Why can't we do 0 stars, Yelp? Why? Petsmart on Willow Pass is terrible... Particularly for Grooming. DO NOT TAKE YOUR DOG THERE FOR GROOMING!! I have to get my wheaten terrier groomed every month because he's got hair, not fur... and he normally LOVES the groomer. We couldn't get in to our usual spot, so we took him to Petsmart once. When we arrived the second time, he started shaking, dug in his heels and would not go in! We went back to our normal groomer and he was fine - clearly it was this place and these people... not to mention that their prices in my opinion are too high for what they do. You can tell a lot about a place by the way the staff answer the phone. Try calling the "Grooming Salon!" I swear they answer as if they're working for the morgue. There's no, "Hi," or "Thank you for calling PetSmart" -- it's just a deadpan, monotone, somewhat surly, "PetSmart." I should've listened to my gut from the start. We'd never been here before, but our dog needed a little clean-up on short notice & they had a weekend appointment available, so we thought we'd give them a try. While the prices are reasonable, the old addage of "you get what you pay for" definitely applies here. The store itself is downright depressing. It's so dilapidated & dingy. The people act as though they positively detest their jobs & aren't too fond of dogs, either (except for perhaps Kenny -- who unfortunately wasn't the one to take care of my dog). Not good in a pet grooming "salon." This was the only time my dog has ever hesitated to go with groomers. (He's no dummy.) Shortly after returning home with our dog we realized his collar was missing. When we called to alert them of this, they said they didn't know where it was. (Was I surprised? No. Disappointed and further disgusted with their lack of professionalism? Yes.) Love your dog? Want to stay off Prozac? Then steer clear of PetSmart in Concord. read more

This is the only mega pet store near my house & since I have 3 dogs, a cat, plus a fish tank, I seem to come here pretty often. Lately they seem to be rearranging the store every time I visit so it takes me a while to find my dog's food. Plus I can never remember the brand name (something with "Nature" in the name...same as 10 other dog food brands). But I don't mind wandering the aisles cuz there is always something fun I can pick up for my beloved pets. The folks who work there are usually pretty pleasant & they will open more check stands if it is crowded. I love to peek in on the dog training sessions & check out all the cute pups. I also like to visit the kitty adoption area where I always find a cat who seems to be looking only at me & begging to bring him home. So far I've been able to resist...but for how long?? read more

I have a general aversion to chains (short of the usual ones that spike crack in your retail experience, like Target), and this place doesn't help. Here's some things this one has going against it: *It sells live animals. I won't get into the whole deal of why that isn't cool, beyond selling living creature and then getting expert advice from a piece of paper to keeping it alive. Rescue,people! They do have adorable kitties and bunnies on display for the Martinez Animal Shelter, so props to that. *They sell crap food that I wouldn't feed my pets. Science Diet isn't premium, folks! Plus, the company that makes SD, Colgate Palmolive, unapologetically tests on animals. Again, this isn't that kind of review, but if you really love your animals, consider these impacts. The only reason I shop here is that they sell Pa-purr cat litter. *I was here once with my corgi, and as we were walking down the aisle an employee looked at her and scrambled off in what looked like fear. Okay, I sort of get that all people don't like pets, but they shouldn't be working at a pet store, plus corgis are pretty much in the top ten least intimidating looking dogs list, and they look like smiley, foxy, waddling wooley worms. *I also took said dog to the groomers a few months back because my friend loves my dog, and she loves how her dogs smell after leaving this place, I took my dog here so my friend could have her be extra smelly and snuggly for my friend's birthday. It was a stressful experience for my dog and I--and she got a bacterial infection from the whole process, too. I 'll now find my Pa-purr (made out of recycled paper-get it?) elsewhere. read more

The fams first stop after picking up our new Shih Tzu - Casey. Roamed around the store a lil bit and picked up the essentials for a new pup. it took a while to flag someone down to help with a heavy item but then Tina was very helpful in providing not only information on their services, training classes but also recommended a few items to help out newbie owners. Although we felt overwhelmed, we were comforted that we got what we needed and experienced friendly service. Owners who frequent this chain say they have the best prices around. I've been taking my pup to the Petsmart groomers on occasion for almost two years and while I was never impressed with the haircuts, they always did a good job of bathing the wonder dog and clipping his nails but after my most recent experience, I will NEVER return. The day after my pup was groomed, he began scratching his ear uncontrollably. He cried in pain when I tried to investigate the problem. What I found in one ear was a cotton ball that the the groomer had never removed! It was stuck in his ear for over 24 hours!! That didn't even compare to what I found in the other ear. Either the groomer had never put a cotton ball in the ear or she didn't notice when it fell out. Water must have made its way into his ear, which led to a severe ear infection, complete with puss and a foul odor. I immediately took him to the vet for treatment. 2 weeks and $200 later I've resolved to never ever trust Petsmart with my pup. read more

