I wanted to stop by and eat at a Japanese restaurant. When I got there, I urgently needed to use the restroom before eating. They barely let me use it and initially wanted to send me outside, saying I couldn't use their restroom. Eventually, they showed me where the restroom was. After I came out, I needed to step outside to find my friends. At that point, one of the waitresses started yelling at me, saying that I should have used a different restroom. My miso soup came out cold with hard and chewy, tofu, and the server made up excuses instead of just taking it away and apologizing. The sushi was quite mediocre and overpriced. When I left, I misplaced my to-go bag and she had the audacity to tell me " it's not here and why would somebody take your bag" instead of I'm sorry, Let me see if I can find it. Unfortunate miss. First time trying this place, went for lunch, grabbed about 5 dishes off their lunch menu. Price was ok, maybe a little high in general for what you get. Also their dine in sit down menu looks extra pricey. Anyways parts of the food tasted weird. Particularly the rice. How does a Japanese restaurant get rice wrong? It tasted almst like they used soapy water to cook it. It was inedible. Something was also off with the tomato and beef in other dishes. We'd heard good buzz about this place, hidden in a small strip mall, and had to try it. We opted for a reservation at 5:30 and glad we did, as the place got packed after we arrived. The inviting funky atmosphere, quality menu, and seating in plush, red cushioned chairs made for a nice experience. I loved the asparagus appetizer, crunchy and drenched in yakitori sauce. The bento box we split was great-- savory crab sushi, spicy salad, tuna/salmon/yellowtail nigiri, and tempura. They have a nice variety of sakis, too. The food here was pretty bad. All those great pictures that you see up on Yelp of chirashi bowls and things like that?? All those photos are from 2022 and 2023, and Saloon Osaka doesn't even have that stuff on the menu any more. I went there, and the agedashi tofu was terrible... They used the wrong kind of tofu, so it wasn't fluffy and jiggly like it's supposed to be, but a dense, hard brick. And all of the nigiri sushi was bland and low quality. Looking around, everyone else in the place was eating those enormous, 20-item cut rolls full of spicy mayo and topped with stuff... I probably should've gotten the hint when I walked in, but all the photos on Yelp were so misleading about Saloon Osaka offering good, traditional Japanese sushi, which they most certainly no longer serve. I gave them a second star because all the staff were nice, and I really appreciate that. Still... I will not be going back here. read more

The tempura was light crispy and satisfying if very very slightly oily. The salad had an appropriate amount of bright zesty yuzu dressing, which complimented the crisp greens well. The blue crab had a nice unami, creamy avocado, and crackles of flavor from the sesame seeds. The yellowtail was less than really fresh but still had excellent flavor and a thick cut. Before dinner, we enjoyed some plane watching at Clutter's Park, which set a relaxed tone for the evening. The food was delicious-- we ordered the gyu-don, unagi avocado bowl, four handrolls (two toro and two salmon), and two pieces of aji nigiri. Each dish was thoughtfully prepared and full of flavor. However, when it got busy, service lagged a bit. One server seemed unfamiliar with the menu, and with only one sushi chef handling all tables, our waits stretched longer than expected. I'm updating my review because there have been multiple changes at Saloon Osaka. There are new chefs and staff. Menu items have changed a bit. Review for dinner Aug 13, 2025 Roberto, our server, was wonderful. His thoughtful and attentive service was one of the highlights of the evening. Hamachi Jalapeño Carpaccio $25 - Presentation, lovely. We had the jalapeño on the side. It is quite different from the yellowtail carpaccio that used to be on the menu. I miss the yellow carpaccio they used to have. But this dish was very tasty - just needed a little more fish. Rainbow Roll $23 - A solid rainbow roll. The fish was fresh. The presentation was lovely. Good but not the level of excellent as before. The rice was a little overcooked and seemed to not be of the same quality as they used to serve, same with the crab in the roll. Bluefin Tuna Handroll $11 - I picked up the handroll before taking a picture so the presentation was messed up a little by me replating it in order to take the picture. Fine, very standard tuna handroll. I think it was supposed to have tobiko on it but didn't. Admittedly, that could be something I was remembering from the previous menu. The rice was overcooked and there was a bit too much of it. There was also a bit too much shiso leaf. The handrolls here used to be works of art. Delicate, well balanced, with excellent fish being the star--and there was a more elevated presentation. FYI the karaage chicken is no