It is brightly lit, the tables and chairs are chosen for function rather than aesthetics, but the place is scrupulously clean and efficiently run. More to the point, the food is fantastic. Went there a while ago because of the positive reviews. Don't live in the area but was nearby so stopped in for carry-out. The young man at the counter was pleasant enough--we ordered a pretty generous carry-out pho and a tea drink. We pay as we go and tip well so usually no problem. As we went to leave I picked up a pair of maybe 10 cent chop sticks off the table. Some old man--the owner (?)--yells at me "not for you, for eat-in only". Oh no! I took 5 cents worth of chop sticks--if that! The food was so-so, but honestly, to be screamed at by some old dude? Whatever you do--don't touch the cheap chop-sticks on the table. One of my favorite pho places. AND they actually take credit card (unlike most pho joints who require the inconvenience of an ATM run). Service is always really fast and the employees are friendly and attentive. There's usually a good-sized crowd in PhoReal, but never crowded enough that you have to wait for a table. There are a couple places in MD that arguably serve the best pho, and Pho Real has to be one of my favorites. It's a ritual, I swear! Small number 12, no cilantro, extra onion in vinegar, and an iced-coffee to go please!! As I wait for my meal, I mix the Sriracha (red) and brown sauce to dip the meat in. I always give away half my noodles so that I can fit in all the onion and bean sprouts that I can. Squeeze some lime juice, a good amount of Sriracha sauce, and I'm good to go. I always advise that people try the soup before adding anything to it, just to get the pure taste of the broth. You'll know when it's good if it has the clean, not-so-greasy taste...and no meaty smell either. I still think they put some addictive ingredient (drug) into it...because I keep going back for more and it always hits the spot! read more

The owners are super nice people and always treat their customers with care -- they put just as much care into preparing their Pho. They pick up fresh ingredients every morning and that's why I have to say this Pho tastes better than the rest. I used to be all about Pho 75 and Nam by Gaithersburg/Rockville area; however, I can only eat at Pho Real now.... forreal. I live all the way in Gaithersburg and when my friends go "I'm totally craving some Pho." I will ONLY go of it's Pho Real and I offer to drive since they usually complain about the distance. Who the pho goes to get soup on a 101 degree day? I did. And I'll do it again, pho sure. We stumbled out of the forest fire heat from the parking lot into this oasis. After quickly ordering limeade, I decided to have the pho with chicken (sorry, I phoget what it's called--pho ga, perhaps?) with extra noodles. I had to choose which was more important: Eat my pho with chopsticks and end up wearing it on my shirt, or eat my pho with a fork and look like a stupid American who can't adapt very well. I decided that either choice would cause my dignity to suffer, but it was preferable to not wear my food. I think it was barely five minutes before our food arrived, and our waiter didn't even flinch when I requested a fork. Bless him. I wish we had more than two very small wedges of lime in our mountain of sprouts, basil, and jalapenos, but perhaps I'm being a stupid American again. I just love lime. Now, don't shoot me, but the pho tasted about 20 times better than it smelled. I don't remember it smelling quite like this when I had it before. It doesn't matter, because it was delicious. I only wish I remembered to order some bubble tea to accompany it. The restaurant itself is nondescript, but very clean. All the staff were very pleasant and helpful. I live in the area so I always go here because it is the closest. It's like any hybrid pho place that sells things besides pho. The summer rolls are skinny, but taste fine. The pho is a hit or a miss. Some days it can be good, some days it can be very subpar. What's really mediocre consistently is their vinegar onions. I taste more onion than anything! I know a lot of pho places say no MSG, but I think it's all baloney. I occasionally get very bad migraines 20-30 minutes after eating. The staff is very nice and attentive and I love the fact you can pay with credit it. Overall, if I'm in the area, I'll eat here. read more

This is my first time writing a review on Yelp, but after reading a review saying that they are not a family friendly restaurant, I feel like I owe it to those good people to say something. Pho Real is the best pho place in the area. The food is fresh, the pho broth is clear and tasty. And they are definitely family friendly. Our toddler is 21 months and we've brought her to pho real a couple of times. The first time, we forgot her bib and she left a mess on the floor. I tried to clean up a little before leaving, but they politely told me they'd take care of it. The second time (last weekend) my toddler dropped her spoon twice and twice, unprompted, they immediately brought a clean spoon for her. Always with a smile. So, I find it odd that someone would say on here that they are not welcoming to kids. My take on it is, if you respect them, they will respect you. This place has some of the best pho that I have had in Silver Spring. The food is fast and fresh. I usually order the food to go and on the downside, they only give you one small container of hoisin and another for sriracha. I always ask for more for good flavor. If you order beef pho, try it with raw meat. The meat is sliced so thin that the broth cooks it so that its still really tender. It's so good. Nice bright space in a little shopping center a block on Briggs Chaney away from the big shopping center off US 29. Their small bowl is a bit smaller than the regular bowl at my usual place, but sufficient for a filling supper. The broth is medium bodied, a bit sweet, with a nice aroma. Standard toppings of royal basil, bean sprouts, jalapenos, and lime. They have chili sauce as well as sriracha and hoisin, and a bottle of fish sauce if you really want to go ethnic Vietnamese. Good portions of noodles and nice tender beef. Tasted my GF's chicken pho and it was good too. Cordial service. A solid four **** choice, not quite up to my favorite Pho 88 in Beltsville. read more

