I'm a big fan of Mr. D's. This mom and pop has been open for a long time in Shawnee and I love the sense of nostalgia you get when stopping in here. It's located in an unassuming strip mall and the inside feels very retro - like it's been this way forever, in a good way. Over the last five years or so I've enjoyed watching Mr. D's grow as the ownership changed to a young family and they embraced community in a new way. You can now find their donuts all over town as they collaborate with other local businesses and sell at farmer's markets around the metro. Despite gaining in notoriety this local spot remains humble and still has some of the kindest people working at this OG spot in Shawnee. Each donut is great - I personally think their apple fritter and classic cake donuts are some of the best. They also offer mochi now, which is a fun unique offering you can't get all over town. One of the best things about Mr. D's is despite being one of the best donuts in town they still keep costs reasonable - you're not going to break the bank going here and I love that they are doing their best to keep great treats affordable for families in their neighborhood. read more

Donuts is in the name and absolutely get a donut but the drink menu here is also amazing. They have alternative milk options, many syrups, seasonal coffees, and teas. Of course they also have many donut option, I have tried the cake donuts, the long John and the cinnamon rolls which have all been amazing but I will need to return to try more of the menu. One of my favorite local donut shops in KC! They're the only one in town that sells mochi donut (that I'm aware of). Only on Saturday's though! I live about ~40 mins from Mr. D's so by the time I get there all the delicious donuts are sold out. Luckily they allow you to pre-order in advance so I was able to get my mochi donuts!! So I know people have very particular tastes and thoughts about donuts, but I cannot say how good these donuts were (and bonus, the service was AMAZING). Not being a native KC person, I was in search of a place to get donuts to take to one of my classes. I found Mr. D's and saw the lovely reviews, and had to try them out! Turns out this location is right near a friend's place, and it was super convenient to then get to JCCC afterwards--so if I wasn't already sold, I am now! When you walk in, you can tell it's a place that people love. I got there around 7 am and there were already a bunch of people in there eating donuts, having coffee, and reading the paper. So, if you need a place for those endeavors, go no further. Wish I could have stayed and chilled! When I got up to the counter, the person who helped me was super patient (you know, it can be overwhelming to be in a new place and ordering!). He told me what the common eats were and the ones he suggested. I ended up getting a mix of yeast and cake donuts that were fresh as heck. Bonus, if you expect to get a lot of dozens of donuts for work or what have you, they have a punch card! Buy 10 dozen, get a dozen free! So there's that. They do sell out fast, so come early! We came around 10 and they still had a good selection but they were out of a lot of their cake donuts. Okay so they've been around since 1975 and the donuts here slap my mouth silly on how good they are! I got an assortment since it was my first time and couldn't resist. They have classic yeast-raised, cake, fritters, and twists. For sure could have eaten the whole case. It's 6:30 a.m. on a Saturday morning and where am I? Standing in line at Mr. D's trying to decide if it's poor form to get an entire dozen donuts every time I set foot in the place. (See also: I don't care if it's poor form) My husband will kill for their apple fritters, and with good reason: they're enormous and they have the perfect ratio of apple bits to cinnamon and sugar. My daughter, on the other hand, must have the Honey Dip -- so light and airy they seem like they can't possibly be real! I'm in town for a race and this place had good ratings and was on my way from the airport to packer pickup. I came around 10:45am on a Friday. Not a huge selection left, but I got the long John and cinnamon twist. The lady was nice enough. They came in a fun box - probably the highlight of the experience. The donuts were both pretty dry and had SO much dough. They did not taste fresh at all and I threw most of them away. Why waste so many calories on subpar donuts?! I was pretty disappointed. So 2 stars for the taste of the donuts, 5 stars for the box and the price [cheap compared to Chicago or any other big city]. read more

I've now ventured to the Overland Park Farmer's Market twice this spring, just for a taste of Mr. D's mochi donuts. I. Love. Mochi. Donuts!! The chew factor is just pure bliss. You can only get them at a couple places around here (the other is Blackhole Bakery) and Mr. D's sells them at the Saturday market. I've tried a few flavors and my favorites are the raspberry and the chocolate. I also tried their apple fritter and it was the best I've had with a perfect combination of spices and fruit. I definitely recommend getting to the market early if you want the mochi donuts, like around 8:30, and don't be afraid to ask where their booth is because the signage is not prominent! read more

I'm good for donuts about once a year, and I really wanted to try this spot after learning about them, following them on IG, and having FOMO of missing out on the experience of a great, local, classic donut shop. I had the week of Thanksgiving off and took my *very* excited kiddo in for a quick pick up. According to their IG, they list a number you can call or text and I thought of doing that for curbside, but also didn't know what all was available and wanted to see for myself. They offer sanitizer and are requiring masks, so I figured a quick pop in couldn't hurt. We got there about 10 a.m., which is super late in the Donut Shop Timezone. Naturally, things were pretty picked over, but it was a resounding success because: 1) My kiddo got her donut with sprinkles, that's all that mattered to her. 2) We got to experiment with their classics like the Honey Dip, Buttermilk, and my lowkey fav, a glazed blueberry cake donut. 3) I get paralyzed by too many choices, so they took the legwork out of it for me. Now I'd be lying if I could tell you what a Honey Dip donut is, but to me it is essentially their take on a glazed donut. Puffy, airy and delicious. The glazed blueberry cake was straightforward; sweet, dense and the blueberry flavor shined through. The winner of all was the Buttermilk donut -- who knew those existed? Probably everyone, but it was new to me. They seem simple in their cake covered crimpy, glossy glaze but have an insane amount of flavor. Really enjoyed this one. They assure me the case is more stocked on the weekends, but for the time we came, it all worked out well. My waistline belies my love for the circular breakfast fare known as the donut, and this is a local small business getting it done right. Shawnee for the win, here. Facing south along 75th, just past Nieman is Mr D's, and you might miss it if you're not looking for it. Donuts aplenty line the racks behind the counter and the specialty (read: bigger & somewhat fancier) selections are in the glass case at toddler eye-level. The 'honey-dipped' is a reference to your traditional glazed fare, and there is no shortage of options after that. I suggest the cinnamon roll, which is about the size of a spare tire, and balances the right combo of cinnamon to sweetness. A dozen donuts runs you $10, and this is totally a fair price point. These are not factory-churned donuts, they are hand-crafted rings of happiness, each lovingly adorned with just the right toppings. Add in the fact that they (proudly) serve Messenger coffee (repping more of KC!) and you have the perfect accompaniment to start your day. There is often a short line when we come on a Saturday morning but the line moves fast. The staff always has a bright smile despite how busy they get. read more
