This just became my favorite Mexican food place. The vibes are so cozy and warm and like home despite how spacious the space is. Everything is bright and colorful even the sink. I don't often expect artwork in the sink. The food was also very good. I got the tropical smoothie. It was just what I needed both refreshing and tasty. Also I didn't need to take my lactase for it which is another plus. The Plato del Mercado was very fulfilling and I even ate the cactus which usually I would avoid due to my dislike of it in general. It was a very balanced plate with veggies and meat. My wife had the quesabirria with consome. She said this was more like a quesadilla with birria than what she expected but nonetheless delicious. Generally speaking, haven't been too impressed with the Mexican restaurants since moving here but ever since the first time I came to Plaza Ortega I've been going pretty religiously once a week. I've tried a torta (pictured), some tacos, and the cemita. The cemita has been the winner for me thus far, think I had it the last three times lol. I'm from california and we pride ourselves with having some of the best mexican food & after moving to new york i've been on the hunt to find something that measure up. Well I found it , this place has incredible food, reminds me of the taquerias back home me and my mom used to go to on sundays. This place is a gem, the inside has an ice cream area with mexican ice cream , there's a little cashier spot that has all kinds of snacks with seating all around . The staff is so nice and you can tell they pride themselves on the food and service, feels like you're at home. We ordered the Enchiladas Suizas & Cemita de Milanesa de pollo. Let me just say we cleaned our plates and didn't even talk because the food was so good haha. We both enjoyed our dishes. The flavors, the quality of the food, and the taste was out of this world. We also took a Cemita to go since it was just so good. Also ended up ordering the fried ice cream and that was the perfect ending to our experience and meal here. I've been 20 years in food industry and I can start by saying that the food was way under my expectations, they really need to work a lot on this, and please take away those chorizo breakfast links for babies out of the molcajete and add real chorizo sausage, make it look better and tasty,the tortillas in the tacos wow horrible , ask for tortillas in the el Milagro or make them, torta really? Just bread, cheese and Milanese? No beans, avocado, chiles in vinagre, horrible. Service was terrible, the owner has to train this 2 ladies waitresses that were there on Sunday evening looks like they don't have any experience as waitresses, honestly for a Sunday night I was very disappointed and didn't see or feel any ambiance. The carnitas and al pastor tacos were very delicious. The salsa verde and Passion fruit drink paired with it was even better. I also ordered the Quesabirria and that was delicious and filling. You can't go wrong with any of the tacos but my favorite are the Carne Asada Taco and Al Pastor Taco. You walk in a you're greeted by kind staff and Paletas in the front case. Love plaza Ortega ! There food is always so delicious! My parents love coming here on the weekend to eat together as a family. Their agua frescas are so yummy I recommend the maracuyá which is passionfruit. You MUST also get a paleta before you leave they have many flavors to choose from and if you just want regular ice cream that as well but their paletas always are so tasty to try out . My favorite is the fresa con crema flavor. Their tortas are super filling and the quesabirria is super filling . So far my favorite plate is the Alambre al pastor that filled me up and was super delicious. My family goal is to try every plate here . The tacos come in a small tortilla but the meat is generous. I was still hungry so I ordered a gordita,that was very tasty. My husband ordered a cemita, he says he would give it an 8. However, for the looks of it, I would say it was a 9 (it had papalo!). My only complaint was the music, it was not too loud but they had some weird electronic music and a video of a concert in a loop. We had been meaning to try the place and I'm glad we did because it was fantastic. I met them when they first opened (during pandemic) and José gladly made my simple breakfast request that wasn't necessarily on the menu. Chorizo, refried beans, scrambled eggs, cheese and avocado! SO GOOD! I was in Heaven! After conversing with them, I realized they were from an area very close to where my family is from. They're my boyfriend's favorite tacos. So, I recently ordered several party platters of them to be delivered to my apartment at an exact time for his birthday party. Not only did they arrive at EXACTLY the time I asked for, they were spectacularly laid out, they came with neatly packed containers of freshly made salsas, chips and guacamole. The two people who delivered them came inside and helped set up. Everyone at the party was in awe of the spread and the tacos vanished in about 10 minutes. Not a single taco remained. You can get a chilaquiles torta (that's chilaquiles with a milanesa de pollo filet in it, specifically) during breakfast hours, which go until noon. It sounds unreal. Guess what? It is. It very much is. I've never had anything like it anywhere else, and if you somehow aren't sold by now, you should be visiting them yesterday.
