Chow Main has triumphantly reopened under the leadership of legendary Baton Rouge restauranteur Paul Wong! Mr. Wong and his family have been operating Asian restaurants in our area since the late 1960s. The new motto for Chow Main is Chinese Classics and American Favorites. Today, I had a lunch special with two entrees and one side, and I added an egg roll. It was filling, but healthier than many other lunch choices we have downtown. The price was definitely nice! What is also nice is Paul and his staff. They really are great people. Chow Main has a good amount of seating indoors, and outdoor seating as well right on Main Street. One could also get your meal to go, and eat in the Main Street Market's seating area, or take it back to your place. It's great to see this eatery on the southwest corner of the Galvez Garage re-opened and serving great food for a good price! Downtown lunch options are looking up again! read more

I went to the old Paul Wong's restaurant in Port Allen and so I sign saying that they were permanently closed but a new restaurant opened in Baton Rouge called Chow Mein. So I figured I would give them a try one day and today just so happened to be that day. I ordered a shrimp and chicken dish which was okay at best. Not even close to the quality of the old place in Port Allen. Also playing with charged more on my credit card then what was displayed in the restaurant. I did leave a tip but it was in the tip jar and not on my card. So if I ever return here again I'll have to double check with the cashier to make sure that I'm not charged the wrong amount again. read more

I felt the need to update my review after my last visit at the ever so inspiring Chow Main located in downtown Baton Rouge. I got word that they incorporated asian fried wings into their menu at this restaurant and for how much I love asian fried chicken I felt the need to try it out asap. They had numerous of different flavors but we decided to try a few of them which were the choo-choo, miso honey, daosi gravy, and lastly the kung's POW which was a spicy dry rub I wanted to try. As you can tell by the photos I uploaded of the chicken which looked amazing and tasted even better! The most suprising was the daosi wings which consisted of a black bean gravy which has alot of umami flavor. The daosi wings was spectacular with how much flavor I was getting from the gravy, I was constantly dipping my wings into the pool of umami packed black bean flavor. I think if I had any rice on the side I would've finished the daosi wings gravy all the way! The choo choo wings was great as well, they had a very subtle sweetness as well as some good heat to it. Kung's POW wings contained a spicy dry rub on it that really had me constantly licking my fingers to get as much flavor as I can. Lastly the Miso honey which honestly might've been my favorite really quenched my craving of asian fried chicken in south Louisiana. The Miso honey had such a nice subtle honey sweetness that was not overly sweet or salty from the miso in it as well. Chow Main strives to constantly improve their menu as well as flavor without sacrificing simplicity. I can honestly say that Chow Main may as well be my favorite restaurant I discovered in 2020 even though the year isn't over. They have left such a everlasting impression on me through the few times I've been that I'm excited to see what they will bring next and look forward to the next time I'm back! read more

Let me preface this review by saying that this only pertains to the dish I ordered. I've eaten the different variations of chicken wings here and they were phenomenally delicious. This time, I ordered the Taiwanese Beef Noodle soup. The first time I had this dish, it was cooked correctly using chunks of Beef Chuck/Fatty Brisket that were slow cooked and melted in your mouth. This time, they used a very lean cut of sirloin slices. You either cook sirloin medium rare to medium to keep it juicy or tender or cook it until it's almost falling apart. The meat in this instance wasn't cooked long enough. It didn't absorb the flavor of the broth and was tough. Additionally, the noodles were cooked past al dente and just fell apart when eating Traditionally, beef shank is used for Taiwanese Beef Noodle soup. The meat from the shank is cut into chunks then braised in a flavorful broth until very tender. Unfortunately, this takes a lot of time and Chow Main has taken short cuts to get it out faster and to adjust to the taste of Baton Rouge folks. I still don't think the prices match the food. But I had lunch here today because I needed something fast and quick, and my experience was a lot more pleasant than the last one. The food was a lot better, in quality and freshness. Still, I don't think I would crave going back, but it gets brown points for being something you can really pick up on the go. read more

Chow Main is a great place to grab a quick lunch that is very reasonably priced considering the amount of food that you receive in you order. I really enjoyed the roasted chicken and they offer a nice variety of side options to choose from. The staff was incredibly helpful and the owner personally came out to thank me for trying them which was very thoughtful. My only concern was that some of the food was a tad greasy for my taste which hindered my attempt at eating healthy sides. read more

Mediocre food, non competitive versus other fast casual. The idea of an asian chipotle sounds very good in theory, but this place didn't delivery. It is set up where you can pick your protein (chicken, beef pork, etc) with an Asian zing. I tried the mala spicy chicken; it wasn't very spicy nor did it have any Sichuan taste. It was most chili oil and vinegar. After the base you get to pick a carb (lo mein, white rice or fried rice). The white rice was dry and over cooked, even though we got there right after it opened. Lastly, you get two sides. I got broccoli and balsamic brussel sprouts. The broccoli was ok but the sprouts were not good. They had a charred bordering on burned flavor and not like the nearly carmelized ones that are very popular right now. Lastly, it is more expensive than similar fast casual restaurants- it was about $10. I'd rather go to chipotle, serops, lit pizza, etc. read more

This location is under construction but paul welcomed us and shared his lunch with my mom who is 78 years old and wanted soup. Grand reopening in August. This is my favorite place to grab lunch in downtown--the food is always fresh, hot, and incredibly delicious. My favorite thing about Chow Main is that you can "Build Your Own Bowl" which means you can completely customize your order without feeling like a nuisance, so it's great for picky eaters or people with allergies! And, another plus, the atmosphere inside is so nice. The music is always great and the staff is super friendly--Austin even makes an effort to get to know his returning customers which is pretty cool. Also, don't pass on the egg rolls--they're amazing!! Anyway, I'd definitely recommend trying Chow Main if you're in the area! read more