It was a cold rainy night and I was craving nothing other than Pho soup. I just had to have it. I didn't want to go to our usual spots and felt like exploring to try a new Pho spot. My partner and I drove about 20 minutes from our place to get here. It was kinda creepy getting here in the dark rain just because we had to drive through some deserted areas with nothing but trees. We arrived to a full parking lot full of awful and incompetent drivers, so parking took a little bit of time. We had to circle around a few times. We were welcomed by a sweet older lady who immediately brought us to a table against the wall. We sat down and the server approached us immediately. It was fairly busy and became busier through the night. The service was good. Quick and very attentive. My partner ordered the #1 soup which is the standard combination meat soup which she loved and I had the vegetarian with beef broth pho soup, with tripe on the side. Their vegetarian soup came with bok choy, broccoli and tofu which I really love veggies in my soup. I didn't care for the tofu - it was soft and blah. The veggies were fresh and good. The tripe was delicious and generous. The only downfall to my soup was that the soup was very bland and watery. Didn't taste like beef broth. I think I might have gotten the vegetarian broth instead. They offer the vegetarian in 3 different broth flavors, and probably made an error on mine. Regardless, I enjoyed my bowl of goodness and sipped on my partner's delicious beef broth between every couple bites! We also had the spring rolls and summer rolls with no pork for an appetizer. Both were very good. The summer roll had just the right amount of noodle in it. Sometimes they overpower it with too much noodle filling. This was just right. The spring rolls are good, but not the best ever. Price - A little higher than some other places. Small bowl runs for about $7 - $8. Now the weather has cooled off, I can enjoy the comfort of a nice hot bowl of soup. When I desire a good hot bowl of soup, ph immediately comes to mind. We sniffed out a place the north Silver Spring area named Ph Real. Despite the ridiculous name, we decided to give it a try. We were glad we did. We couldn't decide between the summer rolls or the spring rolls. Being the peace-loving diplomatic people we are, we decided to order both to ensure everyone's complete enjoyment. Holy moly they were good and we each had our favorite selection. I preferred the spring rolls packed with shrimp and pork dipped in that irresistible peanut sauce. Ms. Classy loved the summer rolls with the always-pleasing fish sauce. For those of you who never tried fish sauce, don't let the name scare you away. If it does, just don't let them tell you what you're having and I'm sure you will love it. Next came what we were both eagerly anticipating, the ph. This is one of the many reasons I'm glad Ms. Classy chose me: she opened my world to so many things, one of which being ph, and I am ever grateful. I especially love the fresh basil. Make sure you tear the leaves and not just pluck them for maximum flavor. But it's the tang of the hoisin sauce that really makes the dish. Make sure to add some chili sauce to add that final zip to your sip. We split one large bowl for $7.50 so this qualifies one of the best cheap eat deals I can find. For the final treat, we ordered a coconut bubble tea for the road. They only have tapioca pearls in case you had a preference for tapioca or jelly. Will we go again? Yes. A craving for pho coincidentally arrived with real winter weather, and really, what better way to warm up than a gigantic bowl of steaming soup? I was a huge fan of a different pho place in CA, and have since begun my search for an East Coast alternative. The soup was really tasty, but a bit milder flavor than I prefer. A huge portion of noodles made it seem like the portion of meat was rather small, but this offset ratio was made up for in freshness of the ingredients. I don't know if it was just the luck of the draw , but I got the least beat up, prettiest, freshest basil and sprouts at this place that I've ever seen (and I love plenty of basil in my pho). A huge bowl will run you about $8. I also got the limeade which was perfectly sweetened, and made fresh! If the name of this place doesn't bring at least a hint of a smile to your face you must have lost your sense of humor somewhere. The hosts were very attentive, and the restaurant itself was clean and well maintained. Although it was late at night (around 9 pm) several more people came in to get their pho fix! There's not much I can say that hasn't already been said in the dozens upon dozens of stellar reviews for this establishment. Nevertheless, here's my 2 cents: Food: Clear, flavorful and clean tasting broth, not too greasy or overly spiced. It's consistent over the years I've visited. Noodles are chewy, not hard and clumpy or broken in small pieces. Their sprouts are always crisp and fresh looking, not wilted and browning like some other pho places. I feel like their summer rolls have gotten smaller over time, but they are fresh and tasty. Staff: Attentive waitstaff, but not overwhelmingly so. Just right. Efficient service. Owners are really nice too. Storefront: Clean, with simple decor. Nothing fancy. Location: The strip mall that it is located in is pretty cramped, so watch out for cars backing out when pulling into the lot. Parking can get a little hectic but there should almost always be a spot even if you have to walk a little, it won't be that far. Prices: Slightly more expensive than comparable pho places, but worth it in my opinion. Tip for pho newbies: you don't want to take your leftovers home.. the noodles don't keep well. read more

