Decided to come here based on some local suggestions one night when we our daughter spent the night at with a friend. I really liked the low key environment with the high class food. It was nice to not have to dress up to get first class seafood and service. At the suggestion of the server, we got the bacon wrapped shrimp. It was pretty amazing. My husband got the fried shrimp, andouille sausage with the jalapeno hush puppies. I can not rave enough about the hush puppies. I've never tasted anything like them. I got the blackened mahi-mahi and the couscous. Very very good. To top it off, not because we were hungry or because we needed it but because we were on a roll and curious - we got the key lime pie. Not great. Anyone can throw a piece of fish on a grill. The key to seafood is the sauces, which were non existent on my visit.

Thanks to a lot going on in Downtown Square Rockwall yesterday we noticed Pier 101 open and not too busy and since I love creole & seafood we decided to give it a try! We started with spicy Bloody Mary's and proceeded on to cups of New England Seafood Chowder and Seafood Gumbo which were equally delicious! Then on to Stuffed Mushrooms, Crab Mac n Cheese and Jalapeño Hushpuppies! Oh and a Spicy Shrimp Cocktail also, something a little sweet we didn't care for but little more lime fixed it to our taste! I'm so glad we decided to try appetizers and even though we got full of all the yummy food we had to get dessert! He had Bread Pudding with ice cream and I had NY plain cheesecake! Food was flavorful. Mashed potatoes came out room temperature TWICE...didn't ask again. Rarely saw our waitperson. Little flexibility on sides. I had crablegs that come with potatoes and corn like any boil. They said I couldn't substitute so I ordered the side of mashed potatoes and paid for them but never received the "boil" potatoes and corn. Food good but poor overall everything else. read more

Portions are small for the price. Calamari didn't come with marinara, but with cocktail sauce. Since I don't like cocktail sauce, I was irritated that the menu didn't tell me that's what it came with. Stuffed mushrooms came out as an order of 4...and they got good reviews. I had the coconut shrimp with fries. I enjoyed the plate, and the sweet sauce. Boyfriend had grilled red fish...not impressed. Just didn't have any flavor or anything. The veggies were good, a rather big variety. Grilled shrimp and grilled fish tacos got a thumbs up. The gumbo has a pungent flavor that we couldn't place. The waitresses could only say "creole" seasoning. Maybe it was paprika. We just couldn't place it...and thought it overpowered the gumbo. That same flavor was in the dirty rice, which also didn't get good reviews. Beer only in a bottle...and the Lakewood Temptress was an astounding $7 a bottle. We will not be returning to Pier 101 solely based on the snarky server with the ponytail. The location is perfect, the atmosphere is okay, some of the dishes that came out were very appealing but what made our decision was the service. A hostess will seat you wherever you want, and then you order from a printed menu - or from the chalkboard on the wall. Tea and soft drinks available. The seafood is great, and they have Snow Crab AND King Crab! Yess!! The fried shrimp is excellent; I wanted more. The shrimp cocktail was huge! The fried catfish wasn't quite as dry and crispy as that served at Z's Catfish - but was excellent nonetheless. Among the desserts, the Key Lime Pie was outstanding! Best Gumbo I have ever had outside of New Orleans. I got the half sandwich and soup lunch special. The sandwich was a blacken shrimp poor boy and gumbo for the soup. I live in new orleans for 3 years, had family form Louisiana , and my daughter married a Cajun. Let me tell you I know my Cajun food. I will be moving to Rockwall at the end of the month and I can see this been my favorite place. My husband had the tilapia, rice abd spinach plate. He really enjoy his food also. Right in downtown Rockwall so there was ample parking available. If you get there before 6pm you will most likely get sat right away. They do not take reservations. The restaurant was kind of hot inside. We started with the gumbo and sampler. The stuffed mushrooms were really good. Maui Maui for dinner was good. Our party of three were the first to arrive for the lunch service, immediately we said something to the waitress about the chilled room, and she apologized but said she couldn't do anything about the temperature. The next three tables came in and immediately complained about temperature, also. Same apology, same explanation about not being able to change. (Thermostat was set at 64° with multiple ceiling fans blowing full blast.). I am not cold natured at all, so if I'm complaining about the coldness of the restaurant, it's cold! We decided to stay and Ordered coffee to warm up before our meal arrived. Lunch specials-1/2 shrimp po'boy with cup of soup (seafood gumbo and seafood chowder). The po'boys and soups were delicious, would definitely order again, and our waitress Emma was great. As for management: Please be more flexible in thermostat control. Jennifer and I went and tried the brand new cajun seafood restaurant out in Rockwall tonight.... We shared the Seafood Sampler which includes 1/2 lb of snow crab, shrimp, and andouille with potatoes and corn and we each got a cup of the New England Seafood Chowder. My favorite part, among the many, many favorite parts of the meal we experienced was that you got to choose your boil (plain, cajun, or spicy) AND THEN, you got to choose your after boil flavor (plain, lemon pepper, garlic butter, cajun, or atomic). Talk about a flavor party IN YOUR MOUTH. The seafood was delicious and super flavorful. Didn't need anything else. The new england seafood chowder was just.....mmm. So full