Came here to try their coffee and I actually enjoyed their matcha more than coffee! They had plenty tables and chairs in the indoor and outdoor space and we enjoyed sitting outside cause weather was great and we had our dogs :) We didn't struggle finding street parking but you have to pay for parking if you are staying and enjoying coffee or food there! Service was pretty good and fast. If you put your number when ordering, you will get a notification when it's ready!
Mango Matcha: 2/5 The mango matcha fell flat unfortunately. I watched the barista make this drink and did not have high expectations. The majority of cup was filled with Goya or Jumex mango juice (as you can imagine, the flavor was totally overtaken by the artificial juice flavor), followed by some syrup, oat milk, and premixed matcha from a squeeze bottle... for $8.50, it just didn't taste fresh or good quality. I tried my friend's pistachio latte which was better, but I don't think I would recommend/return for the drinks. Vibe and Service: 4.5/5 I would, however, return for the ambiance and how easy it is to grab food from the variety of stalls. Came to study/work with some friends and there was plenty of seating with outlets in the coffee shop itself and the adjacent food hall area if you don't mind a more bustling environment; plenty of people were doing the same. The cafe scene in SJ is strong if you like to get out of the house to get some work done alone or with friends, and this spot is a solid choice for that.
Playback Coffee definitely has a vibe. It gets pretty busy, and there's something nice about being surrounded by people--it's a good spot if you want to feel a little less stuck in your routine and just soak in that lively, everyday energy. Service-wise, no complaints at all. Everyone was friendly and welcoming, which I appreciated. That said... the drinks were a letdown. I ordered the pistachio matcha, and it was honestly not great. It tasted overly sweet with a very artificial pistachio flavor, and the matcha itself didn't taste authentic either--more like a flavored drink than real matcha. For the price they're charging (which is definitely on the higher end for matcha), I expected much better quality. My husband got a black coffee and wasn't impressed either--he said the flavor was pretty underwhelming. Overall, nice atmosphere and good service, but I'd probably come back for the space, not the drinks.
The ambiance is top tier. There's a lot of seating and tables, low music playing in the background. The design is super cute. I ordered a teddy graham latte (regular sweet, iced) and it was so delicious!! In addition, I also order the Ferrero rocher latte and it was just as delicious, especially if you're looking for something on the sweeter side! There was options for pastries. However, I did not partake. I did order bagels and they were good. There is a kiosk for self-service and an option to order with the cashier. I did go on Saturday morning which was fairly busy. However, there was still a lot of seating options and the drinks and bagels came out quickly. Overall, will definitely be returning!
I am normally an espresso guy, and I've been on the search for the perfect Bay Area espresso however this was a bit later in the afternoon so I opted for something different. Playback is in San Pedro market, sharing space with a bar that is completely emptied during the day. This means that there is ample seating both indoors and outdoors, including enclose outdoor patio for the cold and rainy days. The seating includes plenty of high tops, tables, and lounging spaces. Today I opted for one of the outdoor high tops in the shade. They have plenty of staff on hand to take and process your order quickly. The staff was friendly and professional, and my drink came out pretty quickly. I went for a lavender latte with regular milk. The temperature was perfect and the lavender was perfect kind of sweetness and flavor, without being too sweet or sugary. They still have some pastries in the cabinet, I didn't ask where they're from but I will do some next time. Of course, there are a lot of food options at the market even during the middle of the day. Overall, this is a great place to come whether you're meeting somebody and want to peruse the market, want to sit and chill or get some work done on your own, or even if you just want to people watch.
I had really high hopes of this place after seeing it on insta with the fun vinyl atmosphere and sharing the same owner as Academic Coffee. Nevertheless, the spaciousness and amount of seating here with outlets make it hard for people not to come by here. It's also right across from the parking garage. But, let's play it back... At a glance, their menu has a great amount of options considering they have hojicha and matcha in addition to coffee. There's even fun pastries, including a Dubai chocolate croissant and pistachio! It is really expensive though. The base price of a latte was already $8-$9. We ordered the specials: Hojicha Latte and Pistachio Latte. The Hojicha latte came with chocolate cold foam, which sounded yummy considering the nuttiness from the roasted green tea flavor could complement that richness. However...it was extremely watery. We could only taste the foam. My sister had to ask the barista to kindly add more syrup, but the barista was kind enough to remake it altogether and that Hojicha flavor decided to pop in! Not sure if they didn't put enough Hojicha powder at first, but we really appreciate the great service. This does tell us that their drinks might not be as consistent --- just as a note. The Pistachio Latte came with sprinkles of pistachio and vanilla cold foam. Now THIS was delicious. Great coffee flavor ratio to that pistachio syrup, which didn't taste artificial at all. Loved a good crunch. Seems like they won't mess up a cup of coffee here, but have yet to try their matcha. Just not sure about that base price point. Enjoyed sitting here in their sofa chairs though and their location being inside the San Pedro Market Square.
Really vibey and spacious coffee shop in downtown SJ! It was pretty crowded on a Saturday afternoon so it took awhile for our orders to come out. There's tons of seating both inside and outside. The matcha drinks were pretty good, but I feel like you have to get extra matcha if you really want the flavor to come through, which is an extra cost. Overall, bit on the pricy side but I love the variety of drinks and food options they have. The salmon lox bagel was also delicious! Will definitely come back to try some of the other drinks!
