As I venture further into consulting and meet with more people, I'm less interested in simply asking, "Is this a good coffee shop?" and more interested in, "Who is this place good for?" I came to Prairie specifically looking for somewhere to collaborate. Good tables, enough room to spread out papers, sit across from someone, compare laptops and actually have a conversation without feeling like you're taking over the entire coffee shop. Urban Prairie absolutely fits that bill. What I wasn't expecting was how much more there was to it. There's a game store attached, which was such a cool surprise, plus another room with larger tables that would be even better for brainstorming or working with a small group. Then right in the middle you still get that classic cozy coffee shop atmosphere people actually want. Some people need a quiet corner and headphones. Some need a place to catch up with a friend. Some of us show up with two laptops, papers everywhere and ideas to work through. Urban Prairie gives you options for all three. I'm going to keep trying different coffee shops around KC with that mindset because sometimes the best review isn't whether a place is "good." It's whether it's the right place for what you need that day.

I ordered from their seasonal menu (in Fall it's a must) and got the Apple Butter Latte over ice. I also got a sweet treat! All their baked goods are from Aurora Bakery, so a great partnership. They also have quiche and turkey sandwiches, but it's a popular quick lunch for people so don't be surprised if they sell out on you! Lastly, the woman working was a lovely. I was bit extra hesitant as I knew from reading reviews that this place was a bit off the beaten path, and as I routed myself there and found my car meandering through a suburban office parking lot maze I became even more nervous about my plan to work from here. All of that being said, once I got close to the coffeeshop itself I saw a sign clearly visible from the lot which was my first breath of relief. The signage is spectacular for a fairly hidden spot. Yes, you need to know it's here, but you will find it rest assured! If you don't see the sign keep hunting. The nice thing about it being in an office park is that there is ample parking. I was able to park and walk right in. The inside is modern but inviting, and at 9am I was able to have my pick of the tables. The day I was there was nice and I had my laptop so I went outside to their patio. I worked out there for about an hour and when I came inside to take a video call it was packed! I was able to snag a table and purchased a sparkling water before using their wifi (which was great!). Now to the coffee - I had a dirty chai and it was honestly wonderful. No notes. The baristas were friendly and overall I had a great time. Adding this to my list of great work spots in JOCO.

Since it was such a nice day, I decided to sit outside. My first sip immediately stood out because of the texture. It was probably the smoothest coffee I've ever had; silky, creamy, and almost pillowy on the tongue. Unfortunately, that's where most of my praise ends. The coffee itself tasted fine, but nothing about the flavor stood out, especially considering the price. I ordered a vanilla latte, but I couldn't taste any vanilla at all and got virtually no sweetness from the drink. Overall, it's not bad coffee by any means, and the texture was genuinely impressive. But for nearly $9, I expected a lot more flavor. I don't regret trying it, but I wouldn't come back at that price point.
