FRAUDS! I went here based off of a friend's recommendation, super excited to see what cards I could add to my collection. I went inside around 7pm, about an hour before they close. The employees seemed nice and were willing to help me out any way they could. That's about all the positive things I can say about them... I went and bought a Hidden Fates ETB that looked sealed even though the packaging was slightly loose, which was around $160. My friend got a Chilling Reigns ETB as well. While I was in there I did notice they sell their cards at a premium, meaning above market price. (So fair warning if you do decide to come here after reading this) When I got home, I opened the ETB packaging and took out the card packages with my friend. I noticed the card packages had been resealed based off of prior videos I've seen about how to verify older Pokemon sets with my friend. This was a huge bummer as I was really looking forward to having at least a chance at getting a chase card. This wouldn't warrant a review from my end as long as the employees and the owner were understandable, as this does happen and is unfortunate! However, I contacted the employees and they tried telling me that Sun and Moon era uses "different machines" and they (the card shop) "validate their purchases at the highest level"!? Then they told me to contact the owner on Facebook, so I did. The owner not only treated me with confrontation and backed his buy without understanding but also didn't give me a refund/store credit for this mishap. As the buyer I shouldn't be responsible for this for any reason and this falls on their "validation at the highest level". (Which I'm assuming is the owner, for a small card shop lol) Not to mention the owner tried to back himself up based on someone else's eBay post LMAO, which proves nothing. Needless to say, I'm never coming back here again. I would give 0 stars if I could. read more

There are so many problems with this store. Their trade value are pretty low , and if you do choose to sell your item to them they raise the price 3x. Don't go to this store if you're looking for anything specific. they don't have a system and they make you look for it. They have a crazy amount of anything . pokémon , video games, etc. honestly i've never had a good experience at this store. prices are so high , employees look like they hate you , or flat out won't even ask what you need help with. 1/5 read more

That place is great! Ive went there a couple times and the workers there are very nice, they have a lot of old and new things in there so it's a good place for anyone to shop. They also let you trade in things you don't need like games and even figures like amiibo! If you have the time you definitely should stop by and check out what they have! read more

Honestly if you are looking to buy retro games I would consider buying online, I understand that the store has to make money, but man does this place upcharge for popular games. Very overpriced, Ebay is definitely better than this shop. Service wise it's what you expect from these kinds of stores, the employees might say hello to you, or they will continue "working" on cleaning a disc or organizing cards. Moral of the store "Local" shops cost an arm and a leg to play your favorite titles from back in the day, curb your impulses and just buy off Ebay and wait the few days for shipping. read more

I knew this place existed and it had been on my radar for just a short time. I made time to visit and I'm very glad I found this gem. Upon entering I was greeted and took a quick lap around the store to take it all in. I even took a second lap later because there was so much to look at. I did have something specific I was looking for. I found so much more though. There were cases filled with games, consoles and just so much to look at and appreciate. I could have easily gone over budget with a really good inventory of everything, so it seemed. The prices looked to be competitive not too high and not too low. I believe I saw an employee who was the phone answering a question about inventory. It's good to know that you could call and inquire about something specific but really this is the kind of place that you need to be at in person to really appreciate. Appreciate I do. Guy working was nice enough, but store is very cramped and WAY overpriced. Found exact same used games for half the price at Lukie Games website. Got Wii Super Smash Bros BRAWL for $16.47 at Lukie VS $32 here. Got TWO Wii Motion Plus Adaptors for $11.47 VS ONE for $15 here. CRAZY high prices! If you can wait a few days for shipping, there are plenty of online retailers to save you $$. read more

Been coming here for years, at first they would give terrible offers if you wanted to sell them anything & double up the price on what they sell if not more. Example for a lot of 2-5 funkos they'll offer $14 but then sell them at $10+ each a piece. They did finally start to fix that and give people better amounts. It always smells like weed in there too so it can be off putting for people who have children. The workers are nice, but don't expect them to ask if you need help, you'd need to ask them yourself. Overall the store is good if you're looking for random movies. read more

The staff are very nice and it was easy to have a conversation with them. They had a good selection of games that were relatively easy to view and sort through. They had some good CIB GB and GBA games. My only complaint with my experience while visiting is that they are renovating. A few items I was interested in were "not for sale yet" due to renovations and had not yet been priced. This was disappointing as THAT selection was something I was serious about purchasing, but the staff nor the owner would discuss selling the items until renovations were over. I'm from out of town and had gone out of my way to check out the store, and the staff knew that from our conversations. I just wish the customer service was there in this special case. read more

The place always smells like weed and they have children running the store. They're over priced, and I noticed they were just throwing random price stickers on some of the games. It's really not worth asking questions there either the kid is so smug about showing off that they rip people off. I love the store and the game selection. They always have rare games I'm looking for. However they are severely SEVERELY overpriced. A game that I got from there 4 years ago that was $30 is now $150. A $120 markup really?! PS2 games are going for $40 plus that's asinine. Ps5 games are $70! And PS4 brand new $60! The staff is freindly and I love the weed smell it always has too even though some people might not like that. But man everything about this place would be perfect if they can just drop those prices alot a bit. So many other places like this that sell for alot cheaper. Friendly staff at this hole-in-the-wall used game shop. Most of the prices for vintage games are fair market value, some I found slightly overpriced based on how common the titles were. There are a few rare and hard to find titles for older vintage systems, and found some priced low presumably because the owner wasn't aware the items were less common, or didn't know what system the cartridges were for. Great place to shop for Nintendo 8, 16 and 64-bit titles that are harder to find. read more