longer on the menu. Aladdin Yuzu Junmai $19 (Might be too sweet for some but I love this. The bottle used to be $15. But the increase is understandable.) After we left I was going over the receipt and noticed there was a "non-cash fee (4.0%)" charge. This is something new. I understand it's on me for not having noticed and inquired about it while I was there. It's a small fee and I know times are tough. But it's just proper form for staff to explain to customers there is an additional charge on the bill. Let people know if paying by cash would mean the waiving of that charge. If I know a place prefers cash I try to support them by paying in cash when I can. Despite that misstep, I do believe the level of service hasn't really faltered. Roberto was great. I hate to lower my rating of this place but it's just no longer at the level it used to be. Right now, as is, it's a solid sushi spot. I think the new team is still figuring some stuff out. I really am rooting for them to be able to bring Saloon Osaka back up to the exquisite dining experience it used to be. read more

They were smaller than the cherry tomatoes, which were another thing I found strange about this dish. The flavor wasn't bad but I think it tasted more like a ceviche for some reason. I went with a friend with a gluten allergy and the server was able to help her easily navigate the menu options. The remodel that happened a while ago is great - really cool / unique lighting, seating and tables - more intimate and hip. Of course the food is the star - lots of sushi, sashimi, carpaccio and entree choices. There is some outdoor seating - nice in the warmer months. Well displayed. We probably got the largest cut of teriyaki salmon they had and stayed hot as we finished it slowly. Sushi was fresh. But what really made this a special night was the service. One of the best surprises of my quick trip to LA! I can always trust in Terry K. to recommend wonderful hidden gems, especially in LA. After our picnic party, Terry wanted to take me to Saloon Osaka which she raved of. Now, similar to other reviewers state this truly is a small, unassuming, and honestly a bit hard to come by spot. If it weren't for her, I wouldn't have ever known of it. It's on the side tucked away in the shared plaza. The restaurant is small and reminds me of an izakaya with the decor. Lots of fun artwork, decorations, and repurposed items. There's a small sushi bar plus a few seats spread throughout. Service by the owner, Keith, and Daniel was truly superb. Keith, the owner and sushi chef is truly the best. It was a blessing to sit at the sushi bar with him, talk about his business, and travel plans, and talk about Japan and Korea with him. Arigatou for letting me speak Japanese to you! Terry did all of the ordering--Edamame, Agedashi Tofu, and 8 Piece Assorted Sushi. We are also grateful for the courteous and complimentary sashimi we received from Chef Keith. The sashimi was out of this world. Each piece was extremely fresh, delicate, and buttery. It's rare to find places like this nowadays! The edamame was plentiful and the agedashi tofu was on point for flavor, portion, and texture. We have plans to come back soon, I can promise that. If time permitted, I'd come back again on my trip. This spot is worth taking time to visit if you're in the area. Located off West Imperial, it's in a small shopping plaza with free parking. Salmon, maguro, hamachi, some seared white fish and tamago topped with a scoop of ikura over a seasoned bed of rice. Just for the heck of it, I tried their assorted Tempura (this is my personal test on any establishment - the quality and freshness of the oil is important in Tempura) passed with flying tastebuds. There are 4 counter seats in front of the refrigerator of fish and other goodies. That's where I sat and had a fun conversation with the sushi man and owner and his waiter. I ordered a salmon belly nigiri, scallop nigiri, and salmon sashimi and they took over 30min to come out with only the salmon nigiri then about ten minutes later the sashimi and later the scallops. Nearly 50min later, my friend's curry came out. The salmon belly was good, but the sashimi and scallops were pretty mid. My friend enjoyed his avocado eel bowl, down side the wait time. My other friend said his curry bowl was mid and didn't even finish, he also ordered chicken with it, but his bowl didn't have any chicken !! Again the 50minute wait time is ridiculous. Now benefit of the doubt, he was new, but we were the only table and 3 of our items were forgotten. If you are looking for a "solid" fix of all the commonly served fish (Salmon, Tuna, Snapper, Fresh Water Eel, etc.) or a Bento box, maybe some ramen, etc. this is your place. Nothing imaginative or memorable. Kind of like going to a 4.6 star Chinese restaurant and ending up with Panda Express. The price points are worthy of a much better experience, the type of experience you get when you sit at a sushi bar and the chef is entertaining and conjures up something special.