The pistachio vanilla latte is so tasty and very photogenic! I love how big the cafe is and the decor & ambiance of it. There is a cashier as well as a kiosk to order yourself, so we did not have to stand in line. Not sure if there is a live band here every Sunday but there was one this Sunday when I went, would come back!
I ordered ahead for the guava matcha latte, it was out right on time. The drink was great-- perfect guava flavor, not too overpowering! The location is very spacious with a lot of tables & chairs! A great communal working space. It's not too loud, perfect space for studying/working. Definitely would come back to try the other drinks & experience one of their events!
I've been wanting to try this place for a while now, and I'm sooo happy I did!! It is such a vibe!! I went on a Sunday around 11 and there was a little line as well as lots of people sitting, drinking, chilling , working, etc. such a big space though. Located in the same area of the Three Sisters Bar, I almost felt like getting a drink too lol such a good atmosphere! There was even a band setting up, I feel like they played around noonish. There's a cute little outside area too with lots of seating in a covered area where I sat and ate my goodies. I went twice in one trip to San Pedro Market. The first time I got a pistachio latte with vanilla cream cold foam and it was SO GOOD!!! Not too sweet at all, it was pure perfection!!! I also got a Spinach Artichoke croissant and Olive Oil Lemon cake, both were so incredible. This area is so fun bc there's so much to visit so I went and got a pizza then came back for a cold brew & another slice of the olive oil lemon pound cake. One thing I appreciate is I was asked if I wanted the end or the middle slice of the cake & just found that to be such good costumer service, it's always in the details! The cashier was so nice too, my orders were always made super quickly. There's a place off to the side for lids , water & napkins which was nice. There was also a tablet for ordering but most people ordered at the counter. Also when I went back on the second visit , the spinach artichoke croissant was gone so I feel like that's a popular one I would get if you see it!
great spot for the local students to grab a drink and study, as well for anyone looking for coffee. But their concept of matcha lattes is just not good. There is not matcha flavor at all. The flavor is overpowered by the choice of dairy you get, which I got oatmilk, and i saw which brand and its the Oatly Barista Edition, which is super thick, which nothing wrong with the choice, but it is such a powerful oatmilk, that at least the flavors of matcha should over compensate for. So i got their seasonal berry latte, and I was excited for the berry flavor, but also that was very mild. Their guava matcha at least you can taste the guava juice, but even then that drink lacked the matcha profile. I do think that they could improve in not masking the flavor of the matcha. Just maybe I will stick to coffees if I come back.
This place has been my girlfriend's go to for coffee ever since we discovered it. I'm pretty new to the matcha game, but lately I've become a MATCHAFOO and let me tell you, this spot is easily top two on my recent matcha journey. The strawberry cold foam they put on the matcha is super flavorful and not watery like most cold foams. The matcha itself is solid overall. Amazing place to come check out service is quick and on point, and the vibes are super chill and laid back. I'll definitely be coming back for the matcha, and my girlfriend for her weekend coffee fix.
This place is super cozy and a great place to wfh with multiple areas to sit or charge your laptop. The matcha is yummy but definitely not super sweet, they have options to add a flavor to it. The spinach pastry was to die for and the lox bagel was delicious!! Service is relatively quick granted it's always busy.
I really wanted to love this place since I've heard so many good things about their guava matcha! My friend and I stopped by on Monday around 2pm, and it was fairly busy. There's plenty of seating both indoors and outdoors, which makes it a great spot to work or study. I especially loved the outdoor area! We ordered the defying gravity (strawberry cream matcha), mango matcha, and guava matcha. Surprisingly, my friend ended up liking the guava matcha the most, even though she didn't think she would. As for me, none of the drinks really stood out. Defying gravity had potential, but it fell a little flat. After reading a few reviews later, I saw that they might use juice for the mango and guava flavors, which could explain why those didn't hit the mark for me. Overall, it's still a nice place to hang out or get some work done, so I might come back to give their coffee a try next time! read more
Playback never disappoints with any of their drinks! I recently tried their Fererro Rocher latte, so delicious. But my favorite so far is their Dulce de Leche latte. I think about it, wishing they were closer to me. They're located at San Pedro Square at the corner. Service is fast even though they're always busy the times I've gone. Staff have always been nice. Wished they had more gluten free pastries at they only have one. The area doesn't seem chaotic as I'm still able to have a comfortable conversation with friends even though there's always a lot of people. read more
Discovered this spot on IG and this was well worth the trip! Got their iced guava matcha latte and this unexpected combination was very good!! Spacious coffee shop in downtown sj and they have a lot of seating inside. The baristas and workers were chill. I got the Tiramisu Latte and it was yummy! The tiramisu cream was thick and texture was good! The vibes were nice too. Their matcha drinks and teddy graham lattes looked great as well. read more
Solid place to hang out and study. Plenty of chairs and tables. Love the ambiance with the Halloween decorations and cafe setting of a music studio. They have seasonal drinks with the Wicked theme! I got the defying gravity which is a matcha latte with strawberry cream. The strawberry cream tastes just like the inside of the hello panda cookie. Decent matcha and when mixed with cream, it gives a subtle sweet strawberry flavor. Matcha here is towards the milky side. The you'll be popular maple pumpkin spice latte was decent. Good pumpkin spice flavor and coffee. Quick service, lots of street parking. Would go back for the strawberry cream taste! read more

