Haven't been here in a while so stopped by and got a pepper steak pie. Still incredibly good.

I think I got turned on to Pie Boss from a recent Yelp mailing, and then promptly forgot about it. Good thing someone suggested we try it recently, or it might have stayed forgotten. Four of us descended on Pie Boss for a Saturday lunch, and we tried...I think most things on the menu. The pies all have an amazing flaky crust, just outstanding, and they're pretty well filled with all sort of stuff. I think the only things we didn't have were the cheeseburger (which I say sounds good) and the beef pastie. Particular highlights are the spicy vegetable and the chicken and mushroom. The spicy chicken is also good - I think if they combined the spicy chicken and spicy vegetable, that would be the only thing I'd ever order. When they say spicy, what they mean is a sort of traditional Indian flavored curry, and it's delicious. My pepper steak was good as well, with lots of good black pepper flavor. Their dessert - apple crumble and custard pies - are good, but not really remarkable. I would say I could probably eat...about one and a half pies? Maybe one and a third? So one might leave you a bit hungry, depending, but I think two would leave you stuffed. Of note, unless they have them baked, you can wait 20-30 minutes for a pie to be cooked. I would say it's worth it, but if not, they look to keep a small stock of things warm for immediate service. But, in another twist I hadn't thought of, you can also take away frozen pies, which is kind of cool. Might be a good thing to keep in the freezer. I need to keep this on my list as a good change from the normal stuff. read more

We live an hour away, and Yelped this hidden gem when we had to pick up some Craigslist chairs in Aurora. This is the kind of place that usually doesn't get respect from locals in the 'burbs: world class but weird. They usually die unmourned and then a few foodies cry themselves to sleep for months. Go. Just go. Get anything. We tried nearly everything (short menu). Imagine an Upper-Peninsula-Michigan Cornish Pastie crossed with the best pot pie of your life, filled with East Indian spicy wonderfulness. Please imagine that. Then forget about it, because it is way better than what you imagined. And the two dessert tarts we tried were filled with the best egg custard of my life and some of the best apple pie filling I have ever had. This is world class cuisine. Really. Go. Wouldn't have heard of this place without its mentioning in someone's review of the day. The fact that its based from South African cuisine increased my curiosity. Its rather hard to locate at first as there's no advertisement in front of the strip mall with the other nearby businesses so you really have to look. Got a pepper steak and cheeseburger pie with some custard pies. The workers were very nice and seemed to really appreciate my patronizing of their establishment. The cheeseburger pie was amazing! Just simple ingredients, hamburger meat with onions, cheese, and ketchup. Same with the pepper steak, as its just a steak filling with a black pepper spice. These pies are pretty filling, which make them ideal treats for hangovers. The little custard pies were delicious as it had a little dusting of cinnamon in top. The only bad thing was that I didn't buy more of those custard pies. They really need to install a sign on top of their storefront and at the front post with the other stripmall business tenants. read more

Two words: meat pies. Buttery, flaky, flavorful meat pies. I bookmarked this place last year and only stepped foot in it this past weekend. I have deprived myself of Pie Boss for over a year and need to make it up to my taste buds and stomach. I bought a spicy chicken pie for my lunch and decided to buy a few frozen ones based on recommendations from the owner: pepper steak, another spicy chicken, and spicy beef foldover. The spicy chicken pie was gotdamn f*cking delicious. The crust was so buttery and the filling was spicy and super tasty. Every bite of the spicy chicken pie was crust PLUS chicken, not just soggy, slimy crust. I bought the frozen ones for my family and one person already had the spicy chicken and agreed with me about how freaking good it is. Haven't had a chance to try the other 2 I bought yet but I'll be in the area again this week and will most likely buy some more to try out. Service was very friendly and I appreciated the warm welcome and explanation of menu items. I definitely will be a regular here. If you live in the area or even if you don't, do yourself a favor and try Pie Boss. read more