of flavorful with chunks of potatoes and seafood. You just cannot lose. The menu has a nice selection of healthy options that I would consider fairly gourmet as well as your cozy po boy options and dirty rice. The atmosphere is cozy and casual with THE BEST music that will take your little heart back to the 80s. Run to the store and get you some aquanet and blue eye shadow! The service was exemplary. Super friendly and personable staff that can't be beat. The owner was here I believe, and he walked around and made sure everything was going well. We will be back again and again. Very good food and great service! Hope this place survives at this location. We have been three times in the past two weeks and have loved everything. Catfish, shrimp po boy, gumbo and chowder all great. We went tonight and I got the shrimp and grits special. Wonderful! Wife got the pound of snow crab Cajun boil. It was well beyond the quantity you get at Red Lobster and was cooked to perfection. Sides are great as well. Corn, coleslaw are good and hush puppies are great. First I want you to know that we relied totally on Yelp to decide where we went to eat when we chose Pier 101. As a matter of fact, we came here twice this weekend! So that says loads. Our first night there where six of us and the girl who sat us didn't listen to us about where we sat ... 1 in the party is in a wheel chair .... She motioned to a table with fixed seating on 1 and chairs on the other. We mentioned that the chair might be in the way with it being such a narrow walkway. She kinda got an attitude, so we followed her. My fathers wheel chair was bumped and kick by several while trying to skinny by him. But he is not one to complain much. The food was very good, remember we went here two times this weekend. On the table we had oysters on the half shell, a shrimp cocktail and their jalapeño hush puppies .... All very fresh and very good. For meals we had crab cakes, jumbo fried shrimp, coconut shrimp, fried oysters and gumbo. I was told that the crab cakes and jumbo shrimp plates where very good, and the fact that all were eaten and not shared is a true testament. The bowl of gumbo was noted as being "not bad", but I have to say that being from Houston and visiting Treebeards down town as often as we could makes Cajun food, especially their Monday duck gumbo hard to match when that is the measuring stick that we hold to all Cajun food out side of Louisiana. I had the Coconut shrimp and fried oysters plate. When I told the waitress that I could not make up my mind between the two, she said that I could get both on a plate, which sounded good to me so that's what I got. It was a good choice, I throughly enjoyed them both. Oysters where cooked perfectly, light and not greasy at all, tender and not chewy. The Coconut Shrimp were a little too crunchy for me but tasted great! So much so that's what I had the second night as well. With the same result, the crunchiness of the Coconut shrimp might be me and I deducted on points for it. The second night we tried the stuffed mushrooms and they were great, the crab stuffing tasted fresh and where very nice, highly recommended. All their food is highly recommended!!! Their staff seams to be young and very inexperienced ... From forgetting items and having to ask for items more than once to serving a glass of ice tea ... As placing the glass of ice tea with the swimmer towards one end of the table, a glass of water was broke as the bottom of the tea glass hit the rim of the water glass. The waitress came and left a roll of paper towels on our table, We cleaned it up and the menus that were splashed in the commotion. She replaced the glass of tea but never said sorry, or recognized it at all. And I'm sure she didn't say anything to anyone else .... because no one came around to see if everything was all right or not ... This might just be me .... but I think we should have been told about the split plate and combo plate up charge ... it was not a big charge but there where several and it would have been better had they told us especially when so many places seem to up charge for everything. Another indication of the inexperienced staff, which is very important in the food service industry, As the owner/management of a restaurant that's the kind of things I would want to hear about and do something about. The restaurant does not have much room around the tables which makes it difficult with a wheelchair. Sorry to say, the staff at Pier 101 over shadows the good food. The food here is simply amazing. The chefs have such passion in their work. I'm always at the bar and can see them check literally every dish before it's sent out. I was wowed our first trip, but I've been twice since and had issues both times. The first visit back the crab fingers were so salty I couldn't eat them. No biggie. But this last time the "New England" style chowder was so salty I took four bites and told my waiter to take it away. He did. Which was really the only thing he did the entire time we were there. AWFUL service. I had to have the bill corrected because they gave me a 50% discount on something I didn't eat. Next time just have class and take it off the bill. Great little seafood joint! We came in for drinks and appetizers on a Friday night, and we were seated right away. They have our favorite brand of gin at the bar and an excellent drink menu. To eat, we ordered the ceviche, calamari, and gumbo. The ceviche was very fresh with huge chunks of fish, tomato, and avocado. The calamari was good; it was salty but the sauce cut the saltiness a bit. The gumbo was spicy and flavorful. The staff was very friendly and welcoming. By far the worst food I've ever had at a restaurant. They make it clear they don't use any seasoning 100% unseasoned everything. 0 flavor and that's just the way the choose.
