I decided to check this place out and got here at the height of lunch rush-hour on a Thursday and found myself to be the first person in line. As a matter of fact, there were only three of us customers. As many yelpers have already pointed out this place is like stepping back into the late 70s with faded photos and13 deer head trophies on the walls. This is definitely a no-frills "kinda grungy" restaurant with no music playing overhead. They also pay no attention to social media since there are no owner responses for the last 16 years. I got their Thursday lunch special, which was a three meat plate and two sides. The only two sides they had were beans and potato salad which were pretty mediocre. Only bbq place I've ever been to that offers just 2 sides. They had no baby back ribs just St. Louis style and they only give you one rib. They do offer pickles and onions, however, there is no barbecue sauce available unless you get it at the counter when they're preparing your plate. The sausage was fairly lean and decent and the brisket was....just OK and the smoke ring was barely discernible. The star of the show was the pork rib which I would rank way up there. It was so good I got some ribs to go. I should mention, they do not sell any alcoholic beverages. The soft drinks that they do serve come from out of old dated equipment and old plastic tubs. I would stick with just getting the meat to go and avoid everything else. For the money, this place is not too overpriced and you pretty much get what you pay for and you won't have to stand in line for an hour to get it. Limited sides *, drinks **, brisket ***, ribs ****, sausage ***1/2, ambience**, overall ***1/2 Open 11-6 M-Sat.

When you walk in, you feel like you're walking back a few decades! The place is nostalgic to say the least. I imagine when the gates of heaven are opened, it will be as though you're opening the door to walk into Bert's! lol

Been enjoying T-Man's since middle school. They were out of big red, and need to turn the AC on! Other than that, awesome as always!

My favorite BBQ in Austin. Frito pie is my go to, but everything is great, including the staff.

I am so confused how people considers this to be good bbq. Went in for lunch. Got the turkey platter and Cole slaw as my 2 sides. I took two bites of turkey and dumped plate in trash. The turkey looked like a prison thanksgiving dinner. The cole slaw was bland. The fridge it was kept in was very dirty and old. The potato salad was sitting out and left in the same bucket they probably purchased it in. The bbq sauce was the most watery bbq sauce I've ever seen. The guy poured the sauce over my turkey and it was like the sauce was trying to run in the opposite direction. I mean, the sauce spread over the turkey like Moses spreading the Red Sea. It turned into a stream of bbq water rather than stick to the damn turkey. One of the worst bbq places I've ever been to in my life let alone in Texas. Absolutely the worst. And this was $10.77 and didn't include a drink. It tasted worst than it looked. Would give 0 star if I could. How in the &$?@ is this place in business????

I was debating I should give 3 stars or 4 stars. It's a really small BBQ restaurant. The menu is pretty simple too. Totally 4 staffs there including one cashier. I ordered one combo sandwich and one beef sandwich. They served my food very quickly, quicker than a fast food place. Good for lunch. One problem is he forgot to put sauce on the meat. So I went back for the sauce. And he was embarrassed. Another older guy (maybe the owner) gave him a look. I didn't feel bad about it at all. I think not many people ordered sandwich here. I don't know if I was hungry, I finished both sandwiches on the way quickly. I thought I could gave one to my coworker. Both of them taste good. Maybe only Texans know how to make BBQ. I wanted to give 4 stars because I want to support a small store with nice people.

[From their website] "Cooper's Old Time Pit Bar-B-Que is honored to be the 'Best Of The Best' in the barbecue business and home of the original World Famous "Big Chop." now you can get a taste of Texas Hill Country BBQ that restaurant reviewers have raved about!" The inside seating is grab your own picnic tables or share with others. They have a huge outside dining area with additional seating. Also, they have a bar area to sit at. Order your meats by the pound, get sides, dessert, etc and pay at the end of the line. They do have other merchandise for sale like beef jerky, bbq sauce, etc. Two separate multi-user men and women's restrooms. Complimentary stewed beans, bbq sauce, jalapeño, pickles, onions, and bread. For dinner, I ordered the... Beef Rib - really tender, yet firm enough to stay on the bone. A good beefy bbq flavor and smokiness. Brisket - The brisket was tender, smokey, melt in your mouth delicious! The fat cap was was so good. LOL. I liked the Brisket a lot better than the Beef Rib. Mac-N-Cheese (bacon & jalapeño topping) - the noodles were cooked well and the cheese was cream and perfectly coated each noodle. The crisp bacon & jalapeño topping was free and no extra charge, really boasted this side. Banana Pudding - a classic southern dessert done well. Sweet Tea - We're in Texas, nothing beats the heat better than cold Sweet Tea. Others in my group who ordered said that the Roast Chicken was good. Unfortunately, the smoked Turkey was dry. The restaurant has a classic look (wood, brick, and ducts), and the menu - meats priced by the pound on a chalkboard - adds to the retro appeal. Those meats are cut to order by a pitmaster. After making your selection, you proceed down a cafeteria-style line and pick your sides. Sauce, pickles, and Wonder Bread are free. We opted for some brisket, a jalapeno sausage link, potato salad, and creamed corn. The brisket was tender and flavorful if a bit fatty while the sausage boasted a firm bite and a winning combination of spicy and cheesy. Unexpectedly, the creamed corn ended up being a highlight. If that's a side you usually avoid, Cooper's version may end up converting you. That said, the potato salad was nothing special and the sauce was very tomato-and-vinegar-forward. As to be expected given Cooper's location and reputation, prices are also quite high (as in almost $40 a pound for brisket). That's not outrageous for a "name" BBQ place in Austin though if I had to pay that after waiting in a long line, I might walk away disappointed. Cooper's is not the best Texas BBQ you're likely to find, but it's a pretty damn solid representation thereof.