I have had lots of pho. Some good and some not so good. Pho real is fantastic. Their soup is very clean and light (not in flavor). The noodles were cooked AL dente which I like in pho. OK I've been here a couple of times. They have a real solid line up. Everything is super fresh. The Pho broth really is expectational - all though a bit different than other I have had. Pho yeah! This place is great. My husband and I ordered take-out. The (presumable) owner was incredibly friendly, the service was fast, and the meal was inexpensive. We ordered 2 summer rolls, 1 large bowl #5, and 1 large bowl of #10. The fixings with the bowls were standard(onion, noodles, Thai basil, mung bean sprout, and jalapeño) and ample in portion. The meat was all very tender and thinly sliced. It complimented the broth very well. Oh that broth!!! There was so much depth of flavor and yet it was refreshing and light. I'm a Pho addict as someone else put it before me, and went to this place with high expectations to get what the reviewers describe as a great pho experience but quite honestly, this is by far the worst pho I have ever had in this area. The place is nice, service is great, but the pho is way bland, a clear, watery (yeah, I know, it's soup), unflavored broth with overcooked meat. The portion was pretty big. I had to add a lot of fish sauce and request soy sauce to get some flavor out of it. I don't like to give this type of reviews, I noticed it's a family business, but I simply have had waaaay better pho in other places in Silver Spring, and I think that by now I have tried them all. Ordinarily I wouldnt write a review for a pho place. But Pho Real has given me consistently good service so I figured why not. It's my favorite place for pho (after homemade!) It's always good service whenever I visit. And during the off peak hours they'll give you more noodles and meat. I usually order carry out. They only ever need about five to ten min heads up, sometimes less. Their avocado smoothies are super smooth and the perfect sweetness. I've been coming to this place for years. It's my favorite Pho place because they don't rely too heavily on the anise flavor, like so many other places do. I always order a small #15 (eye round). Of the meats, I actually think their chicken is the best, but the chicken broth is bland compared to the beef broth. It's definitely worth it to get the beef broth. The soup comes with onions, cilantro mixed with green onions, a large heap of noodles (that finish cooking in the heat of the broth, so it doesn't look like much until you break up the clump), and meat (if you want it). They also offer thai basil, bean sprouts, lime, and jalapeños... as well as plum sauce, sriracha, and fish sauce. But I don't feel like it needs most of that. I just add a little bit of lime and I'm good to go. The serving sizes are quite filling. I've never finished a small. My husband (who can eat quite a lot) has done it only a few times. But if you're worried that it won't be enough food, I recommend starting with an order of Summer Rolls. They're some of the best I've found (if only they would add some mint...) To drink, I recommend the hot tea and young coconut. The hot tea is a steal at 50 cents per person, and it has a great flavor. The young coconut is the best around: sweet and refreshing, with large slices of coconut meat rather than small chunks. I've gotten my dad addicted to it. They recently started serving Thai Tea, which doesn't quite have the right authentic flavor but is tasty nonetheless. I'd get it without bubbles, though. Their tapioca isn't the best. (The best bubble tea is at Bubble Tea Cafe in Rockville.) Overall, this place is just great for comfort food. I can't speak toward the authenticity, but I do often come with a Vietnamese friend of mine; I figure that if he likes it, it must be pretty good. And it's convenient, especially now that they've started taking credit cards. Parking is abundant, though a bit tight. And while many people warn against getting take-out, I find that it turns out fine as long as you heat the broth back to boiling before adding the noodles. Pho Real may be in the cramped Briggs Chaney strip mall, but the pho is right on. This may be the best pho east of the Rockville classics. The soup is exactly what it should be: clear, flavorful, with the right hint of star of anise. Every combo of meats I've tried has been excellent, and all of the add-ins have been fresh. I've been there several times and they are consistently busy but there's never a significant wait, even for carry out. Service is efficient and friendly. This is a great pho joint. They are very courteous and the people are very nice inside. I had to give blood that day so went here after to get some food. I have a nice Large Bowl #9 with extra meat. They brought it out in two bowls one with the meat and one with both meat and noddles. The vegetables were very fresh and they tasted very good. The broth is not a thick as some but it is still a very clean good broth. I am sure their other food is great. Never had a chance to really try anything else.