Lunchtime on Farnsworth Road. I turn to my handy-dandy Yelp bookmarks. Pie Boss shows up. Once again, thank you Yelp. As I enter, a woman coming out asks me if I'm coming in and holds the door open. She tells me I'm in for a treat. That's a good sign. A small menu with ten items total, but they usually have one of each hot and ready to go. I chose the steak and pepper. The pastry was flaky, the meat was perfectly cooked and it was nicely seasoned. The pies seem small but they are deceptively filling. Even though the pies are filling, hearty eaters may want to get a little something else like desert. The choices are an apple crumble or a custard tart. CUSTARD TART? Since this English favorite is now available here, the sun truly does not set on the British empire, even in Aurora, Illinois, USA. The custard tart was sprinkled with the traditional nutmeg. Perfection. Steak and pepper pie, custard tart and a coke. Total? $8.50. The only thing I would have liked to see on the menu is something green, meaning a salad or vegetable. I've never been to South Africa so I don't know what savory pies are served with. Service was great. I had a pleasant time chatting with the staff. Now we have South African covered in the Chicago area. So I'm just waiting on a Burmese place to open. read more

Three reasons why I absolutely love this place: 1) It's family owned and run, even though the son is the front man. 2) It's VERY close to my house. 3) There isn't one bad thing on the menu! Despite reason #3 My wife and I have our mainstays, the Peppersteak, the Spicy Vegetable, and the Spicy Chicken. Add a dessert tart and we're golden. While some of the more popular items are often available for immediate pick-up, it's better to call a half hour in advance and get your order made fresh. My only gripe with this place is that it's closed on Sundays...but given the amazing food they make I guess the owner deserves a day off. read more

Where the Hell have I been that i just finally came to this place after they have been open 15 months? The Yelp reviews are what sent me over here for a quick dinner while my wife and son are outta town...gotta fend for myself... I have a rule when it comes to food places. WHen they have VERY few menu items, and the place is generally very humble decor etc......It can likely mean that the place is gonna blow your mind with some crazy food due to specializing in some sort of food that they do to perfection. Pie Boss, proved the rule 100% WHen you walk in and get that smell (You know what i mean if you have been there), it will be apparent that you came to the right place. Theres no sign on the building so i drove by a few times, but they do have a sign in the windows. Just follow the smell. I wont bore you with alot of food review here, trust me when i tell you that you likely have not eaten many things as good as what this place bakes up....I Had Spicy Chicken Pie with peas etc....And a Cinnamon Custard Tart for dessert.....I was literally sitting at a small table by myself chuckling as i was eating because i couldnt believe how incredible the flavors were..... Look, if youre looking for fine dining, this aint it...Its a small (2 tables i think) place that does mostly call ahead and take out i think. Dont let that dissuade you as this place is a monster of flavor..... The secret (That as a newbie I didn't know), is that most people call 30 minutes ahead and tell them what they want so when they arrive your freshly baked meat pieces are ready for you to either eat there or take home. If you dont call, they still have a nice selection of their big sellers prebaked and hot and ready for you... Other secret is Like them on Facebook as they post specials there each day that are not on the menu....LIke Frickin Lamb stew in a breadbowl........AHHHH I would have died for that but didnt know at the time i ordered. Anyway, The guys there are very cool, love to explain what is in the pies, and you can tell they take great pride in their creations....I CANT WAIT to get back there.....Oh yeah, and my bill for a pie, dessert and soda was like $8.50.......WTH??? This place is incredible. I was turned on to this joint because of everything I read here on yelp. The hype is justified. This place is one in a million. The pies are unbelievable. You really have to get in there and try them for yourself. I am a fan of the Pepper Steak and also the Spicy Chicken....they taste great! Follow their Facebook site for other unique options like the spicy lamb or bunny chow. They only prepare those meals on special occasions. Pies taste great....thats the bottom line. We took home the Peppered Steak pie and the Cheeseburger pie, it was easy to follow the directions that came with them. I enjoyed the crust more than anything, it was fluffy and crispy. My husband was overwhelmed with his Cheeseburger pie after 3 bites. We both shared the chocolate custard tart for dessert which was phenomenal. read more

