This place was recommended to us by an acquaintance. The location, parking and ambiance was nice. Friendly, warm greetings. We were there for carryout. We were specific in ordering Pho with Shrimp, and when we got home it was Pho with Beef. We called back and the lady was very nice and asked us to come back for the correct order. However, we wished we would have checked the order in details before we left, or Pho Chi would have showed us what was in the bags. Honestly, this beautiful, warm establishiment needs to UPGRADE the cash register receipt system to receipts that reflect the itemized ordered food items for instances like these. Our word vs theirs. Sometimes a 3.5-rating can mean excellent food, but horrible service. Other times, it can mean just average food and average service. We came here for dinner and my experience was more the latter. The location screams hole-in-the-wall. The menus were wrapped in plastic and were wrinkly/beat-up. It was unappealing... I would recommend refreshing their menus or offering a QR code to scan (but I'm not even sure they have a website). I ordered the pho tai bo vien (pho with eye of round beef and meatballs). The wait was inexcusably slow. They weren't busy and it wasn't peak dinner time. Even just bringing the waters took a while. There was no communication about the delays; they simply ignored us until we finally inquired on the wait - we were then told the food would be out shortly. The food finally came and they provided the additional garnishes- bean sprouts, basil, cilantro, limes, etc. Condiments were already on the table. For the wait, the food was nothing to write home about. No complaints about the proteins, but the flavor of the broth was lackluster. The Food: Went with a bowl of Pho Tai for this visit. Wanted a large, but they only have one size. The Pho was good, just an average bowl though. Nothing noteworthy that stuck out in terms of flavor and quality. The broth was good, the meat quality was good as well. I will say, the amount of noodles I had for the one size bowl was not enough. I could clearly see the empty space in my bowl of soup. Otherwise, a decent bowl. The Service: Service was good. Staff are friendly. Food was brought out in a timely manner. Slightly different flavor and presentation. All the food I have had here is very good. This is in an out of the way run down strip mall and failed beer store. They still have coolers full of beer, and some cheap wine, but I never see anybody buy it. Maybe it's a local stop for cheap 6 packs. Anyway, don't let that distract you. The places with the cheap rent usually have the best food. $19 for Pho and an iced coffee. Prices are increasing for Pho everywhere, though. Grilled meats, fried rice, and rolls (rice and spring) are standard comfort food options but the pho leaves a bit to be desired. For starters, there's only one size, which is a medium at other restaurants. Second, although two of ordered pho, we were only given a single-serving sized bean sprout and mint leaf plate. Third, the servings of meat seemed smaller than those at other pho restaurants. Finally, there's no tripe of any type on the menu. This hole in the wall is great and easy to miss because it's behind a fire station. They have some more options than just pho here. They also have rice plates and vermicelli noodles. We got an order of egg rolls and there are 2 per order. And it's really packed with meat, less noodles and less veggies than what you typically get. They're pretty solid and hit the spot if I'm craving some real egg rolls. I got the Bún Bò Huế, which was described as a pho broth made with lemongrass. But I would say it's closer to a spicy beef noodle soup and the noodles are thicker and chewier than pho noodles. I've had this dish home made all my life, and this was actually better than my moms. My bowl had enough for 2 servings, but then again I always eat smaller portions than the average person. It also comes with a plate of salad and herbs to put in the noodles. Don't skip this step! This pho spot is tucked away behind a gas station and Dunkin Donuts off of Montgomery village and I didn't even know It was there until my friend suggested to go there because of their awesome late night hours! It was fairly late to get food, maybe 11pm and this place stays open past midnight. Honestly, I was pleasantly surprised by this place. It is a weird location and the ambiance of the place is odd, it's as if they turned a convenience store into a restaurant but kept the walk in freezer to sell beer and wine. This is a family owned restaurant and you can surely tell, but that's something I appreciate. So It seems like an odd chaotic environment at times because you will hear them shout in Vietnamese here and there, but I get It, because It reminded me of my family. This review is solely on the PHO BOWLS. For the price you pay? I feel like Pho Nam and Pho Viet kind of takes the cake on the amount of meat they put inside these bowls. If you pay for an extra portion of meat, its like a regular bowl at Pho Nam and Pho Viet. The broth? Is more tasty, which can be good/bad for some peoples taste buds. I personally do not like high salted food and thought it tasted extremely salty and my husband