I've been coming to this ice cream shop on a weekly basis. [[HIGHLIGHT]]Usually, there's no seating available inside, so I end up eating in the car, walking while I eat, or just taking it home since I live nearby.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] [[HIGHLIGHT]]Today, I was surprised to find some seats available inside, but it's a small shop, so people are always standing around, making it feel cramped.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] [[HIGHLIGHT]]One thing that makes the experience uncomfortable is when I want to try different ice cream flavors. The shop is so small that if there's someone behind me waiting to order, I feel rushed, and it creates a weird, awkward vibe.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] [[HIGHLIGHT]]Today, after getting my ice cream, I sat down with my partner, but there were so many little flies around the shop, which made it really unpleasant.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] I kept having to wave my hands to keep them away while trying to enjoy my ice cream. Because of this, I think I won't be eating my ice cream there again. Maybe it was just because it was closing time, but the number of flies was bothersome. I uploaded photos in case management wants to take a look. If they can control the fly situation, I'll most likely come back and eat inside. If not, I'll just order and leave. I really hope the back of the store doesn't have as many flies as the front.
Van Leeuwen is a classic New York ice cream spot! I'm not the biggest ice cream fan but any time someone is in town, I take them here. The flavors are rich, the options are plentiful, the branding of the place is so cute! Also they let you try many flavors so you can a good decision on what you want (because many of their flavors are unique) For an ice cream spot, they are the one to beat Overall 9/10
Whereas I learned yesterday that there's no actual honey in it, Van Leeuwen's Honeycomb ice cream is up there with the most elite ice cream flavors I've ever tasted. It's like ascending to heaven for a brief moment. Service is great and fast, ambiance is great as well as there is plenty of indoor seating at this location. Brown Sugar Cookie Dough Chunk (also pictured) is more of a middling flavor in my eyes, but this place still gets 5 stars because I frequent it and there are a slew of other amazing flavors besides Honeycomb.
Yelp fam, hear me out.. Häagen-Dazs makes me happy but Van Leeuwen takes the cake. If you're in the mood for unique and delicious flavors, Id definitely recommend you give this place a try. Its expensive for ice-cream but my boyfriend spoils me. They even deliver via doordash! We've tried mint chocolate, honeycomb and earl grey. I cant recommend a flavor because its difficult to pick favorites here.. JUST TRY IT! :)
I'm a ice cream enthusiast, but I usually opt for a classic soft serve with hot fudge. Van Leeuwen has a reputation that precedes itself, so when walking past my sweet tooth drew me to the shop! I had to go in and try this ice cream that I've heard so much about. Before walking in, I saw the sign for their seasonal specials. If you know me, you know I'm a sucker for a special. I wanted to try the Vegan Bourbon Apple Crisp. But since this was my first time here, I also wanted to grab a scoop of classic vanilla. First when I walked in, I noticed a cute shop with wooden tables to the right. There were only three but I walked in at a very quiet time. I wasn't completely sold on my decision (no surprise there) so the person behind the counter asked if I wanted a sample! I haven't asked if I wanted a sample since before COVID so this was a nice surprise. After tasting the vegan bourbon apple crisp, I was sold. I was able to enjoy my two scoops in-house after showing my vaccination card. It was nice to savor this sweet treat in peace and quiet. The scoops were a nice size for the price, but this ice cream is definitely on the pricier side. I would say it's worth it, especially if you're looking for vegan options. I look forward to more of their seasonal flavors.
Stopped into this location of Van Leeuwen on a hot summer day. Not my first time trying them, but it was my first time getting the vegan ice cream. They had indoor seating when we were there, and service was friendly. We got the cookie crumble strawberry jam (cashew-based), and it was absolutely delicious. My only issue was the potential for cross-contact (to be fair, they do have a posted warning on the wall). All the ice cream scoops seemed to be stored together in the same place between uses, so just keep that in mind if you have allergies or dietary restrictions. They didn't have any issues with washing the scoop when I asked (for allergy reasons), but who knows what any of the previous scoops touched that day. I wish each flavor could just have its own scoop to lower the risk. As much as I like ordering freshly scooped ice cream, I may stick to the pints in the future (which they do sell in-store).
The only place I tasted uncommon ice cream flavors was when hubs and I visited my daughter in Portland, OR and salivated over Salt & Straw's outlandish ingredients. But here, Van Leeuwen is just as tasty. This Brooklyn location in Greenpoint is tight. Narrow tight. Almost walking sideways tight. My daughter had scoped their online menu and was a win-win for all of us. She loved "The Vegan" with 2 Vegan Scoops+ Vegan Whip Cream+Vegan toppings. Hubs had a rich 'Chocolate' ice cream and I enjoyed both my regular ice cream and Vegan scoops. In true Leeuwen style, everything we ordered was heavenly. These folks have earned their reputation focusing on real ingredients. In other words, when I had my Vegan Churros & Fudge, there were real churro pieces. I'm not sure if flavors are constantly changing or available year-round- all I know is, Van Leeuwen has a nice balance of yum!
I've had Van Leeuwenhoek ice cream before. I'm definitely a fan. This time we tried an absolutely delicious flavor. It's seasonal. So run and try it. Coconut Coquito Rum. Out of this world. Tasty, creamy just indescribably Delicious. Get it before the seasons over. I give it 10 stars.
Very filling ice cream. They have the classic with dairy milk, and the vegan with coconut milk options. We came here after my early birthday dinner and we got the strawberry ice cream and the earl grey ice cream under their classic menu. It was perfect for a nice hot day even tho I felt they were a bit heavy. Definitely opting for the vegan next time!
I have been to this location numerous times over the years. Ice cream always cheers me up rain or shine. This time not so much. I ordered the special Blueberry Shortcake and Brown Sugar Cookie Dough, waffle cone. It was $10.72 The staff took a long time to figure out the flavor at the back. Okay. Gave it to me. It was really tiny. I though. Oh ....? That's my $11 ice cream. (I got two scoops a few months back, waffle cone, the ice cream was filled to the top - I don't remember the there was one time that it was so little ice cream.) As I walked out and really looking forward to try the blueberry shortcake flavor. There's no blueberry. Not even a swirl of anything blueberry at the bottom scoop. Just some cake / dough. So I returned to the shop and asked. Is this really the blueberry Shortcake? There's no blueberry. The staff said yes. Emmm ... okay... What's wrong here. I felt ripped off. Really disappointed with this visit. Why would I buy ice cream like this again? I may as well go get a whole pint from the grocery store. It would guarantee the flavor stated and a whole lot more ice cream. Ice cream is supposed to make you happy. But ... I think this ruined my trust for Van Leeuwen. Would I go back to other Van Leewen location? Prolly not. This ruined it.
Cute little ice cream spot with some interesting flavors amongst the traditional ones PLUS a whole slew of vegan selections as well! I'm not a hard core vegan but have friends who are and knowing I can bring them here and have a bite together without having to question every ingredient or what is a huge plus plus plus! An even bigger bonus is that their waffle cone ACTUALLY is delicious, can't tell you how many times I've been looking forward to my last licks of ice cream to enjoy with my come to be sorely disappointed by tasteless cones but not here!
Van Leeuwen is always a go to for me when I'm in the area. It's great if you are sensitive to milk since they offer vegan options. They always have some pretty cool Flavors, I've missed out on the Mac and cheese one....I definitely will get there next time for that drop. They are a little bit pricey but you are getting some quality ice cream with great flavor. I really like their location by the water in Williamsburg. The service there is second to none!