Newer coffee spot in San Pedro Market! I believe it used to be a different coffee shop so it's pretty similar. I got the teddy graham latte and it was so goood!!!! Perfectly sweet and just enough caffeine. I went on a Thursday afternoon during lunch time with a few folks in line and service was quick! We were surprised to learn about Voyager being relocated to another section of San Pedro in order to make room for this new place, but the atmosphere for Playback Coffee really gives the place a unique, distinct feeling. The music clashes a bit with the ambiance (a lot of the songs playing were modern music which kinda went against the vibe that the interior was giving) but was tolerable enough. We decided to get the Strawberry Cream Soda and the Guava Matcha Latte. Coincidentally, the Guava Matcha Latte was actually sweeter than the soda, so we ended up switching drinks with each other. The service was relatively standard (not much really stood out) and the drinks, despite not matching our exact expectations, were alright. Overall a decent experience. I'm not entirely sure if this is a place I would frequent, but it's always nice to have new coffee places in San Jose that have good drinks. read more

The star rating for this business truly doesn't do it justice. While I didn't try any food this time, the pastry selection looked absolutely delicious. I did order an iced oat milk matcha latte (less sweet), and it was easily in my top five. The quality was exceptional -- I savored every sip. It definitely met my matcha standards! Service was fast and friendly, even with how busy it was. Both inside and outside were bustling with people grabbing their Saturday coffee, but there was no long line or wait. The ambiance is incredible -- I love the decor, color scheme, and overall vibe. It's a very pleasant spot to sit and unwind. Most of the indoor seating was taken, but there's outdoor seating available as well. I plan to come back when it's a bit less busy so I can relax and fully enjoy my drink. I definitely recommend this place and will be making a return trip soon! read more
Voyager used to be here and now they've opened up playback coffee! Great coffee shop with ample (and I mean ample) seating to get work done. I enjoyed their teddy bear latte and most of their drinks come with this sweet and addicting cream foam top that really makes the drink. I will say since you're in DTSJ you'll have to deal with the annoying parking situation so either pay a flat fee or pay hourly! read more
Iced chai was watery and fell flat, but the kouign-amann was delicious! Long line, but cute concept. Nice location in San Pedro square. Heads up that if you have coffee from voyager (across the street) and try to walk into San Pedro Square the security will stop you and not let you enter. That was weird LOL but I guess I understand. read more

