However, service was lovely, much better than what I've experienced at My Hang. So my parents and I were craving some banh mi. Our usual place, Co Cham, was closed for vacation. As was our back up, My Hang (yup, both banh mi heavyweights were closed for vacation at the same time!). So we headed to Pho Bo Ga King to try our luck. They also had the "buy 5 get 1 free" deal (like their banh mi competitors) and their "Combination Banh Mi" (mixed cold cuts) was the same price, $6 each. We bought 10 and got 2 free. My husband, brother and sister-in-law also love banh mi, so we were getting some for them too. We asked for the vegetable toppings on the side so the banh mi wouldn't get all soggy. They were happy to accommodate. The meats were good, although the BBQ pork was too fatty for my liking. The bread however, was a bit stale. Not incredibly stale, but not fresh. Also the bread was not the traditional crispy baguette, but rather a submarine-type bread. The vegetable toppings were cucumbers, pickled carrots, pickled daikon, and cilantro. No chili peppers. They gave us a good amount of toppings. My mom also got a Che Ba Mau (tri-coloured Vietnamese bean dessert) $6.50. She enjoyed it and said the ingredients tasted fresh. Service was great. Very friendly. Much nicer than the banh mi competition in Chinatown. The restaurant itself is nice with lots of seating. They also sell bubble tea and Vietnamese coffee. And of course pho, vermicelli and rice dishes, as well as Bun Bo Hue. I was delighted to discover they sell my 2 favourite noodle soups: Hu Tieu Nam Vang and Hu Tieu My Tho. The shaky beef has a bit of a different flavor and special tangy/salty sauce to dip it in. Service Was great and there is a waiting time if you come after 7pm.

The spring roll was mostly wrapper and too oily for my liking. The rice dish came with fresh cucumbers and pickled radishes and pickled carrots. The vermicelli dish came with shredded lettuce and bean sprouts, which were underneath the vermicelli. It also came with pickled carrots and crushed peanuts. The fresh vegetables were fresh and the picked vegetables had a good sour bite to them. We also got a tub of fish sauce, which neither of us like, but my dad does, so I saved it and gave it to him on the weekend when I went to see my parents. I appreciated that they labelled the fish sauce with a warning to open slowly (with a smiley face, lol). Food is packed in styrofoam, which is not my preference for environmental and health reasons. Service was very courteous and efficient. I was told it would be 25 minutes. I returned in 22 minutes and they were just tying up the bag. Perfect timing! Note that the prices on their takeout menu (pictured) are outdated. My dishes were listed as $9.50 each on the menu, but I was charged $11.75, which is still a great deal. For my order #20, I asked the medium rare beef (essentially it's rare beef, but they name it as "medium rare beef" FYI) on the side as I want the beef as rare as possible. I liked the amount and the quality of the meat. Brisket are cooked tender and come in cubes. Interesting. Giving it a chunky texture. The most impressive was the broth. Clear, smooth, packed natural beefy favor. Delicately done. Spring roll tasted fresh. Tender pork inside was sliced thinly, embracing rice noodle and vegetables, and made a nice textural contrast with shrimps. Very simple but delicately and carefully made. I was going with a few friends, but had to arrive later since I had another commitment. I got them to order for me a medium pho with "the iPho special": rare beef, brisket, tendon, beef balls, chicken, and a quail egg. Once I was done and commuted to the restaurant, it had been around 45 minutes; the pho was just about ready to be served! My friends had been waiting the same quantity of time for their orders. The atmosphere was interesting; we did go at a time between lunch and dinner, so there really wasn't anyone else around. Also worth noting is the decor, which looks like a traditional western pub; I think that's what this place might've used to be. We did eventually get our dishes. The pho was inoffensive but ultimately nothing outstanding, even with the extra toppings and sides. Filling, of course, but that's what you would expect from noodle soup. Would I recommend coming here? I wouldn't think so; I think there are other Vietnamese restaurants in Ottawa that respect your time and have more flavourful dishes.

It was like Pad Thai but with a peanut sauce instead of the tangy Pad Thai sauce. I would order this again. The crispy noodles with seafood was good too. They give you a piece of paper to write your order on and they mistook 607 for 609 and brought us the wrong dish. They gladly replaced the dish when we informed them of the error. There was some poor penmanship on our part, so my husband left them a big tip for the misunderstanding. In the future, I think it's best to write out the number and also the name of the dish (although the names are all so long) to avoid any misunderstanding. We will be doing this from now on. You get a pot of complimentary tea as soon as you sit down. The place settings have spoons and chopsticks. My father-in-law required a fork and it took them a while to get him one. We also asked for serving utensils since we were sharing all the dishes and that also took a while, but when they came they brought us a lot of forks and spoons and also a laddle(!) They were very nice though. The decor is similar to other Pho places, pretty casual. It's in a strip mall (same mall as Grace in the Kitchen). There is lots of free parking. I would return.
