The coffee products are always solid and consistent, and you know what you are getting. That said, this part of town felt a little sketchy. To use the bathroom, a worker had to escort me and manually open the door instead of just giving a code. Overall, dependable coffee like always. As an out-of-tower from Portland (coffee mecca) I just discovered Philz. This is excellent coffee, especially the Philtered Soul. The veggie breakfast burrito was better than expected, good price too. I wish they would have something better than hot sauce packets though. Interior is pleasant, maybe move the napkins away from the register and offer a water station. Parking is crap. Service is very friendly. read more

I think this is my first Philz coffee that I've been too where I'm actually ordering at a person and not at the bar. It was super nice. The workers were super friendly and helpful when I needed help ordering. The interior had a lot of seating and was super bright. There was a lot of seating outside near it too which would be great on a nice day. Only downside was parking, there isn't a designated parking lot so you'd have to find street parking. I make no secret of my complete and total adoration of Philz Coffee. I live in Austin Texas which has zillions of coffee houses. The top 60% of these are first rate - which means I can get a lot of really good coffee. But we have nothing like Philz. Traditional coffee houses live and die on the espresso drinks. Drip coffee is the runt of the litter and is typically neglected - allowed to get old in the pot. Besides super-upscale steakhouses and the like, The only two establishments in Austin that take drip coffee seriously are Nervous Charley's Bagels and Cherry Creek Catfish. (Yes, a southern style catfish restaurant.) Want good drip coffee for your morning fix? Fuggetaboutit. I go to Philz and I have a choice of eleven completely different drip coffees, Each of them expertly and freshly made. I go weak in the knees. I kill for their Jacob's Wonderbar. I kill for their New Manhattan. I get their pure coffees so rarely that I hate to fool around and mess with flavored blends. But the one time I DID try that - well THAT was blow-away good as well. * * * The Philz Coffee on Ocean Avenue in San Francisco is a totally standard Philz Coffee. Which means it is wonderful. In general, I avoid medium roast coffees because I am a man of extremes. Superheavy - I love you. Superlight - I love you. Middle Roast makes Pikes Place look good. And we all know about Starbucks Pike Place. Well, for once I went out of character and ordered a medium roast. Julie's Ultimate - a ton of cream and no sugar. Julie's Ultimate is the best medium roast coffee that I have ever had in a normal coffee establishment. Sure, if I am dining at a Michelin starred restaurant and There is a cup of coffee at the end of a $300 meal, The coffee that runs in that company is very good. But if I am living responsibly and not destroying my bank account, I could easily make New Manhattan, Julie's Ultimate, and Jacob's Wonderbar The foundation of a happy life. * * * And just for the record, non-drip-coffee coffeehouses ... There is never a season for seasonal lattes. Seasonal lattes are second-stringers. If seasonal drinks were first-line drinks, they would generate enough sales volume to sell them 365 days a year. * * * When it comes to their core coffees, Philz does not run second stringers. 365 days a year they sell the good stuff. read more

The business owner responds to the reviews here but nothing seems to change, even though the complaint is almost always identical: the baristas here move at the pace of a snail and orders are late/service is slow. Seems like a deep-rooted problem with the current staff. Other Philz are usually great. Avoid this one. read more

I love Tesora Coffee. It's one of my favorite coffee chains. As a coffee enthusiast, I tend to visit almost every new coffee spot that opens. When I first discovered Philz Coffee, I ended up going there every day for about two weeks to try their coffee.(It was a similar pattern with Blue Bottle.) I haven't been to Philz very much, so I wasn't sure what to order and this was my first time trying this drink. I originally wanted the regular Philtered Soul, but the cashier recommended the Philtered Soul Cold Brew instead! The cashier seemed very friendly and genuine and I really love someone who recommends drinks like this. The drink itself was very flavourful. I got a large and I finished it within just a couple minutes. I wanted to savour it while I did homework, but it was just too good. It has a very strong coffee and hazelnut taste. I normally wouldn't order hazelnut, but this drink sounded really interesting! It was really amazing! Philz has not yet to let me down. I love the location here as well and how its near CCSF and Riordan High School so that students can come here to study after school. The atmosphere is wonderful and they play good music. read more

