I hadn't done anything to my hair in about 2 plus years and let my gray roots come in. My hubby is retiring soon (he's my silver haired fox) so I decided to finally embrace my gray, too. The hair that Adriana had to deal with was "virgin" hair untouched by processing but very fine. I don't know anything about balayage (and that it works from the tips to the root, not vice-versa) so she helpfully showed me a few pics of gray highlighting and we were set to go. I love the ambience there; very chillax. This happened right between Thanksgiving and Christmas and you get burnt out on all the bouncy music everywhere you go. Luckily, I picked a very quiet establishment with just soft jazzy versions of the holiday stuff. The many live plants as decor really adds to the spa vibe. Make sure you keep your voices low so as not to disturb other patrons, many of whom are fellow Asians like me. I read on their website about the "Head Spa" that they do, which is kind of a 20/40/60 minute facial but for your scalp. Those chairs are so comfy you will, if you're not careful, fall asleep. Every major service (cut and highlights for me) will include a scalp massage. They block out the overhead lights and you feel like you're floating lying down. I might come back regularly for this alone. I recommend this place for people who have stress headaches. They say they use pure jojoba and help exfoliate your scalp. The total for a long hair cut was $94 and the cost of highlights was $325. You put down $100 deposit with your credit card when you make the appointment and they don't cash it until your service is complete. Make sure you're on time or early (I suggest at least 15 mins) or you will be charged 100% penalty. Parking is limited to behind Lake Ave in "Shoppers Lane." If they run out of spots you can also park at the Trader Joe's (west side of Lake) and just buy something there so you can get validated. It was pricey but well worth it. My stylist advised that I come in every few months for toner rinse to keep the highlights bright since the gray will just come in naturally after that. Don't be afraid to do it! EDIT: The haircut itself actually looks nice after looking at it. I was just in shock with the bangs & then having to pay $120 w this on my head. I had straight across bangs when I walked in so it's not like I don't like bangs on me. They just look like I cut them myself & messed up LOL but I styled them myself just now & it's a little better. . I had such a great experience with Reyka last time so I'm quite disappointed in my experience this time with Yuri. She was very kind but I don't think she asked enough questions throughout the process to know what I wanted. I know it's hard to get 100% exactly what you want unless the stylist can read your mind so I really don't mind it looking a little different. But, the photo I took as soon as I got in the car shows how she sent my bangs out the door... which... I have textured hair but I look like I got smacked by a tornado It was $120 for this :( I drove out from west LA because I really trusted this salon but I think... it's time to find a different one or try Reyka again :( read more

I don't have any complaints about the cut or the styling itself - it was fine... it didn't blow my mind away where I had to return to see them regularly but neither bad. I think the most disappointing part of the entire experience was Yuta. He was quiet... kind of distant, kind of cold and off-putting. He didn't really seem friendly which kind of made things awkward. Brought my mom to this tucked away gem to have her hair done and what an experience we had. Adriana interestingly enough was a former student at my place of employment. She did an amazing transition for my mom who had not had her hair done in some time and she loved it. If you can't take stairs though it may be difficult, as it's located on the 2nd floor. They offer you sparkling or flat water, tea and are just very ind people. Made her feel right at home. It was very clean and airy as well. Definitely recommend this studio. I am absolutely over the moon with this place! I booked my appointment through their website, which was different from what I'm used to. They ask a few questions and request a photo of your hair, along with a deposit that goes toward your service. Surprisingly, I actually appreciated this process because it shows how professional they are, and how serious I am. I had the pleasure of booking with Kai, who was sooooo incredibly kind and attentive. She really listened to what I wanted and gave me a 30-minute consultation to share her thoughts on my hair. I ended up getting a trim and a balayage with highlights. The entire process took about five hours-ish? Kai was meticulous with every step, making sure the color was even. Even the hair wash was amazing. I really appreciated all the small details she paid attention to. The service was exceptional. Kai checked in often to see if I was thirsty, cold, or needed a break. She was very considerate and also respected that I had brought my laptop and wasn't looking to chat much. My only critique is that the parking is only free for 90 minutes and they don't accept walk-ins. Aside from that, everything else was a huge plus. The end result??? Flawless!!! read more

I got my hair Japanese straightened back in the end of October. For context, I have gotten my hair Japanese straightened four times now. Once in NYC, once before at Pinok, once in India at a new salon that was running a major discount, and once again here. I came back here in large part because it was so close AND because I had previously had a positive experience. The past three times, even with some warnings, in practice I NEVER had to blow dry or flat iron my hair straight -- it NATURALLY dried straight and SUPER silky, and my roots would get greasy by Day 5 but conversely my hair wash days were my best hair days. That is the outcome I wanted, and the whole reason I bother subjecting my hair to this kind of damage. I never had to think about what shampoos or conditioners I used, etc. This time, however, I got my hair done by Adriana, and I hate to say this (especially since she told me a story about another client who requested her own modifications to her hair coloring treatment and then blamed the stylist for it not turning out the way she wanted), but she did NOT do a good job with it. From the get go, I needed to blow dry it for it to REMOTELY sit flat, and EVEN THEN, after a few washes, blowdrying did not suffice to have it lay flat. Now, even if I blow dry it, it's frizzy and poofy and WAVY by the end of the NIGHT. And my hair wash days are the worst hair days, just like before, and I have to condition the crap out of my hair multiple times for it to finally feel soft (just like before). I had some hair at the ends left that had been previously straightened, so MAYBE trying to only straighten the "fresh" half backfired, but if retouching is offered as a service, it should be legit, and since the entire top half of my hair was wavy, there was definitely more wiggle room to work with than a true retouching. But as far as what I'm left with, it's just as bad as before, which is dumb and defeats the point of a Japanese straightening. I might as well have gotten a Brazilian Keratin treatment, which would've been cheaper and probably better for my hair. And my ends are more prone to split ends than they were in previous iterations of Japanese straightening. Mind you, I use Carol's Daughter hair products, which are sulfate free (though in the past I never even had to worry about that -- my hair straightening lasted regardless of what hair products I used). So I am well aware of what a good Japanese straightening treatment can do for MY hair SPECIFICALLY. This was NOT IT at ALL, and it distresses me that Japanese straightening is the type of thing that you can't redo fully and purely to fix it. read more

