There's something suspicious about the reviews for Buenos Aires Restaurant in Shawnee. They're either glowing five-star praises or scathing one-star warnings. My experience leans toward the latter, though I'm giving it two stars solely because our server was kind and genuinely tried his best. I initially asked for a cocktail menu, having seen several drinks featured on their Facebook page. The waiter informed me they don't have a bar, had just gotten their liquor license, and could only make a drink if I provided a recipe. That was a red flag. He ended up calling the owner, who texted over a few recipes. At that point, we settled for sangria because I didn't feel comfortable letting someone wing a cocktail from memory. Then came the next blow: they were out of all steak items and all desserts. This was frustrating, especially after ordering a pitcher of sangria under the assumption we'd be enjoying a full meal. We ordered the "Taste of Argentina" to sample a variety. The first dish to arrive was an empanada and it was passable, but the filling was slightly cold, clearly reheated, likely in an air fryer. That was fine. Next came a plate with a basic ham and cheese sandwich, a small salad, and potato salad. The sandwich was generic, something you'd expect from a deli cooler, though the salad was fresh. The second plate was, frankly, inedible. Everything tasted like it had just come out of a microwave. The pizza was soggy, the chicken with cheese was flavorless, and another meat-and-cheese item had a strange, off-putting taste and again, cold in the center. The only remotely decent thing was a sausage sandwich, which was just okay. What baffles me is that it wasn't even busy. It was just one other table occupied, so there's really no excuse for this low level of quality. For a $40 sampler plate and a $40 pitcher of sangria, we received maybe $5 worth of food, both in taste and presentation. What a letdown this was. My parents had gone twice previously and enjoyed the food and, shall we say, interesting atmosphere so we did their wedding anniversary there as just a fun, interesting thing to do. But from the moment we walked in the vibe was strange. The owner wasn't there and while she should be able to take a day off, I don't think things are up to her standard when she's not there. First impression is it feels like an antique store, so crowded with furniture (could literally lose half the chairs and still be plenty full of furniture) that it's hard to maneuver around and the tables are jammed together. Maybe with the owner there, it has a warmer atmosphere, but there were just 2 people working and 3 other tables. So it just felt strange. Anyway, we came in and the waiter greeted us right away. My mom had made reservations which he seemed confused by but he sat us at a table with the reserved sign. The tablecloth was dirty under the placemats. You get paper napkins you'd use at home in a napkin holder so kind of a confusing concept (is it casual or fine dining?). Anyway, the waiter brought us waters right away and then that's where things got extra odd. It probably took 30 mins before he took our orders. It wasn't busy and food wasn't coming out of the kitchen at a crazy pace so not sure why there was such a wait. My mom had raved about the tastes of Argentina (ToA) so me and my fiance and my mom all got that and my dad got the choripan. The waiter said it may take a bit for the food to come out and would bring some empanadas to snack on and like 5 mins later he brought out the ToAs for the 3 of us and an empanada for my dad. Said the kitchen was faster than he expected. That plate set a very poor start to the meal. It was a barely dressed pile of spinach with 3 slices of tomato and 2 pieces of onion, a tea sandwich, a random roasted red pepper, a scoop of potato salad and a lukewarm empanada. The empanada was poorly reheated - it had cold cheese in the middle, which I assume was meant to be melty as the pastry was warmish. After about 10 mins, my dad's sandwich came out. It was just a spinach salad and the sandwich, which while big, didn't seem like a good deal for $30-some. Then our second plate of the ToA which was actively bad came out. It had a mini choripan, which was decent but it was literally a piece of sausage in bread with mustard and lettuce. And the 2 milaneses were gross. Both looked and tasted like they'd been leftovers from yesterday, reheated in the microwave. Same with the pizza. Tasted like yesterday's frozen pizza reheated in the microwave. I only ate half of the plate. Then it finished with a pretty good dessert plate, so I'll give them that. My impression of ToA is that they use leftovers to make it. They do a daily tea service and probably prep most of this stuff ahead and throw whatever there is extra of into the ToA. My mom said it's different every time she's there, which would explain the randomness of it all. I was so disappointed because I have read all the good reviews and even had them from my family and it was all so mediocre. If I were voting solely on the food, it'd be a 2. But we did have a nice waiter and I know the owner is hustling to make the business a success and I don't want to wreck her rating. But my advice would be to trim the menu down to like 3-4 apps, 5-6 entrees, and a couple of salads, things that are delicious and fresh. Currently she's doing too much: lunch, dinner, brunch, afternoon teas, tango dances, and a podcast, that's too much, especially when you are resorting to serving customers leftovers from those meals in the form of a mixed tastes dish. And it can't decide if it's high end or not. Change tablecloths between customers and give cloth napkins if you are going to use tablecloths, or just wipe down the tables in between customers and do the napkin dispensers. And just to put a finer point on it, if you can't do it all the way successfully, pare back until you can. Shorter, more focused menu can be prepared fresh for customers (get the microwave out of the kitchen). Remove furniture so it's a comfortable space, and not so