YUM. So happy we found this place!! Definitely a tiny hole in the wall, so don't expect speedy service, but you CAN expect fresh, delicious sushi and appetizers, wonderful service and an amazing mom n pop spot! There are only 6 seats (2 outside & 4 inside), so ordering take-out is always a bit easier, especially because parking can be a bit tricky. Appetizers: Both the miso and ramen are legit!! I usually try to make sure that we get one of each because I can't decide which I love most. The seaweed salad is delicious -- no skimping on seaweed and always a generous portion. The tempura everything is always a heavy hitter too. Can't really go wrong with tempura shrimp served right out of the frier! The fried potstickers... DAMN. So SO good. Huge portion though, so there usually are some leftovers for lunch the next day. The sashimi, sushi and hand rolls are always on point! Every roll that we've tried has been incredibly good, but my go-to favorite is the salmon hand roll. Perfection!! Seriously. So good. This is a wonderful, small sushi restaurant in Manhattan Beach. I ordered food from here for lunch and had such a great experience! The restaurant is small, with only a few (VERY few) places to sit inside. Because of this, I decided to order to go, and called in the order beforehand. My fiancee and I got the California roll, the spicy tuna roll, the rainbow roll, and the shrimp tempura roll. The California roll was delicious, and the ratio of filling to rice was perfect. The spicy tuna roll was good, but probably my least favorite of the bunch as it was much spicier than I expected. The rainbow roll had generous portions of fish and was very fresh and filling, and the shrimp tempura roll was crunchy and delicious! The food was also packaged nicely, and they made sure to give us enough soy sauce, which I appreciated. The quality of fish is great, especially for the price. Pieces of Pisces! The storefront is small and decorated with colorful string lights. It can be easy to miss while driving, so drive slowly. Space: The restaurant is a little odd, not your traditional appearance when you first walk in. There is a large display case of dishes and ceramic cats. But turn to your left and you will see a little window behind which the sushi chef works. His wife takes orders and provides very sweet service to her customers. There are four bar seats in the whole place which is essentially two because you cannot enter or exit if people sit at one pair of seats by the door. Food: Be prepared to wait for your food. Approximately 25-30 minutes regardless of whether you are eating in or picking up take out. The sushi here is absolutely positively top notch. Every bite of every dish was heavenly. I have never had sushi as fresh and delicious as that at Pisces. The texture of the fish is perfection- it has a nice mouthfeel and bite. It isn't tough or limp, simply perfection. We had a combo bowl, seaweed salad, spicy tuna roll and some other small dish as well as some green tea. The prices were pretty standard for Manhattan Beach and South Bay standards. Given the quality of the fish, I felt the prices were completely justified. Have an alcoholic drink or two before you head out for sushi because they do not serve any alcohol. Parking: There is metered street parking just out front that accepts coins as well as credit card. Pro Tip: There is frozen mochi in a case by the cash register. read more

This place is AMAZING! It's owned and ran by the most adorable couple! Hence the name Pisces! The sushi is SO delicious! I especially love their Eel and Tuna! They call you when your food is ready. I was in the area looking for parking when they called, and they offered to bring the order curbside for me because parking can be tough in that area. This may have been the first time I've felt truly misguided by the reviews on yelp. Everybody and their mother seemed to love it so much and had nothing but stellar praise for this place. That, combined with my desire to support a mom and pop business sealed the deal. When I was in the area the other day, I made it a point to stop in and give Pisces a try. Verdict: decent food but definitely not up to the glowing standards of all the reviews I read. Maybe I'm missing something? I kind of don't get it. The sushi was ok, but portions did not justify the slightly exorbitant prices. I don't mind shelling out for quality but paying almost $20 for a chirashi bowl containing 5 pieces of mediocre fish is pushing it. It also shouldn't take 20 minutes to arrive, particularly since I was the only one there. It's not really a dine-in place, more of a takeout spot, and they definitely encourage this by offering no more than four seats in the entire place. I had initially thought to pick up some sushi and chill out on the beach but my enthusiasm was dampened by their languid service and the general lack of any sense of urgency. Maybe my experience would have been better if I'd called in and picked up instead of just wandering in off the street. The place is run by a cute Japanese couple but even with that going for them, it failed to live up to the expectations promised by their yelp rating. read more