Such an exciting new spot in San Pedro square with really unique drinks! I tried the guava matcha and it was one of the best drinks I've had in a while!! The quality of matcha is amazing and this drink came with oatmilk automatically. I love the music theme throughout the space and the staff was so kind and helpful! This new coffee shop in San Pedro Square is open daily from 7 am - 7 pm. Like many new coffee shops, expect to pay $8 per drink. Their drink menu has the basics plus specialty drinks like an iced mango matcha latte (what I had). They have a pastry case with basics like chocolate croissant and one GF and one vegan option. There is plenty of large tables and chairs inside and out, so it is good for groups. The staff were friendly and informative and the music is on the louder side but I didn't find it disruptive. read more
So many places serving matcha nowadays! It's so hard to keep up. This location is right at San Pedro square. There's a parking structure nearby so that makes it easy. I first saw this place on social media because of their iced matcha drinks. The line can get long but it moves quickly. Their service was also pretty quick as well. There's plenty of seating inside and outside. -mango matcha: 4/5, The drink comes with oat milk as the default which is nice if you're lactose intolerant. This was my first time having a mango matcha so I didn't know what to expect. I liked it! The matcha paired well with the mango. I believe they use a mango juice which was why the flavor was still present even after mixing. If you want a matcha with a super strong matcha taste, I would say this isn't for you. That being said, It was still delicious and I would get it again. Next time I would love to try their matcha guava or even the coffee. read more

Space is gorgeous but the teddy graham latte is so sweet and not coffee-forward at all. It was too syrupy even for my friend with the biggest sweet tooth I know. We also got a vanilla latte and it kinda just fell flat. Baristas are kind and quick. I just think the drink recipes need tweaking because the interior can't carry bad coffee. I don't know if I'd consider this coffee shop successfully third-wave, which made me disappointed because I frequent Academic Coffee weekly so I was disappointed that its sibling coffee shop isn't there yet. read more
There is a parking garage nearby which I believe the first hour or something is free. There's also street parking if you want. Parking is pretty easy to find. Playback Coffee has friendly staff and drinks come out real fast! I personally think the guava matcha is the best, compared to other guava matcha places in SJ. Teddy graham latte is also a close second. Super strong flavors for both. The mango matcha latte wasn't too good in my opinion, the mango syrup just overpowered the drink. Would totally go again for espresso or guava matcha :) The place recently opened up more seating, which is super spacious and makes a great study place! read more
I was hoping for a little bit more with this new coffee shop. From what I've seen, they are connected to Academic Coffee. I love Academic so I had high hopes for this place. I wish the design of the place was something more. It doesn't look all that different and I don't get a vintage vibe from them like they said they had. However, they are early on in their opening so perhaps that will change over time. I got an iced matcha latte, sweetened with honey, with the honey cream top. The drink was good but I wouldn't pay for the cream top again. It was $2.25 which I don't think is worth it. I would come back for a regular matcha though. The mango matcha on the menu was different from expected. They use mango juice instead of a purée and I believe there is no milk in it (but correct me if I'm wrong). Not bad just take it as you will. read more
I love this place! It's inside of San Pedro Square Market and they have lots of seating, some outlets and they share a space with a bar but many ppl use that area also. It's right next to the restroom and they also have a covered outdoor seating area. The drink menu has always been good here and they also have seasonal drinks that I love trying! Music here is kinda loud which matches their vibe and on some evenings I've been here a live band has came in to play. The coffee and matcha's are a bit pricey but a nice sweet treat with a working/social ambiance is what this spot offers. read more
There's a few cafes nearby, but decided to try out this new spot Menu has the coffee basics. The iced chai I got wasn't very flavorful, wouldn't pay $8 for it again. The location and ambiance are what they do have going for them. Vibey interior with a good amount to tables to work at, plus all of the shaded outdoor seating outside. Overall good place to hang or work but you probably won't be wowed with their drinks. read more

