While I love Seabutter, I'm obsessed with the Bar for its menu selection. It's always great to have a menu that's got the best of both worlds: a fixed assortment and an array of options! It was our first time visiting the Bar and my husband got the Taste of the Bar while I got the 6 piece hand roll fixed menu. The Taste of the Bar had the most unique recipes for their rolls and came with a sake or green tea, which was amazing iced. The Bar is located in a super fun little strip mall towards the back of the mall. It's sort of low key, so it's not really too crowded, hard to find parking, or much of a wait to be seated generally. I loved how friendly and social the staff are as you're being served your hand rolls, it made the experience that much more enjoyable. Service is prompt and you're welcome to order more food at any point during your meal. I loved the 6 piece. It was a more traditional hand roll offering of salmon, spicy tuna, amber jack, blue crab, toro, and scallop. The hand rolls were all so flavorful, but my favorites were the blue crab for its creaminess and the amber jack for the lemon zestiness that paired so well with the protein. First off, pretty good hand rolls. I liked their blue crab and negi Toro the most. I did get the 6pc set and got a HYE upon recommendation. I think the taste is really up there, in terms of feeling satisfied or full afterward is up for debate. I think that the sequencing of the rolls is a bit off-putting, there is no rhyme or order to when you buy the set, it comes based on whatever the chef decides to make! It's not the worst thing but it did get me excited for the next piece which wasn't what I'd expect each time.. oh well. Their pickled ginger was great because the experience felt like an omakase, so I was cleansing my palette with a piece each time. I think their best ones, e.g. HYE, was not as amazing as I thought it should be. It was just your typical baked heavy items to get your savory palette going... It didn't feel as nice as the others. I give this a 4-star as I dinged this place for their price. The ingredients are good with their presentation and the limited seats make it quite exclusive feeling. What a great find in El Segundo! We usually go to KazuNori when we're craving hand rolls, but The Bar by Seabutter is every bit as good. The six-hand-roll set is an incredible value at $33 and includes salmon, blue crab, spicy tuna, amberjack, negi toro, and scallop. My husband ordered the same set but couldn't resist adding the truffle salmon hand roll at the end because it looked too good to pass up. We arrived just before the dinner rush and were seated immediately at the bar. The service was quick, and the hand rolls were served one at a time, which is exactly how they should be enjoyed so the nori stays perfectly crisp. My favorites were the blue crab and the scallop. Both were generously filled, incredibly fresh, and absolutely delicious. I also love dipping my hand rolls in a little ponzu sauce for the extra flavor. Honestly the BEST handroll restaurant I've ever been to, even better than Kazunori and Rol!!! It's pretty small inside, so I don't recommend coming with a huge party. Easy parking with a parking lot outside. Taste of the Bar: 4/5. Not worth the $35 because the miso soup or sunomono salad (cucumber salad with sesame oil) and hot green tea were very average tasting, nothing special. BUT the 4 handrolls were super FRESH AND DELICIOUS! The best hand rolls I've ever had!! I don't have a favorite one because they all were sooo good. I stopped by The Bar for the first time and came away really impressed. The quality of the fish was the first thing that stood out. Everything tasted incredibly fresh, and each hand roll was generously filled. I've had hand rolls at a lot of places where they're mostly rice, but that definitely wasn't the case here. So how's the food? Rolls are pretty simple concept so the decipher is how good of quality is the filling I ordered a set that came with four rolls than included salmon, tuna, scallop and crab. None of these rolls really stood out. In a positive side the fish did not taste fishy. The best roll we had, which was not part of set that I had was the yellow fish. Hand Roll flavors and ingredients were nicely proportioned, and yeh so true that it is optimal to eat the hand rolls immediately when served so the seaweed doesn't get soggy. We tried the Taste of the Bar and the 5-roll set, plus two extra hand rolls. Friendly staff. Ambiance was balanced between casual and modern lines. -- mostly at-the-bar tall seating with two low level chairs at a lower counter. Two things can be addressed, though these do not detract from food and service quality: The tall chairs are heavy and awkward to get close to counter when squeezed between either side by diners. You'll need a person to shove the chair closer or figure out chair placement first before sliding onto seat. They could reduce the music volume in the bathroom as it was too loud. read more

