I like the facility but they can't seem to keep staff. I pay for the black card and many times I can't use the tanning or other benefits because there is no one up front. We've had an ongoing problem with plumbing in the ladies locker room where we've gone for days without working toilets. Plus the h-vac isn't working properly. Stuffy in the gym and cold in the locker rooms and it takes forever to get equipment repaired. Responsibility on upper management is a big failure. Also, the women's locker/ bathroom is filthy... all of it. I read pf response to other reviews asking to address cleanliness with staff and quite honest that is not the member's job... you need to address that yourselves asap. Crunch will be opening across the street soon and I bet you will lose more members than you think if you don't address your issues swiftly and permanently. I normally really like this gym, but this morning I had a bad experience due to the staff that was on. Two girls ignored me when I came in (nbd by itself), and then burst into laughter as soon as I walked away. then they started asking who I was, so I knew they were laughing at and talking about me in a negative way. Like the ithaca gym itself, however the sanitation is apalling. This gym had a covid breakout that made the papers 10 days ago, so you would think the place would be sparkling. Instead, i stared at a dust bunny on the floor between my legs on the stairmaster. Same dust bunny on same floor next visit two days later. After third visit i mentioned same issue to desk. They assured me it would be cleaned. Visit 4, now 6 or 7 days later, right after an outbreak, floor hasnt been touched. Same resiliant dust bunny in exact same place. The guy at the counters defence? Dont worry you cant get covid from dirty floors. Update:Went back Day 8. Floor STILL not clean. Went to the front counter, the blonde girl insists the floor was cleaned and insisted had video to prove it. Dumfounded i led her back to the machine in question and asked her if that looked like it had just been mopped to her. After looking at the obviously still dirty floor her explanation turned to well it was just her job to check people in and wipe down the parts of the machines the people touched with thier hands and the floors were the night crews issue.So at least we had established that the floors were in fact still dirty i thought, and i got her to confirm i wasnt making this up or creating a situation that didnt exist and she agreed. I then 20 minutes later get a call from the owner/manager? while im still in the gym. Apparently the blonde girl had called him to alert him of my complaint. He then while on the phone tells me the floors have been cleaned. This is comical because in LITERALLY STANDING IN HIS GYM LOOKNG at the piles of dirt while i am on the phone listening to him telling me its clean. Since he was not present i asked him to call an employee over and they could be his eyes and confirm the issue. He did not take me up on that offer.I then told him that his place just had a coronavirus outbreak and he had an obligation to make the place sparkle and his responce? "It wasnt an outbreak, it was just one person" Not the expected responce of "Oh your absolutly right everything should sparkle and im on this and will get it corrected right away"at all. I then explained to him that this Yelp review received a corporate responce and they wanted to know how my interaction with him was going. Then he immediately pulled one of those slime moves and begins to deflect by asking me why im giving an 18 year old girl employee a hard time. Once he found out corporate was listening he immediatly attempted to discredit me by saying i was being mean to an 18 year old girl based on third hand biased information from someone who just got caught lying to me. Recently started using this gym and have been very happy with it. Previously, I've been a member of other various gyms around Ithaca... first at the City Health Club and then at Island Health and Fitness. (I stopped going to the former when my summer membership expired. The CHC gym was kinda dumpy. I canceled my membership to Island mainly because of the cost, at least by comparison to how often I ended up using it. There was never any parking when I went there and it just became a bigger pain than anything else to use the place.) I joined Planet Fitness because of the price, for one, but also because I'm a pretty basic gym user and wanted something simple and accessible. I do cardio (30-60 minutes, depending on the day) and some weight training (mostly with machines like the leg extension, back extension, etc.). At Island, I had usually avoided a lot of the weight machines because they were always being used by big, grunty guys. I get that it's a gym and that the weight lifter-guys go with the territory...but I have to admit that I do enjoy that Planet Fitness is more for the basic gym-goer, as opposed to the gym rat/body builder-type. I haven't heard the Lunk Alarm go off yet at PF, but I'm sure it's bound to at some point when I'm there. Because PF is at the mall, parking is never really an issue...though I'm sure that if you try to go to PF on a weekend night then getting closer to the doors is probably not easy, if only because they're right across from the movie theater. Consider a longer walk though...because, hey, you're going to the gym anyway. :) The gym itself is well-kept, the equipment is both clean and in great condition, and the vast majority of the staff has been very helpful (I say "vast majority" because the guy who helped me when I was initially signing up didn't have the right paperwork for me to go through/sign initially... gave me the wrong keycard, etc., but all was corrected during a follow-up visit). The only real downsides I can note? There's no pool... and there's no rowing machine. There's a row-style weight machine, which is fine, though I'd prefer the cardio machine if it was available. Also, for anyone complaining that PF offers soda or food (like pizza or bagels, which they rationalize as a "thank you" to gym-goers)? There's a simple way to deal with that --- don't eat or drink any of it. Losing weight/staying healthy, they say, is 80% diet and 20% working out... and it's up to each individual to have enough motivation or self-restraint to not partake in gobbling up the goodies. There are always going to be bad foods or drinks out there that will hinder your efforts to stay healthy. Maybe consider avoiding the consumption of pizza or bagels at the gym as another avenue of training your mind about what is healthy vs. what is not. That's just my view though. read more

