We decided to stop by on a Sunday to get an afternoon bite before running some errands and wow are we glad we did. The service was great but the food was even better. While ordering, I had mentioned that we were just going to split the Hot Italian Beef with cheese and a small pizza. When the hot italian beef came out, she had already split it for us AND gave us our own au jus and giardiniera. I also had asked for extra and its like she knew that it was my favorite. I'm from the Chicago area, so I'm grateful for Pizza Man when I'm craving my favorite Chicago classic: a big wet Italian Beef Sandwich with Giardinera. This place hits the spot. I'm just upset that it took me six years in KC until I tried their Italian Beef Pizza. Oh my gosh. I had Italian beef pizza at Rosati's back home, and that was very good. Pizza Man's Italian beef pizza, however, was perfection. They even gave us tubs of gravy with it so we could dip the pizza like a sandwich - genius. It's hard to tell from the photos, but there's a generous layer of giardiniera under plenty of beef and cheese, and a nice crispy crust. This is easily one of my favorite pizzas ever. The only con is that the place is decorated with too much Cubs stuff (go Sox), but the beef makes up for it. read more

Whenever I'm craving a Chicago hot dog, this is where I go. A hot dog on a poppy seed bun with onions, relish, mustard, sports peppers, tomatoes, and a pickle spear, the combination is so good. I also tried their italian beef sandwich and that was also pretty solid. Flavorful beef and cheese on a bread roll with dipping sauce and giardiniera. I would definitely get it again. read more

We walked in to order and the owner was extremely rude. She mumbled something under her breath about not understanding our lingo when we asked a standard english question. We waited outside for our order and she waved us in when it was ready. We apologized for anything that may have caused such a nasty attitude. She immediately changed tunes and said no you're fine and then started to make small talk. You would think small businesses would be grateful for customers especially at time like this. After getting home with our food we realized the food was just as bad as the service. It doesn't hold a candle to Chicago. Save yourself the disappointment. read more

We live close by and since this restaurant has no beer/wine etc. we complete our meal experience in our kitchen. During weekends I've seen two people working there. It's a very small restaurant. If you're a chili dog fan you found the right place. Always hot & fresh, great taste in chili. Not the prettiest or biggest restaurant you'll find, but perfect to grab a quick bite to eat or carry out. Would recommend calling ahead for carry out as everything is made at point of order & it may take a second to get it. I've driven past this place probably a thousand times over the years but had never stopped. I'm kicking myself for all the amazing food that I've missed out on. I got the Italian Beef Sandwich which came with giardiniera and a cup of au jus. Just a little under $10. The serving size was great (to the point of overflowing the hoagie bun) and the au jus was amazing. I saved what I didn't use with the sandwich for future consumption. Service was fast and super friendly. My first time there today will definitely not be my last. read more

How did I get so lucky to have class for 21 weeks in Lenexa and be right up the street from the pizza man? Of course I had to try the Italian beef dipped with spicy giardiniera. I would say this is one of the best Italian beefs in Kansas City! I've only eaten Italian beef at 3 places and one of them is closed so I will go on and say this is probably the best I've had to date since Mo's Italian Eatery closed. Gathered the crew and headed out to see what that fuss was about. Small place... pretty cramped. Not suggested for groups of more than 4 because you may not be able to sit together on a busy day. The gera (miah was a bullfrog) whatever was what set it aside from other beef sandwich places ... it was missing something even under all those pickled veggies and au jus. Not often am I able to find the perfect solution to a random craving in KC. Insert: Authentic Italian beef sandwiches - complete with giardiniera (a spicy relish) and au jus gravy... A total winner that would make any Chicago native proud. Stopped at PM for a late lunch with Jamie, and scored a couple o chicago dogs and a 'za. Quality of both were still excellent (although the dog was not piping hot, served rather at a tepid temp), with each dish perfectly balanced and composed with quality ingredients. I love Pizza Man! The ambiance here is family borderline grating, with loud pinball machine noises as the only soundtrack. Not a date place, or a joint to make a good first impression. Let me start by saying I am a Chicago transplant. I lived in Chicago well into my adult life before moving. The city, not some suburb, in the city. That being said I am very particular about food claiming to be authentic. So today I put it to the test and I was very pleased. I went Dog, beef, and pie. The dog was a Vienna Beef, so it's hard to go wrong from that. All the toppings were correct including the sport peppers and relish. So, Vienna Beef, relish, sport peppers (the real Chicago difference) made it authentic to me. It tasted just like a local hot dog joint. Oh, it was on a poppy seed. I have no complaint. The beef, without getting into a Portillos, Dukes, Mr. Beef, Al's, whatever your spot is argument it was good. It was a Turrano/Gonnella bread (the bread makes the difference we all agree) and the beef was from the Vienna people. 9/10 times of you hit a corner place for a beef, they have Vienna Beef Italian beef. It's delicious but it isn't going to be your favorite beef spots beef. But that's an argument Chicagoans have had for decades. It had proper hot giardiniera, proper bread, proper beef. It did not disappoint. It hit my crave spot. The pizza was great. It was nice and thin, crispy, fresh Italian sausage is my go to. Not pre cooked, fresh. The pizza tasted like any neighborhood pizzeria. The good stuff real people eat day to Day or grab a 99 cent slice of from Geo's when they get of the redline at Wilson. Now before some d bag tells me Deep dish is Chicago pizza I'll tell you to keep your opinion to yourself and have your wife drive you back to the suburbs in your Honda minivan with the side impact airbags. Or go back to your college campus with the whole four years of Chicago you've encountered. This is real day to Day pizza and it's exactly what the local guy makes, in fact your local guy doesn't even make deep dish because he's not feeding a tourist. The Pizza Man makes me want to move to Lenexa to be closer. I have never had ANYTHING bad from here. The pizza is great (Kitchen Sink); Italian Beef!, dogs...no complaints ever. The place could use a bit of a facelift inside, it's a bit scuffed and scratched around the edges, but still clean and comfy. I always drive right by it and have to turn around and go back because it hides in a little strip mall. Even though I know right where it is, I miss it everytime. Too bad they aren't open a little later, but considering their location, I'm sure lunch is what keeps them busy. read more