Limited Edition Flavors. GOOD. Prefer the Limited Edition flavored Ice Cream more than the Regular flavored Ice Cream from VAN LEEUWEN. Self descriptive flavors are usually spot on in taste. A lot of choices for ice cream. It has some vegan flavors. Van Leeuwen has a location in Greenpoint. Hipsters have taken over the area. They get bad reputations but they do good things like open places like this. Get ice cream in cones or cups. I came in with my friend one night after getting some pizza. They have a few other locations but this is my favorite of these. It's easy to get to from the MTA station a few blocks away. They have a seasonal menu so they have different stuff each time. I had the Cookie Crumble And Strawberry Jam. This is about $6 for a scoop. Another option is to get it as a sundae, which adds toppings to any ice cream. It's $9.50 for a couple vegan scoops. This is topped with cacao nibs, chocolate sauce, and whipped cream which is vegan too. It's worth if it you're hungry. They also have milkshakes and ice cream sandwiches. It gets more expensive than typical ice cream. It's the bad thing about it. This shit is very good though. read more
Great ice cream spot with many locations in the city. This is our go to ice cream shop in Brooklyn. One scoop is $5.75 and two scoops is $7.75. Great flavors to try. Now they also deliver to your home...who doesn't want a pint of Van Leeuwen?! read more
FYI: THEY ARE CASHLESS. This is one of multiple locations around NYC which is fantastic since this place is so awesome! Dairy ice cream with ample vegan options. Their vegan ice cream is so BOMB, idk why anyone would even want to order dairy here. I tried the cookie crumble strawberry jam as well as the plain strawberry (both vegan) and they were super delicious. Very creamy and flavorful. I had mine in a sugar cone which was yummy. They also have waffle cones for $1 extra. And if you're a messy eater like me, just ask for a cup. Rotating flavors. Reasonable prices. Friendly service. Cannot recommend this amazing ice cream enough! read more
This is the best vegan ice cream I have had. It does not even compare to the daIry free ones I have purchased from my local market. I went in there was a short line, which gave me time to mull over the menu at the different flavors. I did notice that the waffle cone was rather popular as it is what was being ordered by the different couples that was there. I was different, I needed something to take home and sit down to actually enjoy without being rushed to go anywhere. I chose the cookies and cream. It was a great choice, rich and creamy, full of flavor. For the price of $10 it was well worth it. That is going to be my go to location for my ice cream. The service was excellent, it was clean, and pArking wasn't bad. read more