Food is delightful here!! The crusts are amazing, as well as the stuffings. Everything is seasoned to perfection and the textures of everything are great. My favorite pie for now is the spicy chicken (which is not too spicy). However, every pie that I've tasted has been very good. I'm excited to go back to try some of their dessert pie!! This place is a little hidden gem in Aurora located near Rush Copley Hospital. I am so glad my friend took me here to try because I would've never known about it! Wow! These guys make seriously delicious pot pies, etc. I stopped in after seeing them featured on yelp. I don't get to this area often, so I picked up several frozen meat pies, beef pasties and sausage rolls to take home. The kids loved the chicken-mushroom and cheeseburger pies. The pepper steak was very good. We also had a special meat pie: spicy steak. It had Indian flavors like a samosa and was really delicious. The crust was tasty too. I can't wait to try the pasties and sausage rolls in my freezer. My family wants me to go back immediately to get more. I guess I will be traveling to this area more often! This place is in the strip mall. It's hard to find from the street since they have no sign at the top of the building - only in the window. Stop reading these reviews and go already! You absolutely have to come here for amazingly delicious homemade pies. I have tried almost all the pies on the menu, they are all so good! So far the pepper steak is my absolute favorite, it's very... And I mean VERY savory *drool*. The pasty they have is also really delicious! The food is very filling, I'm a small person so one pie is more than enough to satisfy me. If you are a bigger person or just have a big appetite, a pie and a sausage roll or pasty should be enough to fill you up! Also, I always make sure to get their custard for desert for a little over $1! It's so creamy, milky, and lightly sweet. Yums! I read a few reviews on here that complain about the price being too high. Honestly, the price is just right for a freshly made homemade savory pie that will make you come back again... And again. Doesn't look like much but WOW is it mouthwateringly delicious! The limited menu didn't make me feel like there were limited options. A friend and I split the Chicken & Mushroom and the Cheeseburger pot pies, and I would definitely recommend either. It could just be because I'm pregnant, but I could've eaten a whole other one all on my own... so I'm not sure if that means they're a little small to fill up on one or what. :) We also split the mini dessert pies: the apple and the vanilla custard. I'm not a custard person at all, but that was delicious too! Sprinkled in cinnamon... it was really hard to decide which I liked better. I'm 30 minutes away from this place, but it would be worth it to take my hubby here next time I have a craving for flaky pastry and delicious filling... Mmmm... If you grew up with SWANSON Pot Pies, these are not them. But hen you see these, they'll bring back Happy Memories. These pies are larger, but back when we were growing up SWANSON looked big. That said a good friend of mine told me to try this place. I bought two Chicken & Mushroom, a Spinach with Feta. These were AWESOME. ate for dinner when I got home. t the last minute I bought a Sausage Roll, this I ate on the way home. I was told they make there own sausage, now most of us know, it can be spicy and greasy. The sausage was perfect favor, for me it could have used a little ketchup. But other than that it was very good. Can't wait to try the Pepper Steak Pot Pie as I hear it's there best seller. We tried Pie Boss for the first time this past Saturday. I called ahead and the pies were hot and ready to take home. They were great! We liked the spicy chicken and the pepper steak the best. This place is really great. A lot of the other yelp reviews have covered all of the good things here, but I will add that this place is also excellent for vegetarians. We had their mixed vegetable pie and the spinach and feta pie and both were amazing. My husband and I both have a preference for the vegetable (so good, so currylicious) but we will be ordering the spinach as well when we return. For dessert pies we had custard pies and they were delicious. I am a sucker both for custard and for cinnamon sprinkled on desserts, so these were right up my alley. I heard the apple pies were good, but they were out when we were there (we arrived shortly before closing) so I'll have to try them out next time. The staff were all very attentive and friendly. As other reviewers mentioned, it is easy to drive past and not realize you've missed it, so make sure to double check your map or your phone on the way so you won't have to swing a u-turn and come back for delicious pies. If you do miss it, you totally should turn around and come back though. If you like carbohydrate as much as I do it's worth trying to find this place. read more

My cousin recommended this place, and being a foodie like me as well as the restaurant being somewhat close to home, I had to try it. While the menu is small, I had a hard time deciding what to eat. After reading the reviews, I chose the spicy chicken. The rest of the family picked theirs (cheeseburger pies, another spicy chicken and the chicken and mushroom.) My husband called it in and picked it up. When he brought them home and we got ready to eat, I started off with a bit of the flaky, beautiful crust. It was delicious. I dug in and got some of the spicy chicken filling. It was very flavorful with just the right amount of heat. My daughter loved her spicy chicken. My son finished his cheeseburger pie before my husband even started eating. I took a tiny bit of my husband's chicken and mushroom, and that was quite tasty as well. He's certainly enjoying it and loving the crust. We will most certainly be back and soon! Prices are very reasonable too. read more

The food here is very tasty! I've only been here once, but the flaky crust/pie is very well prepared. It looks perfect, I'm not sure how the owner Ty (from the bakery's website) makes it that way. Anyway, it was 10am and the pies were just getting out of the oven. I ordered the Chicken and Mushroom Pie and a Sausage Roll. I was thinking of eating it later in the day, but it was freshly prepared so I ate some of it right away instead. The prices are low and the food is good IMO. I'd recommend this place to people. Although it's more like a bakery than a restaurant, there are a few tables. Oh and I had a chance to ask Ty about the food and he was super nice! read more