This is my least favorite gym in all of Ithaca. 99% of the employees are all young, high school or college students, and they typically have like big social workouts. All their friends come and "work out together" causing more of a disruption than anything. Literally herds of them, including the employees, will hang around and chat and horse around etc It takes space and machines away from those who actually are trying to work out. I have been a Planet Fitness member at multiple locations over the past 5 years. I loved them--personalized service, good equipment, knowledgeable trainers--and they really improved my fitness tremendously. I recommended them to friends all the time. When I moved to Ithaca for a new job, it was a no-brainer to join the local club. I first noticed the revolving door of employees, particularly "fitness trainers." How are they finding so many qualified/certified people to provide fitness instruction? The management has seemed to change, as well--with no improvement in competence as far as I can tell. There used to be a woman at the front desk that had some sort of management title on her name tag. I remember coming to the gym one day to find her on her cell phone behind the front desk using profane language. I took it as a one-off episode of nonprofessionalism and went on with my day, but it was very bizarre. I have not seen that employee in months, but if the current manager has any role in this club's move, he's not any better. This PF is moving across the street from its current location. A week or so ago they had a sign saying "hey, we're closed on X days to move the strength equipment to the new facility." Because the cardio equipment they currently have is in permanent disrepair (40% of their recumbent bikes were out of order this past weekend) and the fact that they were saying the new facility would be open by Christmas, I figured that they were getting new cardio equipment, and that the day after the strength equipment was moved would be the first day at the new facility. The next day, my husband and I opened the door to the new location. We were promptly met by a woman I had never seen before who unsmilingly greeted us with, "You can't come in here." (How's THAT for a customer greeting?) We cheerfully suggested that maybe they should put up a sign with the date of the move so they don't have to stand at the front door and tell everyone not to come in, we were repeatedly informed that, "we told everyone at the gym." Even though someone from our household is at the gym 10 different times a week, it seems like we are not part of "everyone". The implication was that this situation was somehow our fault/due to our ignorance--incredibly bizarre given that situations like these are typically miscommunications and not anyone's fault! I work in a customer service field, and I understand how to talk to clients. Clearly this woman doesn't. When I tried to de-escalate this needlessly combative response to our suggestion, she just dug in her heels and repeated that we should somehow magically know not to come to the new location today despite no email, no signage at the new or old location, nothing on their website or Facebook page, etc. The weirdest part? During our interaction with this aggressive employee, the general manager was actually standing behind her for part of the conversation before wandering away in apparent disinterest. By the way, we STILL don't have a potential date for the opening of the new facility--it will at least be after the new year. This means we have all been paying full price for gym memberships when the facility is currently a few run-down bikes, treadmills, and ellipticals (they already took some cardio stuff like the stair stepper away). There are a few dumbbells left, but people are literally stacking weight plates to sit on since they took all of the weight benches away. The photos were taken 2 days ago showing the current situation. Zero communication, no strength equipment for about 2 weeks despite paying full price, management that seems to think aggressive interactions with clients are okay--how tone deaf could they be to the customer experience? Today is my last day at Planet Fitness after years of membership, and it is solely due to this club's apathy toward its members' experience. read more