I only come here to buy beneful since pet food express doesn't carry it. The area around here isn't the best. There's a liquor store right next door so of course there's solicitors and young teenage wannabe gang members lurking around. I suggest (for the ladies), come during the day because at night, there's a few groups of people just walking around, kind of scary at night. The customer service is decent, not the best. My favorite PetSmart to bring my dogs to. Even if I have to drive a 20 minute drive from Antioch but it's the only place I trust. They have a Banfield Hospital inside this PetSmart and the ladies working there are the sweetest to my dogs. I never worry when I leave them here for their exams because I know they will be treated well. read more

I went in yesterday to get my new pup cleaned up and rid of ticks and fleas since she had a lot from where I rescued her. Everyone was so friendly but that doesn't take away from the fact that they have a job to do and when I got my baby back she still had ticks all over her ears and gunk still inside her ears. They addressed the situation of the ticks by saying they were "unknown" bugs to them or the vet next door who had checked up on her. They were indeed ticks. I would suggest to everyone that you try a different pet smart, for your wallet and your pets sake. read more

First time trying the grooming salon at this PetSmart in Concord and I will not ever return. Took my dog there for full grooming and they clipped his nail sloppy. The groomer Tatiana is rude and did a half done job and charged me because she did a poor job with cutting my dogs nails. She had a big attitude because I asked her to fix my dog's nails. I get you are trying to go home but if I'm going to spend almost $60 and don't do a job I will ask to have it redone or fix it. Poor service I will not return. read more

I came here for a new hermit crab but the cage was filthy. They had way to many hermit crabs in there and there were bugs in the cage! When my bf asked about it the worker said, "Those are just fruit flies.. they're everywhere in the store." 1. They shouldn't be in the store 2. Just because they're everywhere in the store doesn't mean you don't clean the cage 3. How would you like to be crammed into a tiny space full of flies? Never again. read more

I am giving this place two stars just because I was happy the first time I brought my dog here for grooming, should have been a one star or no star at all. We usually go to the petsmart in Pleasanton where we have a regular groomer but we just moved here so we tried it a few months ago, the groomer that took care of our dog that time was really good and knowledgeable, our dog Sofie at that time had a lot of matted hair so she needed to be shaved, (dogs get depressed when they're totally shaven up, who wouldn't be) .Anyway , she did a very nice job and tried her best to make her cut look "cute", when my my daughter picked Sofie up she even explained how to take care of her hair so it won't matt easily and to bring her to the groomer before it grows too long. So i decided to come back again here yesterday 7/3/14 to have our dog groomed so she would look nice for the holidays, (her hair this time is shorter and no matting because we have been taking care of it). Unfortunately we didn't get the name of the groomer that did her the last time.When my daughter dropped our dog off for her 9am appointment, it was a different groomer this time(which we also didn't get the name of, lucky for her). She showed her different sizes of razors and samples of cuts, my daughter who doesn't know anything about dog haircuts much less razor sizes, told her we just want her to look cute. She IS the groomer, she should have at least suggested something that would look nice. She suggested the number 7, and my daughter who doesn't know any better went with it. When my daughter came to pick up the dog, she was all shaven up, as in all over her body, even her beard and ears except her tail(which must be hard to do and my daughter specifically told the groomer to trim), the inside of her ear is not shaved, her nails we're cut too short. It looks like the whole thing is haphazardly done, I bet she didn't give her a bath either and just sprayed cologne on our dog to cover it up because she has hairs falling off when my daughter picked her up. And most of all she didn't even have the nerve to show up when my daughter picked the dog up. Never again will we come back to this place..I'd rather drive all the way to Pleasanton. That groomer is just plain LAZY and probably hates her job.. read more