Noodle Brussels had great flavor however due to the inconsistency in size they were cooked to different softness. I preferred the smaller ones as they weren't crunchy when chewing. We were planning to try one of each taco but they had already run out of the pulled pork. They wrapped each taco individually in aluminum foil to keep it warm which was a nice touch, though they didn't bring out the red and green sauces until we asked for them. Brisket Taco ($9): The brisket was a bit dry but the slice was pretty thick and it paired well with the acidity of the pickles. Carne G Taco ($6): Super cheesy and heavy. The flavors weren't bad but I felt pretty gross after eating one and it left me really bloated.

This spot was close to my hotel, and on my departure day, I decided to have one last hit of Q. It's a big restaurant, and it appears to also be quite the music venue. When I went, a little on the early side for a Friday dinner, there was not a wait and I was sat immediately. My server was attentive, and got me in, fed, and back out in plenty of time to catch my already delayed flight. I ordered their 3 meat combo plate, which also came with two sides, and added on a piece of cornbread. I chose brisket of course, as well as turkey and sausage. The server recommended the serrano pepper spinach (like a creamed spinach) and onion rings, and I took those recs. The best of the three meats was the turkey. Not a good sign. It was moist and tender, though not particularly smokey. Even so, I enjoyed it more than the brisket and sausage, which I would have guessed the reverse when ordering. The brisket was on the dry side and kind of bland, it did not smack of being freshly carved. The Stubbs BBQ sauce helped me eat some of it... now I see why they are famous for their sauce. I had a couple bites of the sausage and pushed it aside, I didn't enjoy their recipe on that at all. It was cooked seemingly well, but the blend of spices and meat they use wasn't pleasant to me. The sides, the onion rings were very crispy which I like, but again... something in the batter. Maybe even the oil they were cooked in, I did not enjoy as much. The spinach was actually quite enjoyable, maybe even a little rich. I think if it were warmer, if might help milden out some of that. It was really thick. The cornbread wasn't worth the add-on. No sweetness or anything to make it memorable. Vessel for butter. The portion was massive, and I had leftover food, but did not take it... and that would have been the case even if I wasn't headed to the airport. I wouldn't recommend this spot.

When I tell you these ribs were a religious experience I am not embellishing. Full disclosure: I do not currently live in the south so I don't consider myself a BBQ connoisseur, but I did spend 4 years in the south and have sampled many BBQ joints in the meantime. Take this review as someone who really enjoys BBQ (and any slow cooked meat for that matter) but who could not list more than 10 BBQ restaurants they have eaten at in the last 5 years. So the beef ribs. Great texture, tender meat but still had a bite to it. Expertly seasoned so they were not wet with sauce but still moist. I would consider 1 beef rib a snack, 2 a small meal. I also tried the chopped brisket (brisket and burnt ends sitting in a soup of BBQ sauce). That was also delicious (and more reasonably priced), but I could have done with slightly less sauce. It really was like a soup and while the sauce was tasty, there was too much of it. I went later in the afternoon (around 2/2:30pm) and got their last two beef ribs so going earlier is better. You order at the open kitchen and then pay at the counter when your food is ready. It consisted of three meats, two sides, and a dessert along with pickles, onions, bread, and BBQ sauce. There was also a set of utensils delivered, but plates were forgotten, but not a big deal. Brisket - This was definitely the best item eaten of the day. It was tender and juicy while adding the BBQ sauce giving that extra bite. The BBQ sauce was great regardless, a little bit of sweet and smoky flavor going on. Pulled Pork - This was another solid meat choice. I did not think it was as tender as the brisket, but it was still enjoyable especially with that BBQ sauce, which was key throughout the meal. Sausage - This was not bad. The snap on this threw me off a little, but it was not too bad. They were large links and had plenty of flavor. Gouda Mac & Cheese with Smoked Bacon - This was actually penne pasta with little pieces of the bacon. I actually preferred this pasta choice here. It really soaked up the cheese sauce. The sauce was not too over powerful and was just right. Beans with Smoked Bacon - These were not too bad. I thought they were a little liquidity, but the added bacon pieces definitely helped. Banana Pudding - This came in individual cups, which was nice. The pudding was thick with a little meringue or whipped cream present and a few wafer cookies on top. It was a satisfying ending to a very good meal. Will I go back? Yes.