An unpleasant experience. Be CAUTIOUS about their hook! This is definitely the worst place I have ever been in the town. The manager is very RUDE with dirty words. ( How could a women at her 50s be so rude!) The staff there didn't tell the customer about there is an annual fee when you sign in. They keep saying there is no commitment before you sign up and then deduct various non-refundable fee after you sign in. I guess this is a way they make money, otherwise they will bankrupt soon. I'm a fan of gyms that do not allow grunters, both silent and loud (Loud grunters are the meatheads who try to impress women with their vocal bench pressing. Silent grunters are the ones who use no weight and do 10,000 reps in no time, usually with the weights banging against each other in rapid succession.) Planet Fitness not only discourages grunting, but they have an awesome "lunk alarm" that goes off if anyone is caught disobeying the anti-grunting rule. This gym isn't for everyone. Obviously not for grunters. Also not for anyone who wants a pool. And probably not the best if you come to the gym for social interaction. But if you want to use clean, newish cardio equipment and weight machines and be in an environment that encourages - no, celebrates! - people of all shapes and sizes, this is a great place to join. The gym offers two memberships - one for $10/month (includes use of all the equipment) and one for $20/month (includes gym privileges and use of the massage chairs and tanning beds). And a warning to you weird Atkins people - they have free pizza nights and bagel mornings every now and then. read more

I really love this gym. I have tried for years to use on-campus gym, and I hate feeling like I'm scrambling for parking, or am in a rat race and pressured to get off the cardio machines. PF is not only so much less crowded, there's tons of parking, but it is amazingly clean (and cheaper). For the price you can't really beat it. For people who are looking for basic gym use (e.g. cardio machine and light weight training), or people who are looking to get started with going to the gym for the first time -- this is perfect. That being said, I have seen people who are more the "gym rat" type and they seem at home, too. The staff is not overall friendly or chummy -- in fact, even though they smile at me when I come in I sort of feel like they don't really care about customers. The major except is the physical trainer. I would highly recommend signing up for a private lesson with him so he can work out a routine that works well for you. It's totally free (or at least, worked into your membership)! Even though I knew how the machines worked, I did this and don't regret it one bit -- it was nice to have someone else set a routine for me. Since then, if he sees me on the floor he always comes over to check on me, always makes sure to ask me how I'm doing, and is really keeping on top of my fitness goals. I think it really helps me remain motivated. One of the downsides to PF is that there are no group classes. This is a major bummer for me, but if you think about it that's what you get for the price. read more

This place gets too bad a rap on here. They just opened a beautiful new facility. The parking issues are a thing of the past. Everything is nice and new. It does get crowded at peak hours, but so does every gym, so if you complain about that, then you're the turd in the punch bowl. Staff is always very friendly, and overnight staff is always cleaning. Love to come in at 2-4 in the morning when only a few people not looking for social hour are in getting their work done. The new Spa area is really nice, I like that it feels a little secluded from the main scene, and has relaxing music separate from upbeat work out jams. Those giant fans! So much better than the old fans. I won't miss the gambit of trying to land a treadmill in the wind stream. New 360 workout area that keeps calling my name. The only way this place could get better is if it had an endless-pool treadmill. I'm not the biggest fan of the new lockers, but the new locker rooms are HUGE; very bigly. Upgrading the shower stall size is also very appreciated. Lots of bathroom stalls. More disabled access. I do have a couple recommendations: One is for a bicycle rack. I know PF had one at the Shops at Ithaca Mall, but I haven't notice one at the new facility--I may just be missing it. Would be awesome to ride bicycle back and forth during the summer. On a different note, reach out to TCAT and see if with all the new business at your new location, if they would consider adding a stop at this mall that loops through the whole lot, instead of dropping people off on the main road. (This mall has filled out, while TheShops@ just keeps dying. Also The Y has a bus stop, and they aren't even one of the cool kids) read more

Terrible gym. They'll tell you your membership is cancelled and then continue charging you. They took advantage of customers during a global pandemic and resumed everyone's accounts without telling anyone. Their untrained staff lie to customers and management refuses to intervene to clear up misunderstandings. They have horrible customer service too. Definitely rethink your decision to sign up (especially if it's with some sort of promotion, which will come with exorbitant hidden fees and sneaky clauses). read more

I like Planet Fitness. I used it for probably 12 years when I lived in Albuquerque, NM. My only beef with them was the stuff they used in the spray bottles to wash off the equipment. On the old bottles it said "don't get this on your hands!" Huh? How could you not if you're spraying it on a paper towel held by your hands. It's a chemical and well I stopped using it because it made my hands red and sore. I tried to contact them but was ignored. When we moved east we did check out the PF in our city but it was way too far form our home so we opted to use another gym. read more

