My favorite pizza in Providence! They also have seitan hot wings! I can now go out for pizza and wings with my meat-eating friends! They also have a top-notch beer menu. Terrible service. From the moment we walked in, middle of the summer, it felt like it was -2 degrees. I went here with my family for lunch and my mother and I ordered a pizza. Appetizers came, they were good. Then, all the pizzas came, except for 2 of them. The waitress came over and told us the "gluten free" pizza was coming right up, told us nothing about ours. 20 minutes later the GF pizza came, and we asked the waitress where ours was? She said the cook "forgot to make it". Now, I work in a restaurant myself, a cook doesn't "forget" to make something. She asked if we wanted it still and we had absolutely no interest in it. The gluten free pizza wasn't even cooked all the way. The manager didn't even come over to apologize, he only apologized when we were walking out. Definitely not coming back here, at all. read more

My family and I are big fans of Julian's, so we'd been eagerly awaiting the opening of Pizza J. We decided to check it out on Friday night and it is a really cool spot. The space is very nice but still has the quirky elements that I have always adored at Julian's. The menu is a nice mix of interesting appetizers (vegetable tempura, fried mozzarella, white bean salad), pizzas, and sandwiches. We decided to split a pizza (the Arcimbaldo - artichokes, marinated mushrooms, olives, feta) and an eggplant parm sandwich, and we started with the white bean salad. The salad was superb - delicious beans with a really nice vinaigrette and fresh herbs. The portion was good too for $4. The pizza crust was very good, and the toppings were tasty too. The eggplant sandwich was the highlight for me - really, really great. Crispy eggplant, balanced tomato sauce, crusty bread. Mmm. The menu was a bit limited as far as the pizzas go though - I wish they had more vegetarian pizzas, but maybe that's on the horizon. I also wish they offered more non-alcoholic beverages (specifically brewed iced tea). But it was a good dinner and we will be back. Julian's has been one of my favorite restaurants in Providence since I first stepped foot in it. So my expectations of Pizza J were a bit high. I've been there twice now. The first was a one-off soft opening in early September. We got there a little late (it was around 8:30 or so) and they had run out of regular pizza dough and only had enough of their gluten free dough for half a pizza. They offered us their appetizer sampler in addition to the pizza for the same price. The pizza was good, but not great. The appetizers were also good, but not great. The waiter was fantastic. I wish I remembered his name. But being that this was a soft opening, I had a feeling things wouldn't be perfect. So I had to go back. And I did! This time I was able to get a full pizza with the regular pizza crust. We got the vegetable tempura appetizer, which had a really salty dipping sauce (was it just soy sauce? they could have been more creative with that). The pizza was the Tony Clifton. I should have gone with a red sauce pizza, but wasn't crazy about the topping combos they had for it. The pizza was good, cut into square slices, which seems to be a RI thing (this pizza was made to be cut normally, but it's not). The crust itself was mostly flavorless. It really could have used some salt or something extra in the dough. I wasn't overly impressed, having grown up on New Haven area pizza. It was well cooked and a perfect thickness (or in this case thinness). The toppings were tasty, but again, seemed to be lacking in flavor. There was just something missing across the whole pizza. Was it salt? Was it garlic? I can't put my finger on it. Also, this time around, the server we had was pretty bad. He was a bit forgetful, a bit aloof, and not overly helpful or friendly. The atmosphere is cool. However, it's quite loud and difficult to hear the people you're with. They could turn the music volume down a bit because the place echoes from the diners talking. Adding in loud music makes it difficult. It's a big space and the noise just carries. They have a decent beer selection and a small menu. I don't recall if they have a full bar or only have beer and wine. They don't have a menu of cocktails like Julian's has. The important question... would I go back? And the important answer... Yes. Absolutely. I don't judge a restaurant too harshly in their first month or 3 of being open. There are kinks to be worked out. So I'll go back in a month or so and see if things have improved. They're a welcome addition to the Providence restaurant scene. I have high hopes that the food will improve. I love a good thin crust pizza and they're almost there. read more

We came here to meet a friend that we haven't seen in a couple of months (which was way too long). It was our first visit to Pizza J. The atmosphere was perfect. There was great electronic music playing to help set the mood which served as a nice background to our conversation. It felt like a Julian's kind of place. Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure was playing on the TV. Our friend commented that this restaurant felt like it was taken right from Seattle (and he's lived in Seattle)! Our waiter came over and took our order. Our friend commented that he was as cute as a button (which he absolutely was). To start, we ordered some of their many delicious craft beer choices. We ordered the choochoo platter (a fun play on pu pu platter) for our appetizer. It was delicious and a lot of food for 3 people (tip: add the wings, they were top notch). We ordered the yeti pizza which came with pulled pork and bbq sauce. It too was plenty of food for three people. The crust was thin and delicious and the flavors popped. After dinner we exchanged christmas presents (just a few little somethings that we got for each other) then ordered another round of drinks while continuing our convo. Overall it was a great evening at Pizza J. To have such a nice, causal, but still fun atmosphere for adults available on the west side is quite a treat. We will definitely come here again. read more

