With Saloon in the name, this restaurant never hit my radar. And I don't live very far. However, a few weeks ago, I decided to drop in as I had a craving for Sake. And like I said, I don't live far Pulled into the parking lot. Very cramped. Tight spaces. I parked on the street. It's a frontage road running parallel to Imperial Highway. Lots of parking. Free. I don't know what the restrictions are/were - but I know I was good. Check the signs. I don't remember. Like I said ... a few weeks ago Walked in. Greeted immediately. I mention it so you can expect it as soon as you walk in. I think I'd feel out of place if I walked into a Ramen or Sushi joint and wasn't greeted. The energetic greeting went with the service. Attentive. Friendly. The evening I went by, it wasn't busy. But I'm sure the service would probably still be just as good As for the food - like I always say, see pics. And like I sometimes say when the food is delicious AF - the pics don't do the food any justice. Fresh. Decent portion size. It was tasty enough for me that I kept ordering. All the pics were me. And only me. Because I'm a fatty like that. And yes, Saloon Osaka gets my, I'll definitely be back rating. read more

Fresh and tasty fish, great selection for sake and beer, lovely service and nice location

Came in as soon as it opens. The atmosphere was great. Love the art give a modern Japanese American feel. Service is great. Our waiter was very knowledgeable when it came to selecting a type of sake and food. The water was room temperature. But to me that's great that how you know they use good tasting and quality water and not bad tasing tap water hidden by ice and lemon. My wife got the udon noodle that was really good the nori was very flavorful. I got the beef curry with the chicken karaage. That was really good. The portions were great. Our experience at Saloon Osaka was alright; The ambiance was intimate, the chef and waiter were kind, and the food was decent. We had two toro cut rolls (they were supposed to be hand rolls but there was a mix up, the waiter had an explaination for that but I didn't quite understand), an avocado roll, mixed tempura, one miso soup, and one large hot sake, which totalled about $85. Everything was tasty, albeit overpriced in my opinion. I do wish to note that the most recent photo someone posted of the menu on here are not accurate, and they have raised their prices since those photos were taken. The miso soup was a bit of a let down, as there was no seaweed, green onion, or tofu, but hey, it was the cheapest thing on the menu at $3. While dissapointed that we received toro cut rolls as opposed to hand rolls, the quality of the fish was good. The tempura was fresh and crisp, however some of the hearty vegetables were cut a bit thick and did not appear to be blanched before hand, so they were pretty hard. That said, it was still good overall. The avocado roll, which I ended up taking to go, was still delicious the next day as the avocado was the perfect level of ripe. Our hot sake was served lukewarm, but the quality of sake was good. While we tend to stick with just a house hot sake when getting sushi, they did have a large selection of cold sake available. Overall, we enjoyed our meal, but in our book i would categorize Saloon Osaka as a "one-and-done" kind of place. I'm glad we tried it, but weren't impressed to the point of having a desire to return. While it wouldn't be on my list of south bay sushi recommendations, I would not dissuade anyone from giving it a try either. read more

Had been meaning to try this restaurant for a while but the timing never seemed right until yesterday. Reservations were easy to make online and our table was waiting for us--in fact it was a semi private one for two, although I hadn't let them know we were celebrating a major anniversary. We each had a bento box which allowed the choice of either a blue crab or California roll, as well as sushi (the fish was excellent). Both bentos come with a seaweed salad and assorted tempura, which was lightly battered and nice and crisp. We finished our meal with a special treat, thanks to our waiter when he learned we were celebrating. Service was excellent and parking is available either in a lot or on the adjoining quiet street. The restaurant itself is reminiscent of many where we ate while in Japan. read more