I first came across this place when I was searching for an authentic Chicago dog a few years ago. You know, the one with the sport peppers, green relish, etc. Since then I've enjoyed the pizza, Italian Beef sandwich (extra gravy? Yes please) and many others. Always delicious and friendly service. I'm embarrassed to admit that I have driven by this place a thousand times, thinking I don't need another pizza place. Call me a pizza snob. But upon seeing the "Check Please" episode on PBS, did I discover that they have a noteworthy Italian Beef Sandwich.....so my cohorts and I planned a Saturday visit. The Place was packed..I don't know if that is normal or if others saw the same show I did. parking is plentiful, the dining space is limited. We had a party of 5, luckily someone surrendered their table when we ordered. On the order today were thee Italian Sandwiches, A meatball sub, chili dog, and a small pizza just for the tasting. The Italians were fabulous, tender meat, perfectly seasoned. Au Jus on the side and a small serving of giardiniera for a little kick. It contained carrots, small cauliflower chunks, olives and Jalapenos, with a vinegar oil sauce. It had quite a little tongue warming effect but added a lot of flavor. The bread was perfect for absorbing the Au jus and tasted amazing all together. Cost was $6. I had opted for the Vitner's Louisiana Hot sauce potato chips, I had never seen these before. They had quite an afterburn on the tongue. My meal would have been perfect if we would have had an ice cold beer to wash it down. Sadly, it is not offered.....Maybe next time, its a to go order with the beer waiting in the cooler! The meat ball sub was toasted and had cheese baked on top, it seemed to be processed balls, not homemade but was still enjoyable. Accompaning here was the tangy triple cheese potato chips. Unique flavor..makes you thirsty, but worth a nod. The Chili dog at our table was the low point of the visit. Our friend that ordered it was obviously disappointed. Saying that it was okay, but Sonic offered about the same thing. The pizza was a "deluxe", and had a cracker thin crust, which is not a high point for me, but was flavorful and tasty. The sauce and cheese were very good, but had a little too many green peppers. So I picked them off...I do that a lot. If we had only gotten the Italian sandwiches the rating would be much higher, but as a whole only gets the 3. The pizza was appreciable, and if you like thin crust, it would be worth a try. But I would recommend the Italian...but be ready to taste it for the rest of the afternoon, for the light hearted stomach you may want to visit Walgreens ahead of time. You may ask the question, "How does a pizza joint that serves sandwiches get the same 5-star rating as some of the finest restaurants in town?" It's a fair question, but I want to point out that this place gets 5 stars for being the best at what it is meant to be. In other words, don't compare it to Capitol Grill or Peppercorn Duck Club. I haven't had the pizza yet, but my experience today was definitely "as good as it gets" for what this place is. As some have said before, I drive by this place all of the time. From the curb, it looks like just another mom & pop pizza joint. But this place really is something special! The staff was very friendly and attentive. They offered suggestions, and then the cook came out and asked if we had enjoyed our meal. I kept getting the feeling that they were like parents waiting for the kids to unwrap their presents. They definitely stand behind the quality of their product. We tried one of the Chicago dogs. This was my first time having one, and it was indeed the best hot dog I have ever eaten. I'm not a big fan of hot dogs, but this was gourmet! The bun was soft and fresh with poppy seeds. The garnishes were extremely flavorful - I'm talking about a taste explosion! And the actual hot dog was of great quality. We also had a Ruben and an Italian Beef sandwich. The Ruben was outstanding. It had really great cheese on it (Swiss), and the corned beef was tender and flavorful. The Italian Beef came with an au jus and peppers on the side. Again, fantastic flavor! With drinks for two and the sandwiches, we escaped for less than 20 bucks. So it's a great value. I will be heading back there soon - trust me! In fact, maybe before they close tonight!! The atmosphere was pretty standard; however, I will note that the chairs were VERY comfy. If you're not a Cubbies fan, just close your eyes and eat... Check this place out NOW if you have not yet...
