As someone who loves pizza but has a gluten intolerance, this place was an answer to my prayers. The 12" chicken broccoli alfredo was $20, with perfect proportions of heavenly cheese and white sauce. Came out very quickly and piping hot. Staff was friendly especially with a couple regulars that came in after me. This is the kind of place that I'm sure locals know and love. We're not from the area, but found good reviews for Pizza D'Action. We look for places offering gluten-free, and the owner told me that the gf crust was also vegan! The crust has seasoning like foccatia bread, and excellent flavor as a red sauce and vegan cheese option! The Veggie Vegan ROCKED!! No cheese needed! It had flavor and texture!! I would go back! Had an interesting experience here. Found an insect in the side salad that came with my vegan lasagna. The waitress apologized deeply and said we'd receive a discount on our meal. We received the bill and there was no discount. They'd simply taken off $2 for the cost of the side salad. I asked the waitress and Josh, the manager came over to explain. He was pretty arrogant, defensive and overly loud. He said the salad comes in a bag and essentially it's not their fault. And I quote "it's not like it's a cockroach!" He continued with "I've been doing this for 15 years and the Health Inspector eats here all of the time". Not sure how that justifies having a beetle in my salad. He finally takes the angle of accusing us of having eaten the salad. After much back and forth he says if we aren't happy with the 'discount' he can go ahead and "take some more money off our dinner". He eventually gave us half-off another item on our bill (pizza)--and a very awkward and uncomfortable end to our dinner. I'll have to pass on this one. Then after getting our drinks it took another 20 for them to take our order because the server was so busy running around (understaffed not her fault). There are so many vegan options I had a hard time picking but i went with the lasagna and it was great. Huge portion, very fresh and even the dressing for the salad was delicious. I had a nice quick lunch here on the way to the airport. I love when restaurants are eager to provide great fare for their diet-restricted patrons, like myself. I had the vegan sausage sandwich. It nice and hearty, and had a really generous helping of sausage (did they put a whole package of Tofurky in there??). The interior of the restaurant was pretty plain - standard pizza parlor look - but I like that. The woman working that day was really nice and helpful, as well. Overall, a nice experience. My only concern as I leafed through the menu was the big upcharge on pizzas when substituting vegan cheese. If I recall correctly, it was more than $7 substitution fee for the largest size. I ordered a 1/2 cheese, 1/2 onion x large pizza and my wife got a small vegan pizza with the red sauce. Okay... calling the red stuff on the pizza, sauce, would be a lie. It's more like tomato paste. I seriously believe that it's canned something (probably tomato paste with a little added water) and additional spices. It's very unappealing. I had a hard time checking down the few slices that I forced myself to eat considering it was over $20. We also got French fries and mozzarella sticks. The fries are fries...had a weird coating but was okay. The mozzarella sticks were obviously frozen with the same paste for dipping. I will mention that my wife liked her thin crust vegan pizza but the same issues wth the sauce (paste). The crust of the regular is pan pizza. More like a pan doused with oil and the crust fried inside of it. We went there for the vegan options and I'm shaking my head at the how awful the non-vegan food was. The last two times I've ordered from here, however, the pizza has been close to inedible--greasy and sloppy. We also had a bad experience with some appetizers we ordered, which were fairly tasteless. Never would have thought from the outside, that this generic-looking little pizza/sub shop offered good vegan and vegetarian food too but they do! And they do it WELL! As a vegan, it is pretty hard to eat out in some places, and even when you find a spot you can actually order from, typically that spot will only offer 1 or 2 items, or make a "vegan version" of something you want, but with no toppings, cheez, protein, etc. Pizza D'Action actually offers vegan cheez, mayo, a variety of plant-based proteins, and they do it well, so I'm not missing out on my meal if I'm getting food with omnivores. My only complaint is that they could add a little more signage or window deco to encourage more plant-based peeps to stop here, and who knows? Maybe encourage or entice omnis to try the veggie stuff! :D read more

Based on a previous experience, we decided to order a pizza from Pizza D'Action. We placed our order over the phone for a large (14" round) pizza with pepperoni and mushrooms for $15.00. We were told 20-25 minutes. After waiting 10 minutes at home, we drove to Pizza D'Action and found a spot to park, walked into the smallish establishment, then let the guy know we had ordered over the phone. He said our pizza was on it's way out of the oven and would be just a couple of minutes. We paid, he brought out our pizza, we drove home, and ate 75% of the pizza. What a bunch of losers running this joint. We order our food and wait over 90 minutes for it, so of course it arrived ice cold, onion rings hard as rocks, pizza cold but burnt. So I complain and get a $20 store credit. A week later we try again. This time I order a burger well done, and potato skins. An hour later it arrives again ice cold and the potato skins were like rocks, not to mention you get 3 skins for $6.50. Then start into the burger and find it is absolutely raw inside which is why I ordered it well done in the first place. Not sure when this place changed hands, but it is not the place I loved. I'll be calling the BOH to do an inspection and tell these idiots you cannot sell raw burger. The worst pizza place in Holyoke. Avoid it at all costs. When you complain you can hear the manager screaming profanities in the back because you complained. Imagine having the nerve to expect hot, fresh food? Since posting this review a friend I have known for years and used to work there also named Scott (but obviously not the owner) and he said it has all changed, and on deliveries they prepare the food and it sits in bags until they have 5 or 6 orders ready to go and then the driver gets them. If you are first you get warm/cold food, if you are last you get ICE COLD food. The "manager" is a real asshole, and he said he wouldn't eat there again if he was starving to death. One of Holyokes gems no longer exists. With so many reviews all saying the same thing about this Josh guy you have to wonder how he keeps that job. As I was