The service was friendly and helpful while the food came out promptly. I had the pastrami sandwich, which was a special on the day I attended. It came with pesto aioli, arugula, gruyere cheese, avocado, and pickled jalapenos. I also had a side salad, which appeared fresh and was appetizing. I liked the dressing too (appeared to be some type of vinegar). The sandwich was nicely done. The pastrami was thin and flavorful with an appropriate amount given. The filling to bread ratio was also ideal. I really enjoyed the avocado addition. I was not sure how the avocado would be with the rest of the ingredients, but I liked the creaminess. Loved it! The ambiance is so warm & inviting with dark woods & several brick fireplaces! We started out with cocktails in the Tavern (bar) section & they were made perfectly! Bartender gave my husband two tastes of red wine so that he could pick out what he wanted w/dinner. The bar is stocked with a lot of good items! We had a reservation. Upon arrival there was no parking. We were told to park across a pitch dark street in the office building lot that was also full.When we arrived the hostess was barely polite. We arrived 15 minutes early and were told our table wouldn't be ready until our reservation time. We were directed to the bar and told we could bring our drinks to the lobby. The bar was 2 deep shoulder to shoulder, with no service people in sight. When we were finally seated in the upstairs dining room we saw a room half empty. We did not see more than 4 people, in total, leave all the dining rooms while we waited in the lobby area. After being seated we waited almost 5 minutes to be greeted, given menus, and asked if we wanted water or drinks. Our drinks took over 15 minutes. Our orders were for salad dishes and a cold main course. Service was so slow. Waited almost 15 minutes for service between courses. They got a salad order wrong and when the corrected order came it was again wrong, three ingredients and one was missing. Near the end of our dinner wait staff began putting tables together right behind us, even when there was half a room vacant. A party of 6 right behind us. While the room was quiet before this party was seated the noise level naturally increased. They actually were waited on and had hot food served faster than our salad orders. We were disappointed to say the least. Limited menu, slow service, poor wine by the glass selection, just not worth the experience. Almost any diner is a better experience. read more

It was our 50th First Date Anniversary. We were well greeted. Our table was a corner table near the fireplace. Music was playing and it was pleasant. The sommelier was helpful. I wanted champagne but their menu is very large. The sommelier's suggestion was perfect. The waiter service was attentive and professional. The menu is not too large and the list is very interesting. Our meals were very good. Our only negative was the condition of our table. The table was tacky to the touch. It felt as if a layer of adhesive was on the service. I must admit we frequent restaurants mostly in New York City. All have white table cloths. We are not sure if we will return to Pluckenim Inn. We prefer white table cloth. Perhaps on a short notice on a return trip from the city we may stop. But for now we donot plan to visit. read more

Went here for an office get-together / happy hour, we used the bar area and requested to get seated . Internal ambiance was awesome, nice collection of drinks, I see reserved board on most of the tables and they seem to have wide range of wine tasting options. Good menu had a nice variety of appetizers and entrees. However, not great options for Vegetarians, but they were able to make a veggie pasta. We really looked forward to eating at Pluckemin Inn. We are big fans of Balthazar Bakery and love all of their French breads and baked goods. We noticed immediately the bread basket appeared to be stale and not fresh. For our 1st course, we shared the Gnocchetti which was small gnocchi, charred octopus and mushrooms. Very different and tasty. For our main dishes we chose Columbia River Sturgeon and Swordfish. Both dishes were excellently prepared and well balanced. Only problem here was the very long wait ( over 1/2 hour +) for our main course after our appetizer. Finally we ordered black coffee and their Plunky cherry themed vanilla cake. A huge disappointment and to top that, my wife found a couple of what appeared to be nylon bristles in her cake and cherry filing. When the head waitress asked if everything was okay, my wife pointed it out to her. She looked confused, tried to 'brush it off' as an herb stem (no pun intended). She just walked away, nothing and I mean nothing. At the end of the day, they hit 3 out of 5 marks but the 2 misses are big ones. Not respecting your dining customers is an unforgivable mistake. The Inn is quaibt. Has an outdoor seating atea, a beautiful bar inside, and a romantic seating atea indoors. As we walked in. We were greeted at the reception atea and taken to our table. Our water