You are definitely paying premium for your drink but especially the baked goods as their bread is all made in house by Ibis Bakery. Now more than one barista helped me review the massive menu. Payton ended up taking my order: CBS with MIXED GREENS, MATCHA TEA and a MUDSLIDE made with SOY MILK! The space is very large with multiple seating areas, quiet corners, plenty of open dining and enclosed room dining as well. It has a walkthrough to the bakery side along with mini store selling cups, Messner Farms merchandise and more. Now I really enjoyed my CBS: marinated chicken, bacon, red onion, cheddar cheese, tomato and chipotle mayo on brioche potato roll.. sounds pretty good huh! It was devine! Those combined ingredients made for one of the best chicken sandwiches hot or cold (because I could finish it in one sitting) I've had! Now I picked at the chicken solo and it didn't have too much flavor but as a sandwich everything comes together well! I wasn't too impressed with the Mudslide.. it was dreary, no hit of chocolate or creme so I'm not sure what it was supposed to be. My mom said the match with honey syrup was decent. It has been the one of the most comforting and clean spaces with a calm, cozy and inviting vibe. They have served consistently good coffee and always have tasty bakery products like breads, cakes, croissants to offer, all fresh and satisfying!!! I always go for the cafe caramello coffee with oat milk and their sugar free syrups of vanilla and caramel. Also, I always love pairing it with rich flaky and golden almond croissant filled with almond compote inside for crunchy moist flavor. Apart from these options, they have a lot more drinks, food options to offer. This is a perfect for relaxing, meeting friends, or just enjoying some quiet time. I wasn't sure what I'd order despite me having looked at the menu prior to arrival, but I purchased the avocado toast, (the bread is thick, but it's not dense, so it was okay, though I'd have preferred it thinner, it didn't detract from the overall flavor), and Fall Specialty Coffee, Horchata Crème Brûlée. Both were delicious! Service was excellent! We opted to sit outside since the morning temps allowed us to do so, and it wasn't too crowded when we gathered. I've heard rave reviews of Black Dog from friends for years, and I finally had a chance to stop in today - I can't believe I've slept on this coffee shop for so long! They have a great menu with something for everyone - coffee, espresso drinks, teas and more. I opted for a specialty drink, an iced Snickers latte, and ohmygoodness it was AMAZING. I'm hooked! I generally wait after visiting a couple times to write a review and Black Dog has been consistent each time. The absolute ONLY negative about this place is how packed it gets, which is only showing how great they are, but hard when you go to work. Most of the coffee shops around only offer a couple pastry options with coffee, but not here. There are full sandwiches, toast options, salads, cakes, there is something for everyone. Today, I needed a good breakfast and ordered the Sunrise Sandwich and a Caramel Latte. The lattes are smooth and a perfect blend of bitter vs sweet. The sandwich was just what I needed, something with protein that wasn't sweet. There are tables scattered all over, some having outlets and some do not, which does make it hard when there are so many people. Overall, this is one of the best coffee shops in the KC area for food and quality of coffee. read more

Wow! Convenience and quality are the two words I would use to describe Black Dog Coffeehouse. I am a huge fan of being able to order my coffee in advance, especially when it's a new place and I don't know how busy it will be. When I got there, the place is spacious and very nicely designed. The barista was helpful when I asked where online pickup was. When another employee saw me struggling to grab all of my items she showed me where the drink holders were. I decided to enjoy my burrito on site. I love breakfast burritos, but it is so hard to find them around here with my two favorite ingredients: Chorizo and potatoes. They put both in theirs! I also loved their verde salsa, though it does seem to have some sort of sauce in the burrito already. I went on a Sunday morning so it wasn't busy, I've heard it can get crowded during peak times. I would say to pick an off time to go visit it for the first time, you won't regret it! read more

I have been to Blackdog a few times before and have had positive experiences. For a coffee shop that serves Messenger coffee and Ibis baked goods they should have the same standards as Messenger. I ordered a cappuccino that should be a standard 6oz. They made it into a 8oz which is just diluting the coffee with extra milk. I could have dealt with that but the espresso was so bitter. It is clear that the barista staff is untrained and just pumping out coffee orders. This location needs to slow down and do some quality control. Will not be returning for coffee. read more

Went here in the morning before I had to meet a client. The only negative that I could find was this place is BUSY!! When I arrived there was a line of about 6 people in front of me. Line wasn't super long time wise. Drinks came out fairly quickly and had great flavor. I had ordered a breakfast sandwich and it was very good, the bread was light and fluffy. I ended up getting one of the last seats at the time. The whole time I was there people were coming and going at the counter, not a lot of seat opened up. If you are looking for a place to site and chat while you drink your coffee this would be a great place. If you are looking for a place to site and work, this place is a fairly loud and extremely busy. They also have fresh bread that you can buy at the counter however I didn't buy any so I can't say what the flavors were like. read more

So good I came back 2x in one week. Tried the honey lavender latte and the mudslide latte and both very very smooth and tasty. Not bitter at all! The staff is super accommodating and helpful despite always being busy. I tried a sample of their jalapeño cheese popper and it was an Amazon price of bread, perfect for a sandwich! I tried a little bit of their sunrise sandwich, biscuits and gravy, and their cranberry toast with almond butter and all came out made nicely, prepared beautifully, and tasted amazing. Some of our go-tos are the sunrise sandwich, any of the toast offerings (all are good - always fun when there is a a seasonal option), and the biscuits and gravy. The place is almost always packed, especially during peak hours. There is a varity of seating available, but grabbing a table can be tricky when it's busy. Black Dog is a spot that i have stopped at several times over the last decade when in that area of Johnson County. Yesterday was the first time that I have enjoyed my beverage in-house. They are usually packed, so I do a grab and go. Black Dog is actually a pretty cool little space for being in a strip mall in Lenexa. One of the oldest "independent" coffee shops in Johnson County, it has grown quite a following pumping out solid beverages, and over the top baked goods from Ibis Bakery. They have recently joined the umbrella group that owns Messenger, The Roasterie, and The Filing Stations...Black Dog is now in the big leagues with corporate support without having to sell its soul to the national chains. I haven't been to Black Dog in awhile but I like that they have a good menu with food items and bakery items as well. The baristas were pleasant and helpful. The space seems roomier and there were a lot of people but we found a table and the noise level was normal. The only negative was that I chose a sugar free vanilla syrup in my latte and it was not good, I actually couldn't finish it and threw it away. I've had their regular syrups and they have been fine. Next time I go, I will just order a regular latte on not my typical sugar free. read more

This coffee house has ample space for seating and not overly crowded or noisy when it's like 60% of capacity full on a Thursday lunch time. They are partnered with Ibis bakery but still serving light freshly made meals or sandwiches. It's really awesome to have plenty of choices for food and coffee or non-caffeine beverages. I got he biscuit and gravy plate and hot latte today, their gravy is so far the best I've tasted (not much though). The coffee was decent, good coffee. I have been here before and one thing that I forget is the uncomfortable accommodations for someone who wants to write or study. There are not enough outlets for as much seating as this place has to accommodate for as many people as I see come here with laptops. This is the only bad thing that I can say about the place. The rest is all good. If one needs to meet and mingle with someone over coffee, it's great. It's also ideal if you need to have a meeting of five or more people, since they do have an accommodating area for that. Their brewed coffee is from Messenger, so that is very good. The mocha that I had was excellent, as I recall having enjoyed before, and I had a delightful cranberry/orange cookie (which comes from their Ibis bakery, same as at Messenger--can't go wrong). They are also well staffed and I have never had to wait but a minute for someone to take my order.
