Vietnamese food is one of my favorite cuisines of all time so I was excited to try this new place although the exterior design choices are a bit questionable and I thought I was standing outside of a night club at first. I'm sad to say that I was pretty disappointed in the food itself despite all these 5-star raving reviews! For a $16 filet mignon pho, I thought I would get a lot more bang for my buck. While the rice noodles had a lovely texture, I found the broth a little too sweet and there was not nearly enough meat. I also got a mountain of bean sprouts and a single sprig of basil. Tonight was the fifth time I've eaten at this Vietnamese restaurant and once again my companion and I enjoyed an excellent meal. This restaurant is right on the corner of Addison's entertainment row within a block of Berkeley Rep, the Aurora Theater and the Freight and Salvage. This corner was occupied for some years by Gecko Gecko Thai, which did a brisk pre-show business. I was sad it closed during Covid. Pho Tasty is actually more attractive than Gecko and very clean inside, with a friendly staff. Unfortunately, the outside windows are so dark most people don't realize the restaurant is there or don't take a chance to try the door. I didn't realize it was open for months until a friend told me they had delicious food and suggested I try it. Once I discovered it I ordered the spring rolls, very fresh, and the filet mignon over vermicelli noodles w veggies, also perfectly cooked and fresh tasting and Thai iced tea. I've repeated this order more than once. I haven't personally tried the Pho, however a few of my companions knowledgeable of good pho have praised the tasty broth and generous portion size. This establishment should be doing a lot better given the convenient location and good food. The venue has applied for a beer and wine license which may help them. Every person I've come with enjoyed the food so I wish them success here. read more

It seems that I am in the minority in that I did not think the pho here was up to scuff. I got an XL beef pho with tendon and the meat was delicious but the broth was okay. I could barely detect any spices in the one-dimensional broth that tasted like nothing but meat. Not slow cooked, roasted, savory meat. It tasted as if they'd stewed chunks of beef in water for hours and that was all. I also found the price to be rather high for pho. Pho is typically a cheaper meal and I got sticker shock when I sat down and saw that a "regular" cost $16 and an "XL" cost $18. I opted for the XL because it's only $2 more and I was starving at this point but I wish there were a cheaper option for pho, maybe a size small? I don't know the size difference between the two so I can't comment as to whether the upgrade is worthwhile. When I dined in with a friend on a weeknight it was rather quiet. We got here for an early dinner around 4-5pm and we were the only patrons in their spacious dining area so no worries about getting a seat in a timely manner. read more

Super delicious pho and Vietnamese food! I have been craving pho for awhile and decided to come here because it seemed new since I haven't seen it pop up on my Yelp before. I came here after school with some friends and we got the filet mignon & brisket pho, filet mignon & flank pho, and the banh xeo. Everything was so tasty. The banh xeo was crispy and came with the fish sauce which made it so yummy. The pho broth was very flavorful and went perfectly with the cold weather in Berkeley. I feel like the location is a bit hidden so not many people know about it. I would definitely say you should come and support this local restaurant. The restaurant itself is super cute and clean the inside seemed to have new tables, tv, and furniture. There was one waiter working while we were there and he was super sweet and answered all of our questions about the menu. I've been waiting for this place to open! I work right across the street and was excited when I heard they're open for business. My coworker and I went for lunch one weekday around noon. There were maybe 4 tables seated but still fairly empty for lunch time. We both ordered the vermicelli noodle bowl with chicken and veggies and I also got a Thai iced tea. The bowl was so delicious and flavorful with all the fresh herbs and veggies! And who ever has anything bad to say about a Thai Iced tea?! The server was also our host and he was super friendly. The food came out in a timely manner (maybe 10-15 mins). The only thing I think that might be deterring folks from stopping by is the tinted windows. They are HEAVILY tinted to the point where you actually can't tell they're open unless you actually walk up and try to open the door. It definitely does protect against the sun beaming though out the day but that is just a thought I had while sitting there. It may be a bit more inviting if the windows weren't as dark. I went here with a friend who has worked in Vietnamese food establishments in the past, and he was very disappointed. He would have put 1 Star if he could, but I give 4 on basis of presentation and quick service only. 2 Stars for flavor. I have Vietnamese friends and have had good pho and majority of the pho spots in East Bay. The day before I even had pho at Vietnam House, and the presentation at Pho Tasty and reviews gave me the impression this place would be better tasting and better quality than Vietnam House, so we got several things to try. I got the beef pho with filet mignon and brisket. The meat tasted fresh and was still a little red when we got the pho, but we were both disappointed in the flavor of the broth. It was probably the most watered down of the phos I have had in the Bay area unfortunately. It was decent once we added sriracha. The meat portion was just ok, but the meat was paper thin, so it wasn't much. The bun xeo my friend informed me was also too thick, underseasoned, and we counted maybe 5 pieces of meat (it was probably 75% bean sprout). It tasted very heavy and oily. It was fried to a crisp but was tough. The spring rolls were not fully closed and loosely wrapped with a couple shrimp such that half of it had no shrimp and it immediately started to fall apart after one bite. My friend said the wrap was extra sticky. Some other observations: the shrimp was cooked well (not over or under) and the pork in the bun xeo had a freezer burn taste and was tough and unflavorful. Overall they did some things well (pho beef cook, shrimp cook, presentation, service) and some things not well (flavor of pho broth, meat portions, spring rolls, bun xeo, pork), but for this price and taste of the food, we will not be coming back. read more

