Our first visit here did not disappoint! The service was friendly, the food was delicious, and the restaurant was clean with great music playing. We tried The Dirty South -- amazing flavor and a generous portion. The boudin balls were packed with flavor, too. Food was delicious and came out fast, crawfish was pretty reasonable at $9/lb when we went. It's true Louisiana style, not like a crab boil. When you're paying top dollar for food ... (from a place like The South) you expect it to be amazing, right? Well, this restaurant is giving us culinary whiplash--one minute, it's great, the next you're left wondering if they dropped the ball! No doubt The Dirty South for $20.00 is a delicious deal!! The catfish is delicately blackened, smothered in a crawfish étouffée sauce and served over your choice of dirty rice or jambalaya. The homemade candied pecans sprinkled on top is a nice unique twist! "Yum" will roll out of your mouth with each bite! Why three stars? The Fat Cajun Combo was not worth $25.00. Although this dinner provided a generous portion of fried catfish (fried in a delicious cajun batter I might add), the shrimp and oysters were an epic failure. The shrimp were small and chewy (over cooked) and the oysters were fried but soft, runny, very smelly fishy fishy taste. Awful!! Since this was my dinner -- I ate more of the oysters than i should have. I know better. Then I paid the pipper -- I spent the rest of the night with a headache, stomach cramps and diarrhea. Maybe I shouldn't have eaten 3 of the oysters, but I kept hoping that the oysters would get better. The oysters was half the dinner, lol, I felt a lot of pressure to eat them because it was so expensive. Whomp whomp. The South was packed when we arrived on a Friday around 6pm. We had to wait for 10 minutes to be seated. Honestly, that was not a problem. After we were seated they forgot about us. It took them too long to take our order. That was a problem .. especially when there's only 7 tables in the whole restaurant. For such a tiny space, getting service and stopping by to check on the food should be a priority. If someone would have asked how we were doing, I would have said something. We will be back for The Dirty South when the mood strikes us, but other than that, we are discouraged to try anything else from the menu! read more

I've eaten here before and the food was terrific and the service was good. It's a bit noisy, but what place isn't now? I'd like to tell you more about my most recent visit, but there isn't much to tell. I went in, was told to sit anywhere and someone would be right with me. Which I did, but they didn't. I waited. Nothing. No menu, no drink, nothing. Not even eye contact from anyone on staff. So, I kept waiting. After ten minutes or so, another couple came in and sat at the table next to mine. They were almost immediately handed menus and ordered their drinks. Meanwhile I was still waiting. I really wanted to love this local seafood spot, but overall the food just didn't hit the mark for me. We started with the boudin and jambalaya ball appetizers. Both had a sweet coating that didn't quite pair well with the flavors. The boudin reminded me of unseasoned dirty rice, and the jambalaya was more of a mushy mix that mostly tasted of Old Bay and Cajun seasoning without much depth. For our main dish, we ordered the Fat Cajun (advertised as a generous portion) with a side of greens. The plate came with one fish filet, 4-6 shrimp, 4-6 oysters, and fries. This was enough for 1 person. The fish tasted unusual (almost tuna-like) with a very crunchy but overly seasoned batter that was overwhelming. The shrimp, on the other hand, were fried perfectly with light seasoning and were the best part of the meal. The oysters unfortunately were mushy, "liquid-y" and lacked flavor (I know how fried oysters usually are - these were "off"). The greens seemed to be canned with added sugar and heavy seasoning, which we didn't enjoy. There was also some confusion with our order -- I requested greens in addition to my meal, but they left the fries out. When I asked about fries with the order, they they said we substituted greens for fries. I reminded them I wanted them in addition to our order. They did bring them out hot and fresh about 10 minutes later. The fries were fine but pretty standard with added seasoning. We also tried the swirl drink (pina colada + daiquiri). The pina colada was okay, but the red half had an artificial flavor that wasn't very enjoyable. Even the ketchup tasted overly sweet. On the positive side, customer service was good, and the restaurant itself was clean with a nice touch of a small sink outside the bathrooms for handwashing. Overall, it wasn't a terrible experience, but it wasn't what we were hoping for either. We probably won't be back, though since they're fairly new, I do think they have room to adjust and improve over time. read more

