My husband and I tried this place for the first time and we are definitely going back. The food was amazing. The staff (especially at the bar) have zero spark or joy and must have no supervisor around because as I stood waiting for my order I could see them ignoring customers when it was obvious there were people waiting for service. But, that matters little - as the food here is just not very good. I'll focus on the ribs - which were strangely tough. I'm guessing they weren't cooked long enough - there was cartilage throughout and a layer of fat on top and a weird thin skin on the bottom. They lacked any taste of smoke, or rub, or bark, or any seasoning or cooking technique at all. They were - without exaggeration - the least impressive and worst ribs I have ever purchased. Similarly, the small side of mac & cheese ($7!) was served barely above room temperature, with under-cooked pasta a thin tasteless sauce that lacked flavor. Not impressed. Came here for the gluten free options. The Mac and cheese is boring and not much better than a box of GF Mac and cheese. The burger lacks seasoning and are tiny patties. The "seasoned" fries were actually crispy but they were just loaded with salt and nothing else. The pulled pork sandwich is just pork with no bbq sauce but is a decent serving size. When I walked in, I had high hopes. The space is gorgeous and the menu looks good. However, I stood at the register for a few minutes without being greeted, all the time being ogled by the staff with a "why is he here?" look. A gentleman in kitchen clothes told me to order at the bar, and when I tried to the staff just stared at me in confusion. I went back to the front to order, and I asked the guy who appeared at the register about what I should try for my first time, he replied "honestly I don't like any of the BBQ, I like the chicken sandwich." Like... you work at a BBQ spot????? I got the pulled pork sandwich ($18 after tip and tax) and received the TINIEST sandwich I have ever seen. The house made sauces dispensers were basically empty. Absolutely incredible! We ordered catering for a group of 8 adults and 4 kids and it was smiles all around. The brisket melted in your mouth and the GIANT beef ribs literally fell off the bone in the best way possible. Sides and veggies were on point (and the spicy/smoky sour cream on the sweet potatoes - WOW). Finally a real deal bbq spot! Came here with a Few friends to check it out. Great bbq and drinks in a unique, renovated historic train station building! The vibe is chill and relaxed, good beer and cocktail selection and great food. The brisket is awesome as is everything we ate. The wings, sausage, pork....and the fried chicken. Def get the fried chicken. It's counter service and you seat yourself...which was great. Live Doors playing in the background. And huge screen TVs with the different games on if your into that. Ordered a ton of food for pick up, they forgot to put the chicken tenders in the order. Ribs were decent and so was the wedge salad. The mac and cheese has a weird flavor and Kraft is better. The cornbread was undercooked and inedible due to that, it also is very dense and is missing something. The dip and old bay chips are just ruffles with some old bay. Back for our 2nd visit this past week to give it another chance and sadly, it will be our last time. Our wings were overcooked into oblivion, and they were all out of their most popular sides dishes. We ended up with the cucumber salad which was actually decent and provided a good respite from the over salted waffle fries and wings. I first went here for one of their Thursday Trivia Nights. We got the mac n cheese (2.7/5), chicken tenders (3.5/5), and smokehouse nachos (3/5). Seat yourself, order your food, and pick it up when it's ready. Staff periodically come by to take away dirty dishes, and at the end of your stay you can bus your table and drop off remaining dirty dishes and trays. There is abundant indoors and outdoors long bench-like seating. When I looked online for the menu and saw the description/mission "just a coupla dudes on a mission to make tasty barbecue" it definitely clicked / made sense for me. The menu does seem to be a bit eclectic / random / geared towards foods people would chose to eat more often if they were drinking. We spent a while trying to figure out the decor decisions of this restaurant, which seemed to be multiple and conflicting (in a kind of acceptable millennial way). There was one flat screen tv playing a continuous slide show of ocean and fish clips, and sports games on others. It was an energetic place and fun to play trivia at (4/5), but definitely the food could be better (3/5). read more

There's a new sheriff in town. And they're serving up some of the best ribs I've had this side of the Carolinas. Not sure about the name, Pineapple Express, but I'm pretty sure they have their reasons. I am sure that these are the most succulent, perfectly seasoned, most expertly smoked dry rub ribs you'll find around these parts. When ribs are this expertly prepared there's no need to slather them in sauce, so if need be dip sparingly to suit your own taste. I didn't try any of the sides or other fixin's on this visit, but yer darn tootin' that I'll be back again and again to sink my teeth into the chicken, brisket, Mac n' Cheese and any other real deal BBQ these folks are offering up. read more