crowded. Keep the place settings simple, and remove the huge sugar service from the tables when it's not tea time. Open less than a month, this place is the epitome of South American charm and hospitality. The owner Claudia greeted us the minute we walked in and suggested a big booth up front. She was quick to point out all the little nooks in the restaurant if patrons want to have a leisurely game of cards or chess. Before even looking at the menu, she suggested the Taste of Argentina option--an epic sampler plate of all of her favorites, including empanadas, chicken Milanese, Argentinian pizza and the list goes on. After the fifth course of small plates, we were all stuffed. But the food kept coming, including her homemade raviolis. She finished us off with a smattering of her homemade cakes and tortes. Best $35 I've ever spent. If you're in a hurry, this isn't the place for you. Everything is prepared to order, so our lunch was a leisurely two-hour culinary adventure. My steak was tough and quite flavorless, and my husband's chicken was a low quality chicken Parmesan that was raw in the middle. I took 5 of my family members over the weekend. They were not thrilled about getting out of the house, hangry, and kinda skeptical about trying Argentinian cuisine. Had dinner at Buenos Aires (Johnson Drive) with two friends on a Thursday. One of us had been previously. I had not. We were all amazed at how good the food was!! All three of us ordered the dinner sampler: appetizer sampler plate, entree sampler plate, and dessert sampler plate! It is literally 2-3 bites of the entire menu. Don't worry. They have boxes for leftovers. Claudia, the owner and chef, makes everything from scratch. The chicken empanadas with the buttery flaky pastry and scrumptious savory filling were amazing. We drove in from Lawrence to try this restaurant and were really looking forward to it. The ambiance was amazing, but that is the only positive thing I have to say about this place. After being seated at a table that was so close to the table next to us that the back of our chairs touched the whole time, we waited 15 minutes for the waiter to come to our table. Since their kitchen is wide open, we realized that the only two employees in the restaurant that evening were the waiter and the chef, who I saw licking her finger to taste something and continue making food. The waiter did not speak English and my friend had to go back and talk to the chef regarding a question he had about the menu. I ordered the tea service and instead of coming on a tier full of "assorted finger sandwiches, tartlets, hors D'oeuvres, and pastries", it came on two small plates with 3 of the same finger sandwiches that looked like they were on Wonder bread, a piece of stale pound cake, and two more small pastries. The kicker was that they never even brought me TEA! My friends were STILL waiting on their food after 90 minutes of being seated, which is when we decided to leave. We offered to pay for the drink my friend had and my poor excuse for tea service, but since the waiter did not understand what we were saying, we went back to tell the chef why we were leaving. A two star rating is pushing it! We had a Wednesday night 6:30 p.m. reservation for 4 people and we were seated at a table for 8, next to another noisy table for 8. The rest of the restaurant was empty. It was obvious that a table had not been prepared for us in advance. We asked to be moved but were told the other tables were set up for 3 not 4. Finally two tables were scooted together by the server. It was a train wreck from that point on. The wine we selected was not available because they hosted a party the night before. There was only 1 steak left to be had because they had hosted a party the night before. Regrettably, I had that 1/2" over-cooked steak, swimming in a plate of wine. It was not a filet mignon as noted on the menu. The Merlot Sauce consisted of a steak sitting in the middle of the plate in a puddle of Merlot. The server had trouble delivering it because there was nothing thick about it - definitely NOT a sauce. The house salads had no apparent dressing on them. Everyone else's food was average at best. I, too, think there is something very suspicious about the 4-5 star ratings on this site. We will not spend another $100 for below-average experience/food. read more

Stopped in tonight for the first time. Tried the empanadas which were delicious. The dough was flakey and not dry. Then we tried the Matilda chocolate cake and the deuce de leche cheesecake. I told the owners son it was the best chocolate cake I have tasted. It was moist and the flavors were exceptional. Most restaurants over bake their cakes and they are dry. Not here they do it right so don't skip dessert. They cheesecake was also delicious and very creamy. We will definitely be back to try more things on the menu. A beautiful jewel box of a room. Walls covered with artwork. Somehow both cozy and luxurious at the same time. All due to the generous delightful nature of Claudia. She makes and personally shares her excellent food with great love and care. The tasting menu was delivered in courses, each delicious item was described, and boxes were provided early, knowing so much more was to come. A final dessert plate filled with assorted treats, enough to need another small box to take home. This is, by far, my new favorite restaurant. Going here is like a lovely evening in an international restaurant. The hospitality is so warm, the food is excellent (and so much of it!)and we had a great time. There were a few minor service issues, but they were more than made up for. We had the special meal that included empanadas, unlimited soft drinks (they don't have a liquor license, but you can bring wine), a tea tower loaded with small pastries and sandwiches, entree, side and choice of large home-made dessert. There were so many leftovers (especially from the tea tower) that we were encouraged to take home. It was all so good and an excellent value. The owner is lovely and so very welcoming. read more