I was planning to join Planet Fitness last month. I went early March to find the place flooded so I have to wait a week till they sort out their problems (btw nothing was posted online regarding the flood issue, so I have to waste my time driving there to find out that they are closed). Unfortunately, I returned back on the posted opening day HOPING to join the gym this time. Guess what, they could not make it happen! they needed a check! who still have or uses a check. Great Place to go, no matter what size body you have. The Staff is friendly; and they offer training on all equipment,and can help to design a workout plan that would work best for each individual. 5-6:00 am Planet Fitness is fairly empty, lots of machines available. 12noon - 3pm seems to be a busy time. Massage chair is cool too. Black card members are allowed to bring a friend for free every time they come. This is a cool feature of membership as well as the 50% off water/juice. Maybe a table and chair halfway back toward the back somewhere for resting, or for keeping your clipboard/pencil while on nearby equipment would be a good addition to the place too. Overall, this gym is great, especially for the price ($10.00 a month if you commit to a yearly membership). Pros: - Plenty of cardio machines, easy to get your workout in even in January when it's pretty busy - Clean. I come 5-6 times a week and I usually see them cleaning 3-4 times a week while I am there. -Helpful staff who will show you things if you ask. -More than enough lockers and a well designed locker room for efficiency. -Good variety of weight machines for total beginners to free weight area for those who are a little more advanced. - It is a positive environment where if I am trying a new machine or workout I never feel that others are laughing at me (even if they are). What could be better: - Bathroom is not super well maintained. Sometimes I have to go when I come after work and it's not super pleasant. - I'm not sure who is in charge of this but it would be awesome if there were at least a mix of dual arc trainers and arc trainers instead of just arc trainers- the dual arc trainers are such a better workout and very different. Maybe even replace some of the elliptical machines for these? - the mat area is pretty small, especially during peak hours. If you took away the cage and instead made the pretty huge lobby area available for mat work, you could easily put those tables that are currently in the huge area in the current mat area and I wouldn't have to stretch and do ab work within centimeters of other people. Edit: just had to add that they now have free wifi, which really improves my gym going experience! read more

I really LOVE this gym! After living in NYC I have truly come to appreciate places like PF. Most gyms in NYC are very gross (on many levels)-- However, at PF the gym was always very clean, the equipment in great condition and the staff very friendly. Around holidays PF does fun give aways for the members. Some days they even have free food! Sure there are some times during the week (usually around 5:30 Mon-Thurs) where it can be rather busy. However there is never a wait for equipment. For a nice venue, great equipment, and friendly staff-- PF is the place to work out at! As for haters of the infamous lunk alarm... its really not that bad. Basically a scam, they promised me that my membership was canceled. Some young employee who didn't know what he was doing assured me I wouldn't be charged and had me sign a note stating that I wanted it cancelled. however I was charged an additional annual fee and the manager was very unpleasant and unhelpful even though I was misled by her staff member. They take your bank account info so you have very little power to stop it besides closing your account. If you have to use it pay in cash don't give them your bank details!!!!! read more

I went here for about 2 years, mainly because it was cheap, close to home, and open 24 hours. But there are some ongoing problem, and the new management is rude and unhelpful. For example, all of the fans point at one row of cardio equipment, which is all the same kind of machine; if I want to use a different kind machine, I can't get enough ventilation and overheat. It wasn't always this way, and I asked to have one of the fans moved back to the front row. I was put off multiple times, then told it would happen, then it never did. The attitude I got was "don't bother me." A couple of the machines need maintenance, but when I mentioned this to the staff they were indifferent and nothing got fixed. TV channels got messed up and not fixed for a while, sound was bad, etc. I finally canceled my membership, bad attitude of the management bothered me most. read more

This is the worst gym I have ever been a member of. Customer service is awful and shady. Talk to you like your five years old. They don't allow up front payments for the year unless they are running a "special", which means they force you into a monthly payment with your checking account. Then they charge you an annual fee of 40 dollars that they don't inform you of when you sign up. They don't allow trial gym days. They don't allow guest passes unless you pay a 20 dollar daily use fee or are brought in by a black member. The staff is incompetent college kids who do nothing but play on their phones. This is literslly all I ever see at the gym when I'm there. The only good thing I can say is that the equipment is in good condition and they are 24 hrs. For someone who is new to Ithaca for work and can only work out later in the day or at late nights, there aren't alot of options in the area. I have been a member of planet fitness before in other states and locations, but this is by far the worst. I'm just glad I can go there, put my headphones in, get my workout done, and leave as quickly as possible. Would not recommend if there are other options available. read more