After about 8 months of struggling with my dog on the issue, I finally gave up and decided to have a groomer take care of my dog's toenails. I've tried everything to get him to allow me to do it myslef, I'm confident about it, quick yet gentle, and I never yell at him. I've also never made him bleed, so I don't know why he won't let me do this. But he won't. That's where these guys come in. I took Rocky here, deeply ashamed of how long his nails have gotten, and asked them to just do the tips so the quick could recede on it's own in time. They kindly obliged, saying that they would have done that anyway but they appreciated how I cared and knew why they would only clip a little bit. I left my dog with one of the groomers and went to the registers to pay while they worked. Now, a 70 pound husky/shepherd/st bernard/boxer mix is no easy task. When I came back, I was again slightly ashamed as one groomer had turned into three. One was gently holding my dog around the head/chest area in kind of a bear hug type restraint position. One was holding the clippers and taking his time with each nail. The third groomer involved just about made me cry. She was gently holding my dogs head between her hands and was SINGING to him to soothe him! How wonderful! And all three of them were still smiling and kind afterwards, even though they should have been frustrated out of their minds! Please, keep up the great work! The training department also gets 5 stars, Rob is an amazing trainer who will train you right along with your puppy/dog. The store itself, get 4 stars, it's usually clean and stocked, but the employees are hard to find and aren't generally very knowledgable. Also, sometimes they have specific reps for certain brands in the stores, who can sometimes be pretty pushy. After telling a rep that I was not interested he literally threw his hands up and said "ok fine!" hella rude. My dog's food is much better than what he was trying to hawk. Science Diet SUCKS hardcore. Full of nothing but junk, as a side note. read more

We have adopted A LOT of rescue dogs so at $21 per dog at the Vet for toenail clips, it was adding up. We decided to try Petsmart, since it was $9 for toenail clips. We still liked to take black toenailed dogs to the vet. Well, we took our two little chi girls several times and it was fine. But the last last time the girl seemed very inexperienced with dogs. One of my rescues seemed frightened by her. My hubby told her she always pees a little, no matter what. She even does this at the vet. She came from a very bad place. This girl behaved badly toward the end; roughly putting my girl on the floor and saying, "Ugh, just go, just go" and practically shooing her out of the grooming area. My hubby was about to explode at her behavior. After this experience, we discussed just cutting their toenails ourselves - how bad could it be? Others who adopt rescues, rescue and who run rescue laughed at us and told us to get over it, buy a good clipper and just start with the tips. Sure, we may make one or two doggies bleed a bit, maybe only once...even the vets do that but have plenty of the powder on hand and we would learn and be fine. So last week we set to cutting the toenails (scared to death) and it was going fine until we got to the two chis that we had taken to Petsmart Grooming. CLEARLY, the back toenails, what would the baby toes, had NEVER been clipped the last few times. The toenail was curled under in a circle and the nail on one dog was growing into the pad!! All the other toenails were long but not in that state whatsoever. We clipped all their nails just fine and came to that and did a big, fat WTF?!? We, who are not groomers, managed to clip, file and take care of both girls, who both had the very same issue on both exact toenails. We were livid. I take part of the blame because we should have looked every time they clipped the nails. But if they saw that the nails were a problem, why not say something? We could have taken the dogs to our vet immediately. Or did they not even bother to look? Were they in a rush and just missed those toenails out of sloppiness? Now that we do it ourselves we can clip every two weeks and know it's done properly. We even cut the dogs who had black toenails and I didn't even have a heart attack - we just clipped the tips and it was great. Petsmart Groomers were sloppy and it caused my doggies trauma. That was just wrong. The only reason they got 2 stars is I believe the first girl who cut their toenails was professional and knew what she was doing, the times after that I think the people were not good at all. The first girl cut them right in front of us; others took them in the back. Won't ever go back but did buy Petsmart's Martha Stewart Clipper which was OK. read more

The service here is really great. Recently, my dog got ringworm. Two clerks helped me search the medications for OTC ringworm goop. They weren't even sure if it existed, but we managed to find three different types. And they also said that if the medication did not work that I should bring the unused portion back for a full refund. Please please please do not bring your dog here for any grooming. Our sweet dog had a wash and haircut and basically came back bald with major razor burn on her face and neck- some of it is bleeding. He is help me on more than one occasion he has now taken over there I'll where they have leashes and collars which actually I wander around a lot. A couple of weeks ago, I took my husky in to get a haircut, bathed, tooth brushed, etc. Let me just say my husky is tall and big, but, he is still a husky While coordinating with Melissa before checking my dog in, a different groomer walked by and commented " He is a malamute, not a husky" However Melissa's demeanor was proffesional, communicative, attentive and she treated my dog like it was my own child. Lastly my husky ended up looking beautiful and fluffy, exactly what I wanted. Please go see Melissa, she knows what she is doing! read more

