Did you know the oldest hardware store west of the Mississippi is in the town of Placerville, CA? Well now you do! It is right on Main Street and is in the same building since 1852. It is an actual hardware store. Yup, step right in to purchase a hammer, light switch, plunger, sprinkler heads, ant bait, and kitchen utensils ... all the practical hardware stuff. Plus they sell gold pans, gifts, and souvenirs (the fun and impractical) and they have a couple of pressed penny machines. The place is packed ceiling to floor with merchandise. The staff are friendly and get this... knowledgeable. Got a plumbing issue, question about using a wood screw vs nail.... they have folks that can assist. As you walk around, check out the original hardwood floors, wood counter, brick wall, rolling wall ladder, and wood filing drawers behind the counter. They are all original. Here is a bit of history, the building was built in 1850. The hardware store opened in 1852. Through the years until to the present day, it has always been a functioning hardware store serving the local community. I wish I was able to take more pictures inside but they did not allow it. They literally have any and everything you can think of. We love history so of course hubby and I were talking to one of the workers. She was very nice and informative about this historical place. Buyer beware. I tried to return a hummingbird feeder that I had filled with hummingbird food and used for a couple of days. The feeder did not attract hummingbirds, so I decided to return the feeder and exchange it for another. I was told by the clerk that I could not return the item because it was used. I returned the item clean and in excellent condition. I even returned the tag attached to the feeder in excellent condition. If I cannot return any items that I buy in this store, I will not bother to do any more shopping in the future at that store. read more

Not your typical hardware store, because whoever is in charge of filling the shelves with products is a genius. There's something for everyone. Imagine a checkout line at a Target or Best Buy filled with impulse-buy items only at a much larger scale and with high quality goods. We intended to window shop and ended up spending a hundred bucks by the time we were done. All of the employees were genuinely kind and just made you feel welcome. I grew up in Placerville, and while visiting last Sunday morning, my husband and I were having a coffee at Totem. Our 12 yr old went to look for a toy (the toy store being closed now) at Placerville Hardware. He returned within 5 minutes and said he walked in, a worker looked at him and asked if parents were with him, he said no, and was asked to leave. Really, Placerville Hardware? Even when I lived there I was drawn inside, for no shopping reason. Maybe it's the history. Maybe it's the unknown of what find I will find. It's not all nails and screws and such. It's part hardware and part everything-ware. Complete with uneven creeky wood floor and original wooden nail bins. Floor to ceiling stuff. I can't even begin to list what's stored here. Browse the pics and you'll get the idea. When walking historic Main St in Placerville, you can help but wander in. Who knows what you may walk out with. Service is hit and miss. Oh my gosh. I spent sooo much money here. This hardware store has been around since the miner '49er days and is still making their money off selling gold panning supplies and whatnot to tourists. Point in fact, I wanted everything. I bought classifiers, a 5 gallon bucket, a new gold pan, some post cards, a souvenir T-shirt of the hardware store(!), postcards, and a few vials to hold all the gold I was going to get. I even came back the next day because something was broken and they exchanged it for a new one no problem. I saw the place on the Huell Howser Placerville episode, and it did not disappoint. It's a real store, which honors its hardware roots serving the community and also serves the needs of the tourists and travelers. Very old school. I felt like the miners as it became my go to place in Placerville for supplies. read more

Everything imaginable is crammed into this historic business from gold mining tools, rope, garden stuff, hardware, unique kitchen and cleaning items...the list goes on forever. This place is a must stop if you're just enjoying a day visiting downtown Placerville because of all of its trinkets, but it also serves as a full functioning hardware store, too. It may be small, but they sure do pack a lot of inventory in there. Is it cramped? yes, very much so, it would be the only reason to knock a star off, but I personally think that adds to the charm of the place. You can go in everyday for a week and find something new that you haven't seen before. It has all kinds of kitchen gadgets, too...stuff that isn't necessarily big box normal stock either. In fact i think they have a better selection than the shwancy high priced place further down the street. Plus you have the old rustic hardwood floors, which is truly the essence of Placerville's fine history. When we had the last big storm in December, 2009, this was one place you could count on being open. They drove through the snow and operated with no power because they knew people would need supplies, heaters, etc. Even though the owner was running around like a madman trying to get the back of the store closed off (lets face it, it's a tripping hazard back there in the dark) he took a minute to stop and give me some advice on my flashlight purchase, and gave honest advice about a heater purchase to a woman there too. I like knowing that the staff of an establishment isn't just pushing for the the highest price good, but more so interested in meeting their customers needs. I appreciated that they took down credit card information the old fashioned way because they new a lot of people needed things, but with the power being out, they couldn't run them. This is one of those places that reminds us that Placerville is not only a town, it is a community. Support local businesses, its worth the extra pennies. read more

I was going to just stop at the locally owned Sears store in Placerville but I decided to check in here first and I found a lot of negative Yelp reviews about that particular Sears store and it's new owners so I decided to stop at True Value Hardware. I came in to the store to find a small gift for a friend. I found the starwars section and picked up a chewbacca mug, walked around the store, and found a cool yeti mug. I put the chewbacca mug back. All of a sudden a woman comes rushing out the back, THE WOMAN YELLED AT ME TO EMPTY MY POCKETS! I did with my wallet and car keys. She claims she saw me on the camera put something in my sweater pocket. I basically stripped for her and asked her to check my pockets! She tries to apologize and says it happens often after 5pm. This is a historic shop with everything from silver polish to a redneck wine glass. It has the majority of hardware basics but the collection of other kitchy stuff is its real selling point. I just love this place! This is like an old time hardware store complete with this old fashion thing called CUSTOMER SERVICE! Let me give you an example: today I called looking for a particular nut. Bridget, the women I spoke to wasn't familiar with this item (neither was I when I called) but wrote down the information and went to look. After talking about it, she and I came to the conclusion she did not have what I needed. To make a long story short, she went OUT OF HER WAY to use her caller ID to call me back with additional information....after all, she looked up the part online, did some more checking and found they did indeed have what I needed!! WHO DOES THAT? Apparently, Bridget does, obviously they train their people well! They also have a fantastic section of unique items that I like purchasing for gifts as well. Everyone is always friendly and upbeat. I like spending my money where I feel appreciated!