Found this place after heading to LAX. Amazing hand roll bar! Bar type seating that surrounds the sushi chef building your hand roll. Great service. Chef informed us of what each roll was coming. We got the seabutter deluxe which includes their top hand rolls. Rice ratio was solid and had good texture. Started with the salmon truffle. Torched in front of us with a strong sear taste. Next was the HYE, a minced yellowtail belly and tasted fresh. Uniscallop roll also tasted fresh and good quality. Sliced T toro hand roll was buttery and melts in mouth. The wagyu smell lit up the room when it was torched. One of the best hand roll places I've been to. Came before dinner time and it was empty. Came here after my son's basketball games were done for post game meal. The food is spot on and I could have eaten until I burst but stopped. Notable hand rolls for me the spicy tuna crunch and the truffle mushroom. I ate the mushroom so fast that I don't take a pic but really incredible. Service really fast and friendly. Super excited that a handroll bar opened up in the South Bay. I would say this is significantly more expensive than Kazunori but the caveat is that there are more premium rolls & they give a lot more fish imo. They have a set menu of rolls and a la carte items all ranging from $6.50 per roll to about $15~ I got the Luxe 3 handroll set which included truffle salmon, HYE (yellowtail with lava salt), and Negi toro. My husband got a few a la carte and the wagyu handroll which was a plus after eating all fish. It came out to a $100 lunch for 9 rolls.. which is steep & we weren't full yet. I have eaten here twice now, both at "off" times mid-afternoon, so never had a problem getting a table or with service. The style is similar to KazuNori, handrolls in sets or a la cart. Unfortunately, the food here is just mid. The first time I decided to try the Lux 3 Set since it was interesting and different. It came with salmon truffle, HYE, and negi toro, and I also added a blue crab. For me, maybe the "lux" was too much for me haha but if you like truffle and caviar, I would recommend trying it yourself. With the blue crab, I found myself crunching on shell and had to spit / pick it out multiple times. I gave it a second chance and tried the regular 3 roll set of salmon, spicy tuna, and albacore. While I did enjoy this better, it still felt lackluster. Both times, the rice was more hard than I'm used to. AND both times the rolls came in a different order than listed! Which I guess maybe isn't a big deal but I just thought it was weird. Especially with the Lux set since the rolls are more special, I wanted to know what I was eating. Will I come back? I was excited to see a new handroll place in El Segundo. I came here for a weekday lunch and we were able to snag the last few seats at the counter. The place is similar to KazuNori where it's just a bar/counter seating. I ordered the Seabutter Deluxe which came with five handrolls: salmon truffle, HYE, uni-scallop, double T, and Wagyu. The HYE had way too much sesame oil on it and it overpowered the other flavors. I also got the U.S.C (uni, seared scallop, caviar). Fight on! That one was probably the best one out of the ones I tried. Honestly, none of the handrolls were bad but they weren't amazing either. When it comes to handrolls, I'm more of a purist and I would rather have just fresh sashimi, rice, and crispy seaweed without all this extra sauce on top and overdressing it. Overall, the rolls were pretty good. However, I left feeling a bit disappointed. We felt that it was overpriced for what it is and for the amount of food. The portion size was small and the handrolls were skinnier than the ones we have had at other restaurants like KazuNori. The seaweed is also soggy and it would taste so much better if it came out crisp like it does at KazuNori. Service was just okay. There were a couple faux pas like they took away my water at the beginning of the meal because they mistaked it for another person's next to me who had already left. They also gave me a soy sauce/ginger dish that looked dirty and used. I probably won't be back. It includes minced yellowtail belly, sesame oil, minced truffle, kizami wasabi, & sea salt. Super flavorful! Hubby got two Handrolls; Miss Crab and Wagyu Beef, & a Blue Crab Don. The food is pretty safe if you want hand rolls. But we ordered the sashimi and it's just mashed fish, not actually fish slices, which was disappointing. We ordered uni toro donburi and it was a small bowl of rice with regular furikake (I think the egg nori furikake you buy in the cylinder container) , on top and more mashed fish. I understand it's a concept but it might be better to change the menu name slightly to not confuse actual sushi folks. Service is counter style, so I wouldn't say it's anything different. They do have waiters but because your back is turned to them, they only clean off plates when dishes are done, Not to actually check. Ambiance is ok, it's a high ceiling bar sushi style. Sits maybe 10-15 people at a time. they do have a set menu, miso