The amount of 'stuff' you will find here is amazing. We like to stop and browse when we are in town. On our last stop the variety of items that our group bought included: a couple packages of sunflower seeds to plant in the garden, a vial of gold souvenir, a ceramic fondue set, a hammer w/ a variety of screwdrivers inside the handle, & a selection of novelty note pads. The variety of things that we didn't buy but had fun looking at included: a 8 foot (or so) chimes, funny hats to try on, squirrel feeders made with a seat for the squirrel, all kinds of tools, kitchenware and gift items. We come here often because the people are so great and their inventory is amazing - everything from mosquito dunks to empanada makers to single screws and bolts. It's an old fashioned hardware store where you can buy small quantities not sealed up in impossible to open plastic. The staff always know where things are and what would be the perfect tool or item for your problem. They hold hard to find items for me or special order them. They give advice on the best tool for sharpening garden tools. They've MADE me custom made items like a scoop for cleaning my chicken coop when I wanted a scoop with holes larger than the standard kitty litter scoop so Albert made me one with a plastic scoop and hardware cloth. This is absolutely my favorite general store where I know I will probably find what I need for household and gardening needs. read more

I have been coming to Placerville hardware since I was a kid. They have the cutest stuff but also the hardware department type things. The people who work at Placerville hardware are so nice, neighborly and just good people. Today I stopped in and everyone was as nice and sincere as I remember. Stopped here on the way back from Tahoe....I stop here whenever in the area cuz I can find stuff that one can only dream about where cooking implements and kitchen gidgets are concerned. Hardware is a misnomer-really! My last trip found some gaskets for my Ikea Espresso maker and a blue glass 2 cup measurer. There are aisles and aisles of tea stuff, hearth stuff, garden stuff, bird stuff, home and kitchen things that you won't find anywhere else and just, well, stuff. Where they sell everything from dish ware to kid's toys. And it's been around FOREVER. This is a great place to get those hard to find objects. I was looking for a cherry pitter a couple years ago and couldn't find one in other stores I went to, but Placerville Hardware had several different models to choose from. This is the type of store your grandparents or great-grandparents would have shopped in for household items. It's wonderful! Don't forget to look up! One of my most favorite items I purchased from here was hanging from the wall about 4 feet above my head. With so much to see, plan to spend some time here. I love this store. In addition to being a great little, local hardware store, they have so many great things to look at! A huge kitchen section full of specialty tools and gadgets and knick-knacks and whatsits! I love it. Okay, I never thoughts I'd write a yelp review about a hardware store but these people deserve the positive recognition. I'm assuming other people have already talked about the cool building they are in, how old they are, and the huge selection of stuff they have at decent prices. What I want to talk about is the service they gave when there was a problem. My 12 year old son bought a cap gun and some caps there a bit over a week ago. When we got back home to Reno the caps didn't fit. Even when we cut them so they were narrower the whole thing just didn't work well. We emailed the owners and even though it was our fault (we bought the wrong type of caps for that particular gun) they went out of their way, at a cost to them, to make it right. It is so easy to get caught up looking for the best price, and it has to be challenging for a business like them as they compete against online and big box. However, for me, recognizing their prices are already reasonable, they just took price out of the equation. I feel like next time I go there I should buy something just because. Agreed - I want everything in this store. It's the oldest store in California I think. One of the employees gave my fiance a tour of the store with complete history lesson. We LOVED it. They even had straps for our own make shift ski/snowboard boot gadget for slinging the things over your shoulder or backpack and they had my mason jars for granola. That is what everyone is getting this year. It was a wonderful store. I will stop there after tahoe just to hang out and walk around from now on! Placerville Hardware is the best store in the region. I go there all the time and spend a lot. I prefer to give them my business than go to either of the two big box places we have in town. They always have what you need or can help you do what you need to do with something they have in stock. They will order any thing you can not find, too. but that doesn't happen too often. What a great store, not just a hardware store!!! It's been around for over 160+ years, and with every visit i discover something new, something I hadn't seen on previous visits... While every employee in the store is friendly, helpful, and extremely competent; my favorite employees are Sid & Darlene, two sisters that are very witty and fun, and that is in addition to the attributes stated above. I love shopping here, and makes my visits to downtown well worth the trip---I always find something to buy, whether it's something I need, or just want... Placerville hardware has always been where you go when you need something and aren't sure where to find it. The staff here has found or ordered many things I have needed over the years. I do not stop here just for the necessities, but I do the bulk of my Christmas shopping here as well. I can ALWAYS find something for my adult siblings birthdays, and cannot say enough about the selection of bird feeders. Cooking tools and gadgets are a passion of ours and Pville Hardware never fails to have the latest and greatest. My son is 13 and is learning that whatever he needs for fixing things is found at Pville Hardware. We are No. 1 fans and will always be. I know it's a tourist stop, but even as a local I love this store! It's probably my favorite stop on Main Street, so much to see and such a charming set up, a great mix of old gold rush charm and new merchandise. The place has character, though the prices are tourist trap high. The cool old plank floors give the store such personality. I could wander this store every week (I get in once a month or so), and never get bored. Very cool stop, would recommend it to anyone passing through Hangtown. read more