My partner and I LOVE coming to Pho Tasty. The service is warm and the food is legitimately tasty, like it's name implies lol. We love Vietnamese food and have gone to various Vietnamese restaurants, but now that we have found this place, this has become our go-to. The resturant is a great place to have good conversation over a meal - there are some tvs incase you want to catch sports, but the music isn't too loud to inhibit conversations. Nina and I had dinner here tonight before a concert at Freight & Salvage. We had tried to go to Comal, but there was a line and Revival is closed Tuesday nights. We had driven past here as we were looking for parking and after finding Revival closed we decided to check this out. We walked in and were greeted and seated in a comfortable booth. Neither of us had been here since it was Gecko Gecko, before the pandemic. Our host and server greeted several people as they walked in. The restaurant is well positioned to serve the pre/post theatre and concert crowd. We overheard him tell the people seated behind us that they'd been open a week. Fortunately we didn't know that because that might have deterred us. We were given menus and decided to share the beef roll wrap to start. Neither of us had seen it on a menu before and it sounded good. For our mains we both chose a clay pot, both w/ shrimp and pork, Nina's low sodium and mine the way they normally make it. I ordered Thai iced tea and Nina had water. The beef roll wrap came out first and was delicious, two rolls cut in half, the filet mignon tender and the marinated vegetables adding a crunch and piquancy that rendered a dipping sauce unnecessary. It was pan-fried and not greasy at all. The clay pot components were delivered separately, the shrimp and pork in a bowl w/ sauce and the rice on a plate, deconstructed rather than in its eponymous clay pot. We each put the some of the rice in the bowl w/ the pork and shrimp. The sauce was subtly sweet and the dish was delicious, the pork tender and the shrimp sweet and fresh, both in generous quantities. The Thai iced tea was OK. Not the best I've had, but not bad. The space had been empty for a year before Pho Tasty opened and the decor is new and attractive. There are interesting helix-like modern glass light fixtures over each table and can lighting throughout the rest of the room. There is a lighted vertically moving liquid room divider that changes color. Hard to describe but very appealing. There are two gender neutral bathrooms w/ red/orange vessel sinks and faucets the same color w/ a joystick-like control. Cool looking and functional. The floors are small hexagonal tiles w/ accent colors that compliment the colors of the sinks. I gather from one of the other reviews that this is a restaurant that began in Davis. They are a welcome addition to the Berkeley Arts District. read more