Although my haircut came out fine it definitely was not worth $150. Many other salons have given me the same quality of haircuts for $80. When I arrived I had been sitting for about 15-20 minutes until I was attended and the place just seemed overbooked which I believe is valid and I never complain but I hope for better if I'm paying quality prices especially because there was a time limit for the free parking. When beginning to cut my hair my part wasn't centered to how I have it regularly so the cut came out uneven. In addition to this I had my legs crossed and wasn't told to uncross them but luckily from previous experiences I knew to correct the posture so it didn't come out uneven. I definitely don't believe that cut was worth what I paid and will look elsewhere. I can't speak on other services as I'm sure they're very talented at what they do just not for cutting. Made an appointment with Yuta for haircut. My haircut is a little bit unique (jellyfish cut which is essentially half bob cut with a long section at the back), which is why I booked with Yuta specifically since I saw most bob cut photos were cut by Yuta and having a good stylist to cut the bob is very important. The cut started off well as he cut my hair before washing it, and the hair wash and massage was also great, but after the wash, I was told Yuta was done with the cut. My bangs looked unfinished and uneven. The bob was not straight so I asked for more fine tuning. After a quick fix, Yuta was done and the cut looked fine at the salon but it was hard to see details. When I got home and brushed my hair, I noticed chunks of hair that I needed to cut myself to even out the bob and overall the bob does not hold up to close inspection. I expected more attention to detail considering I paid $135 for the owner to cut, and for the hairstylist to not even check the cut after washing and drying and I had to ask for fine tuning. This has never happened at my other hair cuts. The redeeming part of my experience was the hair wash and head massage. read more

But my favorite is how they massage your head when they shampoo, it's like a mini-head spa. I go to Yuta for my haircut, he achieves the cut that I like. He spent maybe 10 minutes cutting my hair and without a word to me went to another customer he seemed to like leaving someone else to dry my hair. I had scheduled a color and cut a week in advance, providing my credit card for a $100 deposit, which I was informed would be charged if I canceled within 24 hours. Since I was told the appointment could take up to four hours, I completely rearranged my work schedule, took a day off and canceling other commitments to accommodate the time needed. Less than an hour before my appointment, I received a text from the stylist, Natalie, saying she wasn't feeling well and needed to go to urgent care. However, she then continued texting me for another 30 minutes, trying to reschedule my appointment for the following week. Because I can't take off another day of work next week, I asked if she could see me on Saturday or Sunday, but the salon was not able to accommodate me. If I would be charged a cancelation fee, why doesn't the business hold itself to the same standard and offer more flexibility to accommodate their customers in situations like this? read more

I've been here 3 times. Once for a cut, 2 times for color/root touchup and 1 time for a scalp treatment. It's the little details that make this place great. 1. The salon is modern and cozy. 2. Kind of random, but the sink station chairs are comfortable and the head rest is amazing. I only say this because many salons make you strain your neck as they wash your color out. 3. You get a head massage for free when they wash out your color. Honestly, it's the kind of extra service you pay for elsewhere. 4. They have quality amenities, hair dryers, even their smocks are cool and comfortable with hand holes! 5. They have a salon dog. Always a good sign! 6. Expect a level of care and respect from them as this is a Japanese style salon. It's just different than many American salons- also, I think they sort of leave it to clients to see if they want to talk during the service. Again, I feel like that a nice touch that is often a cultural consideration. 7. They have Japanese hair care products. I will never go back to other brands. These products work!!! 8. For all that you get, this salon is very reasonably priced. 9. Their stylists seem to have their own style. Cool girls with green hair and awesome cuts.. etc. 10. Parking. It was my first time trying Pinok Studio in Pasadena. I was looking for a hair salon near my place and Pinok Studio was in the top 5 of my searches. I picked this salon because my sister always had good words for Japanese salons, however, her salon was far from me. I was so excited when I saw one in Pasadena. So I booked an appointment with Reyka on June 30, 2025. What I liked about Pinok Studio was how I was treated, Reyka was friendly and respectful. She listened to what I wanted for my hair, and she explained her approach to my badly damaged hair. You see, my hair's length is up to my waist, and I still want it to be long with style. Also, my hair has different colors, and I want to have a brown shade which will be easier to manage, and I can do the color myself. Usually, I always cut my hair short because of the damage but Reyka explained that I can still have my hair long, however she will have to do different styles of coloring. This will accomplish the brown shade look without damaging my hair further. I also opted to have a head spa that will boost the health of my hair and scalp. OMG, the result was stunning!!! I looked younger with the color and style of my hair ! I thought it was impossible to achieve this, but Reyka did it! It took 5 1/2 hours, Reyka didn't even had a break or had lunch! My hair now is healthy and shiny, and my scalp is not itchy and red as before. It was worth the wait! I finally have my salon!!! I will have a beautiful hair and healthy scalp!
