There was a short wait to be seated and while its extremely cold outside mid-December, they brought each table portable heaters that kept us so toasty!! Food was on point - crispy tempura, buttery fresh fish and veggies. Washed it all down with piping hot green tea. We loved every moment. Service is so friendly and quick. So I turn to my ol' friend, Yelp and I searched. Sushi Beluga caught my eye with words like "fresh," "best Japanese food I have had outside of Japan," "chef buys his own fish," etc. I've known about Sushi Beluga for almost 10 years - I never thought anything of it because it's in a strip mall in PDR...(shame on me, I know). Let's just get down to it. We ordered for take out: salmon aburi sushi, salmon miso aburi sushi, yellowtail belly sushi, albacore sushi, a lemon salmon roll and some apps like plain edamame, miso soup, gyoza. Miso soup is twice the size of most sushi places and twice the flavor!!! Really loved this miso soup, most sushi places have miso soup that kinda taste off for unknown reason (maybe they're made quickly) but this was fantastic. Simple but done right. Edamame, great, salty, squirty. Gyoza was only 4 per order, but the taste was great and tasted homemade because the ginger stood out. Salmon aburi...fantastic. Salmon miso aburi...so good I could eat an entire meal of only salmon miso aburi. Yellowtail belly was buttery and fresh. Albacore was standard, fresh. Lemon salmon roll. Different, but really tasty. Honestly, blown away. That's why I'm here writing this review. Not what I expected. I was hoping it would be good but it was GREAT! Everything was so FRESH, thoughtful, and full of flavor. Some of the best Japanese food I have had outside of Japan and at a reasonable price. The food is fresh and prepared with care. I had the sashimi roll, which is a no rice roll of salmon, avocado and crab (real crab), wrapped in cucumber. The portions of each ingredient were perfectly balanced. My husband had a two item combination with salmon teriyaki and a spicy tuna roll, which came with miso soup, green salad, sunomono and rice. The teriyaki was savory and not too sweet. The tuna was fresh tasting with a good hot pepper flavor. We liked that the pieces were actually bite sized. Salads, rice and soup were all very good. We almost never order dessert, but the red bean mochi ice cream with little swirls of whipped cream was a nice ending to a wonderful meal. The menu is large and is a reasonable compromise between strictly traditional Japanese fare and items that are not too unusual for the local palate. The restaurant is casual, spotlessly clean and has indoor and outdoor seating. Our Japanese server (possibly an owner?) was kind, professional and efficient. All the food was a little grayish looking and definitely not fresh! The lesson I learned is DON'T GET SUSHI ON A MONDAY -- they use all of the leftovers from the weekend. Nothing looked or tasted good/fresh -Frustratingly, there is NO way to contact the restaurant! The phone does not pickup (called multiple times!) and there is no contact info on their website. They've purposely made themselves unreachable! This is not good business practice! -We requested low sodium soy sauce and lemon and received none. We put this in the notes, which they should be reading! It's part of our order!