The food was really great, but unfortunately the service was so bad I feel compelled to leave 2 stars. Our waitress was rude and offstandish, not to mention just plain terrible at her job. We ordered 2 pizza's and she came out with 3, insisting that we ordered 3 and not budging an inch on it. She was barely paying attention when I placed the order and I could sense something was off. She should have taken a pizza back but instead blamed us for the issue and charged us for it, when I know for a fact we ordered 2 pizzas. Then when it came time to pay we had split checks, and we forgot to pay for an item via there iPad payment service, and so she made the other half of the group pay for it in their iPad check, pretty much saying it was impossible to go back to us and let us pay for the one item so they had to pay for it. So weird. Terrible attitude and vibe the whole dinner, and really made what would have been an enjoyable time with friends and family into a discourse on how bad of a waitress we had, which begged the question - what the hell was going on in her life to make her act so rudely? Avoid the short girl with dark hair and glasses at all costs if you want an enjoyable dinner. Great food though! Haha read more

I've had pizza at some of the best, most highly recommended pizzerias throughout the USA over the years - from Arizona to Boston, MA. I've been to many of the top-ranked spots as ranked within national media articles. I love a good pie. Within the past 2 months I've been to this place 3 times. Always the same pie. Always the same consistency. I seriously rank the product here with 2 of New England's heavy-hitters - "Santarpios" of East Boston, Ma., and the original "Frank Pepes" out of New Haven. I can honestly say, the pizza is in the same league. No questions at all. It is a thin dough, so, you have to be ok with that. I went here on Saturday 10/24 and had dinner at the bar. I was very excited to try this place because I am a huge fan of Julian's. The space is really cool, and the staff are very friendly and helpful. Pizza J has a great beer list. We started with the smoked wings which were some of the best wings that I've had. We then had the arcimboldo pizza which was a red sauce base and topped with olives, artichokes, and mushrooms. The bottom of the pizza was cooked very well and had a nice char. The toppings were all very fresh; however, there were too many toppings and way too much red sauce so it left the pizza very soggy and wet in the middle. When I picked up a slice, the toppings started to slide off. I would go back, but I would be hesitant to order pizza again. read more

I had high hopes for Pizza J's after seeing all the awesome pictures on Yelp but was seriously disappointed. I think the major issue was that me and my boyfriend unexpectedly went on trivia night. Place was busy and service was painfully slow. It took well over two hours to get two beers and a pizza. The pizza we received looked amazing but was not hot, just slightly above room temp. And the crust was not crisp but sort of chewy. However the flavor of the pizza was good: we got half pepperoni and half pulled pork. And there is an excellent beer selection. We arrived at 6:30pm and didn't get the bill until after 8:30. The waitress was apologetic about the terrible wait but that didn't make up for the overall experience. It was trivia night so I understand there will be a wait but that doesn't excuse the not so hot pizza. If the service was better and the pizza hot this place has potential for 4 out of 5 stars. Place has a sort of eclectic hipster feel at least at the bar, the dining room had a mix of children, parents, and grandparents. Started with the Angelo, 2 large meatballs served with fries. Meatballs were rather dry and lacking any real flavor, although the sauce wasn't bad. The fries were on the salty side I wish someone had used a little more salt on the rest of the food. We split the strutter pizza, sausage, onion, roasted red peppers, and cheese. We found the pizza to be bland, like it lacked something to give the flavor that extra kick. I prefer Fellini pizza in Cranston for both the atmosphere and food. Although Pizza J is less expensive the pizza is not as large. Overall not bad, but certainly not in my top 5 places for pizza, maybe it will get better with a few more visits. read more

For a simple pizza place, Pizza J is top notch. The food's better than average with some interesting takes on the classics - notably the Italian and Irish eggrolls are a delicious new twist on the old sandwich. The ambiance, while dimly lit, is welcoming for a wide range of people - I've brought my young kids there, and I would find it romantic enough for a date or to just enjoy some drinks and eat at the bar. As for the service, everyone is extremely friendly and helpful from the waitstaff to the take-out counter to the General Manager. In fact, just yesterday, I thought they'd forgotten to give me my fries with my take-out. I found out much later the mistake was mine, that they'd fallen out of my bag in the car, but my point in bringing this up is that when I called to let them know, well, I've rarely spoken to someone more polite and accommodating. I'll start by saying the pizzas we had were good, but not better than some of the other good pizza you can get in Providence. On the downside: (1) it was slow and the place wasn't anywhere near full; (2) the crust was too soft; (3) there was only 1 red and 1 white wine and they were both not good and not cheap; (4) the server did not do a good job checking in (something that if you're going to have to wait a long time, would be good) and and didn't seem like he cared that much; and (5) we had to ask for greens to come with the antipasto "salad." Pizza J is my new favorite pizza experience in Rhode Island. We finally got the chance to visit on a Friday night for some end of the week beer and pizza and I hope this becomes a new tradition for me. First off, parking is plentiful and easy. Next, the space is dark, open, clean, full of great music and a there's a lovely pizza-in-the-oven aroma that immediately hits you when you walk in the door. There were only two of us, so we sat at the bar. Eating at the bar here is no problem - the bar is extra roomy, allowing space for a full pizza to sit without overlapping into your plate space (eliminating a possible pizza in the lap situation). There are lots of great beer options on tap and they take care to serve each style in the proper type of glass. Everybody working that night was really friendly and (I'm assuming) happy to be surrounded in all things pizza. The best part of it all - the pizza. We got a pizza with their house made cashew-based vegan cheese and what a difference it makes to not have to eat a vegan pizza smothered in daiya (I'm not a fan of that stuff)! Pizza J goes the extra mile and provides an excellent, unique and quality pizza for us vegan patrons (the dairy cheese pizza looked great too). Also, it wasn't listed as a pizza add-on according to the menu, but I did get some of their seitan crumbled onto the pizza and it was great and satisfying - I hope they decide to add that to the list of add on toppings. The crust is smokey and flavorful with the perfect ratio of airy/chewy-ness.
