setup and tear down of the services that they provided that we hardly even noticed them there. I've been a loyal customer for years and I visit this store at least once a week. I noticed that the last two visits I've been paying additional fees for paying with a credit card. Normally business figure the cost of the processing fees into the menu pricing ! They increased their menu pricing and passed the fees to the customers. Maybe we caught them on an off night? J and I are in the area for work so...commence eating adventures: Austin edition, night one. We were starving. Starving. And this was a let down. First, staff was super nice- no complaints there at all. We ambled in around 6p on a Friday and we didn't have to wait at the counter at all though a line was building behind us. The dining room was barely a third full. The main complaint- across the board- NOTHING was above lukewarm. Everything- veg to meat to starch was kept at a temperature that probably harbors bacteria. And that is Such. A. Shame. Because flavors weren't bad! I got the plate of the day which was half chicken and man this thing had a beautiful color, was not dry in the slightest, the skin was flabby but spiced but damned if this thing was six hours out on the table temperature. For sides I got the mac and cheese, which despite being a strange runny texture, was actually really cheesy and flavorful. No complaints. Other than tepid. The green bean casserole thing needs to be thrown away and they need to start over, in concept and execution. I would have been happier dipping a raw green bean in my BBQ sauce. J got pulled pork and ribs, both were very near to cold but "not bad" on the flavor. We've had better barbecue meat. Tell ya what I did like- the jalapeno cornbread casserole. IT WAS SPICY. I thought sissy-lips was just being whiny but nope it had some kick so I traded my texas toast for the remainder of his casserole. Worth it. We're new to Austin (and Texas BBQ). I happen to be around the corner getting my toddlers hair cut when we stopped in for a quick bite to eat. I was a little overwhelmed by the menu choices but the staff was so nice and patient answering my questions. They even turned the train on for my son's entertainment. I got the chopped brisket sandwich with a side of beans and coleslaw and my son got the smoked turkey with a side of Mac and cheese. We also split the banana pudding. My almost 2 year old ate every morsel of his lunch and about 1/2 of mine plus his weight in pickles. Pickles might be his fav part about Texas BBQ. While we were eating, the manager (perhaps owner?) stopped by our table to welcome us to Austin and asked where we were from. I'm not sure who is making all the four and five star reviews for this restaurant. Unless they are all visiting as some state and never have had good BBQ before. In a city with some outstanding Texas BBQ this place is an all so ran at best. Maybe that's why there are only a few people in the place anytime I drive by the restaurant. I went with someone who wanted to eat there not by choice. The brisket was completely dry and the ribs were marginal at best. Who I went with and wanted to go here could not finish either his sausage or pork and got up and went to the car before I finished. The corn casserole and potato salad were tasty but the only thing. I ordered a quarter chicken, white meat, which included a breast and wing. You can order it either white meat or dark meat, and the price is very reasonable at $3.99 before taxes. They offer lots of different sides, but I went with just the chicken. It tasted good, and the barbecue sauce is also really good. They also include buttered toast with your meal, and you can request whole wheat bread toast. The staff is very friendly and bend over backwards and work really hard to please their customers. All of the employees seem to enjoy their jobs, which was displayed by their very positive attitudes. They also have a condiment bar with barbecue sauce (original and spicy) pickles, jalapenos, onions, lemons, crackers, salsa, salad dressing and a few more things - it is quite extensive. The staff was friendly when I placed my order. I ordered the 2 meat plate with brisket and turkey. They have a wide variety of sides, but since this is my first time here I decided to stick to the basics ( potato salad & pinto beans) The one thing I liked about this place was the portion sizes of the sides! Unfortunately the food was awfully bland! The turkey and brisket had no flavor to it and the same can be said of the potato salad and pinto beans! I was excited to try this place out, but was let down by the taste of the food. It's almost like it was not seasoned at all. Maybe I went on a day where the prep cook forgot to season the food! Also the bar with the pickles and onions had nets flying around it which was interesting as the place was pretty clean. I am fairly new to Texas, but since arriving I have tried a few different BBQ places and I keep going back here! Other places for me may have great sides, but their meat falls flat or their meat isn't that great and the sides are gross. Pok-e-Jo's however has delicious meat and great sides! The jalapeno sausage is amazing and definitely has a bite to it. I really enjoy the turkey and the brisket! I always get the mac n cheese. I wouldn't say it's the best I've ever had but it is very tasty and I love it. They have two choices on sauce, original or spicy. I suggest getting the spicy, it does add a kick to your food. The puddings are very delicious.. the banana one is very dangerous! Once you have one bite you want more! My boyfriend loves the Jalapeno Corn Bread Casserole. Came here for lunch with my co-worker who was looking for some BBQ. I ordered the 2 meat plate with beef sausage and pork ribs, broccoli salad as a side with a drink (homemade lemonade). The pork ribs were YUMMY. I would definitely get those again. The beef sausage was ok. I think it was the consistency that bothered me. They were not as dense as I am more used to.