PRESS PLAY ON PLAYBACK COFFEE! Playback Coffee in its soft opening and I'm happy to see a new coffee shop at San Pedro Square! (It took over the old Voyager location.) This is a new venture from the people who created Academic Coffee, so if you like Academic then you'll like Playback too! I grabbed a vanilla latte on my way to work the other day and it was yummy! I like the new retro/vintage music theme (there are some turntables and vintage radios). I'm looking forward to coming back for the grand opening! read more
Great location in the San Pedro Market blocks. Covered outdoor seating is huge, but so is the volume of voices as people enjoy this nice coffee shop and area. The vibe of vinyl records and albums is well done. Nice touch on music in the digital ago. Easy order process. In/out quickly, even on busy days like the weekend. Inside, there is a lot of seating and indoor access to other stores in the building. The indoor seating is shared with a bar with a vintage look and feel. Unique area and well worth hanging out there. read more
I tried the Peppermint White Mocha with oat milk, and it was alright. I was hoping for a stronger peppermint flavor, especially considering the drink was almost $10 before tip. I don't think I'd visit again unless someone else wants to try the cafe. read more

This cafe in Downtown SJ has lately been my favorite place to come get drinks, bites, and lock in. I have been here several times before and got myself drinks such as Guava Matcha, Tiramisu Latte, Pistachio Latte, and Ube Latte, and bites like Spinach & Artichoke Escargot. For the drinks themselves, I love how they deliver the flavors as expected, as the names suggest: the pistachio flavor really comes through in the Pistachio Latte, and the good balance of guava and matcha in the Guava Matcha drink. For the pastry itself, it was your good, standard pastry; a good amount of flavor and not too salty. One thing to note is that, as someone who likes a strong, bold coffee taste, I often have to pay an extra dollar for an extra shot of espresso at other cafes. However, here at Playback Coffee, the coffee taste is just perfect for my taste buds. Besides the food and drinks, it's within walking distance of SJSU (~20 min), making it convenient. It also has plenty of seats and free Wi-Fi for people, or SJSU students like me, to lock in. Personally, I like being in a spacious environment that is neither too loud nor too quiet, with a bunch of people around me doing their computer work, since it motivates me to lock in on my work, making Playback Coffee a perfect place for me to get work done. Although I must say the drinks here are a bit pricier than those at other cafes, since it would cost me almost $10 for just one drink. However, I do think that it's worth it in terms of the taste of the drinks being better than most other cafes I've been to. Overall, I do highly recommend coming here, and I cannot wait to try their other drinks and bites as well! read more
This is my first time visiting Playback coffee since it's no longer Voyager. I saw a video of how good their matcha is so I had to give it a try. Came on a Friday to get some work done and grab a matcha with a friend. Lots of seating still. It's right across from San Pedro parking garage so very convenient. Ice guava matcha latte 2.5/5: quite disappointed with this matcha. Although the matcha had a nice bright green color but they use guava juice so it watered down the latte so much. I couldn't really taste the guava. The drink was more like a refresher rather than a latte. $8 is also so steep for a very average matcha. My friend got a iced latte that was okay as well. read more
Their matcha was really good. The guava was overpowering for me but still delish. I want to come back and try their regular matcha latte :) If you haven't been to San Pedro Square, it's a nice area to explore. There's rarely street parking, but there is a garage ($) next to Playback. read more