If I could give this place 6 or 7 stars I would. We stopped here for lunch after going horseback riding nearby. It's a small place with a simple concept and everything was very clean. The staff was very friendly and super helpful. I had the fried catfish basket. The catfish was a large piece of fried catfish served piping hot and the hushpuppies and fries were fresh and absolutely delicious. I got the swirled frozen daiquiri which came served in a bag and was very strong and very refreshing. One of the employees brought out a couple complimentary crawfish for me to try and they were so good. My husband got the chicken wings and let me just tell you I am still dreaming about them. Amazing wings. Huge, juicy, well seasoned perfection that don't need a drop of sauce. Saucing those wings would be an insult. 8/30/24: Neighbor and I stopped by for lunch. This was our first visit. It was pretty busy and we sat at the bar. This a small location, there are several tables, and the bar sits five. We sat at the bar. Porter took our order, and he was very friendly. He also was tending to the bar, and running the food out from the kitchen. The food took about 25 minutes to come out, and it was nice and hot. My neighbor had the shrimp platter, which had about six two bite shrimp, a couple of tiny hushpuppies and coleslaw. I had the chicken sandwich with fries. Looking at the menu, the 16" Po'Boys seemed pretty expensive. The restaurant is nicely decorated, and there are TV's throughout. I've been wanting to try this place for a minute. Finally found some time to rally the girls up and give it a shot. Let me tell you, it did not disappoint. The device was excellent. Owner and manager both came out to greet us, definitely a dying tradition in customer care. They were out of the jambalaya but the owner let us try the jambalaya balls on the house. They blew us away, loaded with meat and flavor these were a crowd pleaser. I had the fried shrimp po-boy, it was delicious..no complaints. As my side I got the gumbo which was also loaded with meat and hit the spot. We really enjoyed our visit and hoping this place stays around for a long time. My fiance and I went to The South's soft opening on 25-Mar-2023. They were open from 5PM-8 PM and by the time we arrived around 5:30 PM, the place was already slammed! Every table was filled with new customers eager to try a taste of Louisiana here in Texas. The catfish po'boy and Jambalaya were already sold out. We ordered the shrimp po'boy, and the sausage (patties) po'boy. Each entree came with 1 side, so we tried the cajun casserole and the gumbo. Since it was the soft opening, the staff were still getting the hang of how to run things, so our order took a little bit longer than expected. The owner was so friendly and came to check in on us a few times to make sure we were doing alright. He brought out a sample of the crawfish for us to try (delicious and spicy!). Our entrees arrived, and we were so pleased with how everything came out. Totally worth the wait! The po'boys were LARGE, but we ate every bit of it. The shrimp po'boy had lightly battered fried shrimp, with lettuce, pickles, and tomatoes. The sausage patties were spicy, and were huge. Both were equally delicious and I would order them again! Both the gumbo and the cajun casserole were good. The gumbo reminded me of the Louisiana version of chicken & rice soup, with extra spices and cajun sausage. My favorite was the shrimp one but both were fantastic. The crawfish are a battle to eat (I've never done it before) but the flavor is worth all the mess. The sides were great too. The casserole wasn't anything to write home about but the gumbo was great. They were out of some of the other options when we visited. Probably about 15 tables inside plus a few seats at the bar. What a gem! I took my pops in to try out this place for the first time, and it was awesome. Family owned, I'm sure! The food was really fresh and it was obviously made with love! We ordered the fried okra to start off and I immediately knew this was going to be a great experience, cooked and seasoned well! My dad had the catfish poboy and I had the catfish basket and both were perfect. The owners came over to talk to us in person and they even gave us complimentary jambalaya balls. Fortunately we were able to find 3 tables near each other. All of the food was great. The breading on the fried items was light and not at all oily. The collard greens were well seasoned and really stood out. After we were done the owner came out and checked on us, and all of a sudden just started to bring out things for us to taste that we didn't get a chance to try! All that did was make us wish we had ordered more. I was already full but I'm addition to what we ordered got to try their dirty rice, etoufee and gumbo. This was my first time vising The South. I thought it looked pretty small when we pulled up, and to be frank it is. But upon entering, I changed my adjectives to inviting and intimate. My wife has had the rice and beans before as she is a teacher at Wylie High, and The South has catered there before. Shoe loved it so much that is why we decided to go. She changed things up and ordered the jambalaya and really enjoyed it. I couldn't decide so I opted for D's Special, with blackened shrimp and jambalaya for the options. I must say, this was my favorite restaurant dish in a long time. Everything about it was magnificent. I especially liked the collared greens. The service was very attentive even to the point that the owner came over and offered a sample of his wife's cold brew coffee! Which by the way, we will be going back just for that! This place is AUTHENTIC Cajun food! The owners are from New Orleans and brought a taste of their home back with them. My mom's family is from Louisiana and eating here brought back my childhood. Everything came out piping hot and perfectly spiced. Me and my husband split everything - we got a cup of the red beans and rice which is most definitely a bowl! We also got a jambalaya ball appetizer to try, we destroyed it before I thought to take a picture! It was incredible, and served with a Cajun-spiced sauce of some sort which a great kick. The catfish filet was huge and the fries were some of the best I've ever had. Definitely twice-fried, they were so crispy.