The staff were really pleasant and identified the best length of hair for my little guy, since he had some matting. I'm really pleased with the actual cut. I know other reviews refer to nicks and cuts on their pup, but this didn't happen with my guy. The reason I rated 3 stars was for his behavior afterwards. Upon bringing him home, he was skiddish to be petted and hid under my bed, and even growled at me. This is all extremely unlike him. He's never had this type of reaction after a grooming and no one indicated that anything happened while he was at the store. It might be old age kicking in but I'm not sure. read more

I have been going here frequently for my new Cat. I must say, every time I walk into the store I am greeted promptly and it is nice to be acknowledged. Last time I went to purchase a cat structure that said it was on sale. Apparently the sale had been over for quite some time and the tag was left on so when the barcode was scanned the price was more than shown. After interjecting the store promptly figured out its mistake and adjusted the price for me. :) I walked out with my cat structure for about 30% of the original price. read more

I really enjoy bringing my puppy here. Milo is always welcomed by the staff immediately upon arrival. We recently brought him to the new Puppy Play Date on Saturdays for only $10. It makes it so easy for him to interact with other dogs his age. And he loves playing with other puppies! We loved it so much that we signed up for puppy training classes for more interaction during the week. He's a Miniatures Schnauzer and will need to be groomed pretty often. I like that I can set up his grooming appointments easily online. And they quickly return him looking so fluffy and sweet smelling! This review is for dog training only. More specifically, this review is about dog trainer Jose. My Maltese is 1 and had gone through dog training in concord. We were not able to truly get him to do anything properly. That class was over $200. Sirus was the name, I think. We decided to give training another shot so I called petsmart. Training was about $100. We really got lucky this time. At the beginning of the class, my little dog couldn't follow any commands. After just two classes, he could sit and wait. He does it so good I couldn't believe it only took two classes. Jose is very patient and clearly knows how to train dogs. He is polite and is very good at explaining the logic behind the training. The training area in this petsmart is clean like it should be. The other local dog training place was filthy with dog hair everywhere. That place also smelled so bad I had to walk outside to take a break. Highly recommending Jose from petsmart. You will be pleased with the results. read more

Best pet shop around. Excellent prices & selection for small animals, unfortunately not longer have equine tack. From the ground Aquarium needs up to bird supplies, Petsmart seems to have something for it. Folks are friendly, maybe service could be better but when you get a sales person they are very friendly and TRY to be helpful. Would like to larger rat cages. I bought two leopard geckos from them a couple months ago. I started to notice that something was off about them. I even did SO MUCH research and I was taking care of them perfectly. Apparently they both have stick tail and one is being put down right now. People weren't kidding when they said pet stores really don't care about the animals they sell. I usually go to this location to purchase all of my son's Beta fish needs. The location of this Petsmart is kind if iffy so I wouldn't go here at night. If you decide to go here at night, be sure to bring someone with you (if you are a female). There are sometimes homeless people hanging around the liquor store next to Petsmart. Today (Monday, 7/13/15) I took my son's Beta fish in to have someone take a look at him. They couldn't do anything for my Beta other than tell me he is old and has hit his life span (usually 2 years). I was pretty bummed that they couldn't do anything for my Beta, but at least they were able to take a look at him (I guess). read more

Since we moved to Concord about two years ago we've been taking our dogs to Animal Crackers for grooming. They always did a great job but you had to book a long time in advance. I made the mistake of forgetting to schedule the next appointment when I picked up the dogs the last time and when it came time for haircuts again they were booked out three+ weeks. Out of desperation we called PetSmart and they were able to get the dogs in the same afternoon. In the past we used the PetSmart in Pinole and had less than desirable results several times so we stopped taking the dogs there. I'm happy to report that the grooming department in Concord is far better. We've had the dogs trimmed and bathed several times now and they've done a great job for half the price of Animal Crackers. Keep in mind that the crew at a place like PetSmart probably turns over a lot faster than the crew at a place like Animal Crackers, so things could go south quickly. Howerver, as long as the current groomers are there we'll continue to use PetSmart. In regards to the rest of the store, I only buy from there when we're in a pinch for treats. In general their treats are grossly overpriced compared to Target or Dog.com, but are a bargain compared to Petco. read more
