I'm ashamed that it's taken me so long to try this place! I am adding it to my top 5 Baton Rouge…read morerestaurants.
IMO, the perfect way to dine is slow, ordering multiple small plates and sipping on handcrafted drinks.
With perfectly executed dishes and the most insane flavor profiles, Chow Yum is the perfect place to do just that.
My friend and I got "the Mandu" app (MY FAV); the hot honey chicken, fried shrimp, and pork belly bao buns; the wookie wings (my friend's fav); and the chilled crab claws.
To drink, we ordered The Ginger (mocktail), the Spritz (mocktail), the miso coconut old fashioned, and the frozen "snake wrangler" rum cocktail. All delish.
*The Mandu consisted of fried dumplings stuffed with spicy bulgolgi beef and topped with white queso. Rich and indulgent, right? Yes...but it doesn't stop there! Every dish here is a perfectly balanced party in your mouth. You'll also bite into Gochujang aioli, fresh cilantro, kimchi salsa, and pickled jalapeños. So freaking good.
*The Wookie wings were crispy and tossed in a delicious sriracha-butter glaze (buffalo style), drizzled with green chili aioli, and topped with fried shallots + green onions. They were also served with a generous portion of the MOST delicious pickles!! I'd order those on their own.
*The chilled crab claws were refreshing and flavorful. They were covered in a citrus coconut curry sauce and topped with their chili crisp (yall, their chili crisp may be the best I've had) and cherry tomatoes...served with naan for extra dipping! We used it to lick up extra sauce from the wings, too. Also, wow--I was served some of the biggest crab claws I've ever seen.
*Now to the boa buns: Chow yum doesn't skimp on the fillings or the flavor + the bao buns are soft and pillowy (if you've ever had stale, chewy bao, you know--it ain't it).
The fried chicken one is drizzled with hot honey and served with pickled onions and Boursin cheese. The cheese spread is unexpected and the best part. (5/5).
The fried shrimp was bahn-mi styled with pickled veggies, aioli, jalapeños, and cilantro. The shrimp was notably large with the perfect texture. It was good, but I liked the other two better flavor-wise. (4/5)
The pork belly was served with hoisin sauce, spicy aioli, kimchi, and cilantro. Again, the texture on the pork belly was perfect and so was the balance of flavors. (5/5)
*The drinks were great. None were overly sweet, and they were all tasty. $6 for a mocktail is a great price!
Overall, I thought the prices were very reasonable (only $14 for crab claws?!). The service was great. We enjoyed lovely patio weather. The food came out very fast and was all hot/fresh. We didn't leave a crumb or drip of sauce on any plate. It was that good...we wanted to order wayy more food to try, but we were full (booo). Anyway. If you go--sounds like you can't go wrong with anything--but definitely try the Mandu and the hot honey chicken and pork belly bao.
**Happy hour has bao buns for $3.50 each!! Take advantage!**