What a hidden gem right outside of LAX. We had a perfect sushi fix before heading back to where we can't find decent sushi. It's a small place where only one server and one sushi chef were working (at the time we were there on Sunday night). Hidden away in a small strip center near a 7-11. Not exactly where you would expect to have excellent sushi, but don't let the location fool you. Find it, go there, and enjoy! Saloon Osaka is a hidden gem that's only a short drive away from LAX! Don't be dismayed upon approaching as it isn't in the best area. It's part of an old strip mall that has only a couple parking spots (and is a little hard and tight to get in and out of because of the one ways), but Saloon Osaka is in its own section on the side. Their building itself is nice with Japanese decor, a cute al fresco section out in front, and a fresh looking sushi chef counter that greets you upon entering. We tried their premium chirashi bowls, and the selection and freshness of the fish was impressive. I especially liked their uni that was sourced straight from Japan -- the chef said sometimes it will be from Santa Barbara. This was all atop seasoned rice that was somehow still warm even though I'm a slow eater, which was an awesome contradiction with the cold cuts of sashimi. The sake and beer selection here are pretty unique. You can either pick from the menu or point to the bottles on display at the back wall. The original nigori is a great starter for your palate or a finisher. read more

Omg. How did we just find Saloon Osaka? Once you go inside, you forget that you're in a strip mall on Imperial across from LAX. It's a fun environment, with not that many tables. I don't want to say that they were slow, I think they were very busy and that's just how it goes. Although, it did take a while to get drinks ordered. It felt like at least 15 minutes. I ate at Saloon Osaka the other day on a recommendation from a friend. I ordered a coffee and they told me cofre isn't available, it takes to long to get the espresso machine set up. Ok, not a good start but soda water will do. That was a no go also so I went with still water. I ordered rice and an avocado roll. I asked for GF soy sauce which they said they would bring right out. It never came out. When I looked over my shoulder I was told they couldn't find it. My friend ordered the Jessica Roll. The menu said Jessical roll so that's how she ordered it and the waitress corrected her, even though that's how It is on the menu. It was just an odd exchange. Tucked away gem in El Segundo. Fresh fish, good variety and a small business worth supporting. Sushi isn't hard to come by in the South Bay but a cute out-of-the-way place that isn't a noisy, crowded scene is a welcome change. The fish is always fresh and well prepared. Never had a bad cut of any fish they serve. Plus they make a great curry - my favorite. So if you're not in the mood for sushi, they have you covered. Highly recommended read more