If you enjoying paying higher than eBay prices and buying beat up looking retro games this is the place to come. Example from my last and final trip there: Super Mario RPG was there for $85 and the label was garbage. On eBay you can pick up a good copy and they average around $50-60. This place is a joke and I've even asked the owner to give me a better price on a certain game but instead of giving a polite answer why he couldn't. He was a arrogant asshole and spoke down to me like he knows better. Bottom line: Buy your retro games on eBay, save the trip, and get a better price and condition game. read more

This place has a great selection of games and other products to choose from. Unfortunately they are severely overpriced. Every game I was interested in was about 20% over market value. I do not mind paying market value or even a little above to get it in person but they were severely overpriced. One of the rarest games for n64 was 400 bucks over market value seriously!!! Need to revisit where they get their prices because they are severely overpriced would be better off purchasing online. Won't come back unless they stop overpricing games so much. read more

I am an avid collector and I know going into a retro game store my expectations are that the prices will be at or above full market value. I don't mind paying a bit above market if it means I can support a local store, especially if there is a good group of people working there. I've given this place several chances but what I encountered in my latest visit was ridiculous and more importantly, a waste of time so I won't be coming back again. I hope that my review will save others some time as well. Below is a recap of my experience: 1. Walked in and was greeted by a guy who was helping his friend out fixing a game. After a while of standing at the counter, I thought he would ask if I was looking for anything since I was just kind of waiting, but that didn't happen. 2. I saw some games that I was interested in behind the counter and asked for prices on several of them. Much like the other reviews that I've read about this place, the clerk told me that those games aren't for sale and that his boss is gone at the moment but will post them on ebay when he returns. OK, so the games that are in the store will never be available to buy in person? This was confusing to say the least. 3. I responded that I don't really understand. Why pay the greater than 12% in EB/PP fees when I'm standing here right now ready to buy some games? The response was then that the owner hasn't priced the games yet and he is at a convention (mind you, the owner has been at a convention every time that I have visited this store). Regardless, now the reason has changed which adds to the confusion. 4. The clerk then offered to text the owner to ask about pricing for a couple of the games I was interested in. 5. After a couple minutes, the owner actually did respond to his credit, however, he may have well added "now go f-yourself" after he told me the price. -For the first game, the owner quoted me double the market price (or $20 over market) -For the second game, I was quoted 50% over full market value (or $20 over market again) 6. I thought that maybe the prices I had in mind might be old so I quickly verified online that my prices were in line. I told the guy thanks and took off. It was a frustrating experience that left a bad taste in my mouth... from the point of being told those games were off limits despite being on display to the criminally high asking prices. Don't get me wrong, I understand that as a business owner, you can charge any amount that you wish but if you are charging that far above market, doesn't that start to jeopardize repeatable business at a certain point as buyers become more aware of the market themselves? Additionally, it builds resentment b/c those customers find out how much you cheated them when they didn't know any better and the store develops a reputation as word gets out. I've read the other responses here on Google reviews about how the owner wants to assure the customer that all games are tested/cleaned before selling them which is why he has to charge higher prices. The problem with that is that everyone does that (whether you buy from ebay, other stores, apps, etc) so it doesn't set you apart from the rest... especially to justify price gouging your customer base. read more

Best retro store on the south side by far. They are really small but have an absolutely massive selection including many imports. The staff is very friendly and enthusiastic. And to top it all, their prices are pretty reasonable, better than a few other retro stores I can name for sure. All in all, I'd say it's worth a trip out here even if there are closer stores to your home. read more

This place is a joke. 3 out of the 4 GameCube games I've bought here I've had to return due to technical issues. The last game I purchased, I asked if I could test it in store before driving 45 minutes back to my house. The man working was about to test it, but their in store GameCube had no cables attached to turn it on. He then said, "I'm sorry, we can't test the game." They sell cables for every console they sell, and he couldn't grab a pair just to make sure my game worked. Let it be known they don't give you money back for returns, ONLY IN STORE CREDIT. 2 stars seems more than fair. Let's start with the good, shall we? I will say without a doubt, EXCELLENT game selection. System selection is meh they do have occasionally some of the rarer stuff. One of the younger employees I do have to compliment his customer service. (Everyone else that I have dealt with in the past I barely got a grunt out of unless they were confronted.) Now the bad. The pricing for 95% of the games/systems are absolutely ludicrous. Price gouging at it's finest. I understand it's a "mom and pop" store, but when your competition like Video Games Then & Now, People Play Games, etc (they're located in WrigleyVille) have better pricing there is a major issue. This is a newer store, I hope to see as time goes on pricing of games become more fair for consumers. For now I will take my business elsewhere. read more

This place has a great selection of games. Their prices are hit or miss, but fair for the most part. Their prices on their consoles are fair as well. My only problem was one day I tried to trade in a couple games to buy another game and I felt completely low balled. I took these same games to a store in Countryside and received three times the amount they offered me here, in store credit. Again, I wasn't expecting full value on my games and I know how it goes when you trade in games. I didn't even want cash. all I wanted to do was trade them in for another game. read more

Serious NES collection. I've been to just about every used gaming store in the southwest side and accompanying suburbs (disc replay, play n trade, 1/2 price books, etc.) and they all pale in comparison in terms of volume and rarity. A good number of their games I've never even seen before. Pricing for common games seems on par with stores and online. Pricing for less common games seems a bit high, but the alternative is to buy online based on pictures, if even offered, which I don't prefer. It's always better to see in person. I'll be checking Play It Retro for any of my games before buying online from now on. Support local businesses! read more