that LOVES salty food!! Thought the broth was the BEST out of all the Pho places we have been too. lol I think Pho Nam is just right. The way they package their food TOGO was nice!! Seems like they are more generous on the fixings (sprouts,mint,lime) then the meat. lol The noodles were perfect portion. I got the bun bo hue and it was surprisingly spicy! I can handle my spice too. The broth was delicious however a little skimpy on the noodle volume. I practically ate all the noodles in 5 spoonfuls. Pho Chi is in a unique spot and it is a hybrid liquor store! When arriving the owner's child (aged around 13?) greeted us and he was very helpful in getting us seated. The tables are all numbered so they'll tell you which table number to go to. The child asked us for took our orders and his mother (I assume) brought out the food. I ordered the Pho Tai which is rice noodles in a beef broth with eye-round beef and asked for no cilantro. Real good Pho broth, etc...open late- like midnight! There are many Pho places in the Rockville-Gaitherburg area but for those who care about the true broth, then this is in the top tier. Pho 95 on the Pike started it all for us years ago and had the bar set pretty high. From time to time, other places have come close to that quality, but only for short periods of times leading to inconsistency, and then they dropped back into losing the true Pho broth flavor that Pho Chi has always had and still offers. They are also a beer and wine store but please do not think that makes their attention to the food any less. It does not. The service is friendly and the cost is on par with its competitors, but as I said, the quality here is better, esp. on the Pho. Other than the Pho (which is a good portion regardless of the choice of meat, and ingredients) other highlights are the spring & summer rolls AND the lemon chicken & pork chop on rice are a favorite of mine when I am extra hongry!!. The slightly crispy chicken and pork chop (like a quick char) goes great with rice and I must add the fish sauce. A must! You can also add an egg which works great with the rice and the meat (or anything else really-- if you can get the yolk to run on the rice, well its gonna be a fun feast). If you take a look at the menu, it skips numbers! The 2 items you want are somewhere between 7 and 11 haha (Ask for the "number 8"! Which I have designated as the Kobe Pho number. "Number 9" is the Bun Bo Hue.) :D Kobe pho is a unique specialty here. Kobe refers to meat from a specific breed of cattle from Japan. Is it likely that Pho Chi is serving this meat? Maybe, maybe not. But the point is the meat is delicious! Much better than your average eye-of-round steak slices. The Bun Bo Hue is another fan favorite! The noodles are a thicker rice vermecelli with chicken meat. It's got a great balance of spicy, salty, and sourness! I have yet to order this as the spiciness is quite intidimading... But I managed to bum a spoonful from a friend and it was deliciously spicy. The kind that would make my nose run instantly. One day, I will have to venture new territory and order this! I came here with a group of Yelpers for dinner. It was a chilly evening so getting pho was perfect. I started off with the Avocado Smoothie and the Egg Rolls. The smoothie was really good, light, and not overly sweet. The Egg Rolls were really crispy and the meat and veggie filling was minced well together. Yelper Chris L. recommended the Kobe Beef Pho and since it was a special item, I went with that. You knew it was going to be amazing just by looking at it and smelling the aroma of the broth. It was delicious! The broth was very flavorful and had a good amount of chopped green onions and cilantro. The Kobe beef is not actually real Kobe, but it was still very fresh and tender. Besides pho, Pho Chi also has rice dishes, bahn mi, and other noodle dishes. I've had a pork rice dish before. I remember it being good, but not very filling or maybe I was just super hungry that night. It is one of those mom and pop, hole-in-the-wall pho joints so don't expect any fancy decor. It's located inside a beer and wine store that is kind of tucked away and may not be the easiest to find. Just turn right in to the parking lot after you pass Dunkin Donuts. I just went back here with my family, had a bowl of Pho and the broth was so darn good that I didn't even need the hoisin or sriracha to jazz it up!! I mean I love sriracha because I love spicy but the jalapenos were enough and I didn't want to mess with perfection. We all wanted to eat it slowly because we didn't want it to end. Came here with two friends for lunch today on the way to Costco (solid location). We shared Summer Rolls and I had the Beef Vermicelli and Avocado Smoothie. The Summer Rolls came out quickly and were good. Not the best I've had (the skin was a little thick), but we still gobbled them up. I really enjoyed my Beef Vermicelli: the meat was well-grilled and the fried onions added a nice touch. The downer was when I uncovered a tiny hair in my noodles, but mistakes happen. You have to use their home-made hot sauce, it goes really well with their noodle soup. I also tried their Lemongrass Pork & Spring Roll with Vermicelli ($8.50), it's very tasty.