Such a cute cafe with a spacious interior and a ton of outdoor seating. It is very "record" retro vibes, and the general seating arrangement feels like a casual lounge. We ordered a Matcha Guava drink, and it was very well done. Not only could we taste the matcha flavor, the guava also felt fresh and blended well with the matcha. Definitely want to come back and try more of their selections! read more
This place has been my go to every month I go into the office. With the time constraints in between meetings, this is the closest coffee shop to my office. I usually go with my go to Americano at all coffee shops. For the price, I feel like it's a little steep for the size. I am willing to come back as it's closest to the office and sometimes it's good to get a change of roast. I feel like it's not as strong as SB, Pete's or Philz. I use Lavazza beans at home read more
This is a nice spot. There is plenty of seating with a mix of traditional tables, comfortable chairs, being in San Pedro Square and might get crowded but going at 9 AM on a Saturday, It was easy to park and easy to get in. The barista recommended the Teddy graham latte. It was good and wasn't too sweet, which was a nice surprise. The ham and cheese croissant was really flavorful and very filling. My friend got the curry croissant and said it was great. The price for two lattes and two croissants was about $35 with tip. This is definitely a treat spot to go to and I would like to try some of their layered Matcha drinks next time. read more

Came in today thanks to a BOGO promo--perfect timing since drinks here are a bit on the pricier side (especially the matcha-based ones; coffee drinks are more standard in price). I tried the iced matcha lemonade and got the iced mango matcha for my friend. Both drinks were super refreshing! You can really taste the matcha quality--bold, smooth, and not too bitter. The lemonade added just the right amount of tang without overpowering the matcha, and the mango matcha was the perfect hot day drink--fruity, creamy, and well-balanced. FYI: Free parking for the first 90 minutes in the garage lot across the street! Otherwise, opt for street parking. read more

The pistachio latte tastes amazing! I was hesitant to try it because I'm not the biggest pistachio fan but it blended really well with the taste of the coffee here. I love the cream top and the chunks of pistachio you can chew on as you drink it. The blueberry muffin was a bit of a disappointment. It tastes good but they did not warm it up as much as I would've liked. There was also barely any blueberry in the muffin, it was probably 95% muffin. The place inside is very spacious and had a variety of seats and tables. There were people studying and chatting and it was only slightly crowded on a Sunday afternoon. I liked how the music wasn't too loud because I love the ambiance of hearing human chatter. I think with the weather warming up, I would find myself visiting this area more. read more

Their coffee is absolutely horrible. Oh my goodness I came here two times to see if maybe the first time was just a fluke, but nope, still horrible. I'm a cold brew guy. Just plain black coffee. I swear I'm drinking water with the hint of cold brew. Starbucks and McDonald's is infinitely better. Will never come back to this sad excuse of a coffee shop. read more

The location was very nice and they have a great decor and atmosphere - we stay outside at the wooden tables . I got the Americano (my regular ) which was not bad and daughter got the teddy bear latte which she enjoyed as well . We will come back ! read more
Today I tried playback coffee which I had been wanting to try for the longest and let me just say it was great! It is a very spacious cafe with seating indoor and outdoor. The staff are super friendly and helpful especially if you do not know what to get. We ordered the Teddy Graham(signature house drink) latte iced and Ferarro Rocher(seasonal drink) latte iced. They both are super flavorful with still the flavor of coffee. It is not too sweet but also not too strong. I think it is a perfect combination of both. I definitely recommend this spot. Will be back soon! read more
