Jasmine Tea
Albert T.

Phnom Penh is POPULAR. Visiting on a Monday for an early dinner around 5, we were greeted with a 75 minute wait for a table for our party of 5. I'm not normally nearly patient enough to wait that long for a restaurant, but one person in our party insisted that the food was good enough to wait for, so we bought some drinks at a nearby cafe and sat down for the long haul. Phnom Penh is remarkably accurate with their timing. We got a text 70 minutes later telling us to come back, and it took another 5 minutes or so to get the table set up. Tea (Complementary) - The waitress claimed this was Jasmine tea, but while flowery, the entire table agreed that this wasn't a traditional Jasmine green tea. Maybe a Cambodian variation? The tea is nice though, not astringent, clearly green tea forward in flavor with nice flowery undertones. Butter Beef ($24.95) - This dish is a masterpiece in aesthetics, with a ring of slightly seared beef surrounding a saucy interior, reminding me of bands of rocky sandstone Badlands cliffs around a desert oasis. As the name implies, the beef really is buttery smooth, so thinly sliced into glass-like panes that there's no chewing whatsoever required to gulp a piece down. There's a strong saltiness in the sauce, and the beef itself is heavily acidic, like mouthpuckering vinegar. Crunchy fried garlic bits grace the top to bring some texture to the otherwise meltingly tender dish. Given how thin the beef is, I'd guess there's actually only an ounce or two of meat on this plate. (4/5) Phnom Penh Chicken Wings, Large ($23) - These are lightly battered fried chicken wings, liberally dusted with a salt, white pepper, sugar, and msg mixture. While not required, dipping it into the puckering lemon sauce on the side really gives a lemon pepper wing flavor profile, only more aromatic and savory. Without the lemon pepper, it tastes very similar to a Taiwanese popcorn chicken but sweeter and enhanced with more msg. The fry is nice, giving a lightly crisp exterior, which combined with the moist interior and flavor, gives a delightful bite. (4/5) Vietnamese Crispy Crepe ($24.5) - This is a rather larger banh xeo, fried until crispy both above and below. Even though it steams on the plate it's served on, the bottom retains that crispy texture. It has tons of coconut milk mixed in the batter, making the dish extremely sweet. Inside, there are full shrimp, a kind of mashed shrimp/fish paste, sliced pork, bean sprouts, and interesting nodules of I believe are mung bean that almost have an egg yolk-like texture. Veggies are served on the side - I normally use them to essentially make a lettuce wrap around the pancake after slicing, but in this instance, the lettuce is too unwieldy to use. I'm not a fan of either the taste or the construction of this dish. I wonder if it's a Cambodia variation of banh xeo? (3/5) Beef Luc Lac Rice ($19.5) - The beef is decently tender, smothered in a silky sauce that penetrates every crevice in the meat. It's almost like sauce and meat are one entity melded together. Unfortunately the flavor is flat. There's nothing that pops out or otherwise excites the taste buds. It's kind of just there as a filling protein choice. (3/5) Dry Noodles - Kho ($16) - I usually love dry noodles as they come tossed with a flavorful sauce. This one, on the other hand, is one of the blandest dry noodles I've eaten. It's somewhat smoky, but there doesn't seem to be nearly enough sauce in nearly enough concentrated variety for the amount of rice noodles. Otherwise, there are some pieces of pork and chewy organ slices. (2/5) Pea Sprouts ($26) - These are cooked in the same manner any Eastern/SE Asian restaurant would do them - simply with some garlic and broth in a wok. Pretty normal, but good. (4/5) Overall I was disappointed with the food served at Phnom Penh. The entire table agreed that the food was mediocre. There's nothing flavorwise that really pops out, and compared to other Cambodian food I've eaten, it's missing the aromatics and flavor layering. I'm no expert on this cuisine but I definitely don't think it was worth the wait. Washrooms - One for men, one for women, multiple stalls but they are tiny. Food 4* Service 4* Ambiance 3.5 Ordered only the beef pho and butter beef. I wanted to know what the hype was all about. Butter beef was very interesting, never had anything like it, it would have tasted better with waygu beef to get that buttery texture. The pho broth was very clean and flavors were on point, no need to add anything. The only thing I was hoping for were some authentic Cambodian dishes, which I didn't see, other wise it was delicious.