I went here with my friend and coworker, Essie, one day because were were tired of the local eats in El Segundo, so we yelped Pisces, hopped in the Camry and went towards the beach. We walked towards the restaurant and walked inside. We walked into a building and realized this place was tiny. We went back outside to find the real joint. We searched in vain for another minute until we realized, this tiny place was the right spot. There's a kitchen, a cash register, a vending machine, and two bars with two stools each. The owner, Sara, reassured us we were in the correct location and for us to have a seat. We chose the Tuna Crunch roll, tuna roll, tuna hand roll and the Eel Special. The quality of the food was good. I was impressed with the taste. I've been to places that sell sushi as cheap as Pisces, but the taste was unacceptable;however, Pisces has a good taste to price ratio. Sara, the real charm to this place, spoke with Essie and me as much as we could communicate. We spoke no Japanese, but knew a few Japanese phrases, which sparked a bit of laughter from Sara. Warning, this place is tiny but don't let that deter you. There's only four seats inside and two more that are outside, so it's probably best to get it to go during busy times. The miso soup was delicious and actually had a lot more than broth. It was filled with green onions, tofu, seaweed and other goodies. Next came the rolls and let me tell you, they were gigantic. There was lots of fish in them, and was very filling. My coworker and I agreed that the rainbow roll had good variety and was excellent. He had a yellowtail and I had a spicy scallop roll. Those were still good but the rainbow definitely took the cake. The owners were very friendly and stopped by to chat. That was a great touch to a great meal. If you want to feel that trendy sushi vibe, try another spot. Skip the high prices of downtown Manhattan beach sushi and get high quality Japanese food here instead. My typical order at Pisces would cost 2-3 times as much if I ordered it at another local, unnamed restaurant. There is a very small (2-4 ppl) dining area inside Pisces and an outside table (4ppl) for lunch/dinner. If there are no seats. The only waitress for the entire area is the wife of the Sushi chef. Rush is half an hour before closing (9:00pm), so try to avoid standing in line just to pick your food up, order well before closing. Found this place on Yelp, and I'm so glad we ate here. This is NOT the place to go if you have a big crowd, the place is SUPER tiny. (only seats about 6 people max, 4 inside at counters, 2 outside at a small table). But the owners are some of the nicest people I've ever met. Super friendly, wonderful service... Now on to the food. One word... DELICIOUS! I had a small bowl of miso soup which was very tasty, and the crunchy shrimp California roll.... soooo good! everything tasted so fresh. I've eaten from here twice, and generally I've been really happy. There are a couple caveats that I'll get to at the end. -Miso has onions and actual SLABS of tofu! Awesome! -Seaweed salad is fresh, not too oily, and there's a LOT of it! -The crunchy spicy tuna, crunchy shrimp tempura, and eel lover's rolls are all great. Definitely worth the money, and these are generally the only the ones we buy when we go. -The couple who runs the place is really really nice. -The place is really small. We actually ate in the restaurant first time we were here and the service was great, but expect to take the food home with you. Unfortunately, I have a serious bone to pick with some of the food: We were REALLY disappointed with the tuna lover's, chicken BBQ, and rainbow rolls that we ordered. Tuna lover's had a distressing catfood-like after taste, the chicken BBQ was overcooked and unappetizing, and the rainbow roll was stuffed with imitation crab meat loaded with mayo, and nothing else. Blech. Bottom line, some of the food here is amazing, and some of it is downright bad. Experiment and find the ones you like! When the food is good from here, it's REALLY good. read more

The wife and I went around 7:30 on a Thursday night and had no trouble finding a parking place OR a seat. I feel like we lucked out because there were quite a few people in after us that had to order to-go. We got the rainbow roll, tuna lover's roll and spicy tuna crispy. All three were just amazingly delicious. We also got Miso soup, which was SUPER authentic. Definitely not from a box like most places we go. ONLY gripe is that the place is so small!
