While in Queens on Friday 2/2 for a wake / funeral, I was looking for a restaurant to take the family between sessions. My brother-in-law suggested PIZZA CHEF. I was hoping for something more than a pizzeria, but accepted his suggestion and entered the busy strip mall. He wasn't sure if there was table service, but claimed the food was good. I pushed a few tables together to accommodate our party of 8. To our surprise we were soon greeted by a young lady who brought silverware and menus. She was fast on the water and bread without the usual insincere server chit-chat. My brother-in-law said that portions were generous and that they usually spit an entree, so that's what a few couples did. No additional charge for sharing! Entrees came with a generous side salad and they split that too! We ordered the Salmon special, Chicken Cordon Bleu, Chicken Parmigiana and some Zucchini Sticks as appetizer, as well as one bowl of their famous Pasta Fagioli. Everything was tasty and enjoyed by all. I paid the bill and had to depart early to drive someone to the train station while the others lingered on a while. In my absence I heard that they were later surprised with a complimentary dessert plate to share. Besides the great food at a reasonable price, the main reason I'm writing is to recognize the EXCELLENT service provided by our young server with a pony tail. I didn't catch her name but she's was listed as EMP #34 on my check. She was hands down the most efficient, professional, speedy, kind and humble server we've ever encountered. Pizza Chef worked hard over the past month to deserve a 1 star rating, and they don't deserve your business either. I used to be a regular customer and eat at Pizza Chef at least 2x a week when at my Queens Condo, and spent approximately 7-8 dollars each time, but never again after what happened. Details: I walked in and saw in the display case next to where the pizza is a fresh Grilled Chicken Paninis. The chicken was thick and overflowing from the bread portion. It was loaded with lettuce and tomatoes and peppers. I could not resist. I pointed to it in the case and I said: "I will have, "that one." Instead of grabbing "that one," the Clerk goes to the back of the store and finds another one. The Clerk passes in front of me on the way to the oven and I stop to him remind him that the Paninis I ordered was in the case. He in a belittling and aggressive posture commented: "It's the same!, What, this is not good enough for you?" BUT it was not nearly the same Paninis as the one in the Case. They Bated and Switched on me! The one they gave me had less than half the amount of chicken (the slice was as thin as you can slice chicken breast before it falls apart), half the amount of tomatoes, and half the amount of peppers. I asked the Clerk to give me the thick one in the Case. He responded, "They don't allow me to do that." This activity not only deserves an investigation by the NYC Department of Consumer Affairs, but is probably indicative of more serious underlying problems at this establishment. They will never see me again, and I would think twice about them seeing you again. There are plenty of other Pizza stores in the area--they are by no means a monopoly. In the end, they actually did me a favor, because after this incident, I found another place nearby that had a lot better quality of Italian food, better attitude, and they treat the customer with respect. Ordered good amount of food to go. The Veal Parm on hero happened to come out as a chicken parm. Another order was suppose to be a veal parm with a Cesar salad but when getting home realized they forgot the Cesar salad. Cheese on it was not salty enough or had that nice melted stringy cheese texture. Calamari was way over cooked where it was chewy and just tasted breading. The linguine with white clam sauce and clams were very bland. Needed some salt, butter, and herbs like basil. The container it came in to-go leaked all over the bag. It had been forever since I had a slice from Pizza Chef. An institution for me growing up, I remembered it fondly. The C household did not partake in pizza nights but my best friend's family did. We would come by and have a slice and some knots. Well the joint has gotten bigger. And there are many more options, but you can still get a slice and some knots. Their slice is just as good if not better than what I remember. Its a little more doughy than the average place and I like that. They have a ton of specialty slices and pies. They also offer a hot food bar. I like this option in local pizza places. Its located in a huge shopping plaza right off the CIP. The place itself is clean with plenty of seating. They also have a TV, so stop having your lunch in the car. Sit and watch the news or listen to the guys behind the counter busting on each other. Looking for a new pizzeria to try, my friends and I thought, "hey, why not try Pizza Chef?" So, we did. The setting and room is very nice. I could not tell if the staff was friendly or not because they were busy. I decided I would try two pepperoni slices. The pizza was not bad, however, it was not great. One slice was greasier than the next. I've never seen so much oil from one slice, let alone two. Now, let's say we get passed that...although, it was pretty hard to...what got me, and what gives them 2 stars, is how they wear gloves while serving the food, but then handle the money with the gloves, never changing them, continue to handle food. While the free baguette and the delicious doughy garlic knots were a nice treat, the pasta really and I really pissed off my bf lmaoooo. He ordered a baked ziti and from what I remember, it's sorta like lasagna with a little layering. His "baked ziti" was basically penne with tomato sauce and cheese melted on top LOL. I had the pasta primavera over a tomato sauce. Veggie was scarce, the again just penne, tomato, and veggies boom. Very simply and huge generous portion. I guess in terms of flavor, it's just plain but if you eat to be full, then this is your place! I also noticed that our knots were just warm. The guy who was standing by the oven had to throw in someone else's knots a second time too because I guess it wasn't hot either ‍. Pizza Chef manager not wearing face mask around employees and customers. I went to pick-up a pizza pie at the Pizza Chef Restaurant at the Whitestone Shopping Center in Queens at 153-81 Cross Island Parkway, Whitestone, NY 11357. All the employees and customers were wearing face masks and gloves. The manager, a man in his forties and about 6'3" was walking around with one cellophane glove only, and no mask. When I called him out on it he gave me a sarcastic glance and kept on walking around the restaurant. I was at the restaurant for 30 minutes waiting for my order to be ready. He continued to walk around hovering over the employees, the cooked food, and the pizza pies - without face covering, one flimsy glove in only one hand, and ignoring all social distancing guidelines. He should not be allowed to put the conscientious, concerned, and law-abiding employees and customers of this restaurant in danger. I have been a customer at this restaurant for more than thirty years. I found it extremely inconsiderate when so many of us in NYC have suffered with family members and friends succumbing to Covid-19. I will not be going back ever again. read more