We had the misfortune of patronizing during the Montclair Jazz fest on Saturday 8/12/23. I was ordering drinks for my friend who was Blind. After ordering drinks I ask my buddy for his card so we could pay. I was given a pad to enter my PIN for my credit card. This was the second transaction. The attendance snatched the pad away from me after i entered my pin to hit the No Receipt button to keep me from asking for a receipt. When I complained why she said No receipt. This would not have been an issue if I were a regular but I'm a out of towner here for the concert. I wanted my receipt. A young man standing next to her stepped and and accused me of yelling at his staff. Which was nothing close to what happened. We were standing next to the concert stage. It was LOUD, you had to speak in somewhat of a louder voice to be heard. That was just the beginning he asked for my card. He swiped it two to three times then said he could not find our order which was just moments ago. Then handed the card back to me and told me to leave and he took another customer and tried to ignore us. When I told him we were not satisfied with that and he had to complete the transaction with us before taking another customer ,He said he would call the Police if we did not leave. Shocking and horrible. He was so, so, unprofessional, nasty, rude, and now threatening to escalate a customer ask for receipt into a Police issue. My buddy who just happens to be a retired Police officer, said we should leave and fight this later. So this is later. The drinks were weak and watered down slushy, not good at all. The service the PIT's. I am going to complain to the local Chamber of Commerce and the Site Manager for the Jazz concert. BTy I mentioned that to him that I met the site Mgr. I just went for lunch at Pineapple Express in Montclair May 28th, 2023. I ordered a wedge salad. They gave me a tossed salad, not a wedge, and had no tomatoes which is one of the four ingredients in a wedge.salad I asked and they said they have no tomatoes so they put a single solitary sun-dried tomato in. I don't know what kind of restaurant doesn't have tomatoes. In that case, they should run to the supermarket and buy a couple boxes. The Mac and cheese seemed homemade but wasn't that special. Top shelf BBQ can be had in Jersey, and Pineapple Express is proof of that. It's a super cool space that use to be a train station. Lots of thoughtful design/decor touches through the restaurant. You order your food at a separate window then pick it up. If you want beverages you can go to the bar area. If you just want some water, they have 2 water stations set up. There were 4 in our crew, so we got to sample a lot of the menu. Excellent brisket, smoked turkey and ribs. The ribs were firm and tender, the perfect consistency. The brisket had well rendered fat!! The sides were outstanding. Banging Buffalo cauliflower, dynamite beets with a side of killer horseradish sauce, excellent, crispy waffle fries. Some large screen tvs were spread around the restaurant, so it's a great place to watch a game. A band was also playing some kick ass tunes. It was a mix of families and adults enjoying the space. High ceilings, picnic tables, stellar music, original train station tiles on the walls and floor. Attentive bartenders pour eclectic drafts and cocktails to accompany the fine fair. Everything was excellent- I was a bit worried about the previous day pickup and reheating- but their instructions were foolproof and really worked. All our guests commented on how good the food was - thank you to the team!! Restaurant was pretty full. It's a self serve situation so went up to the window to order. I expected big portions for a bbq place so ordered brisket, fried chicken, cauliflower appy and large mac and cheese side. It came up to almost 60 bucks. I expected for $60 I would be able to feed 2 adults and a 6&7 year old. I was wrong. Food was not bad tasting but for the price I expected more. The large size of Mac and cheese seemed like a small to me although GF and it was tasty. The $9 cauliflower appy was for one person. Fried chicken was tasty and the only thing I would recommend. Brisket was ok. I am still hangry and refuse to spend more. I'd rather go home and make a pb&j. I think with some portion or price adjustments, they have potential. Nothing bbq tasting about it. And def not fresh off the bone turkey that I expected when I ordered based on that being my experience at other bbq places. The manager veronica is so unprofessional she basically has no idea what's even on the menu and couldn't answer any questions regarding the menu. the bartender stuck her fingers in my drink when there was apparently something floating in the drink trying to get it out and figured i wasn't looking. i'm pretty sure i saw mouse droppings on the floor and i'm sure i saw dead flies on the window sills. Been a few times and meh at best. Very incredible brisket one night; same night very mediocre dried up ribs with a slather more like ketchup than a sauce, not very good slaw either. Another time a decent lobster roll, but not decent enough that I would order it again. Recently a terrible wedge salad unless you love creamy blue cheese and sun-dried tomatoes in place of more traditional tomato and bleu crumbles. And once again, dried and unsatisfying half rack baby back ribs. I keep thinking it will get better and not sure if a fourth visit is in the cards. Wish I had better things to say. Went with a few friends. Food wasn't good it was soggy and very underwhelming. No taste. Also they gave us a appetizer that we didn't ask for and it was basically naked nachos nothing on it. Paid for it anyway Super overpriced. Doesn't even smell like a bbq place when you walk in. Saw a couple at the bar making out and flashing eachother. Drinks were good though. i never write reviews. no matter how bad. but this was just... bad. i should've known this was going to be a bad experience when we parked and didn't even smell barbecue. we get here and a woman is literally flashing her boobs to a guy at the bar in front of the hundred kids running around. the bartenders are serving right in front of them and just let it happen. as we tried to just pretend that wasn't happening, we order food and every single thing we got was terrible. the hot dog was a boiled hot dog that's less appetizing than a ballpark frank, the wings were pink and slimey, and the 22 dollar lobster rolls were so soggy the "buns" soaked in goop fell apart before my first bite. the nachos had literally nothing on them. a couple jalapeños and that was about it. a "sauce" was placed on a chip or two, but you'd be better off going to quick check for tostitos and dip for a couple bucks. the staff was nice, but everything else was just awful. hate to have to even write this. but after the literal 200 bill for food and drinks, we can't seem to justify what we got. zero stars read more