Pho Tasty does not beat around the bush. At first, we were so sketched out when we saw that all of the windows were completely blacked out, but we were pleasantly surprised by the indoor ambiance, along with the level of peace and privacy that came with the blackout windows. Our server, who also might be the cook and the owner, was very kind and informative as to our orders. The interior design was truly revolutionary, lending itself to modern interpretation with standout features like helical light fixtures, a honeycomb mirror, and serendipitous murals of natural scenery depicted on the walls -- not to mention the unforgettable neon green bubble array. In addition, the juxtaposition between the modern art and the 3 gigantic TV screens that fill half of your vision playing sports truly make for a stimulating experience. Now for the food: absolutely scrumptious--it was demolished. We ordered the shrimp noodle soup and the beef filet soup. One point of interest was the variable sizing on only the beef broth soups, of which you were given two options, small or extra large. We opted for small, which was misleading large. So eccentric. At first we were a bit put off when we approached the establishment and found all the windows were completely blacked out and the only thing identifying it as the restaurant we were visiting was a grand opening banner. Alas, upon opening the door we were greeted by fantastic ambiance. Immediately noticeable was the giant, neon green, slightly tilted bubble array that seemed to have been about half the investment made into furnishing the inside, not to mention how the blackout windows actually created an atmosphere of peace and privacy. On the walls were a dichotomy of massive TV screens playing sports and serendipitous nature murals. The light fixtures are helical in nature and invoke a deeper thought about something, although we're not quite sure what. There is also a slightly unsettling honeycomb mirror with no apparent mirror, but that is of no importance. We were not entirely convinced that the one man staffing the entire restaurant was not simultaneously, our server, the cook, and the owner. Now, for the food -- we ordered both the shrimp noodle soup and the filet mignon and brisket. A point of interest, however, was that there were two size options for only the beef broth meals: small and XL--no in-between. Decent pho, has the best potential out of all the pho restaurant I've eaten at. Only issue is the price, pretty expensive. Now I wouldn't mind too much if it was rly good pho, but the broth of the pho could have used a little more flavor (maybe longer simmer time or something, but had the correct salinity). Still better pho than anywhere in Berkeley tho. Something weird is the fact that the glass windows are tinted. Like the inside is so beautiful, so why have tinted windows. The tinted windows will scare anyone who considers this place because no one can see inside, who the hell would want to eat there? I was excited to see a new vietnamese restaurant open in Berkeley. I went there on a saturday around 2-3 pm and there was no wait. We ordered the pho bo with tofu and also the crab rangoons as an appetizer. The crab rangoons were the highlight for sure. Freshly fried, filled well, and also had cheese which made them extra tasty and satisfying. They served them with sweet chili sauce which was perfect. The beef broth for the pho I would say was a bit more unique and had a tang to it, but it is definitely better than other places I have had in Berkeley. I ordered the small size which was just enough and there were good portions of noodles. They also provide bean sprouts, lemons, basil, etc. I think what was most surprising was the interior. You can't see from outside due to tinted windows, but it was super clean, very updated and pretty. Even the bathrooms were nice! I would recommend to try this place out. It is in the pricier side, but I think many pho places in this area are charging the same price. read more

Three of us ordered beef with eggplant (a little spicy), fried rice with pineapple, and seafood clay pot. All were superb. Plenty of seafood, a good variety of vegetables in eggplant dish. the dinner ware was notably pretty, including a teapot sitting on a little stand with a candle to keep the tea hot. This restaurant has replaced a Thai restaurant and now serves aa large selection of Vietnamese and Chinese dishes. It is located half a block from Berkeley Rep, Freight and Salvage, and Aurora. We went on a rainy night after a performance at Berkeley Rep right up the block. It was a warm and friendly port in the storm. We had three dishes and all were excellent. First time here. This was the location of a Thai restaurant. Very good. I had the pho ga (chicken broth) with wontons , chinese BBQ pork, etc. Also Banh Xeo. Everything was great. I'll be back to try other things. The SF Chron critic (Soleil Ho) was right. One nice touch is that if you order hot tea the pot of tea comes on a warmer with a candle so it doesn't get cold.