I can't quite nudge this review to 4 stars: It took too long to get an iced coffee and iced tea with three baristas doing their thing and a fourth person running the register. You'd figure being a block from a college campus, Philz would be on its game but this spacious cafe with maybe 6-8 people waiting (including us) it wouldn't take nearly 15-18 minutes to get an iced coffee and an iced chamomile tea. They had three baristas! The baristas were in their element, making loud chirpy noises and shouts. One sang along to Kelly Clarkson. It felt like performance art. Maybe it was? After I grabbed my coffee and took a sip, I decided to take the barista up on her offer to to make my iced coffee rose creamier and sweeter. She was suddenly kind and gracious. No one here knows how to make a drink correctly. Everytime i come i have to ask for it to be sweeter and creamier. This time when i asked for it to be changed, instead of putting the spoon they used to mix, away to wash, they put it back into their cup with the rest of the utensils and kept using it, contaminating all the other ones. I've been to this location several times - sometimes checking out with the cashier with an out-of-town friends, on the go with a mobile order, or picking up coffee beans as a souvenir for a visitor. The service consistently has been great and the vibes have been chill. It's a great place to catch up with friends or hunker down to get some work done on the laptop. I love that it's just iced coffee but flavored in a way that's really appealing for latte drinkers as well. I forget the name but I loved the hazelnut one and I ended up concluding that a light to medium in sweetness and creaminess was how I like it. I also tried the mocha flavored one, I think it was Verona or something. It was also very good. Another thing to note is this place has great service line you would find at a mom and pop cafe. I just read this is one of the few locations that have remained open for takeout, and I could see why since the CCSF students proclaimed it their dorm-away-from-dorm from what I saw on my visit. After looking at my statistics in which places I go to as a Yelp elite, that makes me a café crazed dude who's mostly into warmth, hospitality, and some nice portions of pastries enough to fill one's stomach. I can't help but to be in any different cafés to post photos and write a review about them. Philz Coffee will truly be my best place within my neighborhood. If I am to choose what I love to drink, it's chai tea with oat milk while hot cocoa comes in second. Just have to take my face mask off before I take a sip. Again, I'm no coffee drinker since coffee gives me jitters (but I admit I have a decaf with a pair of free donuts last year). I have no problem with the drinks I have. It's up to me whether or not I add more cream and sugar. Pure and unsweetened is always my preference. I'm finally glad the staff members accept cash when Philz was once all contactless payment last year. Plus, going indoor is more comfy. One restriction though: one hour duration. I heard great things about this place, First time at this location, first time trying Philz. I wanted to like this place. I did like the ambience of this place, it's nice. Lots of students. And plenty of seats, even when it looks full. There is also outdoor seating. The girl who helped me was very nice, I told her it's my first time and asked what she recommended for an iced coffee. She suggest the mint one or the regular house "ecstatic" one. So I went with their regular iced coffee. When you place your order, you don't pay at that spot which is different. You pick up your coffee and then walk to the register. Not sure why they do that. It's backwards. However, I didn't like their ecstatic iced coffee. I didn't like the flavor at all and it also tasted very watery. I got the sweetness level in medium. I didn't care that it was still warm with ice, even when the ice melted the coffee wasn't cold. I just didn't like their coffee. I did hang out there for a bit. But close to $6 for a large iced coffee in a hot cup is not worth it to me especially when it doesn't taste very good. COVID-19 Review: If you didn't know, Philz Coffee had an app for you to order ahead of time or schedule a time to pick up which is really convenient! Stopped by for a quick study break/coffee run, and ended up ordering: -Iced Coffee Rosé (+$1) -Iced Philtered Soul My favorite of the two is definitely the Philtered soul, it was creamy, sweet, exactly like a hazelnut latte. Although the Iced coffee rosé was really good too, if you like rose anything, you'll love this. I also really appreciate that they have dairy free options!
