I am a Greenpoint native, born and raised. My mother is from Rzeszow, my step-father, from Gdynia. All of us were with my younger siblings over the weekend for dinner, ready to scope the place out. We've seen our neighborhood change a lot over the last 5 years, and we were really ready to loveeeeee this place.
Service~~
As a Polish WOC, I got some weird looks from our server (yes I'm used to the weird looks in Greenpoint by now, but I'm also a familiar face in the neighborhood, so I really only expect them when I visit Poland). My family noticed it too, as we've dealth with this for years. Perhaps she was new? We asked her for extra plates for our "family-share" style meal, and got them 15 minutes after we asked, when we were done with our meal of course... She was a bit scattered and seemed very impatient with our family when we were ordering. Perhaps no experience serving a family with kids, ages 10-13? Her body language yelllllllled of "please finish your order so I can move on to the next table." Getting her attention was a bit tough, and being friendly with her seemed like it wasn't in her interests. I mean, I'm not here to be best friends with you but my fam and I are locals and we came with love and were met with a lot of cold feelin... Water was not refilled, updates weren't said (as she placed one dish, to be able to say "I'll be back with the rest of your plates in a minute!"), and yallllll just bad energy... We left a large tip anyway because it's all love in the end~
I think my 3 star review moreso reflects the feelings we were left with at this place, because as a fam we all agreed the energy from her was cold and really unconcerned about us... Service: 4/10
Food~~
The red barszcz (barszcz czerwony) was on the sour and thin side. If you're into that, cool! But I was raised on a heartier taste, and so this soup reminded me of some concentrate from Biedronka mixed with water.
**The pierogi dough was STELLAR. YES! For those of you new to polish cooking, this is TOUGH to do. They achieved some beautiful work, but they go real thin on the stuffing for what you're paying. There are other spots in Greenpoint that will stuff your pierogi with thicker scoops and thin dough as well~ The stuffings, though, were WELL seasoned. From the ruskie to the sweet to the cabbage and mushroom and the blueberries it was VERY well prepped. But the prices don't correlate with the plate all too much, and I thought it was a little thin. :/
The food for the most part is great! I wasn't a fan of the barszcz (I'm used to my own and my mom's prep) but the pierogi stuffing tastes were excellent. I am ticking off points moreso for value, because there are definitely ~divier~ places that exist that give you better value for your dollar. Food: 7/10
All in all, I'd come here with an American friend to give them the cute intro to my Polish heritage. The place has cute vibes and in the end I think that's what we payed for. I did not feel the "warm love" of a place serving the true heart and center of Polish culture. Is this the real deal? Not yet. Can it be? Oh totallllllly. If they've got their dough down, they can manage to stuff their pierogi a lil more. Natives will appreciate it~ I will repeat again, the dough is impressive. I know all the mamas and ciocias and babcias be coming up to this place comparing their own to the restaurants, can't fight that, but the least that can be done is to stuff them a lil extra because the end product felt thin on thin.
Decor and visual feel is a 10/10. I super appreciate the layout of the restaurant, the space between tables, the traditional polish dress, and the small relics scattered around to give a traditional polish feel. This place is CLEAN, CUTE, and very date appropriate ;) :)
TLDR: The experience was super cute, super clean, and I love the restaurant's decor (although the LOT WOC poster made me a lil uncomfortable combined with the service from our waitress) and I would totally come again if someone was in need of a cute backdrop. Better service could have boosted our experience. Food left something to be desired with price and value for a Polish native, giving me the feeling that this is catered moreso to the newcomers moving into the neighborhood. read more