Not sure why it's taken me so long to go here, but glad I finally did. This summer's been a scorcher, so getting some top notch ice cream actually makes the day obviously cooler but also so much better. Got one vegan, one regular scoop and both were delectable. Like most places, they allow you to taste, but there's no display case to show you what the many flavors look like, so you kinda have to sample as you can't taste with your eyes, so to speak. That said, the service here is pretty good too. read more
Singing da Ba ba bllueeessss...Berry Pie Ice Cream that is. I can't believe I've been in NY this long and haven't tried Van Leeuwen. But hey, once you have your favs it's hard to stray. So I fell into the seasonal trap and like in Willy Wonka couldn't resist da blueberry. Tbh I should have stuck with the earl gray which preface alert: I am the biggest fan of. The ice cream was no exception. In any case earl gray was a solid ten. Blueberry was an 8.5. Take home to your fam kinda level. The brown sugar cookie dough flavor was fantastic! It has walnuts which gives it a nutty taste throughout, and the cookie dough tasted amazing! The waffle cones are crispy and have just the right level of sweetness. The flavor selection was also great! The only negative is that it was a bit pricey. One scoop is over $6. It was a nice sunny day & I was craving some ice cream! Me & my friends were walking in Williamsburg & one of my friends said we needed to try some Van Leeuwen! I've heard of them before but never had a chance to try - so this was my opportunity! The place itself is pretty small! There were about 3 booth like spaces to enjoy indoors so we snatched a table right away! I'm very indecisive when it comes to choosing flavors but the worker was super sweet & gave me samples!!! I tried the brown sugar cookie dough & was in awe! I'm also a HUGE fan of pistachio but sometimes pistachio ice cream just doesn't sit right ... LET ME TELL YOU - this has to be the best pistachio ice cream I've had! So creamy, melts in your mouth, tastes just like pistachio but not overly sweet or processed! I had to get both flavors (2 scoops) in a big waffle cone! I was in HEAVEN. Exactly what I needed. I paid a little over $10 for two scoops so it's definitely on the pricier side but worth it if you're having a craving for some GOOD ice cream! read more

They do NOT TAKE CASH. Even for one $11 milkshake. Then you have to give your cell number so you can get a cash card to get ice cream so you can get spammed by advertisers. They are expensive and we try to find them on sale at Hmart/fairway. I know the Chain were giving out pints to healthcare workers during the pandemic too, which was very sweet of them. read more

This ice cream is way too good to pass on. Worth the hype? Totally. I think the only time I had really good earl grey ice cream was probably from when I ate it at the west coast. These flavors are so hearty and wholesome. The texture of the ice cream is also nice, not too soft not too hard. I probably devoured my scoop of ice cream in about two minutes. read more

Pretty freaking expensive in my opinion... $9.71 for a hot chocolate BUT it is a very decadent hot chocolate and you choose one scoop of ice cream to go in it. So I've been to this location a couple times and I absolutely love their ice cream. Why? BECAUSE IT TASTES LIKE GELATO! It's not marketed as that but their ice cream is so creamy and decadent. And the flavors are delicious! I had the chocolate fudge brownie which is super chocolaty and rich with generous chunks of brownie. I also tried the mocha cookie crumble which had a very sugary fudge swirled in. It had a perfectly balanced coffee flavor with the chocolate. The ice cream is $5.75 for a small. $1 extra if you want a waffle cone but there's no extra charge for a sugar cone. They also have tons of vegan ice cream options and a few basic toppings to choose from. I got the honey comb topping and it has a toffee caramel taste to it. Always a favorite. I'm a huge fan of this chain and have been to this location a few times. Crossing over to plant-based has been quite the struggle, but Van Leeuwen helps make up for that. Prior to, I'd only flocked to their pistachio flavor. It's the bomb dot com. The few vegan flavors I sampled were just gross--too gritty, too tofu tasting, just not my speed. But with new vegan tastebuds in tow, or perhaps improved textures and flavors on their end, I'm thrilled to say I've found the smooth, creamy, excellence I found in the pistachio in the vegan equivalent of Planet Earth. It's a matcha, spirulina, almond dream. Very Concord grape is a close second. Cookie crumble strawberry jam fills my craving for texture and sweet and gooey. The cookie & cream caramel swirl is a bit too sweet, but tasty in small doses. Anyway, typing this as I'm on my way to the nearest VL for a fix. Later read more
