So my ratings of Pho places came from living in the Bay area and going to a lot of Pho places in San Jose with mostly asian colleagues. Pho is one of the best of asian foods, so I want it to be special. Pho Hoang is average but edible. Of Humboldt restaurants it is close to my favorite. The food actually has flavor and is not overcooked. It is comparable to the average Pho joints in the bay area, something that puts it well above most of the eateries in Humboldt. This is my go to when I need some good Vietnamese food. It's hands-down, the best Vietnamese in all of Humboldt oh County (there's 2 places lol). I will get the combo vermicelli with steak, shrimp and pork and my wife always gets the combination pho. Both are very tasty and the next time I go, I will try to get the Vietnamese sandwich. I was really excited to find a Vietnamese restaurant passing through town, saw the great reviews, but was disappointed when our meals came out. The tofu vermicelli came with three tiny pieces of tofu, the broccoli and lettuce were wilted. The other veggies also didn't look fresh. The only flavor was from the peanut sauce and I asked for a second side of it so I could eat my noodles. My partners veggie stir fry had a hair in it. There aren't many places for Vietnamese Pho (soup) in Humboldt County but we are lucky to have a good one on G St in Arcata. I usually have the Pho with chicken, but my sister loves the steak version, and I also enjoyed the one with beef meatballs. Wish they had the kind with fried pork belly, but that is wish to build a dream on! lol In addition they have other delicious Vietnamese dishes and some familiar Thai offerings as well as Vietnamese Iced Coffee ( what a treat if you are a coffee lover!) and Thai Iced Tea to top off your dining experience. I have been coming here quite often ever since Spring of 2014. Their chicken fried rice is delicious , especially with the hot sauce. The mango smoothie with boba is good and their coconut shrimp is very sweet and savory. I called a few days in advance to make a reservation for October 1 and the staff did an exceptional job in customer service and making sure they took good care of a group of 30. I give them props for keeping their cool in getting all the food at a timely manner. I can't thank them enough for taking good care of my friends and providing us with exceptional customer service. Ordered A2, Fresh Spring Roll to go. $9 + $1 tip. Got to Redwood park to eat and found the rolls to be just shrimp and lettuce (and rather small), NO noodles. I ate one, and went back. They said they changed it. I said that they should have changed the menu. They said there was extra lettuce. I said lettuce is not noodles. So I left, never to return. Gave the remaining 2 rolls to a homeless man along with $20, turning the negative experience into a positive one. I will never go back to this restaurant. read more

Such a great option in town. The pho broth is light and flavorful while the rice noodles are in such a great quantity that it's impossible to leave hungry. The only thing I could think to ask is different sizes for the soups. It's a BIG bowl that you get, for a good price too! Not that there were available tables. People seated after us had orders taken and foods brought before we could literally shout for one of the TWO waiters working to take our order. They brought our food to the neighbors table -twice. They brought five plates of food to our neighbors on five different occasions - none of which was for them. On the plus side, all of the food was terrific. Really, really good. It was fine. I didn't think it was bad or anything but I have been to much better Vietnamese restaurants. I think the only way to describe it is that the yellow curry, chicken vermicelli, and lemongrass chicken spring rolls didn't have enough flavor for my liking. Staff was friendly, attentive and quick. Friendly, quick service, delicious food -- what more could you want? I was hesitant to try pho, as I am with most new food. But my friend talked me into it and I'm so glad he did. The first thing I got was the V5: egg noodle plate with tofu and mixed veggies. Not really knowing what I was doing, I ordered the noodles crispy. I couldn't recommend that more. It's a bit tricky to eat but the crunch is so worth it. The tofu is cooked perfectly: crispy on the outside, well-seasoned, and tender on the inside. And the Thai tea is amazing. The food comes out within minutes. I don't know how they do it, but it's always hot and fresh and consistently good. I've never waited for a table and the servers are always attentive but don't hover. Honestly I don't know why somebody wouldn't like this place. Tip: Instead of waiting for the check, just go up to the register. It's faster and they don't mind a bit. read more

IF YOU'RE VIETNAMESE, DON'T EAT HERE. I wish the Yelp reviews had warned me how bad the food is at this place before coming in and wasting $50 on food that taste absolutely nothing like authentic Vietnamese Pho. As a Vietnamese American from the Bay Area, I enjoy a bowl of Pho at least once a week. There's certain standards and flavors that we come to expect. Today, we made a long trip to Eureka. Our favorite ramen shop on G St. was closed, so we settled for this place. We ordered Chicken Pho, Beef Pho and Bun Bo Hue (spicy Hue style noodles). The food we got did not taste like Pho or Bun Bo at all. First, the Bun Bo did not have the right type of noodle. It was more like a bowl of Beef Pho with spicy seasoning. My wife couldn't finish it bc it's so bad. I couldn't finish my bowl of Chicken Pho either bc it was full of MSG. The chicken was large chunks of steamed chicken, instead of lean cuts of pulled chicken as it suppose to be. They barely gave us any herbs. The papaya salad was stale and had a strange taste. We were pretty hungry after a long drive, but unable to eat the stuff they gave us. Service was horrible since we were the only Asians in the store, and they probably know we'd disapprove of their food. Now I understand Arcata is far from everything, so it's hard to make good Vietnamese food when u don't have fresh supplies. But the food they gave us couldn't possibly be classified as Vietnamese. To the average Caucasian patron, they probably can't distinguish that this is really bad Viet food. But if you're Viet, please don't come in here for the love of god. Last week it was amazing! This time around, food arrived so cold that the meat for pho wouldn't cook. Also, we paid for a couple of boba tea -- instead of boba teas, we were given frozen drinks with pink balls at the bottom (soda straws were provided but not the fat straws that are usually accompanied with boba teas.) When we called the restaurant to complain about the cold food and missing drinks, the restaurant told us that they were out of boba, yet they wouldn't refund our money. They also didn't care that everything was cold and that it all ended up in the trash! Horrible experience! read more

This is one of our go to dinner spots. It can be a little busy and you might rubbing elbows with a perfect stranger but that's a great way to make new friends I suppose. I always get the Chicken Pho (also great for when your sick....or maybe had a drink or two too many the night before).