glasses were filled soon after, and bread was brought to the table. We ordered drinks to begin. I ordered the Plucky. It was so good I ordered a second one. The other drink ordered was Peach on the Boulevard. That was very good too. We wanted to try a few first dishes. We ordered the gnocchi, the yellowtail tuna, tomato salad, shishito peppers, and octopus. We loved all of them. Great flavor and beautiful presentation. For our main dish, we ordered the swordfish, sirloin steak, salmon, and wild mushroom vegetarian dish with a side of French fries. The half portions are on the small side. We were full from the first dishes, so the half portions were perfect. For dessert, we ordered the strawberry shortcake and the apple turnover. The shortcake was light and delicious with a scoop of strawberry Gelato. The apple turnover was just perfect. The right amount of apple to dough. Service was a bit slower than we are accustomed to. Met here for a business lunch on the recommendation of some clients... Oh my gosh... so cute and quaint... the ambiance is like a wine cellar.. the walls and doors look like oak barrels.... We were able to sit by the fireplace and enjoy some really nice conversation...and what a treat to enjoy the holiday decorations!!! The food was stellar! They had specials for lunch, it was so delicious! I enjoyed a delicious pizza.. had plenty to take home..I only wish I could have had a glass of wine to compliment my lunch (maybe next time!) Went to a Mushroom dinner and wine pairing dinner. Fantastic, one of the best we've been to. Mushroom dishes were beyond good , sommelier is outstanding. Only complaint was that my desert looked like it had fallen on the floor and scooped back up onto the plate. Everyone rises was in a crust like shell. Mine was a mound if goo that they put the mascarpone on. Pluckemin and pastry chef should be ashamed of themselves for that. Not up to standard and insulting especially for the price of the dinner. I'm being generous with the 3 stars... I'd actually give it 2.5 if I could do half-stars on Yelp. We came to this place with high expectations as it had been recommended to us by a few of our friends and some locals. The atmosphere itself is welcoming and the wait staff are nice. The food, however... 1. The burger. The meat was unseasoned and the quality was mediocre at best. It was served on a cold, stale bun. The fries were a bit soggy and unseasoned. 2. The octopus. The flavors were great, but for $25 we got what looked like was maybe a small tentacle cut into 4 pieces. 3. The swordfish. When it showed up we thought we had ordered the half portion by mistake. The server sheepishly told us that no, that was in fact the full serving ($42). It came with 3 pieces of asparagus and 3 croutons. The fish lacked flavor. 4. The Brussels sprouts. The flavor was great, but the portion basically fit on one of those side plates you would use for bread. 5. The drinks. At NYC pricing, it should be much better quality. The old fashioned ($17) was served with the cheap red cherries and small ice cubes. We skipped dessert for obvious reasons. Is the cost of materials really so high that customers should leave hungry? We will not be returning, nor will we ever recommend this place. There are SO many better options at this (and lower) price points. Throw a dart and you'll hit a better option. read more

The Pluckemin Inn made one of our first night's out since COVID ultra special. From the moment you walked in (everyone in gloves/masks, tables socially distant and time-slot seatings) to when you left (we even left with two extra wine bottles from their distribution center next door!), it was a wonderful experience. While they have over 40,000 bottles of wine in stock, we struggled to find something on their list that we'd like. Thankfully they have a sommelier on staff who was able to share some additional options that weren't on the menu (and who didn't try and sell you the most expensive bottle). As for the food, it was AMAZING. Side note - I requested a hot water with lemon at the beginning. As I was taking my last sip, they were coming out with a new one. As our wine glasses got a little too low, they immediately came over to pour. Their attentiveness (for what you're paying) was much appreciated and well executed. Ok, now the food. We had the gnocchetti sardi (little gnocchi with pheasant ragu, pecorino, and truffle) which was TO DIE FOR. I would have had this as my entree alone. A must get. As another appetizer we had the foie gras. Having foie gras the night before at a different restaurant, THIS was the way and quality it should be consumed. Entrees were the suckling pig (not the whole thing, but a sizable piece) and the special cod (I know, cod right?) which came in an amazing seafood broth with calamari, clams, and artichokes. Both were incredible in their individual flavors. To finish, we had the apple crostata (could have had more apple than crust, but a wonderful flavor) and the dark chocolate bavarois (think the consistency between mousse and fudge covered in a chocolate shell). This is a great place for a date or a business meeting as it is a more high class place. I just wish they had a little bit more variety in options for people with different diets but everything was very good. With the advent of Sean Price, a very knowledgeable and sophisticated sommelier, I was very much looking forward to a German wine dinner.  