Have a hankering for Cambodian food? Phnom Penh will scratch that itch. They've been a staple of Vancouver's Chinatown for +40 years. They're well-known, so it was no surprise to see a full house when we walked in. Luckily there's a waitlist. We got added to it, then wandered for ~20 minutes before getting a text to return. Efficient service. Efficient kitchen too, given the crowd. I left happy, and with a food coma: - Highlights: beef skewers - Worth trying (recommend sharing with someone, then ordering another dish): the kho (i.e. kuy teav), served "dry" (i.e. pork bone soup on the side) - Honorable mention: morning glory veggie dish Credit accepted. 4.5 stars rounding up. Otherwise the Khmer aunties will get me.

There's a reason why there's a long line. We wait for about 1 hour and 15 mins after putting our name down but the food is really good. We got the butter beef and small chicken wings. The buffer beef is really good. Nothing I have ever tasted. It's vinegary, fresh, a bit salty and sweet. Not too sure how to describe it but it was good! The chicken wings are good as well. The lemon and peppery dipping sauce elevates the dish more. The meat on the chicken was on the smaller side and I wished there was more garlic flavour but overall it was good. The place was pretty busy and entrance is full of people but the service is fairly quick.

Definitely the best chicken wings I've had even without the dipping sauce. The butter beef was also yummy but a bit salty (low sodium soy sauce would have been better for my taste buds). Not recommended for those with noise sensitivities, but if you're not HSP then the lively, busyness adds to the atmosphere. I'd order wings again (for take out). Shorter wait than expected, quick service.

Came early to avoid long wait times, around 4:30-4:45 there was still a 25-minute wait for 2 people. For a small party we only could really order the trifecta: chicken wings, butter beef and bo luc lac. Loved the chicken wings and butter beef. They're as good as everyone says they are and I can understand why they're popular dishes to order. The Bo luc lac was just ok for me. I've had better. Worth trying at least once. Don't think I'd wait 1-2 hours to eat here though.

The Legendary Phnom Penh, in Chinatown Vancouver! It is Vietnamese and Cambodian cuisine. This restaurant has won multiple awards, and is part of the MICHELIN Guide! If you haven't been here yet, you have to try it at least once. The food is super delicious of course. I really liked the butter beef. Ambiance was a typical Asian restaurant, and same with their service. If you have people coming from out of town, I would recommend taking them here to try!

Came back after three years and got the fried rice and crispy chicken wings. The chicken wings and fried rice were tasty! The wait was maybe 30 minutes but we did come very close to the opening time. Service was great considering how busy they were.

This restaurant is part of the Michelin Guide and is raved about consistently so I had to stop by and give it a try! The wait times can be lengthy, we went for an early dinner around 4pm on a weekday and still waited about 45 minutes. The ambiance is just as you'd expect, a traditional Asian banquet hall esthetic. They have large round tables for family seatings and it was pretty clean. There was nothing notable about the service, just the usual. We tried the buttered beef, chicken wings, and dry noodles. Buttered beef - this is one of the dishes they're well known for. I was skeptical at first just from the look, but can confirm it was really good. It's definitely one of the more unique dishes to try. I really loved the vinaigrette as it was a great blend of salty, sweet and savory. It paired well with the beef and the beef was tender. Chicken wings - this is another dish that is really popular at the restaurant. I LOVE garlic and there were heaps of it on top! The chicken is extremely crunchy and packed with lots of flavor. I appreciated that they had a small portion since it was just my husband and I dining. Dry Noodles - this dish was underwhelming and a bit disappointing. I love a good dry noodle dish, but the flavor in the sauce was bland. We decided to ask for vinegar and other sauces to add to the dish, but it just still didn't taste right. If I were to come back, I'd probably stick to what they're popular for and maybe try the shaken beef or wet noodle soup instead. This was still a pretty solid restaurant.

Still good chicken wings. I love that the restaurant is huge and has outlets to charge your phones while you eat. Service is fine. Not much ambiance, just people eating and looking happy.