I really didn't want to write this review. I hate being negative, especially about a local company that is obviously trying hard. But I have no idea where all these positive reviewers ate because the place we went to was not even deserving of one star. Have you ever eaten a hot pocket? They are gourmet compared to this place. We got the Hawaiian pizza pocket, which was described as pineapple, bacon and a hawaiian sauce. It was ham that was not cooked all the way, canned pineapple and a watery sauce that was maybe tomato based in a past life. The crust was edible, I think, the sauce made me spit out the few bites I tried (one with pineapple, one with ham and one with just crust, I really wanted to give them a chance). My daughter tried to like it, but could not swallow her bites either. $6 into the garbage. So, we decided to have the cute tiny chocolate pie redeem them. It cost almost $3, and was small enough to fit in the palm of my daughter's hand. I love chocolate, maybe THIS is what made the place so good. But alas, no, it was generic chocolate pudding with shaved hershey bar on top. The crust was bland and not worth the effort of chewing. I ate only one bite. At least the $1.50 can of Dr. Pepper was cold. read more

I love this place. The owners are so friendly and the pies are delicious. I had the spinach and feta pie and the cheeseburger pie and they were both good. The cheeseburger pie actually had a whole burger in it. They menu is small but everything is made fresh and they usually have pies that are ready to go or you can bring them home and bake it yourself. You can also call ahead (30mins) and they will bake a fresh pie for you before you get there. The crust is always flaky and the meat is well seasoned and full of flavor. Love you yelp. My husband was foraging in the hood and found this place thanks to yelp. If you love Swansons, no make that Marie callender pot pies, you are never going back once you have these pies. Omg, the flakiest crusts ever. They have peri peri chicken, chicken and mushroom, pepper steak and many more kinds. Located in a strip mall, there are only 2 tables and the door has some difficulty opening up all the way. There is a heated case for already cooked pies, but there are plenty of frozen options to order from. We came in on an afternoon and they were out of the spicy chicken. The owners were surprised that so many people ordered them as well. I got a mix of frozen pies to go including the cheeseburger pie, pepper steak, chicken and mushroom, along with a spicy veggie. The owner was really nice as he mentioned that it started from South African street food the he grew up on but they upgraded it with sirloin steak, ground beef for the cheeseburger, and using higher end ingredients for the flaky crust. The price point is pretty reasonable as well. Although the distance is pretty far, it's worth the trip if you go to the outlet mall or anywhere near there. read more

If I had to sum up my experience in one word, it would be: disappointment. When we found out about this place, we got really excited. My grandma, who is from the UP, thought maybe we won't have to make pasties anymore. Wrong. The steak pasty was unlike any other pasty I had ever met the acquaintance of. Peas, corn, gravy - especially inside the crust? All cardinal sins of pasty making. We also had a cheeseburger pie, and we were all very confused at the fact that the slice of what appeared to be Kraft American cheese had not melted, despite being warm. It's an anomaly. I have been wanting to try this place for awhile now. It did NOT disappoint! I ordered a spicy chicken and I walked out with a pepper steak, apple and custard pie in addition to my order. The spicy chicken is HIGHLY recommended! The owner is very nice and made me feel very welcome. One note. You MUST pre-order cause the make the pies to order. It takes about 30-35 mins. Don't be deceived by the name... or the strip mall location. These are the BEST meat pies you'll find. NOT cheap HungryMan potpies, everything is made from scratch and if you call ahead they'll make sure you have them fresh out of the oven when you arrive. Flaky crust that you'll eat ever piece of, moist & tender meat and veggies inside, all finished with perfect seasonings and spices. To be fair, they do have a couple of mini desert offerings, but for me it was all about the Pasty & Sausage rolls. read more

I ate at Pie Boss over the weekend, and I gotta say that I am craving it now. This place is amazing. Think more pot pie then desert pie. I had a cheeseburger pie and was very impressed. It was more like a meatloaf pot pie with cheese... Probably doesn't sound good but really is. And, I had a sausage roll which could have been a meal all in itself. It was so tasty that I am starting to salivate as I am writing this. Then for desert I had a little Custard pie, which was to die for. Awesome place. Unlike anything else in the area. The place looks small but has the most awesome pies. We ordered the spicy chicken and the lamb pie .. The chicken pie was good but the lamb pie was the best .The custard was nice as well !