Picked up Hubbers at the nearby LAX and he mentioned hunger-ism, so off to Yelp he went and found this place. Interesting enough, I had this placed bookmarked as one of my "must-try's" (I made the discovery when I ate next door...) I'll admit it's fallen off my radar, good thing Hubbers did the rediscovery. There were only a couple of tables occupied so we were seated immediately. Menu isn't extravagant - simple but great choices. Oddly enough, I felt hungry all of a sudden! TUNA AND YELLOW TAIL NIGIRI: Good start! Both fish were fresh. The only (not so big deal) issue I had with these is that the rice fell apart very easily. Otherwise, okay. UNI CAVIER IN THE SPOON: Fantastic presentation. Sadly, this was a disappointment. I've had my share of uni at other places, and I gotta say, both the roe and the uni on this spoon were not fresh. They were both slimy and tasted old. I had small bites of each and that's as far as it went. Hubbers liked it, so there's at least that. BAKED MISO SALMON COLLAR: Also great presentation. First few bites were great, strong but not too overpowering taste of miso. But the deeper we got into the bites, the more I realized it wasn't cooked through and through. It would have been much better (or closer to perfect) if it was left in the grill/broiler for another few minutes. FLOATING ISLAND: Hubbers recently has had a taste for scallops, so this was a go-to. Great sauce, fresh scallops. This I liked. LAX ROLL (not pictured): I liked this one as well. This was Hubbers' pick and it's a good one. There was nothing I didn't like about this. FOOD: 2.5. The wasabi packets should have been a good tell of what was to come. (This might be a first for me, I usually get fresh wasabi at all the sushi places I've been to.) However, 3/5 [the LAX roll, the nigiri and (maybe) the floating island] were the saving grace. Unfortunately, those were all Hubber's choices. The other two were mine and both were booboo. SERVICE: 5. This, they excelled on. I made our server aware of my experience here - not withholding the fact that Hubber's was better than mine. He took it and responded well saying he appreciated it and of course, they like being made aware. What I liked even more is that he relayed this to the chef who took the time to come to our table and acknowledged our concerns. I expressed that the only take away I preferred is that they have this info and to use it in the future. VALUE: 1. Really pricey. Meh. PARKING: Small private lot shared with others. It's always packed. Street parking also available. Plan accordingly. OVERALL: 2.75. I thought this was a one-and done, but after the encounter with staff, I will give them another shot at it. Best tempura I've ever had in LA - perfect temperature and frying time for different ingredients. The Kungpao shrimp is so creative and the taste is very authentic Szechuan Kungpao style. And they have the imported Japanese beer and sake. I had the Matcha beer for the first time it's marvelous with the fish that blends the sweetness and the seafood taste. I stopped by Salon Osaka on my way to pickup family at LAX. I had taken a peek at the menu prior to arriving and it looked very authentic, at least in my opinion. It was a quiet night, just me in the restaurant and some to go orders. Restaurant is very small, maybe only 30 seats. The interior is beautifully decorated, more unique than a normal restaurant. FOOD 5/5 The fish quality is unmatched. Portions are on the small side and I ended up paying quite a bit, but that being said, I'm a very large dude, 6'3" and linebacker sized, so your mileage may vary. The sushi and hand rolls were incredibly fresh. Seared toro was phenomenal. Salmon was firm and flavorful (fresh). Uni was excellent. Bluefin tuna was excellent. California roll was good. Tempura was alright. The miso soup was ridiculously salty, but you wouldn't go here for soup. SERVICE 4/5 Service was friendly and the food came out fast, but I had to ask for refills a few times. The chef and server were very nice. I sat by the bar and the chef and I had a great conversation. Always nice to have a good sushi bar convo. VALUE 3/5 The price you pay gets you very high quality fish and excellent ingredients. For hungrier appetities, it's gonna be hard to get full without spending a lot. I originally came here because I saw a picture of a beef bowl on yelp but was disappointed to see it was not on the menu. I ordered the following while dining here: 1. Sukiyaki: Only went for this since there was no beef bowl. $30 was pretty steep! The beef was soft but had to use a chopstick to pull it apart. 2. Beef skewer: This was pretty good! I thought to myself I should have just ordered 5 pieces of this with rice in place of my beef bowl craving. 3. Sushi and hand-roll: Nothing special 4: Oyster: The waitress told me they had large oysters but when it came out, large was an understatement. The oysters were gigantic!!! My mother and I started going to this restaurant from the Maki Yaki days. We've always loved the food, the friendly staff members, and exceptionally amazing owners, and WOW...!!! We were so nicely surprised by this amazing new place Saloon Osaka!! They have done an extraordinary job decorating the place with authentic art pieces like Ukiyoe (浮世絵), kakajiku and even a beautiful Byoubu from Kyoto, mixed with a tasteful dose of modern vibes! The food was even more delicious than I could recall it's a shame that I can't give 10 stars here! They have everything from sushi to bento boxes, to bowls, to down home japanese Izakaya style a la carte items! My mother and I highly recommend Saloon Osaka in every way! My wife and I dined at Saloon Osaka for the first time today. A hidden gem in El Segundo only open Tuesday through Sunday 5pm to 10pm. The food was delicious, the atmosphere (once you get past the 7-11 strip-mall parking lot) was clean, pleasant, and very comfortable. The service was outstanding. We felt like we were visiting friends. We ordered Gyoza and Edamame for appetizers. Both were excellent. The Edamame was served hot smothered in a delicious spicy hot garlic sauce. The serving was generous and as an appetizer could have served 4 (but my wife and I put a good dent in it). The Gyoza was hot and crispy. We will order both again. My wife (a lite eater) ate from my plate and ordered the green dragon roll. It was tasty and beautiful to the eye. I ordered a bento box combo that included seaweed salad, excellent crispy and light mixed tempura, California rolls, and sushi. I ordered the standard California rolls made with imitation crap, but California rolls made with blue crab was an option. The bento box could be ordered with 2, 4, or pieces of sushi. I opted for 2 and at the chef's recommendation I ordered the blue fin tuna sushi (and then asked for it to be seared). I have never had blue fin tuna so fresh. I do not like fish that tastes or smells fishy and the tuna was perfect for me. The meal came with ginger and standard wasabi, but I ordered the fresh wasabi having never tried it. I am glad I did. It was strong and delicious and did I mention strong. All in all a wonderful meal and an excellent dining experience. The meal came to $75, and we left a generous well deserved tip. read more