soup, 4 rolls and a serving of sake for $35 so that seems like a good deal. Something to note, all the 3,4,6, hand roll sets, they cannot modify AT ALL. I'm allergic to raw scallop so I asked if they could cook it, or just torch it, but they said they couldn't. They couldn't even replace it with a cheaper cut of fish (anything but raw scallop, even a cucumber roll was ok I informed them) or anything else that's already on the list of rolls but they said no. Which is slightly annoying but I guess allergies are my issue, not theirs. Conclusion, I did order a lot of Al la carte so it was good. We saw videos of this place in TikTok and instagram and wanted to give it a try. We were excited that a new handroll bar opened in the area because we love handrolls. Unfortunately, it did not live up the hype for us. It took about an hour wait and it is because the service is slow. There were 4 uncleaned stations that took a while for them to get to and get new people seated. Once we got seated, we noticed the service is slow because there were only 4 people working. 2 people were doing Togo orders, 1 person doing the rolls for the dine in, and 1 waiter. At one point, there was only the two of us and another party of 2 sitting (waiter was taking time to turnover the other seating), and it still took a while for our food. I have a seafood allergy and I was a little upset that I could not substitute scallops. I also didn't like that they didn't note my allergy for cross contamination. Other handroll places make sure it known to me that they change their gloves when they prepare my handrolls so there's no cross contamination between the shell fish. I did like the salmon and yellowtail handrolls. I thought it tasted better than the more fancier rolls. Overall, I don't think we would come back here again. read more

Found this handroll spot through DineLA and the deal was too good to pass up for $35 which included appetizer, 4 unique handrolls, and a full drink. The fish portions were generous and the unique flavors hit the spot! The service was also incredibly friendly and attentive. I usually skip scallop, but I wasn't able to swap it out in the Dine LA menu. But the way they prepare it here is different and to my liking. They finely minced the scallop and mixed it with kewpie mayo and masago, making it super creamy and surprisingly really good. I got a glass of cabernet blanc, which was such a refreshing pairing. My friend ordered hot sake, and even though we had zero complaints, the staff brought out a second one just because they felt the first wasn't hot enough. I've been here twice and both times the staff have been really nice and friendly. If you're less adventurous, the set of basic rolls works just as fine. Salmon, yellowtail, scallop - all amazing. I am not the biggest fan of the spicy tuna here (it is minced and not chunky), but everything else is absolutely amazing. Service is efficient, polite and quick. The interior is clean and accommodating, but seating can be a bit of a tight fit. It's not a full bar, more of a half-bar. Plenty of parking in the lot. For full transparency, my review is based on my experience ordering via Uber Eats. But this was my first time ordering and wow everything was amazing. I know that the rolls would be even better freshly made in the restaurant, and considering how great they were vis delivery I will absolutely go to the restaurant next time. I got the 6 roll order, added the HYE roll and the toro uni-don. All amazing, all delicious. The yellowtail (which is always a must when I get sushi) was not my favorite but the HYE (yellowtail belly) more than made up for it. With multiple locations across Los Angeles, we were curious to see what the newest would have to offer. The El Segundo space has been open only a few days and is a sushi bar setup more than full blown restaurant like some of the others. Like many handroll places, there are no reservations, seating is limited (roughly 14 bar seats) and you can order via 'sets'. Unlike other handroll places, you can get Donburi (bowls), sashimi, and appetizers. It's a bit pricier than KazuNori but that is due to the quality of fish and is still well priced for what you get. All the fish was very fresh, and you can feel that sense of pride from the team to present that to customers. Vladimir and staff could not have been nicer or more helpful. Our favorite of the night was the HYE roll w/this amazing lava sea salt that was the perfect complement to the fish. I ordered from The Bar - Seabutter through DoorDash and tried their BOGO special for the Sake Jalapeño--salmon sashimi with a little jalapeño and ponzu. This ended up being my favorite item of the order. The salmon was fresh, flavorful, and the portion size was generous. The jalapeño isn't spicy, so it adds a nice touch without overpowering the fish. I also got the 3 hand roll set (cut rolls: yellowtail, spicy tuna, and salmon). These were decent but nothing special. The rice was a bit too firm for sushi rice, which threw off the texture.