Sean and I  both speak German, and I have been writing about, and importing, German wines for nearly 50 years.   We love the Pluckemin Inn, not only for its awesome wine list, but for the food.  We have dined at PI over a period of about 10 years and always try to reserve well in advance.  I was looking forward to the German wine dinner and had a reservation, but suddenly found an  unwelcome voice mail this afternoon.   Juan Carlos, the manager, told me he had cancelled  my reservation for the dinner, and on top of that, informed me that we were no longer welcome at the restaurant!   I am too fond of the Pluckemin Inn to accept this behavior, so I called Juan Carlos back and asked him what happened.  In November we were having dinner next to a lively party that seemed to be having a good time.  I approached their table and thought I would crack a joke or two to keep up with their levity.  I was quite successful, and they replied that my jokes were quite funny.   Juan Carlos wasn't part of the conversation, but later he declared that I had no business going to their table and making a nuisance of myself.   I didn't see it that way, and I love making people laugh - not many do nowadays.  When leaving, he threatened to banish me from the restaurant, which naturally I didn't expect to hear.  I told him that was extreme, based on how I was received at the adjacent table, but that of course I wasn't interested in being banned from the restaurant for what I consider an  attempt to share with the  levity and reach out to a set of adjacent diners.   We later returned to the Pluckemin Inn for dinner, and while waiting for my wife to park the car. I made another comment.  Juan Carlos immediately threatened me once again with the same punishment.  I tried to explain that my sense of humor was in no  way crude or offensive, and that I certainly didn't mean to be that way. He told me he had cancelled  my reservation for the dinner, and on top of that, informed me that we were no longer welcome at the restaurant.   I offered to apologize, but he would not accept it. and was determined to banish us from the restaurant, based on 2 separate incidents.   I don't consider either of them serious enough to be banned from  the Pluckemin Inn. I am also emailing this message to Brian Hider and, in the hopes he will rescind Juan Carlos' nasty behavior and reinstate us, in good standing, to one of our favorite restaurants in the area.                        regards   Frank E. As a long time customer of their retail internet wine business, I was curious to see what a live visit would yield. This review covers a brief pre-wine dinner bar visit and a 28 person wine pairing event with one of my favorite winemakers, Russell Bevan. The bar, left of the main entry is a cozy room with high ceilings, warm woods, a majestic fireplace and spectacular chandelier- a truly warm and inviting space. At 5pm it's standing room with a wait list for the dozen bar seats, and the 10 or so tables positioned around the periphery of the room. It's got an upbeat vibe and offers the same full menu and wine list as provided in the two main dining areas. Bartenders were fast and friendly - 5 star service. The wine list offers an excellent by the glass selection, as well as a premium Coravin selection, primarily older vintages - great for tasting at 3oz pours (6 oz pours also available). The food menu covers lighter fare and some serious entrees- not much in the way of finger/bar food - a nice break. A few raw bar selections and a tuna tartare are the lightest - and the pizza looked amazing! I dined on a couple of shrimp and two 3oz pours of a 2003 Merus and a 2002 Viader cabernet. The '02 Viader ($20) was in a great spot, showing how good Napa cabs can age! If you desire to bring your own, Corkage is $35, reasonable considering the amount of care given to the wine list. Nit pick - the Coravin served Merus (3oz - $25) was full of sediment, and was truly gritty. It needed straining. I could not finish the last ounce. The bartender tried to cleanup through her strainer but the mesh was not fine enough. The manager who poured the wine (bartenders do not Coravin) was informed and he responded by saying "thats how its showing" - in my opinion not an adequate reaction for fine wine service. No offer of discount for that unsatisfying glass... The dining rooms - to the right snd upstairs offer a slightly more reserved and upscale experience. The main floor dining room is flanked by the see-through wine wall a d is as cozy a d comfortable as can be. Our dinner was in the upstairs dining room, and our 28 filled the room. The staff was great again and the dinner was an absolute