passing through the area looking for a good lunch spot with vegan options for my family and myself, this restaurant came up on Yelp with the vegan tag so we had to go here since we love pizza. It did not disappoint. The pizza was huge and so good. We didn't have any leftovers even though the pizza was huge. I love that they have options to choose any toppings and combinations to make a custom pizza. The service was great. Awful management, pleasant workers, when they're on make good grinders. That's about it, otherwise, most of their stuff is just awful. Wow. Truly shocked this establishment has 4 stars and 77 reviews on here. Walk in to pick up a chicken broccoli pizza, and waited ten or so minutes before the counter girl walked back inside, smelling of cigarettes. Not a big deal I get it, we all need a break. But when I got home and bit into the pizza it was very low quality. The cheese is clearly very inexpensive. The type where you go to grab a slice and all the toppings just pull right off the piece. The chicken was flavorless and dry, crust was ok, but bland and the bottom was very uneven, so it did not cook evenly. I felt bad but also felt like the owner should know about this, and it was my first time trying so I wanted to give them a chance. it was the owner who answered and he did not even offer an apology, let alone a refund. I asked if I could have a pepperoni pizza instead, as I was not going to eat the chx broc. He seemed irritated but agreed to make one. Long story short the pepperoni was just as disappointing, with more grease than the previous pie. Cheap cheap ingredients. Not sure if this is only the go to for gluten free/vegan pizza, but I won't be finding out. Their pizza crust is really good as well as the vegan cheese (which is hard to do as I normally don't like vegan cheese). So after a long time of not going to this restaurant (due to past problems there-see other review), I went back three times in the past couple of weeks because I know one of the employees and thought that maybe things had gotten better. They have not. On the first of my three most recent trips I was waited on by the person who I know. I thought it very strange that he would be waiting on customers and handling food while he had extremely dirty fingernails. I have not noticed this problem with ANY other servers ANYWHERE ELSE.....it was extreme enough to cause me to question the business standards for cleanliness. But the pizza I ordered was very good so I ignored the issue on that trip. The second trip I was waited on by a different person who did not have any noticeable personal hygiene issues. On both of the first two trips I sat at a table in the first room instead of the dining room. I had no issues with the second visit. The third visit was a little more unnerving though. I sat in the dining room in a booth. I was initially the only patron at noontime on a beautiful Saturday afternoon. That seemed a little odd to me....that the restaurant would be completely empty during what seemed like peak lunchtime hours. I ordered the same pizza, and once again it was outstanding. But the waitress (who also did an outstanding job) told me they had no ice. I wondered why they hadn't bought some bagged ice to use in customer soft drinks, but didn't make an issue of it. Then I noticed that the table in the booth I was at was somewhat sticky, like it had not been washed properly. My pizza arrived, and as I ate it I couldn't help but notice that the tops of the backs of all the booth seats looked like all of the white paint had been worn off from years of use. I wondered why they had not repainted them. It wasn't until the end of my meal that I put some water on a napkin and rubbed the BLACK areas in the white paint, only to discover that the paint had not been rubbed off.....it was actually coated with a very thick accumulation of DIRT that easily rubbed off with just the water on my napkin. I showed the waitress the dirt and she went into the kitchen a got the "manager". I showed him as well. He thanked me for bringing it to his attention several times, but went into a long tirade about how clean their operation is and how they have never had a problem with food safety inspectors and that many of the city employees from different agencies eat their regularly and don't complain, and how they may tons of money and he earns $80,000 a year as the business manager. I have spent my life in retail and there are a few truths I know about it. First, it does't matter what the business manager's opinion is. The only thing that matters is whether or not you make a sale. You are not going to retain customers by arguing with them or making a speech. The second thing is that there is a correct method for conflict resolution that is standard in customer service. 1. Listen to the customer. 2. Repeat the complaint back so they know you understand them. 3. APOLOGIZE and promise to correct the issue. 4. Invite them to come back to enjoy the improvements you are going to make in their behalf. Most customers don't complain. They just don't return. And most customers with concerns make a point of telling all of their friends about negative experiences, so you never lose just one patron...you lose their whole crew. Based on all of the negatives I have experienced at the place, I can't see myself returning. And that's a damn shame, because their thin crust, pesto pizza with feta is definately awesome. All the manager had to do was thank me, apologize, and promise to clean the dirt. But he had a different agenda. I have eaten here many times and every time that I do I am never really that impressed with the food. They have many different options like a typical neighborhood pizzeria would. The grinders are standard, but nothing to write home about. The pizza has a little bit too much sauce, too much cheese, and not enough flavor. Why is this a problem? Because you can't bite through all of the cheese when you take a bite of your pizza and with all of the extra sauce, the cheese slides off the dough and all that you are left with is tomato stained bread. I have tried several of the dinners that they offer. But I can't seem to find any that I really like. I have ordered lasagna several times, because I really love a good lasagna. Every time that I order it it is burnt. I want to like the chicken wings, but they are served dry. And if you ask for buffalo sauce, they will give you a side of barbecue sauce. Good grinders no matter what you get. But the Pizza is not made the traditional way. I like my pepperoni and other ingredients like Hamburg peppers and mushrooms floating on top of the Cheese. They put the Cheese on last so all the above are buried underneath. It looks weird to. I like when the pepperoni gets curled up on top and even singed a little if it is cut thin enough.