Bo kho beef stew

Truly a revelation. The chicken wings and cánh chưa was the best I've ever had. The butter beef carpaccio to start the meal set the tone. The shaken beef was good but was certainly not the star. The star were the wings and hot sour viet soup. They will be the reasons why I will make a yearly pilgrimage up from seattle to visit.

Veggie fried rice

I only hear great things about the wings here and being a lover of fried chicken I made it a point to stop here on my quick trip to Vancouver. We came around 4pm so there was no wait but by the time we left at like 5 there was already a line forming outside. We got the wings and veggie fried rice, and it took a bit of time for the food to come out but that didn't bother us. The portion for the fried rice was MASSIVE and could easily feed 3-4 people. It was good, nothing to standout but a very good classic fried rice. The wings came out after and were hot and crispy. It comes with a lemon pepper sauce on the side, which was super lemony - great if you like that but I wasn't too big a fan of it. The wings were juicy and fresh, though I will say I did expect a bit more flavor. There was only one piece at the bottom that had a generous coat of the seasoning which I thought was super tasty. Overall, good spot! I'm not sure I'd wait super long for it, but glad I got to try.

Shrimp Fried Rice

Street parking only. Located in Chinatown. Came in for a late lunch on a Sunday. It was a packed restaurant. We waited for 30-40 minutes for a table of 5. This is a noisy restaurant with customers talking over each other. This is a typical Asian restaurant so we were okay with the noise. Ordered shrimp papaya salad, beef carpaccio, fried garlic chicken wings, ton yum soup, fried squid, and fried rice to share. Portions were humongous. Everything we ordered was delicious and flavorful. Food came out piping hot so it is cook to order. We had to pack food to go. Will definitely come back again if I am visiting Vancouver.

Normally, I'm not the biggest fan of soupy dishes, but somehow, they managed to serve some of the best Bun Rieu and Bun Cha Ca I've ever had. I would even say they were on par with some of the best Vietnamese restaurants I've tried in the US. Both soups were packed with toppings and protein, and the portions were very generous for how affordable the prices were. I was honestly impressed with how much food we got for what we paid. The restaurant itself looks like your typical Vietnamese restaurant, nothing too fancy, with Vietnamese music playing in the background. It had that familiar, casual atmosphere that you would expect from a local Vietnamese spot. The place was pretty packed when we visited, but I would say it's a great option for smaller groups of 2 to 4 if you're looking to get seated relatively quickly. The Vietnamese ladies working there were also incredibly sweet and accommodating. Despite how busy the restaurant was, they provided great service, and I was extremely happy with how we were treated. One thing worth mentioning is that they only accept debit cards or CAD cash, so definitely plan ahead and hit an ATM if you're visiting from the United States. It's a little inconvenient for tourists, but considering the quality of the food and the affordable prices, I really can't complain too much. Overall, great food, generous portions, affordable prices, and wonderful service! I came in without expecting much, especially since I'm not usually a big soup person, but I left genuinely impressed. I would definitely recommend giving this place a try if you're in Vancouver and craving some authentic Vietnamese comfort food. I would happily come back for another bowl of their Bun Rieu or Bun Cha Ca!

However, they were not very observant, as my water was never refilled even after I used it all up. The food was good but not anything special. The noodles were the best part. They were thick, but still cooked perfectly. I ordered the hot and sour pork noodle and it was just okay. I didn't think that the meat or soup had a lot of flavor. The flavor that I could taste was just okay as it wasn't very distinguishable or special in any way. Overall though the dish was fine, just once again not exceptional or special. My favorite thing I ordered was a lychee lemonade. Although it was a bit pricy, it was very good and I highly recommend it. It was not too sweet and not too sour, and it had the perfect amount of lychee flavor. The vibe of the place was just okay, it felt a bit bland. There are not many fun directions or a particularly clean vibe. There are just cans and boxes of ingredients out in the hallway and the place wasn't the cleanest. It's also a pretty small place with minimal seating which is not an issue, just something to note. Overall if you're looking for noodles this isn't a bad place to check out, but in my opinion there are probably better places you could go to. These noodles aren't close to being the best I've had at all, but they weren't bad either. This place is just average or okay. I appreciate the thickness of the noodles and how they were cooked though, and the lychee lemonade (highlight of my visit).