blast! The chef, Kevin LaFemina, presented four dishes (see pics) that resonated with Russell's flavorful wines - and a dessert that looked great but was beyond my ability to consume! We met up with a client in the area. In this part of Jersey Inn's are the thing and this one didn't disappoint. It was cozy with a fireplace and I noticed they even had blankets if you needed one. The menu was New York style with vegan options. I had the cauliflower dish which was amazing. My colleagues had salads, that they also very much enjoyed.. I have been to this restaurant quite a few times but never was the service so poor. We consistently had to flag someone down to order a cocktail, more water, another glass of wine, more bread. We were a small party of 3 celebrating a friend's birthday. The restaurant was not full. The waiter never came over to check on us. This was my friend's favorite restaurant until tonight. We passed on ordering an excellent bottle of wine and desserts and coffee because we just wanted to get out of there. We made the best of the evening with each others company but it was a very disappointing experience. Twice my husband and I have gone there just to grab a drink and appetizers at the bar. This past Saturday around 6:00pm we went again, bar was full. We asked the young girl (same girl from few months ago) if we can get a table. Her response "we are completely FULL!" Place was empty inside! I was confused, then asked if we can sit outside? She again told us "we are fully booked!" The outdoor dining was empty!!! This is the second time in few months apart. What The Hell Is Wrong With Management at this restaurant?????? Do they NOT know how to take reservations? Paying customers want to come in and spend money, FIND THEM A TABLE, especially when the place is empty. UGH!!!! read more

This restaurant is over the top! The wine list is extensive and reasonably priced and the food rivals a 3 star Michelin restaurant in New York City. Best part, the price for dinner doesn't set you back a house payment. We were staying in the area to visit family and friends. We're not oenophiles, but we do appreciate a good bottle of wine. And what a bottle it was, WOW! The Sommelier, Sean Sullivan, picked the bottle for us. He brought us a Giacomo Borgogno & Figli Barolo. It paired beautifully with our dinner and it was under $160. We are rarely in New Jersey, but if we are ever in the area again, we are making a reservation to experience another decadent night of food and wine. read more

I have waited more than 24 hours to write this review but I am still feeling the angst. Walked in here at 4:15 Thursday afternoon with a friend who was in visiting from LA. The idea was to have a quick cocktail and enjoy the space. I did not call ahead for a reservation and it was a shot if they were even open. I have had a love of the Plucky for years. Special dinners, happy hours (time frame) at the bar with burgers and my husband. The wine walks and wine events and ordering wine from the wine store because Chris from 56 Degrees is a pro. I wanted to share a gem with my friend so she could appreciate that it's not all happening in downtown LA and there is charm to the rolling hills of New Jersey! I parked and when we walked up to the door- I told her am not sure they are open! Several tables set in the driveway - ever one of them empty. Walked in- not one customer inside. I was expecting them to tell me they didn't open until dinner. I approached the desk and a young girl was annoyed that I wanted to speak to her. She didn't make eye contact- continued looking at what ever was in front of her. I began talking to her and asked if we could grab a drink. Still- no eye contact. She proceeded to tell me they were completely booked. I asked her what time do you open? "We are open now". I was admittedly perplexed. I said "no one is here! What time are the reservations?" She said they had some starting at 5:00. I assured her we could sit at the bar and be quick. Absolute no go on that one. I asked if we could sit at a table and be done before 5:00? Hard no on that one. At this point truly embarrassed that my friend was witnessing this. A waiter came out and asked if there was a problem. I assured him that yes, indeed there was a problem- we would like to sit and have a drink and would be done before 5! His response was that there were no tables available for that. Full disclosure this review is ZERO stars. As a professional in the service industry for years - I would like to note that it is not always what you say- but how you say it. Had the staff members said - I'm so sorry we just don't have anything available OR- we can give you a table but we really need it vacated prior to 5 PM - this would have been a non issue. The young lady behind the stand was actually quite rude and I was quite embarrassed. As we exited the restaurant- my friend noted - and accurately that this was like the scene in Pretty Woman where Julia Roberts walked in to buy a dress and was brow beat by a disrespectful associate . read more
